EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Trendsetters,

Remember those Timberland hiking shoes days? Well, for me they are back andwith a vengeance!!

You see, I always say one has to dress up the part to truly feel it, live itand be up to it.Having successfully overcome severe challenges in the earlier part of theyear, and knowing that there will probably be a new set awaiting me in thenear future, I felt the need for my Timberlands! Empowered by the sheer look and feel of them, I promise you, if I could get away with wearing them with an evening dress, I would! And that got me thinking… Why not? Isn’t the ultimate fashion an individualistic statement of an inner feeling that is looking for an outlet? Having said that, as I don’t like to push the envelope unless necessary, I decided to stay away from posh evenings and keep my Timberlands for professional meetings!! To each her little vice I guess… Enjoy yours, Till next issue,

Zeina Mokaddam

NOUF AL-HAJRI

My favorite 2 months of the year have always been January and April. January is usually associated with a new beginning, a new resolution, new plans for a new year and the excitement & joy that comes along in getting things done early. April on the other hand is the start of the spring season, the traditional etymology for “April” comes from the Latin verb aperire, “to open” in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to “open”. May you have a wonderful month full of activities and blooming opportunities.

ALI SULTAN

Spring is a season of resurrection and rebirth. The world prepares to wake up from its winter dormancy to bloom and prosper. Now is the time for you to dust off the winter blues and let your inner spring shine. Don’t be afraid to grow and stand out. Make a statement, be confident and most importantly happy. This is the inspiration for this month’s cover.

SIMON BALSOM

Yves St. Laurent’s assertion that “fashion fades, but style is eternal” has never struck a greater chord than it does today. A look along the catwalks and throughout the hottest streets in the style capitals of the world reveals a host of brands that can trace their heritage back decades, indeed sometimes more than a century. Their secret? To go beyond mere transitory fashion and embrace the permanence of style. This month we celebrate those who continue to follow their own path to unending elegance.

ZAINEB AL-MOSAWI

When I am not in this reality I am in my own circus! I thought to bring that into this issue, taking inspiration from entertainment; old and new. Highlighting the creative outlets we have at our disposal and also with the new season and new step forward I chose to take steps back and look closer at the heritage behind the core of fashion. We have basically put together a ball of inspiration for your embrace of a new season. Enjoy!

The RingmasTeRJohn Galliano

22 THETALK /April / 2013

Page 25: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

John Galliano has created the most spectacular fashion shows of our time. Since his 1984 degree collection, Les Incroyables, which metamorphosed his London art school into a French Revolutionary street scene, he has transported his privileged audiences to more exotic and sartorially blessed places than they could possibly have imagined or experienced. We have dubbed him as the ringmaster of fashion for his incredible theatrical designs.

Having spent the first six years of his life submerged in a sensuous wonderland: Mediterranean colour and swirling, woven textile surrounded him at every turn. Such an environment kindled a love of textiles and design in Galliano from an early age, and Latin influences are prevalent in his later work.

In 1966, Galliano and his family moved to London. A massive culture shock awaited Galliano, as he was removed from his more vibrant former surroundings. His family prided itself immensely on appearance and each time he left the house as a child, Galliano was immaculately dressed. These standards of self presentation, especially when he compared

himself with his more slovenly English schoolmates, made him stand out and taught him important standards of dress, which he would require later in life. However, he was not considered an outstanding student. It was not until Galliano reached design school and was around people more like himself that he began to flourish.

Once Galliano had graduated from City and East London College, he enrolled at Central Saint Martins, where he made a remarkable impact. His graduation collection, titled ‘Les Incroyables’, made brilliant by his romantic flair and diligence, received huge approval. Indeed, his whole line was hastily snapped up and put into the window of Browns boutique. Galliano left Central Saint Martins in 1983 with a first class degree and a healthy stockpile of critical acclaim.

In 1984, Galliano unleashed his own label. More critical approval followed. His daring reinvention of romantic themes and delicate, superbly tailored garments were his trademarks. In 1987, he received the ‘British Designer of the Year’ award. However, critical success was not matched by major financial success. He lost backers and did not have enough money

to show for several seasons. In frustration, he quit London for Paris in the early 1990s. This was not an immediate solution. Several times Galliano was almost forced to declare bankruptcy. This was made all the more bitter by the fact that, while he struggled for money, his critical praise continued unabated.

Fortunately, the admiration of the fashion community allowed him to continue. Fashion editors and critics were always busy trying to get work for Galliano, and models, like Kate Moss, worked for him out of friendship rather than money.

In 1995, Galliano finally got the break he so richly deserved: he became the first Englishman to head a French couture house, when he was put in charge of Givenchy. Immersing himself in the role, he went on to present his first couture show at the helm of the company at the beginning of 1996, impressing those who attended the event at the Stade Francais. The collection was well received, with adulation and praise for his creative genius coming from critics and the fashion

media. Impressed by this success and others, luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, which owned Givenchy, had Galliano transferred to Christian Dior less than two years later, where he replaced Italian designer Gianfranco Ferre. He staged his first couture show for the luxury brand in January 1997, the same time the label was celebrating its 50th anniversary. The same year also saw Galliano gain recognition after being declared British Designer of the Year, although he had to share the award with Alexander McQueen, his successor at Givenchy. This was the fourth time he had won the accolade, having triumphed in 1987, 1994 and 1995.

His knack for taking themes and styles, often Latin or romantic, from the past, and somehow making them contemporary and edgy, was astonishing. Perhaps just as remarkable was the perseverance and conviction of the man. He managed to keep his talent undiluted through difficult times and emerged with glory and success. However, Galliano hit the headlines for all

of the wrong reasons in 2011 when a video emerged of him allegedly making anti-sematic remarks to Italian tourists in a Paris bar. Actress Natalie Portman, who is the face of the Miss Dior Cherie fragrance and is of Jewish ancestry, said she was disgusted by the comments. After suspending the designer in February 2011, Dior announced in March 2011 that it has begun proceedings to permanently dismiss Galliano. Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano said he “firmly” condemned the remarks made by the fashion designer.

