LEGAL CORNER Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

Whats in a name?Con Murphy is setting up a new business and wants to get a fresh catchy different name for his new food business. He wants to go as James Kirk said on the starship enterprise “where no man has gone before”. He was thinking of Stellargourmet as he is a bit of a “trekkie” but is not sure if it has been used already.

Getting a name for a new business is as challenging as heading for Jupiter. Once the name is chosen branding and marketing materials, email addresses, domain names, headed notepaper logos and the look of the business will all hinge on the name. Moreover once the business is started and does well goodwill is accumulating hopefully to the name and it can be a valuable commodity. This all makes it more difficult to change a business name down the line. A good name that achieves household recognition and sticks with people can work miracles for a business and is a valuable commodity worth protecting. E.g. Coca-cola, Dyson, Hoover, McCombridges, The first port of call when choosing a name is to check the business names register at www.cro.ie. This shows what other business names are out there as it is important to get one that is different. Once Con has checked that nobody has the name either on the business or trademarks register (this can be checked at www.patentsoffice.ie) he can then register the business name and use that registration to go on and register a domain name for the business. All businesses in Ireland using a name that is not their own have to register that new business name to establish a trail of identity back to the true owner. If Con Murphy were to use his own name for the business there would be no need to register a business name but he might still consider registering a trademark as Con Murphy in a certain font shape with graphic imagery and logos. Registering the business name is not cast iron protection for the new business name. It is only evidence of identity of the business. Hence it is important to register a trademark, e.g.. Stellargourmet in the food category, which would ideally have Con’s name, and logo, which gives greater protection. This can be done through www.patentsoffice.ie

Lawbizquip:It takes a big person to admit when “I am wrong”, and even say “Sorry” and an even bigger person on a grand scale to keep quiet when they are right with no “I told you so”

Men’s hairstyle trends for 2016... so far

The year is nowhere near over and already there has been an overwhelming range of styles and fashion out there for men.

• Wavy/high volume undercut with a taperThis variation of the undercut features a fade and a taper followed by much longer hair on top (longer than a classic undercut for sure) giving it a wavy and volumized look. To properly achieve this look you will need to get comfortable with a hairdryer, brush and your favourite matte pomade ie Layrite cement.

• Buzzed skin fadesWe will definitely see more close shaved hairstyles this summer. In 2015 the scene was filled with longer hair trends like the man bun and top knot, but it is currently going back to more contemporary buzzed (shaved) styles like fades and high and tights.

• Tidy but longThis look is brilliant for any man who likes to leave his hair quite long. The top and sides are left grown out as much as you’d like whilst maintaining the nape and around the ears with regular trimmings.

• Modern side partThe side part (comb over) is still one of the most popular haircuts. It is a sleek style and a timeless look. To have an aesthetically pleasing side-part keep the top long and the sides short. Some men choose to have a parting shaved in the natural parting and some have it lower for a funkier look.

• The swoopWe got a taste of this hairstyle when Justin Bieber showcased a more out there version of the cut recently. It is basically an exaggerated undercut in which the top is extremely long and swooped to either the left or right of the head.

JOHN BRASSIL T.D. SUGGESTS TACKLING THE HOUSING CRISES BY “ INCENTIVES FOR LANDLORDS” Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry John Brassil has said that the Government must incentivise landlords and property owners to refurbish idle properties. Deputy Brassil was one of 16 TD’s at this weeks Dáil committee meeting on homelessness and the housing crises which is looking at proposals and ideas to alleviate the growing problem. Deputy Brassil said he “came across a substantial quantity of vacant properties that were in a good state of structural repair but require some refurbishment to become habitable.“If the Government want to tackle the housing crises, they need to look at all propos-als and my suggestion would be the provision of grant aid assistance to landlords to encourage them to refurbish properties to a decent living standard and in turn they must commit the property for renting to the long term lease scheme or RAS.” “The idea should at least be considered, the social housing demand in Kerry is inten-sifying as more and more families are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable accommodation, with over 5000 on the Social Housing waiting list in Kerry alone, the subject of housing has become a defining issue for Government. We need practical solutions that can be implemented without delay before the situation deteriorates further. It would also bolster the construction industry and the possibility of new jobs which is always a very welcome consequence.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...TRUTH, LIES AND COTTAGE CHEESE THIGHS!!Cellulite – 5 facts you need to know!

