Hänel storage solutions boost performance and optimize intralogistics – innovative examples from the Netherlands

Best regards

Dr. Christina Hänel

Dear Customers,Dear Readers,

Our subsidiary Hänel Kantoor- en Magazijnsystemen in the Netherlands has been providing Hänel lift systems and software solutions to customers in all kinds of industries since the 1980s.

In this issue of Hänel News, I would like to draw your attention to some of our very successful projects in the Netherlands. The interaction of Hänel storage systems with the IT environments at customer sites always plays a key role in delivering great performance and customer benefits – as shown in these solutions.

You will see how the integrated warehouse management in Hänel controllers can be used effectively, even supporting commu-nication between the storage solutions and the ERP systems of our customers. Two other examples demonstrate the complete warehouse management functions included in our HänelSoft®-N warehouse management software.

Another innovative highlight in this issue of Hänel News is the opera-tion of Hänel storage systems via Pick-by-Voice at Favorite Logistics in Tiel. Also worth mentioning is the direct connection of Hänel storage systems to the Magento online shop software used by our customer Sander Vunderink. This solution is groundbreaking in terms of efficient order picking for the e-commerce sector.

I am also quite pleased to announce that Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems was among the finalists for the IFOY Award, the ‘Oscar of Intralogistics’ – this year Hänel received the ‘Best in Intra-logistics’ certificate. What’s more, for the third time in succession, the F.A.Z. Institute ranked Hänel among the innovation leaders in Germany within the scope of the ‘Innovationsführer Deutschlands’ initiative.

And last but not least, I want to mention the availability of our new Wall Calendar 2022. You can order it by simply scanning the QR code or using the link on our website.

I hope you all enjoy reading of our Hänel News, Issue 33.

An employee picks items in parallel from two containers at the access points on the first floor

Hänel is a trustworthy and friendly company that stands for efficient partnerships and always strives to find the optimal logistics solution for customers. This, along with positive feedback from references about system reliability and quality, was a key factor in our decision in favor of Hänel.Fred van SchaikLogistics Manager

Favorite Gifts is a successful family busi-ness and one of the largest providers of promotional items in Europe. The compa-ny’s subsidiary Favorite Logistics takes care of all matters related to the logistics behind the successful online shop.

Space-saving storage in twoHänel high-speed vertical lifts having a height of 11 meters At the logistics center in Tiel, Favorite Logistics operates two Hänel Lean-Lift® systems in conjunction with Actemium Pick-by-Voice for the voice-controlled picking of a wide variety of promotional items. With a height of 11 meters, both storage systems together can accommo-date 90 containers to provide an enormous storage volume of 16 tons. The storage

area available on the first floor was in-creased massively by installing the lift cluster – with a minimum footprint – on the ground floor. Both retrieval access points are located in the shipping department on the upper floor to ensure optimized processes.

Effective order pickingwith the voice-controlledHänel Lean-Lift®The Hänel intralogistics solution is seam-lessly integrated in Favorite Logistics pro-cesses. The Hänel MP 12 N-HostWeb con-troller is directly linked with the Actemium Pick-by-Voice solution via SOAP interface. The Hänel Lean-Lift® is operated exclusive-ly with voice control throughout the entire picking process.

The item location is clearly marked by the freely traversing Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® unit so that picking errors are effectively minimized

Even as items are being boxed for shipment, a voice command can request the next order item from the Hänel Lean-Lift®

The extractor in Hänel Lean-Lift® high-speed systems travels at velocities of up to 2.30 m/s

Employees are thus able to work quickly, safely and precisely without any need for manual data input. All customer orders are converted into picking orders by the FavorIT ERP system and then sent to the Actemium WMS. The job is then started in Actemium per voice command. The lift cluster systems run in parallel and bring items to both access points for retrieval.

Clear item location and identification for boosting reliable picking ratesInstructions communicated per headset guide the employee to the correct access point. Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® uses a light dot to mark the exact location of the requisite item on the container. When an item has been retrieved, the employee con-firms the pick with voice input. The next item is already at the second access point and can be picked immediately. In the meantime, another item on the job order is transported to the access point of the first lift system. When all of the picks have been completed, the job is booked in the FavorIT ERP system.

Intelligent and efficient processes with maximum time savingsTo boost efficiency even more, several orders in one job can be picked at the same time. The intelligent warehouse man-agement of the Hänel controller organizes all order positions in a way that optimizes routing to save time. Parallel picking at two lift systems supported by Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® effectively minimizes pick errors, routing distances and waitingtimes.

