In OUR BUSy LIVeS, it is sometimes hard to determine what we should be spending our time doing. Work, social media, family and friends, traveling, etc.
These are all things we spend a lot of time doing, and often, a lot of money on. we do these things to achieve a level of wellbeing. we want to be happy, healthy and content. what we do in our daily lives can determine how well off we are. Recently, a study in Canada looked at data that tracked more than 6000 people over the course of 14 years. It was found that people who had a sense of purpose and direction in their lives were more likely to live longer than those who claim to “wander aimlessly through life”. Those who had a sense of purpose had a 15% lower risk of death compared to those who were more aimless, regardless of when they found their direction. The study’s initial findings show that having a sense of purpose protects against stress, reducing its harmful effects such as heart disease. So, have you found your sense of purpose? Which do you think matters most—money and stuff, or happiness and well-being?apparently, they do not have to be mutually exclusive. A recent TedTalk by Michael Norton begins with him saying that the statement “money can’t buy happiness” is wrong. This is a bold statement; we are always told that there are other things in life that are supposed to make us happy. However, Norton’s presentation demonstrates that when people, in any country in the world, spend
money on other people they report higher levels of happiness than when they spend their money on themselves. The message here is clear: when you find a sense of purpose that involves spending time and money with a goal of making others happy, you can significantly improve your wellbeing. The Day of Happiness campaign was a global celebration to mark the UN International Day of Happiness: During this campaign 87% surveyed chose happiness and well-being over money and stuff. In July 2011, the United Nations general Assembly adopted a groundbreaking resolution which recognized happiness as a “fundamental human goal” all 193 nation states voted in favor of the resolution. and since 2013 The
International Day of Happiness is observed every year on March 20.what does determine people’s life satisfaction? The UN World Happiness report in 2013 uses measurements such as income, social support, health, generosity, and corruption to measure if nations are happy. The report shows that the world as a whole has become a slightly happier and more generous place over the past five years. Research done at the University of Exeter Medical School in the Uk, reviewed 40 studies from the past 20 years on the link between volunteering and health. published in bMc (bioMed Central) Public Health, the paper finds that volunteering is associated with lower depression, increased wellbeing, and a 22 percent reduction in the risk of dying.Every little bit helps. There is a lot of time in every day, so you don’t have to completely give up your life in service of others. If we are to reach our goal of being happier—and strive to have happier families and a happier community, then we, as individuals can play a major role in shifting the status quo of our communities. once you start, it doesn’t take much effort. It is important to review your values, and pick a cause that is close to your heart, because humanity is in need of support on many fronts. but change cannot come through revolution; on the contrary, it must come through the organic evolution of values, of social generosity, and of a commitment to better.

onboard. This could be due to over-confidence, overlooking safety due to routineness, laziness, lacking safety awareness or knowledge and/or simple ignorance. To prevent people onboard from getting into unnecessary trouble and/or injury, the company appoints Port Safety Officers (PSO) to ensure that everyone onboard our vessels performs their daily tasks safely.
PSOs are well-qualified and experienced mariners who have attained the level of Master Mariner for ocean going vessels. besides possessing strong leadership and management skills, they need to be patient but assertive in handling the day to day safety related issues on board vessel which can be sensitive.
The daily routine of a pSo starts whenever a boat calls in port. He/she will visit the boat and the first thing he/she checks is the alertness of the sentry. Does the sentry ensure that the ‘visitors’ embark the boat correctly and safely? Next, is the gangway properly secured? Is there a safety
net attached? Is there any life vest available? Although these are standard things which the crew does every time the boat comes alongside, there is a danger that something is overlooked. The PSO will look out and ensure that nothing is missed.
Next, he/she ensures that visitors are properly registered in the visitors log so that in case there is a need to evacuate the boat, the Master will know how many people are onboard. This is followed by a safety briefing for all visitors before they are allowed to proceed.
After the briefing, he/she will proceed to meet the Master and officers onboard to explain the purpose of the visit, which is usually to ensure that the boat is in conformance with all international and state regulations.
Accompanied by a deck officer, the PSO will conduct spot checks for any unsafe conditions and hazards starting from the highest part of the boat, called the monkey island, to all decks level, accommodation areas, main deck, engine room, deck stores, provision stores and emergency steering room. This includes inspecting the life-saving appliances and fire- fighting equipment to ensure they are in good working condition. He/she will ensure all safety sign posters, emergency exit