1. Cellulite is just excess fat.. NO! Regardless of your size we all have a layer of fat between our muscles and surface skin connected by tissue to keep this fat under control. Sometimes due to age, lifestyle, excess toxins and indeed weight gain this connective tissue weakens and these irregular fat cells protrude through the skin causing the skin to pucker resulting in what we commonly call cellulite!

2. Weight loss can cure cellulite – not necessarily! As cellulite generally results from damaged connective tissue rather than fat, weight loss alone will not reduce the appearance of the cellulite. However strength training such as squats and lunges can help to rebuild the muscle tone therefore reducing the appearance of this pesky condition

3. Only older people get cellulite – not the case Unfortunately cellulite affects people of all ages however it can appear worse as you get older due to the loss of skins elasticity

4. Is there any proven solution to this unsightly condition – YES! Endermologie – the only FDA approved treatment for the per-manent management of cellulite! It works by draining excess water and releasing localised fat, re-sculpting and contouring the affected area. Approximately 8 treatments is recommended to achieve desired results with a top treatment recommended to maintain your new smoother skin long term

5. Do homecare treatments work – not alone While cellulite creams can help to recondition the skin, used alone they are not very effective. Dry body brushing along with a stimulating body cream regularly can prove an excellent homecare routine in conjunc-tion with the salon based Endermologie treatment.

ANOTHER FANTASTIC WEEKEND AT THE TASTE OF TRALEE FOOD FAIR IN MANOR WESTThe Taste of Tralee Food Fair returned for another extremely successful weekend to Manor West on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of April. The event organized in conjunction with Taste Kerry which showcases the massive amount of talent and creativity of local producers have gone down a treat with shoppers to the shopping centre and this weekend proved no different with many traders stating that this weekend was their most profitable Food Fair ever in Manor West. On the busy mall, the local artisan producers had the opportunity to engage with a wider audience and promote their top quality goods. With a wide variety of quality locally produced goods to choose from, visitors to the shopping centre were spoiled for choice with an array of tasty treats to sample and purchase.

Tempting delights from Crepes de la Creme and Cupcakes by Dee, fresh breads from O’Donnells bakery to compliment the award winning products from Sásta Sausages proved as popular as ever. Due to the fantastic wide range of food stalls that attend our food fair, shoppers are able to taste new foods and products. Dingle Sushi and Carlo’s Paella were a big hit with shoppers as they enjoyed a bite to eat while out and about. Of course, it would not be a Food Fair weekend in Manor West without our pals from Kingdom Party Pals to keep the little ones happy, kids’ favorite cartoon characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as Anna, Elsa and Olaf from Frozen were on hand all weekend to keep the kids well entertained which created a fantastic family feel about the whole weekend here at Manor West.

Centre Manager Derek Rusk said: “We’ve had another fantastic weekend here in Manor West for both the producers and customers alike. There is always a great atmosphere around the shopping centre during the Food Fair weekends and we are delighted to be a part of it. Sometimes we do not realize the talent of our local producers and this event gives many a chance to become aware of these local food businesses and to support our local food producers. We are delighted that we can give these producers the opportunity to interact with a wider pool of customers.” Manor West are looking forward to the next Taste of Tralee Food Fair which will take place on the June Bank Holiday weekend. For more information on all upcoming events and news check out manorwest.ie or follow us on facebook.

Ian Jackson, Managing Director of the CAP Awards, said: “We were hugely impressed by the real understanding staff had of their different roles and why what they were doing was so important to the patients and the hospital medical teams.”The CAP Awards (the Continuous Advancement Programme) measure the quality of cleaning and housekeeping in healthcare facilities across Ireland and the UK and are regarded by patients and their families as a mark of high quality.

The catering service also received praise from the CAP Award Programme. The soup of the day “apple and celery” was described as being simply delicious and the plaice was beautifully cooked. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CARER’S SUPPORT GRANTQuestionWhat are the changes to the grant for respite care this year? How do I apply for the grant?