Galliano finished last month grimly for the fashion industry when he turned up at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London to advise aspiring students. The college was quick to quash rumours that the former Christian Dior director would return to work there. “For several years, second-year students have been set a project on a theme set by John Galliano, he

does not have a teaching

post at

Central Saint Martins.”The designer is suing Dior for over 2.5 million KD, alleging unfair dismissal. We just hope that he works it all out and establishes a new platform for himself so that he can continue to deliver his beautiful designs.

al mahha Mashael Basheer

As hard working as she is determined; Mashael began working whilst studying at Kuwait University. Starting off as a freelance writer for newspapers then moving on to various experiences until landing her job as a writer for KUNA; her most distinctive work, for us, would have to be her insightful and endearing blog almahha.com Focusing on art and everything that it stands for, she brings us closer to beauty with every post. We had to get more personal with the rising star!

Why the name Almahha?

I wanted an Arabic name that is easy for westerners to read and I wanted something that represents specifically the Gulf. Almahha is an Oryx found in this region which is a type of female deer that has these huge beautiful eyes. I love to emphasize the beauty in this part of the world and I think that deer represents that perfectly.

And just as Mashael has a great eye for art,

she has beautiful eyes to match. Making her blog Almahha perfectly named with an incredible purpose.

Art is a means of communication; it is a way of life. It is a way of sending a message in a sophisticated way. It affects a person’s feelings. That is why I love focusing on it. I always want to know other people’s opinion on the art I’m looking at and never ask ‘what do you see?’ I ask ‘how do you feel?’ it is really important to me to see the connection people have with the artwork, not just my own connection. I want to know what is shared and what is more personal.

There was a time when I took the opinion of my younger sister. At the time she was eleven, and I posted about the Lebanese photographer Mohammad Bader on the project he did depicting the rituals of Ashura in Lebanon, I asked her ‘What do you think?’ and the conversation with her made me realize that if a child understood it very well and it moved her, I knew that this

project is speaking to a wide range of people, of different ages. That moved me.

What was it that made you start the blog?

The blog started in November 2011. I was constantly going back and forth to Bahrain since I was doing my masters in modern communication there to get more involved in journalism so that I work at the United Nations. I started going to art galleries every time I was there. Not knowing we had any in Kuwait. I use to love art so visiting the galleries brought me back into this world of creativity.

I became very interested and wouldn’t miss anything that was part of

the art scene. Then here in Kuwait I started to look for art exhibitions. A friend of mine was participating in a group exhibition at FA Gallery called ‘Without Boundaries’ at that point I wanted to write for my job

at KUNA. So I asked the gallery

LOCAL BLOGGER

28 THETALK /April / 2013

Page 31: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

manager if I can cover the event and he was happy for me to do that. That night I had met a lot of incredible photographers and artists, one of which was Mohammad Sharaf. I was amazed at how much talent there was, a lot of young Kuwaitis are working on themselves. So I sent the article to KUNA but working in a governmental agency is very specific.

They want a formal description and in a very certain way but to describe art is not like that. Writing about art has to be liberated from the restrictions around you. It should be anything but formal. Since the artists themselves do not stay within restrictions. They think outside the box and they produce something beautiful that out of respect you need to write something that honestly represents that state of mind. That’s how the blog began. You never know what the experiences you go through in life are preparing you for...

What are you hoping to achieve with it?

You see how in Kuwait there’s a lot of buzz on a new restaurant, or a brand, I want to do the

same for an artwork. I was asked why I am doing this very locally in Kuwait that is because I want to encourage Kuwaitis. I understand that the art scene in Dubai is huge. It is so diverse and so dynamic; it is a non-stop wheel of events. I don’t want to just go there and report about it, I want to support the ones in Kuwait so that we have the same here.

What makes you choose the art that you choose to cover?

If you asked me a year ago I would have a completely different answer. I would have been much more specific. I don’t like sculptures I like paintings, I like abstract I don’t like still life…

Now, I don’t have anything specific that I like. I choose art that moves me. Sometimes when I see an art piece I feel like it is talking to me and that is when I know I want to cover it, and sometimes artworks make you only want to focus on it but sometimes it makes you wonder about the artist himself. Who is behind what I am looking at? And that is when I approach the artist; which is quite rare because I don’t always

AL MAHHA

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 29

Page 32: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

connect with the artist over the art itself.

Another reason why I wanted to write a blog was that I would sit with people and discuss art and I would hear people say I’m sure what I am seeing is wrong, the artist knows. What they don’t know is that there is no such thing as right or wrong in art. It is everyone’s interpretation of it. It is about making you feel something personal and deeper to you because otherwise it is just an art deco. It is very important to connect with art. Connecting, this invisible thread between you and the artwork, to whichever form of art it may be. If it exists then the artist has successfully managed to communicate with you and to deliver the message to you.

How has the experience of having a blog been for you?

I didn’t get much support. It wasn’t something people understood but at the end of the day as stressful as it is carrying it all on your own is, it is up to you to listen to the one supporter or to the ten criticizers. I chose to listen to the one and never looked back and I am really enjoying it. This is just the beginning for me.

Having an art blog and writing about it in

a country that unfortunately doesn’t give enough attention to the art scene is a major encouragement for me.

What direction are you taking for the next five years?

I know that I will be heavily part of the art and cultural scene. That is definite. I hope to have an art center for children. To build the creativity in our future, I would like to give the children here a place where art can be educated to them and also for them to express themselves and have the tools to accomplish that creativity.

Are eyes kept steering down to her shoes, finally we had to ask the question, where are they from?

An independent boutique in London.