Mr. khayyat described the major in-house engineering core competencies underlying rUSS’ proprietary innovations as embedded systems, radio frequency and network, and information technology engineering with software engineering core competency acquisition being work-in-progress. Those engineering core competencies are the foundation of rUSS’ advances in H2S detection technologies. Several proprietary technologies were presented in the areas of communications protocol (PolarBus™), data acquisition and automation controller platform (ak-28™).
Mr. khayyat described Er&D’s accomplishments as revenue-generating products, not just an academic exercise. In 2014, rUSS released its first in-house engineered commercial product, bayaN™, which is installed in rabiyah compound and successfully commissioned in late 2014. rUSS’ novelty is a large scale, wide area gas detection network. There exist no similar products in the market.
Mr. khayyat closed the presentation with the debut of RUSS’ first branded portable gas detection system. HarIS™, a small-scale—up to 46 sensors—detection system was first debuted during the MEoS 2015 event in Bahrain. After a quick run through some of HarIS™’s advanced functional and diagnostics and maintenance features, Mr. Khayyat’s closing remarks commended the engineering team for this historic achievement. Today, RUSS is the market’s leader in fixed and portable gas detection systems and equipment. “We are proud to be the market leaders and the local company of choice for loss prevention to participate in a technical exchange with renowned experts in Saudi aramco and demonstrate our commitment to public
safety and the safety of communities,” said Mr. khayyat.

Ihab khayyat, the Engineering, research, and Development group Manager, showcased rawabi Holding’s strategy in technology localization in the private sector through a presentation titled “rUSS Indigenous Er&D”.
Mr. khayyat presented the company’s efforts in local engineering core competency acquisition and development and explained that today rUSS has in-house design capabilities in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, computer and Embedded Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Radio Frequency and Wireless Network Engineering, and Software Engineering. “Those engineering disciplines and fields are the core components for high-tech product development and new innovations,” said Mr. khayyat. Most notably was Mr. khayyat’s demonstration of his engineering team from local universities such as kfUpM, prince Mohamed University (pMU), University of Dammam, and arab open University. The audience found particular interest in the Software Engineering team composed solely of female engineers from local universities such as pMU, University of Dammam and arab open University. Mr. khayyat explained that female engineers were responsible for development of end-user features that were part of the revenue-generating features on rUSS’ latest products.
The Technology Showcase was a venue to demonstrate a wide variety of kfUpM’s emerging technologies that resulted from leading edge research in areas such as pipeline leak detection, membranes, building materials, power transmission, wireless sensors, etc. The patented technologies being presented can have industrial applications with commercial potential. The showcase is a unique opportunity for local businesses and industry to identify promising technologies ready to be commercialized.

rUSS has successfully completed the commissioning and testing of its first in-house engineered wireless gas detection system installed in rabiyah residential compound, Saudi aramco. The new system, released under the commercial name bayan, offers a reliable and one-of-a-kind detection solution to rabiyah’s villas for accidental release of methane.
bayan is a large scale, wide area wireless telemetry network used for hazardous/toxic gas detection and safety monitoring. It is designed to meet engineering challenges such as underground gas leak detection. Bayan
features a noncomplex desktop monitor. Using our proprietary supervisory control and data acquisition software technology, the desktop monitor serves as a platform where information for all sensors is provided to the end-user in an intuitive graphical user interface. It enables the end-user to switch between table or map views as well as provide the ability to set different sensor threshold limits or send SMS/email notifications. Bayan features advanced control redundancy designed to be collocated or in separate locations. a secondary system controller on stand-by will take over control of the network automatically when the primary controller defaults in a manner of seconds, increasing the reliability of the system by an order of magnitude. The system was rawabi United Safety Services’ first, turnkey Engineering, procurement, commissioning, and Testing project which utilized its recently acquired indigenous engineering core competencies.
with its commitment to the safety of work and residential communities, rawabi United Safety Services aims to provide clients with home-grown, unmatched innovations that are reliable, scalable, and supported by a dedicated client-care team.

