Issue 4 / May 2018

I am Motoyuki Sakai who has taken office as President of SCA in April 2018. My career at Sumitomo Chemical began in 1985, and this is my second overseas assignment in the last 28 years.

Among the highly globalised operations of Sumitomo Chemical, SCA is now one of the most fundamental companies, generating the third-largest revenue in the group. It is certainly my great honor and pleasure to work with all of you, at such an important business site.

It has been just one year since the amalgamation. While your valuable efforts have already begun to create positive effects, there are still a lot of challenges inside the new SCA. I strongly believe, however, that we will soon overcome these difficulties and further develop a robust and efficient organisation, achieving synergy with the integration.

Looking at our business environment, the Asian economy will keep rapidly changing - such as transitions in consumer behavior and trade regulations. To enhance our competitive advantages, we need to always keep our eyes open to market situations, act proactively, and capture new business opportunities.

We will leverage on the foresight and skills of employees to identify growth potential in our businesses and continue to create sustainable corporate value by generating economic, societal, and environmental value.

I am determined to use my best efforts to steer SCA in the right direction, even in a drastically changing environment. Your kind support and cooperation will be very much appreciated.

Best regards,

Motoyuki SakaiPresidentSumitomo Chemical Asia Pte. Ltd

Sumitomo Chemical Asia held its Annual Dinner and Dance at the prestigious Mandarin Orchard Hotel on the 2nd of February 2018. It marked the first time company staff had the pleasure of dining together since the Company’s official Amalgamation on 1st April 2017. It was attended by more than 400 employees and their partners, dressed to the theme of ‘Ready, Set, Glow!’.

Amongst the highlights of the evening was a live sand art show showcasing the growth of the company over the years, as well as a lip-sync battle and a dance sequence enjoyed by all. Guests were also treated to a sumptuous 8-course halal-Chinese feast. To add to the merriment, each table had its own theme with members of the table dressed accordingly in attire made from scratch, from a Hawaiian theme to Bumble-bee outfits, in the hopes of winning the best dressed table prize.

After introducing the new “SPUR” committee and thanking the old “SPUR” committee on stage for organising the entire event, the committee led the mass dance together with the emcee. The ballroom was transformed into a booming nightclub, and everyone took to the dancefloor, making it a most memorable night. The night drew to a close as Mr. Takazawa, was invited on stage to give away the top 5 prizes for best themed table. All in all, it was a wonderfully neon-filled night packed with excellent food and endless laughter.

This year, SCA hosted a plant tour for the NUS Chemical Engineering Student Council (CHESS) on 28 February 2018 on Jurong Island, Sakra Road (SMAG Complex). The organisation believes in the importance of reaching out to graduate students as a prospective employer, as well as to increase awareness of our business products. About 30 students were invited to the company premises to introduce them to working life on Jurong Island. Members from T&C, HR Operations and HSE departments work together to actualize this event.

As announced during the Employee Communication Sessions back in November - December 2017, HR will be launching a new HR system (Unit 4 Prosoft) this year. Unit 4 Prosoft contains a number of HR modules housed under one common Employee Self Service portal for easy accessibility and convenience.

pressure and flow indicators, reactors, boilers etc. It was an eye opening experience for the students who were enthusiastic to find out more.

At the end of Plant Tour, there was a wrap up session for students to raise questions. As a memento gift, each of them was given a RFID card case. We hope they walked away not only with the insights of working in Jurong Island, but also a better understanding of our business and products.

A corporate video was shown to the crowd of students to provide insights of the various business sectors, the history of Sumitomo Chemical and the production processes of MMA and PMMA products. The students were excited and ask questions relating to work-life in SCA and potential training opportunities / career development within the Petrochemical Industry.

SCA places safety as a top priority and before the students embarked on the “Plant Tour” (the most exciting part for most of them), HSE Personnel briefed them on the “Dos and Don’ts”, essential safety rules and restricted photography within the complex. Next, the students accompanied by a team of SCA personnel were given a briefing on the different systems in the plant, such as control valves, temperature,

Besides the current e-Leave and e-Pay modules where employees are rather familiar with, we have enhanced the e-Leave module such that for sick leave application, employees can attach the medical certificates (MC) issued together with the leave application as part of the supporting document. The original copy of the MC submission to HR is no longer required.

With the move towards paperless work environment, we will be introducing e-Training and e-Appraisal modules in the next wave. Employees can look forward to online registration for training programs, and to view their past training records as and when they need some reference for future developmental plans. E-Appraisal will also bring about greater convenience as we can

do away with the paper submissions, and be able to retrieve past records from the system easily.

HR will continue to explore work automation in other areas of work to achieve more efficiency and productivity so if you have any suggestions to offer, please get in touch with us!

Since 17 May, SMAG has collected and sold recyclables to our recycling contractor. Our purpose is for everyone working in SMAG to practice the 3Rs, placing emphasis on recycling. To make this initiative more meaningful, SMAG will donate the collections to an appointed charity annually.