Of course you won’t find Mashael shopping in Selfridges or Harrods. She strives for creativity and expression. Something that glistens in her eyes shows you instantly how passionate she is. We look forward to seeing much more of her. She is a Kuwaiti that is already making

a huge difference for our country, and we can bank on the fact that she will be doing a lot more with every step she takes. We will continue to keep a close watch on her blog: almahha.com

a sTaR is BoRnEvery season new faces appear on the runway and that is where models’ careers are made. We all take inspiration from models. They have the strongest applicable view from all aspects of the fashion industry. They experience some of everything that happens. From the concepts of the fashion shows, photoshoots and collections, to the designs, the alterations and the thought processes expressed by the designers themselves. So when new models come onto the scene it is exciting to have an added, new, fresh perspective. Some of the models worth keeping an eye out on would have to be Polish native Karolina Waz, the Russian Kristina Romanova, Dutch model Lucette Van Beek and leading the male model pack are the two Swedish hunks; Hampus Luck and Viggo Jonason. Watch out for these newcomers that we can see will soon become rising stars!

Taking CenTeR sTageThere was a mix of models, from seasons back, years back, to brand new and fresh off the streets. A great variety just like the clothes they adorned. Both the models and the outfits they wore made a huge impact in the latest runway shows; proving that the fashion world is only getting better. Yes we can take inspiration from past designs, but only to create something more magnificent. That is exactly what is happening with every new show presented by established designers. The trend we are seeing most that is resonating through fashion and the world in general is exaggeration. We all have a natural need for the dramatic, so why not let that seep on to our looks and style? With a defined look and strong character the world can be our stage!

BReak a legIts bad luck to say good luck in the world of theatre. Instead? “Break a leg” is used. A phrase models dread in times of the runway, for slips on the long stretched stage are seen all too often. The slick flooring and unearthly shoes make “Hitting the stage” much more literal than intended. But even with that it can be done gracefully and even artistically; as Richie Rich did on his rollerblades in his show, A Muse by Richie Rich collection show. There are the conscious models that simply take-off their shoes and walk with them down the catwalk, and then there are those who just decide to leave the stilettos behind on the floor, not the most practical for the rest to come walking down. Tut tut.

HER STYLE ICON

The FiRe-BReaTheREllie Goulding

Never likely to be one of those singers who is content just to turn up, lay down a main vocal part and leave, Ellie’s approach to writing and recording is, she admits, borderline obsessive – but then, anything less, she says, would be a waste of time.

44 THETALK /April / 2013

Page 47: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

A s her debut album, Bright Lights, made so thrillingly clear, Ellie Goulding uses her voice as a texture in much the same way that a skilled instrumentalist would. It is a sound – in Ellie’s case, an utterly distinctive and unforgettable one – that can play as important a role in her songs as any other musical detail.

The new record Halcyon describes a journey out of heartache and towards hope. It is almost as if you can hear Ellie’s psyche shrinking and then renewing, rebooting itself after two-and-a-half tumultuous years in her life. This was followed after she released an album that includes select songs from Bright Lights, remixed to mimic the rhythm of a run. Running being her favourite sport which she practices daily resulted in the EP Run Into The Light.

Ellie’s success in America – her single, Lights, is still an immovable fixture in the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, after 35 weeks – has been another experience she finds it hard to describe. America has clearly got under her skin. “They embrace everything,” Ellie says. “They’ll take your biggest fault and turn it into something positive. And the work ethic in music over there isn’t like anything I’ve ever known. You get back to your hotel at one in the morning and someone will contact you and go, ‘Do you want to come over to the studio?’. So over you go, and there’s Swedish House Mafia and Skrillex there, and will.I.am in the next-door studio. Everyone’s just hanging out, making music.”

As for her fashion sense, it is clear that Ellie dresses depending on the occasion. It seems to come easy for her as she hits every red carpet in a perfectly clad ensemble, completely appropriate for the event. The little added edge may come from her former boyfriend, Skrillex; an odd pairing for fans in England who were in shock to know the two were dating. Worried about the bad boy effecting their British angel. The relationship did not last due to the long distance. Although short, it made an impact on the singer for many of her songs. Songs that take us away with her magnitising voice and words that express so much more than the surface presented. With the ability to hit more chords than imaginable, a beautiful personality and deep psyche has made her an icon with only two official album releases. This is only the beginning of her blossoming career as she will be bringing more musical fire to our ears.

HIS & HER SEASON’S TREND

The FRonT Row With all our favourite musicians touring the world after each album release it has become so easy to hop on a plane to Dubai for a weekend just to catch a show, or to schedule sometime whilst abroad to be part of the great experience of live music! Although some artists are better off heard behind all the tweaking technology but for the most part it is about the whole experience. Joining thousands of people with the same shared interest and making memories is what it is all about. Some artists such as Beyonce and Madonna go all out and turn it into a show that can rival the theatre.

HIS STYLE ICON

The eCCenTRikJack White

Jack White; being the vocalist, guitarist and pianist of The White Stripes, vocalist and guitarist for The Raconteurs and the drummer of The Dead Weather and solo artist with his album Blunderbuss, makes him an artist that just keeps on giving. Always the expressive character, he finds ways in channeling his creative energy through his music which attracts fans from all walks of life. He has a cult following seperate from his associations with bands and projects. Jack White is his own entity whether he chooses to be or not.

60 THETALK /April / 2013

Page 63: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

O f Polish, scottish, and Canadian descent, Jack is the youngest of ten children. He began playing the drums at the mere age of six. Growing up listening to the blues and 1960s rock which heavily influenced the direction of his life. In 2005 on 60 Minutes, White told Mike Wallace that his life could have turned out differently. “I’d got accepted to a seminary in Wisconsin, and I was gonna become a priest, but at the last second I thought, ‘I’ll just go to public school. I had just gotten a new amplifier in my bedroom, and I didn’t think I was allowed to take it with me.” We are very thankful for that amplifier!