Answer The name of the Respite Care Grant was changed in 2016 and it is now called the Carer’s Support Grant. The grant is an annual payment made to carers by the Department of Social Protection. Carers can use the grant in whatever way they wish. You can use the grant to pay for respite care if you wish, but you do not have to do so. In 2016 the grant will be €1,700 (increased from €1,300).

You do not qualify if you are working more than 15 hours a week outside the home, if you are taking part in an education or training course for more than 15 hours a week, if you are getting a jobseeker’s payment or if you are signing on for jobseeker credits. You also do not qualify if you are living in a hospital, convalescent home or similar institution. If you are caring for more than one person, a grant is paid for each of them. In June of each year (usually on the first Thursday of the month), the Department of Social Protection pays the grant automatically to carers getting Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance or Prescribed Relative’s Allowance. If you are not getting one of these payments and you did not get the grant last year, you should fill in an application form. You can apply for this year’s grant from 7 April 2016 (8 weeks before the grant is payable). If you got the grant last year you do not need to reapply. You will get a letter at the end of April from the Carer’s Support Grant section in the Department of Social Protection with a short questionnaire. You must answer the questions on the back and return the letter to the Carer’s Support Grant section. A freepost envelope will be included with your letter. After you return the letter, the Department will use this and the information on file to reassess you for the Carer’s Support Grant. You can apply for a Carer’s Support Grant for any given year until 31 December of the following year. So, for example, you can apply for a grant for 2015 up until 31 December 2016.

NEW COMPOST GARDENS IN TRALEE TOWN PARK Local Agenda 21 Environment Partnership Fund

Tralee Community Garden / Tralee Community Orchard public participants have completed the new Keyhole Compost Garden located at the facility in Tralee Town Park. This addition to the project enables the public to use and observe a working model of best practice in positive waste management within the envi-rons. Keyhole Compost Gardens are a cost effect labour saving and practical way to use your household fruit / vegetable and garden waste in a visually pleasing way and can be adapted to suit any situation. This type of garden uses compost directly as a central core to nourish and enrich surrounding soil to enable planting directly in the area where compost is being produced. These gardens were developed through extensive research in third World countries to minimise labour, maximise water con-servation, and improve growing possibilities of food producing plants particularly using waste products. Materials used in con-struction can be drawn for any number of sources to use what is available to your area all using the same basic principals. This new development was supported by the Local Agenda En-vironment Partnership Program through Kerry County Council.Tralee Community Garden Project, which encompasses Tralee Community Orchard, is the only Public Participation Integration Project through gardening and related topics in the country. The project is opened 365 days a year and has public participa-tion sessions on Saturdays 10.30 am – 12.30 pm and Mondays 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm. Tralee Community Garden Project is a not for profit Community and Voluntary Initiative open to Indige-nous, Foreign, Local, National, International, Resident or Tran-sient Peoples and seeks to gently enthuse People about Food Production and Sustainability for themselves and their own Communities in practical ways. The project is based in Tralee Town Park in what was a derelict site and caters for thousands of volunteers, participants and visitors each year. There are no taxes or fees for participation so now that it looks like we may be leaving the winter behind why not come along and have a look and maybe even get involved!

Bexblah BeautyThis page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends! Although our weather is a tad bit bi-polar at the moment, the bouts of sun that we do get is really getting me excited for summer!

So here are my top tips to get Summer Ready!

So that’s it Ladies, I hope you all enjoyed this little piece. It was highly requested and I got sooooo many questions on Facebook! If you do order the extensions, I’d love if you could let me know via Facebook or email [email protected] .

Stay Gorge,

Bexblah.

1ALL WHITE EVERYTHINGThere’s something about white clothing and accessories that

makes me feel all summery. Maybe it’s because my wardrobe is black 95% of the year, maybe it’s because white makes your tan look so much better, who knows? Either way wearing something white will get you summer ready in no time.

2GET YOUR PINS OUTNothing says ‘Summer here I come’ than smooth

shiny legs. Winter is over Ladies, time to book that waxing appointment or make your razor your best friend again. Along with hair free legs come smooth ones so don’t forget to moisturise and even add some shimmer. I am absolutely loving the Clarins Shimmer Body Oil to add that extra sheen to my legs!