rawabi Holding group president & CEO, Mr. Osman Ibrahim also thanked the team in an email that was sent to all members. The team received appreciation certificates for this great accomplishment on Sunday, 5th of April 2015 during the Weekly Toolbox Meeting at the laydown area.
congratulations to rSc!
to get materials to create custom areas for storing containers. To execute such projects, rSc used various marine and land equipment and machineries. The marine equipment includes cutter suction dredgers, multi crafts, speed boats, etc.
The cutter suction dredger is a stationary dredger equipped with a cutter head which excavates the soil before it is sucked up by the flow of the dredge pump(s). During operation, the dredger moves around a spud pole by pulling and slacking on the two fore sideline wires. This type of dredger is capable to dredge all kinds of material and is accurate due to their movement around the spud. The soil is hydraulically transported via pipeline, but some dredgers do have barge-loading facilities as well. cutter power ranges from 50 kW up to 5000 kW, depending on the type of soil to be cut.
rSc bought two cutter suction dredgers, osman I and osman II, named by the group chairman after the group president & cEo, Mr. osman Ibrahim, from royal IHc Merwede, the world’s leading builder of dredging equipment.

In ReCent yeARS, public and private sector organizations across the gcc region have achieved important
milestones in enabling women to reach leadership positions, with many companies appointing or promoting highly talented women to senior leadership positions for the first time. These outstanding “first women” have demonstrated profound capabilities and commitment, and have contributed to transforming social attitudes towards women in leadership while serving as role models for us (the younger generation).
companies believe that more involvement of women in leadership positions is a “very important” driver of organizational effectiveness. gender diversity identified three core mechanisms in behaviors, perspectives, and interactions:
(A) The mix of leadership strengths men and women demonstration; It was found that companies with three or more women in senior management functions score at least as much as men—if not slightly more in nine dimensions of organizational effectiveness. The nine outcome dimensions: direction, leadership, culture
benefit from a greater diversity of ideas, as men and women bring different perspectives and will often focus on different dimensions of the same problem.
(C) The improvements in leadership team dynamics observed as teams grow more diverse; it was found that mixed-gender settings create a “higher degree of formality” in meetings, leading to more task-focused and efficient discussions.
Despite the great signs of growth and development, women still face big challenges too. The biggest one is the double burden women face in balancing work and domestic responsibilities. See more barriers through figure 2.
we need to overcome these barriers and consider the large and under-tapped source of knowledge, skills, and experience in the GCC: high female education rates, even slightly higher than the rates for men, contrast with low female labor force participation and low employment rates. Remarkable women have made it to the top of organizations or into senior executive teams—where their leadership is rather the exception than the norm—and are carefully watched by their colleagues and the public.
Nonetheless, we need to set consists of action in three arenas —direction-setting leadership, employee capability building, and the organizational framework that supports us:• Top management commitment
to gender diversity; Make it a strategic priority and Measure and track it like any other business initiative
• Targeted leadership development programs that address employee mindsets and behaviors; Support high-potential women in finding their “personal and centered path” towards leadership, provide training in recognizing and overcoming biases, and support retention of the lessons with feedback and networks
• collective enablers; Hr policies and/or infrastructure
from Flexible working arrangements, ensuring company-provided or company-facilitated transportation and child care.putting in place these enablers needs
to go hand-in-hand with current leaders and managements who will assist on changing biases and fostering leadership development. This is the only way that leaders can ensure that women can take true advantage of these flexibility offerings – more than the generation of pioneers has been able to do.
This should accelerate progress towards greater organizational effectiveness and
provide mentors to help more junior women step up and excel in leadership. real progress will come beyond the next wave of firsts—the first “second woman” and the first “third woman”—with many more women who take on the challenges of leadership at the top. As they join the ranks of GCC’s “first women” pioneers, they will make a strong contribution to realizing the vision of making women in leadership the norm.