Jack White first came onto the scene as one half of The White Stripes. The other half was his ex-wife, Meg White, whom he claimed was his sister. The world believed they were siblings for years until records showed that the pair were married and that Jack took Meg’s last name. Not many people cared after the discovery but instead found that it funnily reflected their eccentric style. They saw great success with their new sound bringing a breath of fresh air to music that was commercially becoming monotone.

He is ranked No. 17 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. The recognition for his talent enabled him to collaborate as a solo artist with other renowned musicians, such as Beck, The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Electric Six, Insane Clown Posse, and Loretta Lynn, whose 2004 album Van Lear Rose he produced and performed on.

Jack dabbled in acting when he appeared in the romantic favourite, Cold Mountain, where he met his short-term flame Renee Zellweger. It was not long after that he met British model Karen Elson. The two met on the set of The White Stripes’ music video “Blue Orchid” and were married in 2005. Meg White was Karen’s maid of honor at the couple’s wedding.

Six years later Jack and Karen invited all their friends and family in celebration of their divorce. No surprise there since his first ex-wife still remains to be his best friend. As his relationships and music differ from the norms, so does his fashion sense. A devoted fan of black; the colour is a staple in his style. Pointy shoes and hats come to play often, from his everyday to his red carpet looks. Even when keeping it extremely simple, Jack manages to make a statement.

64 THETALK /April / 2013

Page 67: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

A n absolute ball of energy Mohammad is a character unlike any other. With a great sense of humor, an EXTREMELY easy going personality and channeled ambition, he is leading the way with his company AL GAS Events. He brings us the best in terms of quality, professionalism and entertainment. We have been fans of his work since 2010 when he first founded his company. Finally, we had the chance to spend time with him one on one to understand more on how he is able to organize the best events in the country!

How did the idea for the company begin?

I started making a couple of projects and events while I was at University, one of which was called Yalla Shabab; supporting young entrepreneurs and that’s when I knew I would want to start this company.

I founded the company a year before graduat-ing. We are expanding, we are doing business across the globe and we have many affiliates in the region that are holding events under our name. From comedy shows to seminars, we will organize them. We also hold a speakers house, we get speakers and also arrange re-gional tours for them. We also work as a Talent agency. For example you have an event, you need an MC or comedian; we provide that.

How do you pick the talents you sign?

The first three comedians I approached myself, those are Mohammed Aqua, Bashar Aljazzaf and Ahmad Alshammari. I met them and just had to sign them and now we have the series That Comedy Show. When I see the talent, the charisma, the quality, the fire, I sign them!

Do you spend a lot of time with the comedi-ans?

At the shows I’m usually running around mak-ing sure everything is perfect so I don’t stay with them too much but we hang out a lot, they are really great guys, great personalities, very real and genuine and of course very funny.

Who is the most recent talent you have signed on?

THE TALENT SCOUT

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 65

Page 68: Issue 29/50 - April 2013

We signed with Faces of Disco the duo from Britain’s Got Talent. We are their middle-east agents.

That is amazing! How did you manage that?

I travel a lot for work and in general. One of my favourite cities is London. I go there many times a year. I met them there, I saw them performing in Covent Garden so I approached them of course!

Our eyes beam with delight! Which are your favourite areas in London?

Camden Town, Covent Garden and any place by the river really.

And now we love him!!

What are some of your hobbies?

In terms of sports squash is my favourite, I love it. I am a music junkie. Looking through my mu-sic collection you will find music from the 50’s till date and I love classic cars. Old is gold.

Who are some of your favourite musicians?

Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Louis Arm-stong. Elvis Presley is my all time favourite. He is The King! Then from current music I love Example and Florence + The Machines.

Back to classic cars, how are they a hob-bie? I collect them, I have three so far. One of which is my grandfather’s car which my aunt kept it with her and gave to me when I turned eigh-teen. It is a 1983 Mercedes S-Class. I also have King Kreole, my 1978 Cadillac Seville Opera and a 1980 Z28 Camaro.

King Kreole?

Yes! I named the Cadillac after the Elvis Pres-ley movie/song.

Nice! Do you have any other collections?

Motorcycles. Love them. I have one; it is new but with a very classic look.

You are quite the collector!

It runs in the family! My mum is a Matryoshka Doll collector, she travels for them, has them all

around the house, I can’t even count how many there are. Different colours, sizes, you name it.My dad is also a vintage junkie like I am. He collects stamps and coins, classics! I use to travel with my dad and visit stamp and coin ex-hibitions and got pretty into it from when I was 10 to 14 years old. But I have stopped those collections and focusing on my new ones.

Yes, like collecting talents!

What is the next thing happening by AL GAS Events?

We have an Egyptian company that we have partnered with to hold The Knowledge Club. We organize seminars throughout the year and put them all together into one package. We are getting six of the top international speakers in Kuwait. One of which is Jack Canfield, the co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. He will be here for the first time ever. Another is Tony Buzan the master of Mind Mapping.

We love what he is doing. Bringing great knowledge and entertainment to us in the most amazingly organized and perfectly conducted ways!

VANESSA PARADIS IS THE FACE OF CONSCIOUS, AS H&M LAUNCHES GARMENT COLLECTING

Vanessa Paradis is the face of Conscious at H&M this spring, wearing pieces in the campaign that are both on-trend and also more-sustainable. It is all part of H&M’s ongoing commitment to a more sustainable fashion future, showing that the best fashion can be made from Conscious materials.

The actress and singer wear pieces as a ruffle-edged yellow sundress, as well as an embellished zip-up utility jacket worn with botanical print trousers. The pieces are part of a collection full of optimism for spring, with romantic styles like a floor-length dress alongside sporty shapes such as a cropped jumpsuit and a tropical print T-shirt dress. There are accessories too, such as ankle-strap heels, and the entire collection is made from more sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, and Tencel.

Vanessa Paradis says, “I like being part of something like the Conscious collection at H&M. I try my best to shop consciously, and vintage is very much part of my wardrobe. I love the style and it works in an eco-friendly way because I like to use and reuse old clothes.”