3GET TANNINGNO I do not mean the sunbeds. I’m all about that fake tan life, no skin damage

for me thank you very much! Personally having a tan makes me feel better and summery, each to their own obviously. But if you’re into it, get the exfoliator, tanning mitt, moisturiser and favourite fake tan of choice ready to have a flawless harmless summer glow!

4GET YOUR PEDI ONNo one likes dry un groomed

feet in sandals. Time to prep your feet for summer Ladies! Exfoliate and moisturise to ensure they’re soft and beach ready. I love the Soap & Glory Heel Genius, it’s fantastic and leaves my feet so moisturised. When you’ve the feet taken care of, get your fave nail varnish out and paint your toe nails, or even treat yourself and get a Pedicure!

Bexblah Fitness!HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, HOPE YOU’RE ALL

HAVING A GREAT WEEK! THIS WEEK I’LL BE TALKING ALL ABOUT GOALS.

Ok so last weekend I turned 22, and I am at the lowest weight I have been since around this time last year, when I did a 12 week plan to lose weight and body fat. I’m nowhere near where I want to be but that’s ok, no quick fixes here!

I had a goal and I worked my butt off the past few weeks, I did the same last year but after my 21st I didn’t stay on track.

This year I’m determined to not let that happen!!I have started weighing myself every day to stay accountable, I was up 4 pounds Monday after an entire weekend of partying and eating out for my birthday. I know that a lot of that weight is dehydration and excess water weight. I didn’t get disheartened, I just focused on what my next goal is.I weighed myself this morning and I’m down a pound today already then I got my ass to the gym to do leg day. I am going to the gym 5/6 days a week and drinking lots of water and green tea.

This time last year is when I messed up, I stuck to my 12 week plan until my 21st, but then made no plan or goal after my 21st. I let celebrations, the prospect of summer, bbqs, nights out and more get the better of my goals. That was a mistake, and I have learned from it. It would be very easy now to just relax with going to the gym and not weigh myself and not track my foods, but why take the easy way out? I know myself what I want to achieve and I proved to myself in the last few weeks that when I put my mind to something, nothing can get in my way. It’s all well and good to have a big goal set, but sometimes getting to that big goal can take a lot of time and you can get unmotivated. So what I recommend doing is setting little goals in between the big ones. My first little goal is 4 weeks, between now and the 1st of June, I want to keep losing weight and body fat, get stronger in the gym, and feel awesome overall. After that small goal is achieved I have 2 other small goals set, one is my friends 21st in July and the next is The Rose Of Tralee Festival. By having smaller goals it makes the big ones more achievable!

So go set some goals for yourself, and stay positive! Nothing happens overnight, but that’s okay!

It’s all about balance & staying positive peeps! Here’s to being 22

Chef NoelLet me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating

With the lovely weather and hopefully plenty more to come, some BBQ grills were out over the weekend so here are my top tips for your BBQ Remember all the recipes tips and much more is on the blog

www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com

HEALTHY RECIPES Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

LIGHT THE BARBECUE BEFORE THE GUESTS ARRIVEEven have some grilling under way - maybe just a few bites. At the very least, your guests will arrive to the tantalising smell of the debris burning off the barbecue grills.

BE EN PLACEThe chef’s term for having everything in place ready to go. Get marinating the day before and prepare everything to as advanced a state as you can. This will leave you with less washing-up and more time to set up drinks and create the party atmosphere on the day.

BE ORGANISED AROUND YOUR BARBECUEHave enough work surface. Work out how many grill-loads of food you have to cook. What other equipment will you need? How will you keep raw meat separate from cooked?

STAY WITH YOUR BARBECUEStay for as long as you are grilling, for the best results and for safety’s sake. You won’t get lonely. Chefs never do. There are always a handful of - invariably male - guests who huddle around giving their chefs advice. Barbecuing is theatre.

USE GREAT BASIC INGREDIENTSThe summer months, when most barbecue bones are tickled, coincide perfectly with the season of fruit and vegetable gluts, leaving you spoilt for great ingredients both to barbecue (sweet corn, courgettes, plums, apples, etc) and to throw together into great salads to accompany your grilled meats, birds and fish. You should always wash vegetables before use, particularly if you aren’t peeling them.

