Adelaide Zoo Careers Awareness Day 2017 Last term Christian Tinnion, (Year 10 House Leader, Fouviere House) was fortunate enough to attend a Zoo Career Awareness Day. He thoroughly enjoyed this experience and gave us a summary of what he did for the day. Upon arrival, students were introduced to each other and were organised into six different groups. They were then given a talk by Habitat designers as to how they recreate various natural environments for animals and why it is important that they closely mirror their natural habitat. Groups were then taken to a specific habitat and Christian was very happy to be sent to the tiger habitat; where they had to describe the habitat and the various machinery and skilled labour that was required by the habitat. Upon returning to the education centre students then discussed and shared their findings. Following that students were given a talk by the chief bird keeper who brought in a galah and explained how he trains it. He spoke about animal training and the fact that you can teach old animals new tricks. He stressed that you don’t give rewards for bad behaviour and only rewarded good behaviour. The students were given some free time to explore the zoo, Christian visited the reptiles, pandas, otters, hippos, mountain goats and the flamingo (the original pair had been there since 1912) and there is now only one flamingo remaining. Back to the group and students were taken to specific areas to meet with different zoo keepers. Christian went to the giraffes and heard about the giraffe keeper’s interesting career journey which started with him as a childhood friend of Steve Irwin. He had spent time at Taronga Zoo, Melbourne Zoo, Toronto Zoo Canada and the Australian Zoo before heading to Adelaide. During their lunch break (lunch supplied) student’s had another hour for more exploration. Following this they had a talk from the Vet at the zoo who spoke about the best methods to get through schooling to enable entry into Vet studies. Then, one of the TAFE instructors who was a Vet nurse came in, she was running a little late as she had been assisting in an operation on a wombat. She spoke about TAFE pathways into animal related careers. Overall Christian found the day to be very worthwhile and really opened his eyes to what is possible. Adelaide Zoo Careers Awareness Day 2017

Last term Christian Tinnion, (Year 10 House Leader, Fouviere House) was fortunate enough to attend a Zoo Career Awareness Day.

I recently came upon this quote from Tolkien and it resonated quite strongly when thinking about the career journeys that all of us undertake throughout our lives. Sometimes we can undervalue experiences that are perhaps not overtly connected to purposeful career development yet can still offer enormous value and insight into self-discovery and awareness that can shape future directions and decision making. Different opportunities or challenges may arise in unlikely places and can lead us in a direction that we may never have formerly considered. The career journey is a continuous one that encompasses our experiences, personal learning and development and deserves time, care and attention. Sometimes, in this complex world of rapid change just because a specific career "destination" is not immediately apparent, it does not mean that this will always be the case, nor should the myriad of other things that we do be discounted as necessarily irrelevant or unhelpful.

Flinders University Enrichment Day, 11th April 2017

A group of seven SHC Senior students availed themselves of the opportunity to participate in a program held at Flinders University on Tuesday, 11th April. The activities and talks which comprised the day were entitled “Enrichment Program” and were designed to give those taking part

an idea of some of the careers which would be possible upon completion of degree programs being offered by Flinders. Whilst four broad streams were offered, our students chose to take part in only three of these: Education, Humanities & Law; Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences and Social & Behavioural Sciences.

Speaking to the students after the event it seems that all found it enjoyable and all seem to have gleaned something useful from it. For some students it was as much about deciding not to do something as it was becoming enthusiastic for a previously unknown course and career. Our thanks go to Flinders University who continue to offer innovative and imaginative opportunities for our students as part of their overall recruitment strategy. Hopefully more students across all three Senior School year levels will want to participate next year.

Adelaide University Early Entry Program The Early Entry Program is an opportunity provided by The University of

Adelaide allowing SHC students along with other schools around SA to study a Bachelor of Science. Several weeks ago, I attended the first Welcome Session for

the program, where we were given insight into uni life and help that is provided through the program, such as access to the library and staff. We also had the opportunity to meet students from other schools taking part in the program and began making friendships with likeminded peers. I look forward to getting to know the program and people better as the year continues. Paulina Malycha

The Army Reserve Visit On Wednesday 10th May 2017, the Army Reserve provided an information session to students on the

opportunities available in the Army Reserve. It also included information on the Accelerated Training Option which has proved very popular for those considering a gap year in 2018, as it provides a period of full-time work before transitioning to part-time Army Reserve work.

The Army Reserve provides the opportunity for a part-time job where you gain: real work experience and qualifications that will develop your personal qualities and employability; opportunities to network with potential employers; tax-free pay while providing a valuable service to your community.

There are a wide variety of jobs available from combat and medical related positions, through to positions in technical communications, logistics, transport, trades and music. For students wanting the benefits of early leadership and management training, Officer training is available which includes a paid training block at the internationally renowned Royal Military College - Duntroon!

Work Experience for 2017

BEFORE CONSIDERING WORK EXPERIENCE PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing Work Experience students are inducted in the following areas: Work Health & Safety Act 2012, Equal Opportunity and the Children’s Protection Act 1993. Adequate time (approximately 5 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school and is consistent with our Duty of Care to ensure that no student is placed where they may not be safe physically or psychologically.

In addition to this, the Work Experience Form must be signed by the student, workplace provider, parent/guardian (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal (arranged by the school). (The original (copies or faxes are unacceptable) Work Experience Agreement Form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school).

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work Experience is a very valuable opportunity for most students however, it does take time to ensure that the above expectations are met. We are happy to accommodate students in the times allocated. Please do not cause yourself or the College embarrassment by making other arrangements and then asking for exceptions to be made.

Students who wish to do Work Experience during 2017 are advised that the dates are:

10th - 14th July Deadline for paperwork 5th June

24th - 28th July (Yr 10’s and 11’s) Deadline for paperwork 5th June

9th - 13th October Deadline for paperwork 4th September

4th - 8th December Deadline for paperwork 6th November

Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA Work Experience guidelines.

Please note this is general Work Experience only. Students undertaking a Vet program will need to organise their Vet work placement with the Vet Office.

UMAT 2017 Registrations close 2nd June 2017. The test takes place nationally on the 26th July 2017.