On 19 Jan 2018, a group of 14 volunteers from SMAG’s Green Committee and contractors visited the Lions Home for the Elders (Bishan) – bringing with them donations from our supportive employees and contractors.

As many of our volunteers were visiting a home for the elderly for the first time, they were understandably nervous, but excited. However, it was only a matter of time before everyone was chatting happily.

A few of our talented members even led everyone in a sing-along session, accompanied by a guitar.

When the visit came to an end, many residents expressed their gratitude and were looking forward to seeing us again. All of us were happy to have represented SMAG companies and contractors in delivering our donations and spending time with the residents. The visit brightened the day for the elderly, and was a memorable experience for us.

We are proud that SMAG places an emphasis on recycling and giving back to society!

As part of ECO’s activities, SMAG worked with NEA to organise a 2-hour tour to the Semakau Landfill - Singapore’s only landfill for waste disposal. In 2035, Semakau will be full and Singapore will need another landfill - yet Singapore’s recycling rate remains low.

This visit coincides with our work plan for 2018, where we aim to increase SMAG’s recycling rate. (From April to December 2017, SMAG recycled a total of 10,740kg of carton boxes and 770kg of office paper.)

When we arrived on the beautiful island, our guide shared the history and operations of the landfill, and how rubbish was brought in from the mainland daily.

We learnt how waste is collected and sent to waste-to-energy plants for incineration, how incineration ash is tipped into the giant landfill cell and evenly distributed, and how

NEA has a wastewater treatment plant toensure that excess water is discharged into the open sea. Our guides also explained that after depositing the ashes. NEA topped up the topsoil and plants grew. Today, almost half of the island has been filled.

By the end of our tour to the Semakau Landfill, we understood the need to reduce our carbon footprint in our office operations and adopt the principles of the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

“It was a meaningful journey, it makes me committed to practice 3Rs daily. I am impressed with the Singapore’s government’s efforts and commitment.” Carrie Soh (F&A)

“A great experience! We need to cultivate ECO habits and, reduce waste to be sustainable for our future.” Adeline Go (HSE)

A quick reflect on the meaning of our committee’s name.

SPUR stands for SCA People Unifying Representatives. As such, the purpose of the SCA Sports & Recreation Committee is to bring about oneness, as a whole, to all SCA members by leading and bringing them together through company-organised activities. Most importantly, SPUR means motivation and encouragement, which brings out the intended purpose of motivating SCA members to participate and in turn encourage our people to unite as one. As usual, the key activities that are planned for the year include the monthly Fruits/Vitagen Day. This initiative is held throughout the year across all offices to encourage employees to maintain a healthy diet. To enhance our employee experience, SPUR launched its first Fruits/Vitagen Card at the Site Office. With the new cards, our SMAG employees will not miss

out on any redemption, as they are now able to redeem at any time at their convenience.

Another highly popular activity is the Back, Shoulder & Neck Massage sessions that will be organised in March and August this year. As part of giving back to our community, we have engaged the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) Mobile Massage Team for our massage session. We believe even a small good deed can ignite change and positively impact the community by providing a renewed sense of hope.

Further, positive feedback was received for our Family, Health, and Financial Talks held last year. By gaining knowledge from these talks, we are better equipped with knowledge of topics close to our hearts.

One of the committee’s targets is to support and promote health activities such as fitness programmes. An exercise class, which will

kick off in April until the end of June, has already received more than 25 participants. By launching this program, we aim to encourage employees to stay healthy and active through exercising.

Other fitness related events include the yearly bowling tournament and running events, which not only bring our people together through team-based activities, but also provide an opportunity to discover the talented employees in sports.

As the year comes to a close, a Year End Appreciation Lunch will be organised to gather our people together to celebrate our successes as well as to show appreciation of our company’s gratitude to every employee’s effort and support throughout the year.

We hope these activities will help our employees to have a good bonding time together and to promote a good work-life balance.

Here is a recap of all SPUR activities for the year 2018.

4th Regional IT Meeting

All Aboard! SC Group New Hire Orientation

By Yoichi Nakamura

By Elsie Ng

The SCA IT Service Operations Section held its 4th Regional IT Meeting at Duo office on 22nd January 2018. The objectives of the meeting were to build relationships among IT staff in the AP Region and Sumitomo Chemical Japan (SCC), as well as to share the progress of the IT activities of the SCC/AP region, and each company’s IT issues/requirements.

This time, a web conference was utilised where a total of 31 participants from affiliated

companies in the AP region and SCC were present, with 7 participants joining via Skype.

During the group discussion, all participants shared each company’s IT issues/requirements and discussed how we could solve them by utilising SCC/SCA IT services.

After the meeting concluded, participants enjoyed dinner at Blu Jaz, which proved to be the perfect setting to get better acquainted. All in all, the meeting was a very good opportunity for affiliated companies, SCC and SCA to foster closer ties. As such, plans are underway to hold a similar event next year.