SEASONSeasoning is often neglected. This is one of the first lessons any chef learns. Only add salt to a marinade if you are marinating for no more than 2 hours. Pepper is fine overnight, but salt never. Always season with salt just before barbecuing and don’t be afraid to season well. Flaked sea salt, such as Maldon, will just fall off through the barbecue grill. Either blitz Maldon in your spice grinder, or use fine sea salt.

LOSE FRIDGE CHILLAlways give enough time out of the fridge, at least 20

minutes, for raw barbecue dishes to lose their chill and to be approaching room temperature. If the meat, chicken, fish or vegetable is too cold in the centre, the outside may well burn before the inside is cooked.

Temperature control during grillingControl the proximity of the food to the coals. If you can, use a rack system with three different heights and moveable grills and hinged sandwich racks. If not, shuffle your grilling food around from hot patches to cooler parts of the rack, or place the food on foil to slow things down.

TEST FOR ‘DONENESS’Using a small sharp knife, cut into the centre of the meat (down to the bone if there is one), to check that the flesh is cooked and juices are running clear. For flaky fish, such as salmon, press the flesh with your finger or a fork to check that the flakes come apart, indicating that it is ready. REST THE MEATResting meats after barbecuing is as essential a part of the barbecuing process as any other. If you were to eat a steak directly off the barbecue, it would be tough and juices would flow out the moment you prodded it with your steak knife. Leaving it to rest for a few minutes allows the meat sinews to reabsorb the juices. Rest the meat on a warmed tray on the top rack or away from the direct heat covered with perforated foil.

MAGNIFICENT MARINATINGIf you have a fantastic piece of well-hung organic beef from a farm down the road, then maybe just brush it lightly with a little oil, season it with some sea salt and freshly ground black pepper and barbecue it over the coals as is, serving it with any of our sauces. Other-wise, if you have just bought a piece of meat, some chicken, fish or vegetables from the shop, marinating is essential.

Marinades don’t only flavour meat, but they also ten-derise. Overnight marinating gives the best flavour but some more delicate fish and shellfish will not benefit and never use salt, or lemon and lime juices in a marinade for longer than two hours. Avoid pineapple juice, as it is very destructive, breaking down meat and fish fibres totally. Don’t hesitate to bring out any flavour more strongly by adding an extra teaspoon or so of a seasoning. If you don’t have some of the ingredients, check your shelves and fridge to see what you might use as a substitute. This is how great recipes are created.Five top tips for marinatingMarinate overnight whenever possible for maximum flavour (unless stated otherwise in the recipe).Extra virgin olive oil is great, but you should never use it in marinades. It burns and smokes on contact with the barbecue. Use light olive oil, or vegetable oil instead and save the extra virgin bottles for your salads and sauces.Marinate in strong plastic bags, tied securely to pre-vent leakage when you turn them. Otherwise, always cover food tightly with clingfilm and use non-reactive containers such as glass, or stainless steel. Before placing on the barbecue grill, rub or shake off any excess marinade, particularly if there is any oil in it, to prevent burning or flaring and the consequent smoky bitter flavour.

Never put cooked meat back onto the same dish you used for marinating. Always use a clean serving dish or plate.

GAELSCOIL HONOURED WITH VISIT FROM PRESIDENT MICHAEL D HIGGINS.After weeks of preparation, the pupils and staff of Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn were delighted to welcome President Michael D Higgins to their school on Thursday 21st April at 10.30am. The President visited the school in honour of its links to Roger Casement, whom the school was named after, when it was founded in 1978 by the Tralee branch of Conradh na Gaeilge. .

