Even before I called myself
a Parrot Head I was a Parrot
Head Even before I knew
what a Parrot Head was I was
a Parrot Head And even be-
fore the term was coined I
was one Youll understand
better in a moment after read-
ing what I have to share But I
still always enjoy hearing peo-
ples personal stories of how
they became Parrot Heads
As for myself I prefer to think
of it as how I realized I was a
Parrot head
As far back as I can possi-
bly remember Ive had an
affinity towards the sea Plus
Ive always been a restless
soul Im also among other
qualities in line with the Mar-
garitaville state of mind a bit
of a non-conformist Eventu-
ally my (then still young) no-
mad feet and free-spirit atti-
tude got the better of me and
I joined the Navy leaving Bur-
lington to be with my first love
Mother Ocean All of that plus
an inevitable love for Jimmy
Buffetts music finally rose up
as one smacked me in the
head and said Hey Youre a
Parrot Head
Thats the short version
and if I ever get around to
writing the big book you can
read the full story But for now
Id like to share something that
perhaps some of you have
read before Surely some have
not (Yeah I knowdont call
you Shirley) I dont know who
the author is so I cant credit
them by name but to the best
of my knowledge it was writ-
ten by someone from a south-
ern California PHC Enjoy and
fins up
We are not Parrot Heads be-
cause we are Jimmy Buffett
fans We are Parrot Heads
because We love the ocean
We love our planet We love to
have fun
We are Parrot Heads because
We are not afraid to be silly
We are not afraid to act fool-
ish We are not afraid of love
We are Parrot Heads because We
like scantily clad members of our
favorite sex We like playing in the
sun with those same members
We like singing songs that say all
of these things
We are Parrot Heads because We
believe the best things in life can-
not be bought We believe sharing
the best things make them better
We believe in the innate goodness
in all of us
We are Parrot Heads because We
know shared joy is increased We
know shared pain is lessened We
know a good friend has value be-
yond measure
It just so happens that Jimmy Buf-
fett sings about all these things
So we are not Parrot Heads be-
cause we are Jimmy Buffett fans
we are Jimmy Buffett fans be-
cause we are Parrot Heads

A message from El Presidentersquo
Ahoy Parrot Heads I am happy to
report that the club held a success-
ful phlocking at Diamond Daves in
January Thanks to PH John Diaz
for being a gracious host and
thanks to everyone on the Execu-
tive Committee who worked hard to
make this event possible I am
happy to report that we added
approx 10 new members at this
event
We have a lot of momentum to start
2011 We have a strong slate of
events to look forward to in 2011 It
all starts at our next phlocking in
West Point on March 19th and runs
up to and beyond our 2011 signa-
ture fundraising event The Summer
Sand Blast to be held on August
20th at The Paddlewheel Lounges
new outdoor bar and gathering
area
In the mean time I would challenge
each of you to bring a potential
member to the next phlocking as
we really need to focus on swell-
ing our ranks at this tender point
in our clubs existence
As Jimmy sayswrinkles only go
where the smiles have been so
lets all agree to smile a lot this
year

Juvenile Diabetes Re-
search Foundation
The Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation International (JDRF) is
the leading charitable funder and
advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabe-
tes research worldwide The mis-
sion of JDRF is to find a cure for
diabetes and its complications
through the support of research
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune
disease that strikes children and
adults suddenly and can be fatal
Until a cure is found people with
type 1 diabetes have to test their
blood sugar and give themselves
multiple insulin injections or use a
pump mdash every day of their lives
And even with that intensive care
insulin is not a cure for diabetes
nor does it prevent its eventual and
devastating complications which
may include kidney failure blind-
ness heart disease stroke and
amputation
Since its founding in 1970 by
parents of children with type 1
diabetes JDRF has awarded more
than $15 billion to diabetes re-
search including more than $107
million in FY2010