Voice-controlled Hänel storage solutions enable one employee to process hundreds of jobs per shift – even at peak times.

Favorite Logistics is completely satisfied with the enormous time savings and warehouse efficiency gained from the fast and accurate picking possible with voice-controlled Hänel intralogistics solutions.

Logistics and fulfillment as success factors:Four Hänel Rotomat® systems with direct link to the webshop

The Hänel Rotomat® with direct link to Magento shop software – the ideal e-commerce logistics solution

Sander Vunderink Elektromaterialien suc-cessfully operates an online shop in the Netherlands which offers a wide assortment of electrical items for fuse boxes, cables, switch systems, and much more. At the heart of the distribution center in Hengelo are four Hänel Rotomat® systems that func-tion as an automated miniload solution which stores more than 2,000 different small items. The lift systems have a height of six meters and each is equipped with the Hänel MP 12 N controller. The systems are configured in a cluster, with operations coordinated by the central Hänel MP 100 D controller.

The shortest delivery times thanks to direct connectivity with the Magento e-commerce systemThe Sander Vunderink webshop guarantees that all orders placed before 5:00 p.m. will

be filled and delivered the next day. In order to keep this promise, the Hänel Rotomat® storage systems are directly linked to the webshop. Some 30 customer orders are combined to form a pick job – the central controller gives this information to the storage systems. At the same time, a delivery slip is printed for a collection box which will hold each of these 30 orders. The box is placed on the roller conveyor system located in front of the storage systems.

Fast and accurate picking thanks to Pick-by-Light with the Hänel compartment and sub-level indicatorsWhen the pick job is started, all four lift systems transport items for the first order position on the pick list to the retrieval access points – the routing is fully opti-mized. identified by the Hänel compartment and sub-level indicators – these LEDs are inte-grated in the work counter of the storage system. The display on the Hänel MP 12 N controller shows the user precisely how many items to pick and which collection box to use.

When the pick is complete, the user con-firms this on the controller and then places the items in the collection box. The Hänel Rotomat® then automatically brings the carrier for the next order position to the retrieval access point. Several employees at the four lift systems conduct this picking process at the same time until all of the customer orders have been filled. The col-lection boxes then move on to the shipping department.

The direct integration of the Hänel auto-mated miniload solution in the e-commerce environment minimizes the time between receipt of orders and the shipping of goods to customers. Job orders as well as all pro-cesses of relevance to the inventory in eachHänel Rotomat® are centrally managed in Magento without the need for subsystems.

The perfect webshop integration and high picking performance make the Hänel Rotomat® the optimal automated provisioning system for e-commerce applications.

At its site in Schiedam, the Netherlands, Boers & Co Precision Solutions manufactures precision parts for complex mechanical applications such as ultra-modern medical exoskeletons. The company consolidates the unique expertise of several different depart-ments under one roof. For years now Boers & Co has been operating flexible vertical lifts from Hänel in a number of business units.

When planning a new building extension, managers included an additional Hänel intra-logistics solution right from the start. Two high-speed versions of the Hänel Lean-Lift® are located in the modern shipping depart-ment where they store finished products and components that are ready for delivery. Both lift systems have a second retrieval access point and thus serve as a “bridge” between the assembly area on the upper

floor with the shipping department on the ground floor. The Hänel systems have a height of eight meters to provide transparent and space-saving storage for finished prod-ucts awaiting shipment. Components and small parts for the assembly department are also neatly stored in the lifts and made avail-able to employees through the ERP system.

Seamless integration of the customer’s ERP system and HänelSoft®-NThanks to the latest control technology, Hänel Lean-Lift® solutions can be seamlessly integrated in existing IT infrastructures. Linking the Lean-Lift® systems to the Epicor ERP system used throughout Boers & Co was an absolute must. This ensures direct commu-nication between HänelSoft®-N and Epicor.

Orders are set up directly on the Epicor terminal. All operations and inventory items stored in the Hänel lifts can be monitored throughout the company at all times

The 12-inch touchscreen of the Hänel MP 14 N controller clearly displays all of the job orders in HänelSoft®-N

The Hänel MP 14 N controller, in conjunc-tion with the intuitive user interface of HänelSoft®-N, offers high levels of conveni-ence and ease of use. Job orders are set up in Epicor and then sent to the lift sys-tems. The user can start the job order directly on the touchscreen of the MP 14 N controller. The Hänel Lean-Lift® transports the requisite items to the ergonomically designed access point for retrieval. The routing in this process is optimized to save time.