On arrival, the President and his wife Sabina received a guard of honour from 5 children from each class . The school’s musicians performed the Presidential salute beautifully to welcome our President to the first Gaelscoil founded outside the Dublin area nearly 40 years ago. He was then warmly greeted in the school hall by the pupils and staff. The school Principal, Cáit Uí Chon-chúir extended a Céad Míle Fáilte to Uachtarán Ó hUigínn agus a bhean Saibhín to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, and spoke of how proud and honoured the entire school community were that the President had chosen to visit the town’s only Gaelscoil, on this historic day during his trip to Kerry. Proceedings continued with 5th class pupils, Aoife Ní Ruairc agus Jane Akinrinlade, addressing the President, giving a brief history of the school’s links to the Irish Patriot and international Humanitarianist that is Roger Casement. The school choir then performed the Lonely Banna Strand, Trá Uaigneach na Beannaí, as Gaeilge, while a group of 8 pupils enacted the song to depict Sir Roger’s ill fated trip to Banna Strand. The President was invited to the podium where he spoke of the legacy of Roger Casement and the men and women of the 1916 Rising . He spoke warmly of his love of the Irish language and culture, and how pleased he was to see Gaelscoil children becoming competent Irish speakers and taking a keen interest in their local history, embracing it through movement and song. Chairperson of the Gaelscoil’s Board of Management Bob Casey thanked the President for the honour of his visit to the school and acknowledged the President’s keen awareness of the ideals and aims of Ruairí Mac Easmainn and his companions .President Higgins was then presented with a gift in memory of his visit to the school, and his wife Sabina was presented with a beautiful flower arrangement. After unveiling a plaque in honour of his visit to the school, the President and his wife took a stroll around the school speaking to, mingling and posing for photographs with the buachaillí agus cailíni. President Higgins left the hall to the echoes of the pupils singing ÓRó Sé do bheatha bhaile. As he left the school grounds the pupils lined the pathways to bid him a fond farewell, waving Irish flags as he continued his trip to Banna Strand to honour Roger Casement.

WHO HAS BETTER FRIENDS A husband and wife are having a friendly debate one night, centered on the topic of who has better friends. They each offer a wide variety of anecdotes and stories, but in the end, they decide to put it to the test.“Here’s what we’ll do,” the wife suggests. “I’ll call your friends, and you call mine. We’ll both pretend that the other person hasn’t come home yet, and that we’re worried. Whoever’s friends give the best advice about where to find us clearly know us better, and therefore are better.”The husband agrees to the game, and they both head off into separate rooms. When they reconvene a half an hour later, the husband looks defeated.“Okay, honey,” he says, “I think it’s pretty clear that you have better friends. Every one of them listed each of your favorite restaurants, salons, shops, and art galleries, and they had phone numbers for each of them. They knew your work hours by heart, your office extension, your boss’s name, and even the route that you take home.”The wife shakes her head. “No, dear,” she replies, “you have better friends.”“Why do you say that?” asks the husband.“Well,” the wife replies, “most of them said that you’d been at their place, and three of them said that you were still there.”

T O R Q U I N G C A R S !TOP GEAR TO GET EXTRA GEAR SPIN-OFF SHOWis to gain an online-only sister programme called Extra Gear, which will complement the main show and feature behind-the-scenes footage and special interviews.Extra Gear will be broadcast on BBC Three, and be available to view on the channel’s website as well as on the BBC’s iPlayer streaming service immediately after every new episode of Top Gear. The new show will be hosted by Top Gear presenter Rory Reid, and the BBC says it will feature exclusive new footage, interviews, specially-recorded films and behind-the-scenes access to the main show. Reid said: “Extra Gear is hugely exciting. The Top Gear fans are some of the keenest in the world and with this show I’m giving them a chance to really get a peek behind the curtain. Both new shows will hit screens in the traditional Sunday evening slot in May, though the BBC has pushed back the date the first show will air after concerns about a potential clash with Britain’s Got Talent.

MITSUBISHI ADMITS IT’S BEEN CHEATING SOME FUEL ECONOMY FIGURES FOR 25 YEARS, Mitsubishi Motors president Tetsuro Aikawaa revealed that an internal investigation discovered the carmaker has been exaggerating fuel economy data since 1991. The revelations have further dented the reputation of the carmaking industry, which has already been called into question by the VW diesel emissions scandal and its aftermath. The shocking admission comes following an internal investigation by the carmaker after being outed by Nissan last week for manipulating figures for 600,000 micro cars sold in Japan.President Tetsuro Aikawa told reporters on Tuesday that the probe was ongoing, though he could not confirm which models are affected and on what scale.

