MUSIC AT ITS BEST- OPERA COMES TO BURWOOD HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

What a very special and memorable treat we had on Friday 2nd November! A few of our talented young musicians performed very professionally by playing the piano, the violin or by singing, and this was indeed a wonderful prelude to listening to Carlos E Barcenas sing solo and then with Ms Iris Ferwerda. How fortunate that Mr Ferwerda was present as he was able to tune the violin for one of our young performers. Mr Ferwerda was a professional cellist before he commenced instrument making in Europe.

It was such an honour to have both Carlos and Ms Ferwerda sing. Both clearly have a passion for singing, a high work ethic and this has helped them to be so successful.

Carlos was recently in the Victorian Opera “William Tell” where he played the role of Arnold Melcthal. His performances in Opera are many and he has earned endless awards recognising his achievements.

Ms Ferwerda will be auditioning for the Victorian Opera and, after hearing her sing, I’m sure you will agree she has a wonderful operatic future ahead of her. The down-side of this , however, is that Ms Ferwerda will not be leading music at Burwood Heights Primary School next year, but she has said she is willing to continue with the school choir and private lessons. How fortunate we are here and I imagine a “spark” has been lit for some to continue and learn the craft of musical performance!

FAREWELL AND THANK YOU – MRS COOPER

It is fast approaching the time of year when we say “Farewell and Thank You” to staff who are leaving us at the end of this year; however, as Mrs Cooper will be leaving before this time, I would like to acknowledge Mrs Cooper’s contribution to Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten over nearly two decades.

Mrs Cooper will be known to most of you. Mrs Cooper’s children spent their primary schooling at this school and during this time Mrs Cooper has contributed much to this organisation, as a parent and as a staff member, having taught across most areas of the school.

We thank you for your dedication, commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism. We are all the benefi-ciaries and richer for your contribution to education. We wish you every happiness for the future. Thank you.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 11TH NOVEMBER

LEST WE FORGET

The Remembrance Day service was conducted by the students last Friday. This ceremony marked the ninety-sixth anniversary of the Armistice. The choir introduced the service by singing “Danny Boy”. Student leaders briefly outlined the significance of this day and how fighting in World War 1 stopped on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

At first this day was called Armistice Day, which means the “Putting down of arms or weapons” but now we know it as Remembrance Day.

The placing of flowers by the students around the flag pole and the playing of “The Last Post” com-pleted the Remembrance Day ceremony.

I thank the students for their leadership of this service.

REMINDER

CURRICULUM DAY - 21ST NOVEMBER

This is a student-free day. TheirCare will be providing a “care” service on this day.

REMINDER - VICTORIAN STATE ELECTION ON SATURDAY 24TH NOVEMBER

The next Victorian State election will be held on Saturday 24th November 2018 to elect the fifty-ninth Parlia-ment of Victoria, including all eighty-eight seats in the Legislative Assembly and forty in the Legislative Coun-cil. Burwood Heights Primary School is the polling booth for the community so it will be a busy day on-site on Election Saturday.

Thank you to all those who are giving their time to assist on the day, with the barbeque and the cake stall. This is greatly appreciated.

REMINDER - PARKING RESTRICTIONS

FOR NEW PARENTS IN PARTICULAR

The provision of school crossings is an important service in providing a safe environment for our students.

To support the school crossing supervisors and to improve pedestrian safety outside our school, a number of park-ing restrictions are in place, including No Stopping areas. The “No Stopping“ areas are in place to improve sight lines for motorists and school crossing supervisors to maximise the crossing’s exposure and safety of pedestrians.

Please be aware that you must park legally at all times. We have been advised that authorised officers will be pa-trolling schools crossings.

The two-minute signs mean two minutes between the following times 8.30am to 9.15 am and 3.15 pm to 4.00pm. Your child should be “dropped off” and you should not need to alight from the car. If you need to enter the school, please do not park in the two-minute parking area.

English in the

Senior School This Term, students in the Senior School have been exploring

Poetry as part of the Reading and Viewing and Writing

curriculum. We have been reading a wide range of

Australian poems and writing some of our own, including,

ballads, free verse, and poetry within songs!

We also had a special visit from Geoff, who engaged the

students in a poetry reading of some of Australia’s most

famous poems and ballads, including, ‘Clancy of the Over-

flow’ and ‘Waltzing Matilda.’

Senior School Fundraising for the United

World Schools Programme

The Senior School’s fundraising events, in partnership with the United World Schools,

are now complete. The students have exceeded all expectations, achieving an out-

standing result!

Because of the highly successful Market Day Stalls, Talent Shows, Discos and Staff

Breakfast, the Senior School students and teachers are very proud to announce that

we raised a grand total of $2139.60, smashing our goal by over $700. What an amaz-

ing achievement!

Without the overwhelming support of the very generous students, families and staff at

Burwood Heights Primary School, this result would not have been possible!

On Friday 9th November Mrs Volz and Mrs Flowers took a group of ten Grade Four stu-dents on an adventure to Circus Oz. They entered the magical world of circus arts and learnt about the topsy turvy life of a circus performer.

The first step in our adventure was to catch public transport into the city. Students re-searched bus, train and tram schedules prior to the adventure and used this knowledge to navigate their way to our destination.

Upon arrival we were ushered into the magnificent Melba Spiegeltent and seated ready for the ‘SKILLS’ performance. After a quick intro-duction to the performers the show began. We were captivated by seemingly impossible feats of strength, flexibility, balance and team-work. Cheers, laughs and gasps filled the arena as the performers left us in awe with their jaw dropping performance.

In the afternoon we participated in a workshop that allowed us to ex-plore how to use our bodies to express ourselves, communicate to others and create amazing towers. One thing we did was mirror work with partners, which taught us to move slowly and watch each other carefully. We also spent time building human pyramids, which in-volved using clear communication and trust.

Before heading back to school we all stopped at the park to show off our new circus skills on the play equipment.

Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed clowning around with each other.

REMINDER

IMPORTANT INFORMATION– LICE

Head lice are extremely contagious. Early treatment is recommended to kill head lice and their eggs and to limit school and family contamination.

98% of lice are transmitted through close head to head contact and by sharing objects such as hats, hair brushes, head bands, towels and pillows.

Please ensure your household is protected from head lice this season by taking the necessary preventative steps to keep head lice away.

There are four crucial steps to keep our school head lice free:

Avoid sharing clothing, especially hats, ribbons, head bands and helmets

Discourage your child from playing with another’s hair

Don’t share brushes, combs, towels and pillows

Keep long hair plaited or firmly tied back to prevent contact from other students.

Please help us to keep our school “lice-free”.

Incentive for Early Payment

Be in the draw for the refund of one student’s fees, by paying before 4.00pm Thursday, 6th

November. The draw will take place on Friday 8th December, at assembly.

Congratulations to Charli Seymour for her achievement in

Speed Skating. She has been selected in the Victorian Speed

Skating Team to compete at the Nationals in Brisbane,

January 2019.

We wish her all the very best.