As part of RHR’s continued efforts in engaging and creating a sense of belonging to the Sumitomo Chemical group among the group companies in SEA region, the Group New Hire Orientation (GNHO) program took place on 9th February 2018. 27 participants from four SC group companies (SCA, TPC, SCEA and SC Thailand) came together for the half-day session.

With the objective to provide both cultural and social assimilation for new hires, the session was packed with knowledge sharing topics on Sumitomo Chemical roots, operations and group discussions on Corporate values. The GNHO program outline is as follows:

We are encouraged by the fact that many enjoyed the interactive group discussion sessions and are pleased to hear their constructivve pointers on how to make the session a better on boarding experience for future cohorts. Collectively, with input from other stakeholders, content and delivery of the program are being reviewed periodically with the objective of helping new hires to better adapt to their new working environment.

By Shintaro Yamada The Result of Compliance Awareness Survey 2018Sumitomo Chemical Asia Pte Ltd (SCA) conducted a Compliance Awareness Survey (Survey) as a part of its “Compliance Drive” in 2018 to understand the employees’ awareness and understanding of SCA’s policies relating to the various compliance issues. We would like to introduce a brief summary of the Survey results as follows:

According to the results above, almost all employees understood SCA’s fundamental compliance systems (Code of Ethics, Compliance Committee and Speak-Up system). In relation to the results for Speak-Up System, we would like to re-highlight that (i) employees may use the external hotline (which is manned by an external lawyer in Allen & Gledhill, Mr Daren Shiau, Email: [email protected], Tel:+65-65807612) in addition to our internal Speak-Up hotline and (ii) make the report anonymously.

As for the individual awareness for compliance, the percentage as to who will tolerate compliance violation has declined compared with last year’s results based on the answer to Q19. However, although the questions Q19 and Q24 are similar to each other, the percentage is higher at around 20% for Q24.

321 employees out of 467 employees (68%) took part in the Survey. We would like to thank our colleagues who had participated in the Survey.

According to the answer to Q16, almost all employees think their supervisors consider that any compliance violation is absolutely unacceptable. However, around 15% of employees think that their department will tolerate compliance violations when it comes to achieving business objectives or relationship with business partners based on the answer to Q10.

Though we have received many positive answers for the Survey, the Survey results still shows that our compliance system and our mindset still have much room for improvement. As such, we urge everyone to think about this gap and continue to focus on upholding our company’s compliance system. We believe that it is still necessary to continue to work on the efforts to improve on the awareness and understanding of SCA’s Compliance system. Sumitomo Chemical places “Compliance” at the bedrock of corporate management. According to Mr. Takazawa’s message by email to all employees in the beginning of Compliance Drive Month, the trust that Sumitomo Chemical has built up for over a 100 years, can be completely destroyed and lost in 1 day by a single non-compliant act. Compliance is not just a commitment by a company, it is also a personal commitment of each individual employee. Further, compliance is not just avoiding non-compliance, it is also preventing non-compliance which means that it is a duty to speak up.

2018 New Year Dinner By Daisy Gu

Mr. Takazawa’s contributions to SCA are significant. He helped oversee the amalgamation of the three Sumitomo Chemical entities and seamless transition into a new SCA on 1 April 2017. He was also pivotal in the town office’s relocation to the DUO Tower – a move that served to integrate everyone onto a single level to foster a ‘One

On the evening of February 7, 2018, a New Year‘s dinner was held in Shanghai Shunfeng Restaurant to usher in the Year of the Dog according to the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Mr. Takazawa and SPACT staff gathered to celebrate the event.

Before the meal, Mr. Takazawa addressed all attendees with a welcome speech, where he emphasised the need for employees to understand the importance of compliance - and reaffirming our commitment to compliance. He ended his speech by saying that he looked forward to working with everyone - not only to achieve our business goals, but also to protect and preserve the reputation and history of the company. During the meal, management drew prizes for the staff lucky draw segment. No doubt, all SPACT staff enjoyed this New Year‘s Eve dinner and lucky draw.

SCA’ element and generate new synergies and camaraderie amongst teams, so as to take SCA up to another level of success and excellence.

To show our gratitude, Mr. Takazawa was gifted with a golf club, a golf bag and ‘Thank You’ cards that were collectively signed by each individual.

Well-wishes could also be heard as Mr. Takazawa went about chatting and taking selfies with employees. Everyone wanted to capture a piece of Mr. Takazawa. Clearly, it was an occasion of celebration, as we commemorated Mr. Takazawa’s leadership, legacy, and the knowledge that the memories we have together will last a long time.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or simply the Lunar New Year, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar.

In a flash, two short but meaningful years have passed since Mr. Takazawa came to take the helm as SCA’s Managing Director. To express our appreciation to him, we gathered together at a farewell luncheon on 27 March 2018.

Thank you! - From All of Us

“Don’t be sad because you’re saying goodbye, you shouldbe happy because you have memories with them that you’ll cherish forever.”

Thank you Mr. Takazawa and we wish you all the best moving forward!