FASHION BRAND PREVIEW

Coinciding with the campaign will be the launch of a Conscious garment collecting action at H&M. Customers will be able to bring any unwanted garments from any label to selected stores, and in return for each bag receive an H&M voucher, to a maximum of two bags per customer per day. H&M is the first store to encourage garment return on this scale, in an effort to prevent clothing from going to landfill.

Al Ostoura: What inspired you to become a designer?Ines Di Santo: I believe that every woman loves fashion. Women appreciate beauty, both within and in those around them. I aim to make every bride’s dream come true – of being a princess on her wedding day.

Al Ostoura: How did you start your professional journey?Ines Di Santo: I actually started out with a $10 machine I found. I used to work at a boutique earlier; I designed a dress there and displayed it in the vitrine. A French lady was enamored by the dress and came by almost every day to request for a discount on the price. However, the store owner wouldn’t allow it. Finally, she spoke to the customer herself and arranged for me to design the dress with the cost of materials to be paid directly to me. That was the beginning of my journey, and I haven’t looked back since. I design because I love it, and not for the money. It is not work, but a hobby for me.

Al Ostoura: What sets Ines Di Santo apart from other bridal designers?Ines Di Santo: I treat each customer with the

same respect and warmth. Every person is important to me, not just celebrity clients. All my designs are crafted from 100% Italian silk, because I only believe in using the highest quality materials to create my designs. I studied Italian and Spanish dress cuts with a French teacher, which gave me the best of all worlds. A special draping technique is used in the dresses, which contours a woman’s figure and makes it appear slimmer and more proportionate.

Al Ostoura: What is a typical day for you like?Ines Di Santo: The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to thank God for everything he has blessed me with. It was destiny that brought me from my hometown in Argentina to where I am today in Canada. My work day is very fulfilling since I work with my daughter Veronica. The business is run as a mother-daughter venture, which is a wonderful feeling for me as a mother. It is a very fulfilling experience.

Al Ostoura: How would you term your experience in Kuwait with Al Ostoura?Ines Di Santo: I thank Al Ostoura for inviting me to Kuwait, and I have had a wonderful time here. The people are very nice and polite and they are so knowledgeable about fashion. I am so pleased to see the customers here appreciating my collection. I respect Kuwait’s culture as it is so family oriented. This inspires me further to create more designs for the Middle East market.I admire Najla Maatouk as she is a truly elegant lady, and is an icon for the fashion industry. The Al Ostoura stores too, are very elite and tastefully and perfectly decorated. I hope to come again soon and interact with more people.

Italian born designer Ines Di Santo was raised in Europe and South America. She is recognized globally as a leading evening wear and bridal couture designer. Her Italian and Spanish heritage is revealed in her designs, which bloom with unrestrained luxury. The designer showcases two collections every year – on the runways of New York and also in Italy.

Ines’ designs are crafted to drape, enhance, highlight and transform the best features of a woman, using her near instinctual understanding of the female form. With her signature ruching and hand-tailoring, the wedding gowns feature sumptuously detailed bodices with beading, lace work and embroidery; combined with gorgeously layered skirts adorned with pleats and ruffles. Ines believes that no bride can deny the romance and sentimental connections associated with a wedding gown. To this scenario, Ines adds a luxurious touch of couture, making every bride feel like royalty on her special day. Al Ostoura invited Ines for a private bridal show and spoke with her to unveiled the designer’s raison d’être.

OMEGA SEDNA TM

Sedna™ gold is the name OMEGA has given to a new alloy that stunningly blends three elements: gold, copper and palladium. It is an 18K rose gold, meaning that it has a minimum gold content of 75%. Sedna™’s unique rose colour is a result, in part, of just the right proportion of copper: Its palladium content helps to ensure that the reddish hue of Sedna™ gold will be particularly long lasting. It takes its name from a trans-Neptunian object which astronomers called Sedna – the same name as an Inuit goddess who is said to live at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. The surface of the orbiting object has been described as one of the reddest in our Solar System.

Swatch Group assembled a team of top metallurgists and scientists from several of its companies with the shared goal of creating an 18K rose gold alloy whose colour would be not only beautiful but enduring. Sedna™ gold – developed 100% in house by the Swatch Group team – is the patented, breath-taking confirmation of their success.

CONSTELLATION SEDNA

The OMEGA Constellation Sedna is the first watch to be crafted in 18K Sedna™ gold. This limited edition wristwatch seamlessly blends the timeless aesthetic appeal of a legendary watch

family with the world premiere of an innovative material. 18K Sedna™ gold, a patented alloy

blending gold, copper and palladium, has been created to ensure that the unique rose gold lustre of the watch case

will be especially long-lasting. The indexes and hands are also made of 18K Sedna™ gold, as is the clasp on its strap.

The distinctive timepiece has a polished casebody with a brushed bezel

emboldened by tone-in-tone Roman numerals. It has a luxurious silvery “pie-

pan” dial inspired by that of the very first Constellation launched in 1952. The timepiece

is presented on a strap crafted from fine brown leather. The watch is equipped with OMEGA’s innovative Si14 silicon balance spring and the industry-changing OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8501, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. The OMEGA Constellation Sedna water resistant to 10 bar (100 metres / 330 feet).

The OMEGA Constellation Sedna will be produced in an edition limited to 1,952 pieces, signifying the year OMEGA debuted the renowned Constellation watch family. It is delivered in a special wooden presentation box with a rose-coloured lining. The watch has a full four-year warranty.

CAR PREVIEW

The long wait is over; the thrillingly powerful Jaguar sports car is has arrived to Al-Zayani showroom. Unveiled with the presence of guests and media friends, the all new F-Type gained a lot of interest. The two-seater convertible comes from a history of over 75 years of the most gorgeous and desirable cars ever built; adding to it the power of the new technologies to give the market a completely different ‘feel’ to what sports cars are all about.