WHILE RONALDO HOPES TO DENT MANCHESTER CITY’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ASPIRATIONS, YOU CAN BUY HIS PRISTINE FORMER BENTLEYWhile Cristiano Ronaldo is trying to steer his Real Madrid side towards Champions League glory you could buy one of the cars he previously used to turn up in at Manchester United’s training ground. That’s because a 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed formerly owned by the Portuguese ace when he played in England has gone up for sale on AutoTrader. The car, which has 36,500 miles on the clock, is listed for £65,000 - far from the £200,000 the three-time Ballon d’Or winner most likely paid eight years ago - and has been made available just as the semi-final clash with United’s local rivals, City.

OIL GIANT SHELL CLAIMS PROJECT M CONCEPT IS THE CAR OF THE FUTUREShell reckons it has designed the car of the future - but the jury is out whether British motorists will agree. The Project M, dubbed an ‘energy efficient concept car’, was revealed recently .Made up of a three-seat city-car design and a 660cc powerplant that can achieve a claimed 107mpg, it’s based on an F1-derived platform that’s already well tested. The space-age shape is the brain child of former McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray. And don’t assume because it’s tiny it’s unsafe; the T27, an updated version of the T25 with an electric motor, passed Euro NCAP’s high-speed crash tests in 2011. The ‘iStream’ design, now in its third guise as part of the Shell partnership, is now more fuel efficient thanks to a bespoke engine lubricant.Tipping the scales at 550kg, it’s half as heavy as a conventional city car and 80kg lighter than the original T25 - that’s around the same as removing the weight of an adult male.

THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST CELEBRATIONS OF MOTORSPORT. HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT 2016’S EVENTGoodwood has revealed more details about the 2016 Festival of Speed, which takes place from June 23-26. It was confirmed last week that BMW would serve as the featured marque, linking in with the German company’s centenary celebrations. Which famous drivers can I see? In addition to the featured marque, details have emerged regarding some of the star drivers and riders set to appear at this year’s Festival of Speed, which will include from the world of Grand Prix racing Jenson Button, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mark Webber, Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees. The theme for the 2016 Festival of Speed is The Endless Pursuit of Power, with a focus on celebrating “the most epic machinery ever to grace the race tracks of the world” and “the intrepid pilots who tamed them”. Among the 600 or so cars and bikes in action, expect to see turbocharged Formula One cars, the hugely powerful pre-war Silver Arrows, Cam-Am competitors from the 1970s and, up on the Forest Rally Stage, Group B rally cars. Motorcycle fans will be well catered for, too, not least by assortment of awesome two-stroke Grand Prix bikes. And all, remember, will not only be on static display, but will be racing up the 1.16-mile hillclimb so that the crowds and see – and hear – them in action. Lord March, Festival of Speed founder, said: ‘This year’s Festival will see the wildest, fastest, craziest, baddest cars and bikes ever to ascend the Goodwood HillWeekend tickets are £147 (£73 if age 13 -21 )Day tickets from £55

T O R Q U I N G C A R S !MOTORING QUESTIONS WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH )

COLD COMFORTQ:  Which antifreeze should I use in my 1973 Triumph Stag? I am unable to find any with the specifications quoted in the Haynes manual. CAA: Triumph owner forums advise a glycol-based antifreeze with a corrosion inhibitor. Most reputable brands will be of this type. There is some debate over the ratio – most recommend a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix, but 30 per cent antifreeze should be sufficient for UK winters. HJ

SOMETHING IN THE AIRQ: My Ford Focus has a space-saver spare wheel. This was OK until I had to make a longish motorway journey with it fitted. Being limited to 50mph was frightening. Are there any Focus-sized cars that have a proper, full-sized spare wheel? JSA: Style, Zetec and Titanium versions of the Focus can be specified with a full-sized spare, although this reduces boot space. The alternative is run-flat tyres. HJ

THE PRICE IS RIGHTQ: I have not driven for two years, but am now looking to buy a car. I previously drove a BMW and a Lexus, but do not want to spend that sort of money. What do you think of the SsangYong Korando? CBA :The Korando is designed to be a budget alternative to the Nissan Qashqai, but in this case you get what you pay for. It’s noisy, rides poorly, and feels cheap inside. If you can’t stretch to the Qashqai, the Dacia Duster is even cheaper than the Korando and a similar sort of car.HJ

SEINFELD SELLS UP: COMEDIAN’S CLASSIC PORSCHE COLLECTION NETS HIM £16MComedian and car collector Jerry Seinfeld has sold part of his classic car collection at auction. The sale, consisting of classic Porsches and Volkswagens, netted Seinfeld $22,244,500 (around £15,800,000) in total.