Fast and error-free order picking with Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario®To support employees and minimize picking errors, Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® highlights the pick item location on the container when it arrives at the access point. The Hänel multifunction container is also shown on the controller display at the same time. The user confirms the completed pick directly on the controller. The Hänel Lean-Lift® then transports the next item to the access point for retrieval. Inventory data is automatically updated in Epicor. When all of the requested items are on the picking cart, the user closes the job order at the lift – the job is also closed in Epicor simultaneously.

For many years now Boers & Co has been operating two other Hänel Lean-Lift® systems for tool management in the Precision Machining Department.

Hänel multifunction containers allow for the neat and space-saving organization of large quantities of diverse tools

Inspected tools can be made available again for production processes thanks to a second access point

Flexible and transparent tool organization in the Hänel Lean-Lift® on the production floorA Hänel Lean-Lift® in StandAlone mode serves as the central tool provisioning system for the surrounding production area. Complete warehouse management is already integrated in the Hänel MP 14 N-StandAlone controller as a standard feature. Machine operators use the lift controller to request the tools they need. The proper container is then transported directly to the retrieval access point. Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® clearly identifies the location of the requested tool.

The tool maintenance department is located behind the lift system, which has an addi-

tional access point at the back. After use tools are inspected and then returned to the Lean-Lift® at this access point. The Hänel high-speed door enables parallel use of both access points.

Another Hänel Lean-Lift® located in the second production area functions as a tool depot. Once again full usage of the height available – from floor to ceiling – saves valuable space on the production floor. At the same time expensive tools are safely and reliably stored in the lift and can be retrieved ergonomically.

This solution even gives shift employees access to the complete inventory of tools.

Boers & Co Precision Solutions is known for optimized and well-designed business pro-cesses. Hänel intralogistic solutions are a perfect fit for the company’s philosophy.

The Hänel storage solution is compelling in terms of outstanding space savings, reli-ability and ease of use – and thanks to seamless system integration, all of the pre-requisites for Industry 4.0 at the KMWE production site are fulfilled.

Direct communication between HänelSoft®-N and the TDM softwareManagement of the tools stored in the lift systems is based on the intuitive warehouse management solution HänelSoft®-N. All inventory quantities and warehouse opera-tions (put and pick) are recorded and compared with the data residing in the central tool management software.

All tools and holders required for a production process are included in a job order created by the TDM software. These orders are sent to Hänel-Soft®-N – the data is shown on the MP 14 N controller used by employees.

User identity is verified on the controller via RFID chip, and the employee starts the job order with a barcode scanner.

All of the lifts then bring containers with the requisite order items to the access point.

Hänel Pick-o-Light-Vario® highlights the pick item location on the container when it arrives at the access point for fast and error-free retrieval. The pick quantities and item loca-tions are shown on the controller display.

When the pick is completed and confirmed, the employee moves on to the preposi-tioned container waiting at the second lift system. The first lift simultaneously brings the next requisite tool to the access point.

This process continues back and forth until the entire job order is completed.

The highly efficient warehouse processes, in conjunction with maximum ease of use and a seamless IT linkup, make the Hänel Lean-Lift® solution at KMWE the perfect high-tech tool depot.

Lavans BV, Vossenbeemd 104a, 5705 CL Helmond, Netherlands

The entire inventory in the Multi-Space® is transparently managed using the touchscreen of the Hänel MP 14 N-StandAlone controller

Lavans is a family business in the Nether-lands specializing in the rental and care of work clothes and floor mops, as well as various types of door mats and runners.

At its laundry facility in Helmond, Lavans operates two Hänel Multi-Space® systems for storing cleaned door mats and runners. Both lift units are six meters wide and seven meters high, offering enormous on-site storage capacity in the laundry.

The cleaned mats are placed on carts for transport to the access points of the 3-axis lift systems, where the mats are stored prior to delivery to customers. The central location of the storage system ensures short routing within the laundry and thus saves time in the handling process. The Hänel MP 14 N-StandAlone controller, an

integrated standard feature, is used for warehouse management.

Transparent article manage-ment with automatic storage position allocation directly from the MP 14 N controllerAll mats have item numbers imprinted on them, and this data is recorded in the sys-tem. When mats are put into storage, employees enter the item numbers on the touchscreen of the controller. The integrat-ed warehouse management automatically allocates vacant storage positions for the mats and ensures that the appropriate con-tainer is brought to the access point. When the mats have been loaded into the lift, the put operation is booked in the system.

