A consultation process involving all relevant stakeholders will be organized as a World Café on the Future of Venice and its Lagoon. This participatory approach will identify concrete actions to be included in the management plan under preparation.

The World Café process is a simple yet innovative methodology essential for establishing and exchanging information for discussions. The stakeholders “converse” amongst themselves and “…between groups, cross-pollinate ideas, and discover new insights into the questions or issues that are most important to the issue.” READ MORE...

WEB-BASED KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM ON VENICE & ITS LAGOON

Workspaces will be created so to allow users to interact on the main issues of the WH Management Plan so to elaborate concrete proposals for action.

A web-based GIS system for the sharing of knowledge/data/maps has been relaunched. It is an interactive tool that will facilitate the consensus building of this WH site.

Its interface has been re-designed. New functionalities for its management and consultation have been incorporated. Thanks to the use of web map services (WMS) and web feature service (WFS), diffused databases and information systems on Venice and its Lagoon, are easily accessible. The GIS System is a platform for an open network of data owners and users.

Venice Lagoon Model to be adapted in the SEE RegionReferring to the extensive network of the WH sites in the SEE Region that are also coastal cities (Venice, Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor, Butrint, Ohrid, Corfù), the Venice Office is planning to convene a special workshop dedicated to the common challenges (sea level rising and the protection of historical cities, growth of tourism flows, rapid urbanization processes, etc.) these sites are facing. By identifying innovative ways to address shared problems the elaboration of a WH site Management Plan to be implemented. This specific activity would also contribute to a regional initiative on “risk preparedness” related to the impacts of climate change.

Workshop on Land Use Planning & Management for Venice & its LagoonSeveral planning exercises are being developed on Venice and its Lagoon by relevant authorities (Veneto Region, Venice Province, Municipality of Venice and the Venice Water Authority - Magistrato alle Acque), dealing with matters of landscape, lagoon morphology, islands and transportation. Additional proposals will be analyzed so to elaborate specific to be included in the WH site management plan.

The “Venice in Peril” Private Committee for the Safeguarding of Venice organized an international discussion meeting oriented towards an integrated assessment of the City and its Lagoon’s deteriorating physical and ecological integrity.

The discussions took place on 21 May 2010 at the UNESCO Venice Office.

A position paper highlighting the interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and

policy options will be drafted. A final version will be presented to a broad range of policy makers, opinion leaders and stakeholders in autumn 2010. In collaboration with the University of Cambridge, studies related to the Lagoon’s morphology and hydrodynamics, trends in land subsidence and sea level rising, and the forms of degradation of the urban fabric associated with human activities, was co-published. Under the auspices of UNESCO and with the support of the joint programme on “Enhancing Inter-ethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration” supported by the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Spanish Achievement Fund, the Community Development Institute (CDI) from Tetovo organized the national youth conference on “SHARED VISIONS” in Skopje from 15 to 16 May 2010.

The National Youth Conference gave the opportunity for young people between 16-24 years old from different parts of The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to talk openly and without any prejudice about ethnicity and religion. By getting together, learning, working, socializing and having fun, they will have an opportunity to overcome the barriers that exist among young people and to start to feel the positive aspects of the possibility to live in a country rich in diversity

like theirs.

The Joint Programme on “Enhancing Inter-Ethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration”, funded by the Spanish Government through the MDG Achievement Fund, is being implemented by the Secretariat for Implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement; the Ministries of Education and Science, Culture, and Local Self-Government; ZELS; the municipalities of Struga, Kicevo and Kumanovo; varied members of civil society; and supported by UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM IN ALBANIA RECOMMENDATIONS AND PROPOSED NEXT STEPS BY THE ADVISORY BOARD

Transforming the National History Museum in Tirana into a modern institution is the flagship activity of the MDG-F Joint Programme on `Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development` which is being implemented jointly with UNDP under the leadership of UNESCO in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of Albania.

The programme intends to establish a new governance and management structure for the Museum as well as to upgrade the presentation, conservation and security level of the objects and artefacts in its trust. Education and communication with the public will constitute one of the new dimensions in the new governance and management structure that will be eventually introduced in the National History Museum in Tirana.

T H E P E T P A L SR AISE AWARENESS ABOUT WATER ISSUES

DIVA A vain and impulsive duckling, with

a passion for fashion! An estimated 884 million people worldwide do not have access to safe water. Almost 1.5 million children die every year from water-borne diseases. Population growth and increasing urbanization, chemical pollution and invasive species are the main factors contributing to the deterioration of water quality. The consequences for the environment and for mankind are considerable.

In the frame of H2Ooooh! Water project, Gruppo Alcuni in collaboration with UNESCO and RAI Fiction has developed the 3-D animated television series “PetPals present H2Ooooh!” with the 6 Pet Pals as protagonists focusing on the issue of water protection.

The realization of the 3-D animated TV series “The Pet Pals present H2Ooooh!” saw the active involvement of 6,000 students ages 6 to 16 from 280 Italian schools to realize short stories and storyboards on the water

subject. 26 storyboards were selected, each becoming a 60-second short animated film.

The episodes are broadcast on Italian TV channel RAI Due from 24 May-28 June 2010.

“Water should be freely accessible. Water is an essential element necessary for survival. But a large portion of our Earth’s water is unsuitable for human consumption. Therefore, water becomes a privileged commodity.” E. Ruoss

SCIENCE IS TRANSFORMED INTO FUN AND CAN BE TAUGHT BY CHILDREN

“PetPals present H2Ooooh!” deals with some very topical themes connected to water, encouraging youngsters to actively give their creative contribution to such issues and enabling them to share their

own experience and their proposals for the protection of the environment.

The animated storyboards are an important creative contribution to science education where children around the world can share in a new and fun way their experiences and proposals towards the protection of the environment.