Derek Davies, Automotive Director at Al-Zayani, said: “This beautifully powerful sports car from Jaguar will open up new windows here in Kuwait. After its announcement, customers have been anticipating its arrival and, now, it is finally here for all its admirers to enjoy.”

Three variants will be available at launch – F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine.

A new 3.0-litre V6, developed from Jaguar’s highly acclaimed 5.0-litre V8, is available in either 340PS or 380PS variants, powering the F-TYPE and F-TYPE S respectively. Both applications exhibit the same free-revving, willing nature that encourages the enthusiastic driver to explore the full extent of the engines’ abilities.

An active exhaust system, which is standard on the S and V8 S models, adds another dimension of driver-engagement. Valves in the exhaust system open under load from 3000rpm which allows the exhaust note to build to a thrilling crescendo at the redline.

The F-TYPE has a set of eight closely-spaced, sporting ratios in its Quickshift transmission, giving greater driver control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest.

The company’s eye to the future is encapsulated in the assertive design language that deliberately challenges preconceptions. Jaguars have always defined sinuous, muscular simplicity and the F-TYPE is no exception, its shape being defined by two ‘heartlines’ forming the front and rear wings.

Its journey is taken up at this point by the second

heartline which swells out to form the muscular rear haunch before sweeping dramatically around the sensual low tail, made possible by the inclusion of an active rear spoiler which deploys at speed to reduce lift by up to 120kg. Full LED rear lamps create a new Jaguar sports car signature by reinterpreting classic cues from the past and, by wrapping around to the trailing edge of the rear wheelarch, emphasise the powerful stance of the car and its rear-wheel drive sporting potential.

The focus on driver involvement and sporting performance in the F-TYPE is emphasised by the ‘one plus one’ layout of the asymmetric cabin. Taking inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by function. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the

eight-speed transmission. The air vents on top of the dashboard will only deploy when instructed to by either the driver or complex control algorithms, staying tucked discreetly out of sight in other circumstances.

Fahed Al-Anezi, Jaguar Brand Manager at Al-Zayani, said: “The F-Type is a completely new Jaguar that we will see a big number of on the Kuwaiti roads this year. The design, the details and the technological advancements that this sports car carries are beyond what the Kuwaiti market has experienced in any other car in its category.”

The all new sports car, the Jaguar F-Type is now in Kuwait.

a 10,000 square foot space overlooking the Grand Avenue of The Avenues. The restaurant’s scale and spacious layout echoes the grand scope of Harvey Nichols Kuwait’s shopping experience while managing to convey a sense of intimacy and serenity.

Véranda’s muted color palette and open layout combine to create a high-style retreat, with light wood beams on one side of the dining area buttressing an all-encompassing white ceiling, composed of curvaceous layers; these undulating forms ultimately bend into layered, white walls opposite the beam structures. The minimalist surroundings, low dining tables and complimentary views from each seat encourage guests to relax and embrace the easy setting and delectable food on offer, and the subtle yet definite segregation of two different seating sections – the upper section being cosier and more intimate, the lower being more open and facing the Grand Avenue

– offer clientele the option of having a private retreat or a meal with a view.

Landscaping also plays a pivotal role in Véranda’s composition. Plants drape from the walls at varying heights and shapely trees are strategically placed throughout the dining area. Véranda’s designers also teamed up with artist Bram Tihany, who created a monumental, photographic mural depicting site-specific topiary sculptures of playful forms resembling stilettos, handbags and sunglasses. Located at the entrance of the restaurant, this majestic bespoke mural transforms the patrons’ arrival to the space into a memorable event.

Located on the first floor of Harvey Nichols Kuwait, guests can enter Véranda directly off the Grand Avenue and experience haute cuisine of a lifetime for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and all those magnificent moments in between.

Swinton is taking part in a “still life” installation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Yesterday, the Vogue cover girl slept in a glass box for eight hours in the middle of the famed art gallery as surprised visitors watched on. The actress will participate in the one-person piece a further six times over the next year, all held in different locations at MOMA. The installation is called The Maybe and was first held at The Serpentine Gallery in London in 1995. At the time, the piece attracted 22,000 visitors and received a Turner Prize nomination. When it comes to her roles in movies and even her fashion sense, Tilda has always had an artistic style. Breaking boundaries with androgynous looks and breaking her ethereal beauty with sharp hairstyles and makeup, or better yet lack thereof. We love what she is doing, keep it up Tilds!

On Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop, the actress has posted her favourite looks for spring and summer. We are not sure who her lifestyle website is targeting exactly since the total of 8 looks add up to over 150,000 KD. Keeping in mind a couple of looks are meant for casual everyday and even a ‘Maxi at Home’ ensemble. She seems to be a bit in her own world since even her recipes for homemade dishes would cost you more than a feast at Nobu. The ingredients are hard to find and the equipment needed would require a house of their own to store them. Nevertheless, we can’t help but enjoy her website for inspiration and for ideas and we glee with excitement when we find a recipe that is actually do-able. All in all her website is very classy and chic, and we love that she is honest and doesn’t shy away from her indulgences. Bless!

After the huge success of ‘Skyfall’, the most successful out of all twenty-three of the movies, Studio MGM is already developing the script for the next one. MGM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber said: “We are currently developing the screenplay and working with our partners. We look forward to developing the script soon and signing a director.

We are hoping within the next three years it will be released.” They hope to announce a director in the near future however, ‘Skyfall’ director Sam Mendes has already confirmed he will not be directing it due to his busy schedule. Now we are really hoping Quentin Tarantino would direct it. Can you imagine his spin on the franchise? It would be brilliant. Here’s to wishful thinking..

We can’t wait for every new episode of this genius show to air; however, Season 3 is the reason why the show even began. “Watch those beautiful trailers, but seriously, this is the one that we’ve been looking forward to for so long because when we read the books, even before we pitched it to HBO, long before we knew it’d be a series, we got to the third book and started calling each other [with] this feverish panic, because we just thought, if we can get this far — there’s so many of our favorite scenes from the whole saga… in this season coming up,” Says the “Game of Thrones” Executive Producer. Whilst filming the scenes across five different countries, even the tough Northern Irish crew couldn’t help but cry from the drama that took place. Hmm… challenge accepted!

