Honouring the Journey Campaign Official Launched on November 29th

Last week I had the pleasure to participate with over 130 residents of Northumberland in the official launch of the

capital campaign for a new Northumberland Hospice Care Centre. The event was supported by a number of

Community Care Northumberland volunteers, board members and staff. In addition, a number of volunteers who

have been involved in the hospice care centre building committee, and campaign cabinet.

Hosted by Campaign Co-Chairs Gord and Patti Ley, the kick- off event announced early support raised towards the

building and first three years of operating costs have reached close to $1,200,000 in private support.

The Northumberland Hospice Care Centre will act as a hub for Hospice programs and services, including end of life

beds. The facility will offer a centralized, home-like setting with six suites for individuals at the end of life and their

families. Also offered will be palliative navigation, bereavement services, a library of resources, a community

volunteer visiting program, and the potential for day hospice programming and complementary care services.

Projected costs including construction, land costs, fees, furnishings, operations, and equipment total $7,000 000.00.

Government capital support is being sought from the Province in the amount of $1.2M, and a $1M ask will go before

local municipalities. Private support from individuals, businesses/corporations, grants, service groups and in-kind

donations, in the amount of $4.8M rounds off the $7M campaign.

This is a very exciting project for CCN and the early support of the community is indicative of the interest of many

individuals that will build a strong foundation for the new Hospice Care Centre.

Falls Prevention Month in Cobourg

We offer three free Falls Prevention Exercise Classes within the Town of Cobourg.

Two classes are taught by Michael (far

left) from We-Fix-U. The first class

(pictured left) is hosted at Halcyon

Place at 580 Courthouse Rd. on

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30pm.

The second class is hosted at Legion

Village (pictured right) at 111 Hibernia

Street on Wednesdays and Fridays at

3:30pm.

In both classes, participants were working on their individual coordination and balance.

The third class we offer in Cobourg is led by Theo (pictured right) from

the Northumberland Family Health Team at St. Peter’s Anglican Church

located at 240 College Street on Tuesday at 3:00pm and Friday at

11:30am.

During this class, they were using resistance bands to help build

strength. (pictured above)

We had 8 people graduate from the 55 Drive Alive

program offered recently in Trent Hills. The participants

attended a two half day driver refresher course and

successfully received graduation certificates. This

course offers excellent information and reminders,

taught by our own Sherry Gibson, and is part of the

Canada Safety Council Diver Improvement Program.

The cost was $10 which covered the cost of the manual

and participants were able to take it away with them.

The manual is a good resource and is brightly coloured

and includes a Self-Assessment section, Normal Driving

Situations, Hazardous Driving Environment, Driver

Guidance (road signs), Driving Decisions, to name a few.

We were able to capture a picture of 2 of the participants before they left. (L-R) Lucy Hubel who is a Trent Hills

Transportation Volunteer, Sherry Gibson who is CCN staff and Bill Mallory who is also a Trent Hills Transportation

Volunteer.