All rental mats have a unique item number and can thus be allocated to the respective customer batch in the storage system

A specific mat can be requested by entering the item number on the controller

Items are put into the Hänel Multi-Space® with maximum speed because the extractor moves horizontally and vertically at the same time. The system efficiently stores hundreds of mats within a minimum foot-print and protects them from dust and dirt.

Thanks to parallel picking at two access points, even huge orders can be processed quickly.

Simple integration of the Hänel Multi-Space® in the ERP system via FTPHänel controllers can be integrated in near-ly all ERP environments without hassles. To keep operations running smoothly in the future, Lavans plans to have the storage systems linked up to its own ERP system. This will enable pick orders to be sent directly from the ERP system to both Hänel storage systems via FTP server.

This kind of integration can be achieved quickly and without replacing any hardware thanks to the flexible interface capabilities of the Hänel MP 14 N controller.

Enormous time savings and high storage density, along with outstanding ergonomics and user friendliness, are among the many compelling benefits delivered by the Hänel storage solution at Lavans.

This year Hänel was a finalist at the International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year event (IFOY AWARD). At the conclusion of the IFOY TEST DAYS 2021 held at the Dortmund Exhibition Center, the intralogistics appraisal orga-nization presented the annual ‘Best in Intralogistics’ award certificates for the current year. At the event in Dortmund, Germany, 17 enterprises, including Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems, were distinguished with these coveted awards.

Hänel specialists integrated 12 Hänel Rotomat® storage systems spanning two floors to realize a modern warehouse solution for MSC Technologies, a provider of embedded systems. The storage carousels support the physical flow of goods at the customer’s site, and they are seamlessly integrated in the SAP environment at MSC Technologies. There is a unique feature in this solution: The storage system control unit also functions as the SAP terminal. Hänel Office

and Industrial Storage Systems is very proud and honored to receive a ‘Best in Intralogistics’ certificate for this solution.

The ‘Best in Intralogistics’ certificate was introduced three years ago to publicly doc-ument the high level of innovation in those devices and solutions nominated for an IFOY AWARD and which successfully passed the IFOY test. The certificate is awarded only to those solutions that meet the criteria of the three-phase IFOY Audit, an independent intralogistics test recognized throughout the industry.

The first phase of the IFOY Audit comprises the scientific IFOY Innovation Check, which is conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dort-mund, the Chair of Business Management esp. Logistics at the Dresden University of Technology, and the Chair of Materials Handling, Material Flow, Logistics at the Technical University of Munich.

Hänel Offi ce and Industrial Storage Systemsamong the fi nalists at IFOY AWARD 2021Hänel received the ‘Best in Intralogistics’ certificate for its ultra-modern warehouse solution at MSC Technologies

These experts also verify the innovations presented by the manufacturers in the test hall and employ a comparison of the tech-nology to determine whether the submis-sions are innovative further developments, new compositions, or genuine innovations.

The second phase of the IFOY Audit is based on the practice-centric IFOY Test developed by Theo Egberts, technology journalist from the Netherlands. The solu-tions are subjected to coordinated trans-port or function tests, including the 80 criteria of the IFOY Test Protocol, which rates the efficiency, energy efficiency, sustainability, safety, and ergonomics of the systems.

The jurors and their approved advisors then select the finalists during the third phase of the audit. The jury members formulate their own conclusions based on the IFOY Innovation Check, the IFOY Test results, and their own test experiences before the final voting takes place.

Hänel Offi ce and Industrial Storage Systems – one of Germany’s innovation leaders again in 2021

The F.A.Z. INSTITUTE has published a study in Germany which confirms that Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems is again among the country’s innovation leaders in 2021 – a distinction earned for the third time. The study ‘Deutschlands Innovations-führer’ was published by Prognos on behalf of the F.A.Z. INSTITUTE in cooperation with the IMWF Institute for Management and Economy Research.

The selection process is based on data in the EPO Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT) of the European Patent Office. Evaluating the innovativeness and leadership of enterprises in Germany is based on two proven and widely accepted metrics:

Leadership – how much impact does an invention have on other inventions?

Newness / innovativeness of the invention – to what degree can an invention clearly stand out and uniquely distinguish itself from previous inventions?

Both of these qualities are clearly exhibited by German innovation leaders.

The study focused on activities in all patent families worldwide over the past ten years. Innovation leadership and the research con-ducted by patent applicants in Germany, representing more than 500 areas of tech-nological and scientific expertise, were evaluated according to a defined set of metrics.

Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems, as one of the leading providers of intra-logistic solutions worldwide, has made major contributions to the development of automated storage and materials handling through its many inventions and patents.

The study confirms that Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems is ranked among the leading innovators in Germany!