From time to time will be out to take a bath.’ He is thought to have supported himself by selling virtual goods for real money. He has a monthly income of 2,000 yen, or 106 KD, of which 25 KD is paid as a fee to the cafe every month. China has a well-documented problem with young people’s addictions to gaming, with reports of camps designed to cure children of their internet cravings. It was reported earlier this year that the father of a 23-year-old Chinese man hired ‘online assassins’ to kill his avatar repeatedly, in the hope his son would give up and get a job.

Alexander Marchenko decided to construct the traditional 17th century-style wooden sailing vessel after watching blockbuster hit Pirates of the Caribbean at his local cinema. Inspired by the hit movie series, the 38-year-old has spent more than two years working on his labour of love in a bid to achieve his childhood dreams. With no experience in the art of ship building, the determined entrepreneur researched the project online where he downloaded pictures of the ship. Moored to a bank of the Yenisei River in the Siberian Taiga area in Khakassia region, Mr Marchenko hopes his beloved ship will become a world famous tourist attraction. Made from locally-sourced pine and cedar wood, the Russian native’s ambitious project is now nearing its completion. As the winter weather continues to cause chaos in England, the bumbling thieves were tracked down by police after officers simply followed their footprints in the snow leading away from the store and to a block of flats nearby. The robbery at the One Stop store in Whitnash at around 7:30am on Saturday saw members of staff threatened by two men who also stole money and scratch cards. Having followed the footprints in the snow,

officers moved on to a second address following further enquiries and subsequently arrested four people. Two others were then arrested later in the day. Of the six arrested, four appeared in court charged with robbery, while the others were released without charge. The story sounds like an episode of Scooby Doo!

Less than a week old, Flake, Frosty and Snowy have been adorned with brightly-coloured woolly jumpers to protect them from the Arctic weather that has the UK in its icy grip. ‘We’ve had to take them inside to keep them extra warm as we have families planning to come to our farm this Easter – but I know many farmers have been suffering heavily in the snow. ‘We’re giving them that little helping hand to ease them through their first weeks and they’re definitely enjoying their new style.’ While the woolly jumpers are undoubtedly cute, the wintry weather is no laughing matter for livestock. Thousands of animals are feared to have been killed following blizzards in the past month. Let’s pray that they get through!

Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, who at 16st is believed to be the country’s heaviest footballer, enjoyed making his critics eat their words when he scored his first professional hat-trick in the win against Accrington. Akinfenwa, a cult figure at the Cobblers due to the size of his shorts as well as his goal tally, is no stranger to chants about his weight. But the London-born striker says the terrace jeers are a motivating factor. “Their fans were giving me some stick a couple of minutes before my first goal so it was nice to shut them up a little bit,” he told the Northampton Chronicle. “It’s a beautiful thing. I want them to talk when they need to talk. I know it’s pure banter and part and parcel of football. When they do that, I

generally score so they need to keep doing it so I can keep scoring goals. “If I was playing a game and they weren’t doing it I would think something was strange so they can do what they’ve got to do and I’ll do what I’ve got to do.” Nicknamed The Beast, Akinfenwa admits: “I eat loads — but I’m not a McDonald’s or fast food guy. But I think I should have shares in Nandos because I live there so much.”Akinfenwa’s fame has already spread beyond Northampton fans. He is the CEO of HAHA! clothing range, and the star of its popular ‘2 big 2 play football’ T-shirts, which retail for 10 KD. He even has a slogan, something he calls ‘Beast Mode’.

Maria Sharapova prevailed 7-5, 7-5 despite turning in an error-strewn display, the third-seeded Russian racking up almost 60 unforced errors and committing 13 double faults.

Fortunately for Sharapova, who saved three set points in the second, Errani did not have the weapons to take advantage and she did just enough to set up a last-four encounter with 22nd seed Jelena Jankovic. “Sara is extremely difficult to play,” Sharapova said. “She doesn’t have the height or the power, but she gets so many balls back and stays so consistent, and does it over and over again. “She is so consistent. She also has great court coverage and variety. She really makes you work. “She can do a lot of things with that court coverage and variety when she has time, so my success in the beginning of the match and in some other points was when I didn’t give her that opportunity. But most of the time I did, and that’s why she kept coming back and kept playing really well out there.” “I feel very lucky that I’m through. She had her

chances to win that second set - who knows what would have happened. I’m lucky to get to the next one and have a chance to be in the semis again.” Sharapova is bidding for her first win at the Florida event after four previous runner-up finishes, including back-to-back final defeats in each of the last two years. Standing in her way in the last four is Serbia’s Jankovic, who beat another Italian, Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3. In the men’s draw, third seed David Ferrer came from a set down to beat Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and set up a semi-final with Novak Djokovic’s conqueror, Tommy Haas. Ferrer dropped the first set despite going up a break, but was in control from there - particularly in the final set as he broke three times and dropped just four points on serve.

“I was a little bit nervous in the first set and part of the second,” Ferrer said. “But I tried to fight every point, to be focused and I had a good feeling in the final of the second set and of course in the third one.”

HEALTH

Run ThRough!

1.Healthy heart Running is one of the best ways to give your heart muscle an effective workout. By running regularly you can improve circulation, and reduce the risk of a heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke.

2.Weight loss The average runner burns 1,000 calories an hour during a training session. So expect to get thinner, which will in turn help you run faster.

3.Osteoporosis If you run on a regular basis you are continually taxing your muscles and bones so the bones are stimulated to remain stronger and do not easily weaken with age. So bye bye osteoporosis.

4.Mental health A regular running habit will you lift your mood and build self-esteem. It also increases your self-confidence as you reach fitness and/or weight loss goals. Running can help relieve mild depression.

