I congratulate our 2020 School Councillors once again and eagerly look forward to a very progressive year, where we work together to ensure all students have the best learning and teaching environment possible at Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten.

NOVEL CORONVIRUS UPDATE

Further to my community advice on Monday 27th January regarding the spread of Novel Coronavirus I write to inform that, families must now adhere to the updated recommendations of the Victorian Government, which can be accessed via https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/department/Pages/coronavirus.aspx.

I take this opportunity to remind the community that everyone can protect themselves against infections by practising good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Here are some tips that everyone at our school and kindergarten should follow:

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue, or cough into your elbow.

Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards.

Wash your hands regularly, after using the toilet, and before eating.

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSION FUND (CSEF)

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: • $125 for primary school students • $225 for secondary school students HOW TO APPLY New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef If you applied for the CSEF at your child's school in 2019, you do not need to complete an application form in 2020 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred: · new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools in 2020 or you did not apply in 2019. · changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2020. Check with the school office if you are unsure.

SCHOOL’S PRIVACY POLICY

The Department of Education and Training values the privacy of every person and is committed to protecting information that schools collect. All staff, including contractors, service providers and volunteers of the Department and our school must comply with Victorian privacy law and this policy.

In Victorian Government schools the management of personal information and health information is governed by the Privacy and Data Protection Act 20154 (Vic) and Health records (Act 2001 (Vic) – collectively Victorian Privacy Law. Our Privacy Policy is reviewed regularly to take account of new laws and technology and the changing school environment when required. Please read the School’s Privacy Policy.

This Friday parents of Junior, Middle and Senior school will receive forms to complete. Please ensure information on the form is correct. Please return signed forms to the school office, even if no changes are necessary.

Over the next few weeks all families will be receiving a letter to join ClassDojo. This is a school communication platform that allows teachers to share classroom moments, special events and reminders. We will be using it as a one-way communication tool. Please phone the school office, email the school or send a message via Flexibuzz if you wish to communicate with the teachers.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) – PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)

Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten is currently on a journey towards becoming an authorised IB PYP World School. We have organised an information evening for Thursday, 12th March, 6.30pm in the Library, where the programme will be explained in detail and any questions you have will be answered.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Clare Matthews

IB PYP Co-ordinator

HOW DO WE KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE WHEN USING THE INTERNET?

The impact of the internet on education is not straightforward. There is little argument that the internet is a valuable tool for students, providing easy access to a wide range of materials for homework and research. It serves as a teacher to students from where you can ask anything and it will answer you, as well as it can be used to quickly gain information and knowledge on almost everything. The internet is important be-cause it gives access to both students and educators to vast educational resources. It provides students of any age with the ability to collaborate with others and answer questions they cannot answer on their own. As with any tool there are some inherent risks to students using the internet. I offer the following information with the intent of raising awareness of some strategies that can be used by us all to counter these risks. The Department has clear guidelines on Acceptable Use for staff, students and parents, with a written agreement between students, parents and the school to abide by the conditions in the agreement, which we ask all parents to sign. We are doing everything possible to ensure our students are not exposed to in appropriate material online Given the recent publicity about detection and cyber-predators, we all have a part to play in keeping our students safe. At home, parents can take the following steps to ensure their children’s online experiences are safe and pleasant: 1. Remind your child that people online may not be who they say they are.

2. Remind children that identifying information also includes school, year group, hair colour, suburb, sporting team and picture. Children need to be aware that any information they post on the Internet is public and difficult to remove.

3. It is helpful to keep the computer in a public area at home, so you can keep an eye on what’s going on.

4. Reinforce safety messages and continue to remind children of the need to protect their privacy.

5. Encourage them to log out of a chat session if it becomes unpleasant or uncomfortable, and to speak with a parent or trusted adult when these issues arise.

6. Specifically, they should not give out personal information such as name, address, telephone number (including mobile phones), and should check profiles to ensure the information there doesn’t identify them.

Report inappropriate behaviour or material; e.g. call the police, contact your Internet or chat room provider, or contact the Virtual Global Task Force (http://www.virtualglobaltaskforce.com/reprt_abuse.html)

To report inappropriate behaviour or material you can call Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

WHAT’S ON IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS?

WELCOME BARBEQUES

Unfortunately the Prep Barbeque was cancelled due to inclement weather on Monday 3rd February. The Prep Barbeque has been rescheduled to Thursday 13th February.

The Junior School barbeque was held on Monday 10th February and it was lovely to see so many families enjoying the evening with other parents and their children.

Future Barbeques are:

Middle School - Monday 17th February

Senior School - Monday 24th February

Kindergarten - Monday 2nd March

HOUSE ATHLETICS

The House Athletics (Field and track events) will be held on Wednesday 26th February, at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track, Burwood. Middle and Senior School students will represent their particular House in the athletics competition.

Parents are most welcome to attend and join in the fun. The parent/teacher/student relay is always highlight!

TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Walking or cycling to school is a great way to get a healthy start to the day. It can also be a good opportunity to teach your child about traffic safety. It is important that you discuss the route used to get to and from school and that this advice is followed if your child is not walking or riding with you:

*Only walk/ride the route discussed with you

*Go directly to the destination

*Walk/ride with a sibling, friend or someone else from school, if possible

If students are attending sport or dance practice or any other function after school, they should be picked up by parents or a letter written to the supervising teacher if other arrangements are made.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL It is crucial that all medications are handed to the office staff. Medical Authority forms must be completed. Any medication that needs to be given at school, must be in its original container with your child’s name on it. Please do NOT give it to your child to carry to school or place in your child’s bag. It is extremely dangerous if the medication falls out of their pocket or bag and is picked up by another child in the playground . The only exception is Ventolin and some types of cream. Students are permitted to carry Ventolin so they can administer it without delay.

French Song

Sing-Along Dear Families and Friends of Burwood Heights Primary School,

With each publication of the newsletter, I will be including a song that the students

have either sung-along to, or heard in class.

I will include the French lyrics, and the English translation, to help you follow the

song, and make connections between the French and English languages.

Please let me know if there is a particular song you would like included in the

newsletters, and I will do that for you. I’m taking requests!

I hope you enjoy singing the songs with your children.

Kind regards,

Lauren May