5.Sleep Studies show that runners find it easier to get to sleep at night and sleep longer. Insomniacs take note.

6.Stress Running increases your ability to cope with everyday minor irritations and stresses.

7.Happiness Endorphins engendered by exercise mean that people who run are often happier than those who don’t: ever felt that sense of elation during or after a run (known as the runner’s high)? Running regularly can also improve patience, humour and ambition, and make you more good-tempered and easy-going.

8.Anxiety Runners generally have a lower level of anxiety than those who don’t run. One study suggests that regular training reduces the activity of the serotonin receptors in the brain which regulate mood. Reduced sensitivity of these receptors to stimulation might explain the positive effects of exercise on anxiety.

It is the perfect time of year, with this beautiful fresh weather, butterflies soaring, greener plants and flowers flourishing to put on your trainers and jump start your body with a good run. Running isn’t just for a quick fix of endorphins but has plenty of great benefits too. As we mentioned, our HerStyleIcon of the month counts this exercise as a favourite. Here are the main reasons to add running to your weekly routine:

circulation, improving the transportation of nutrients around your system and flushing out waste products. This will help make your skin clearer and give you that distinctive runner’s glow.

12. Fat burn By running you are building lean muscle, changing your body composition and your metabolism. Lean muscle weighs heavier than fat, but burns more calories even when you’re resting, so cultivate a regular running habit and you should see a gradual, healthy inch loss.

9.Immune system If you are a runner you will find that you have a stronger immune system, that means you’ll suffer less from minor illnesses such as colds, allergies, fatigue, menstrual discomfort, backache, and digestive disorders.

10. Brain power You can increase your mental functions by going running as it boosts blood flow to the brain and helps it receive oxygen and nutrients, making you more productive at work.

11. Complexion Running stimulates your

If you are looking to enjoy a great musical, London is the place with to be. The Culture of London concerns the arts, music, museums, festivals and other entertainment in London, the capital city of the United Kingdom. London is widely believed to be the culture capital of the world. London is particularly renowned for its theatre quarter, and its West End theatre district has given the name to “West End theatre”, the strand of mainstream professional theatre staged in the large theaters in London. For every musical taste London has something of offer. Our musical tip for this season is “The Bodyguard”, Book is by Alex Dinelaris. Based on the Warner Bros. film of the same name with screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan. Features Whitney Houston’s hit songs. Unlike any other restaurant in Kuwait, this is not an Italian-American restaurant but a true Italian restaurant with their chef, a true Italian national, with incredible experience, having worked with one of the most influential chefs, Jamie Oliver. However, the cherry on top of this incredible treat is that Al Forno is a Kuwaiti founded brand! As the brand starts branching out across the Middle-East and hopefully the rest of the world, it will be a chain to be truly proud of!

This restaurant is full of surprises and my good-ness how we love surprises such as their Festa Della Pasta festival! They always make their pasta fresh on a daily basis; and this ongoing festival gives visitors a chance to watch how it all happens!

With spring here, the weather is perfect to enjoy their stunning outdoor terrace that could seat up to twelve people. It is truly a scene from Tuscany, with wooden details and porcelain ac-cessories imported from Europe. The comfort-able seating, beautiful surrounding colours and fresh air compliment the food brilliantly. The setting, whether indoors or out, goes hand in

hand with their authentic Italian recipes. Italians are known to eat lunch as a family, and the fam-ily feel shows in all aspects of Al Forno, from the portions of the delectable dishes that encourage sharing, to the Italian home decorations, but most of all the service that is so welcoming mak-ing it a place to visit over and over again!

Lionel Shriver Khaled Hosseini

What if you could live again and again, until you got it right?

On a cold and snowy night in

1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war. Darkly comic, startlingly poignant, and utterly original -- this is Kate Atkinson at her absolute best.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how

we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Rachel Kushner’s first novel, Telex from Cuba, was nominated for a National Book

Award and reviewed on the cover of The New York Times Book Review. Her second novel, even more ambitious and brilliant, is the riveting story of a young artist and the worlds she encounters in New York and Rome in the mid-1970s—by turns underground, elite, and dangerous. The Flamethrowers is an intensely engaging exploration of the mystique of the feminine, the fake, the terrorist. At its center is Kushner’s brilliantly realized protagonist, a young woman on the verge. Thrilling and fearless, this is a major American novel from a writer of spectacular talent and imagination.

Isolated by Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of

miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons that pits America’s best ultra-runners against the tribe.

Philipp Meyer, the acclaimed author of American Rust, returns with The Son: an epic of the American West and a multigenerational saga of power, blood, land, and oil that follows the rise of one unforgettable Texas family, from the Comanche raids of the 1800s to the to the oil booms of the 20th century.Harrowing, panoramic, and deeply evocative, The Son is a fully realized masterwork in the greatest tradition of the American canon—an unforgettable novel that combines the narrative prowess of Larry McMurtry with the knife-edge sharpness of Cormac McCarthy.

Wide in scope, ambitious, and populated by complex characters who come together and apart in a changing New York City, The Interestings explores the meaning of talent; the nature of envy; the roles of class, art, money, and power; and how all of it can shift and tilt precipitously over the course of a friendship and a life.

Life After LifeFor Pandora, cooking is a form of love. Alas, her husband, Fletcher, a self-employed high-end cabinetmaker, now spurns the “toxic” dishes that he’d

savored through their courtship, and spends hours each day to manic cycling. Then, when Pandora picks up her older brother Edison at the airport, she doesn’t recognize him. In the years since they’ve seen one another, the once slim, hip New York jazz pianist has gained hundreds of pounds. What happened? After Edison has more than overstayed his welcome, Fletcher delivers his wife an ultimatum: It’s him or me.Rich with Shriver’s distinctive wit and ferocious energy, Big Brother is about fat: an issue both social and excruciatingly personal. It asks just how much sacrifice we’ll make to save single members of our families, and whether it’s ever possible to save loved ones from themselves.