These are some of the cars he sold:

This gorgeous Porsche 550 Spyder had just three owners, and had covered just 10,500 miles on it from new. Seinfeld said of it: “You can’t drive a sonnet by Shakespeare or a symphony by Beethoven. But this would be the automotive equivalent.” It sold for $5,335,000 (approx £3,780,000).

The “Flachbau” (“flat nose”) 911 Turbos might have looked odd, but with only 74 made, they’ve become real collectors’ items.

This one sold for $1,017,500 (around £720,000).

Everybody recognises the classic shape of the VW Camper, but this one was pretty special in that it was in immaculate, original, unrestored condition. It was showing only 10,500 miles on the clock, and had been subject to an EZ Camper conversion in Southern California when new. It sold for $99,000 (around £70,000).

Seinfeld was already saying that he regretted selling thisVW Beetle even before the auction, so special was it. Originally owned by a schoolteacher from South Dakota, this cute Beetle was one of the last 36bhp examples and had less than 15,500 miles on the clock. It went for $121,000 (around £86,000).

INTERESTING REACTION TO KERRY’S DEFEAT:There has been a lot of interesting reaction to Kerry’s defeat by Dublin at the weekend. We have seen the whole gamut from fire to manager to ‘sure we will take them the next time’. The truth is somewhere in between in that Kerry will improve as the Championship progresses but so will Dublin. The counties are drawn to meet in the semi-final should they both as expected get that far. Can Kerry beat Dublin then? Sure they can but they will need lots of things to go right on the day. They will need a full squad fit and ready so that the management will have options of the bench. They will need a game plan to stop Dublin’s distribution of the ball and to cut out leaving one on one match ups like Brogan enjoyed last Sunday. Kerry will need to cut out as many mistakes as possible and of course the players will need to keep their discipline – something we seem to be lacking a bit in recent times if you believe the free count against us.The other side of this is the fact that we don’t get all the free kicks that we deserve. Eamonn Fitzmaurice alluded to this after Sunday’s game, especially in connection to Kieran Donaghy. Star is a big man that plays on the edge and it seems referee’s think that he should have to put up with the pushing and pulling. Think of the kicking the likes of Messi and Maradona got and the lack of protection from many officials. Eamonn was criticised by some for using the phrase ‘rape and pillage’ saying “there was basically rape and pillage going on inside in front of goals at the other side in the second half and we didn’t get anything”.Maybe it wasn’t the best use of language but to suggest that he meant any offence to women is way off the mark. Sometimes people say things in the heat of the moment during or after games and this was one of these occasions. The phraseology was wrong but the sentiment expressed was probably correct.Aidan O’Mahony’s sending off looked harsh from the split second we saw on television. Did the Dublin player make a meal of whatever contact there was and did the Kerry players’ reputation influence the referee? Was it a case of ‘well if a player goes down and Aidan is the closest then he must have done something’? But if the footballing gods smile on us and all the above happens then we can certainly beat Dublin. Tomas O’Se’s post match column in the Irish Examiner led to home healthy discussion on his thoughts on the players including his brother Mark. Tomas did not hold back saying some of the Kerry players “were not at the races”. But people must remember that Tomas is no longer a Kerry player and has crossed to what some see as ‘the dark side!’ He is now a pundit and writer and a very good on at that and he would

be doing a dis-service to his readers if he didn’t critique all the players fairly. It can’t have been easy to criticise the performance of his brother but how could he talk about other players if he didn’t include Mark. And of course his editor (the bane of us columnists life!!) would not have been happy either.Kerry fans do not like loosing and losing again to Dublin is painful for them. But as everyone is saying It’s Only April – and Sam is not going on his travels till the end of September!!

LOCAL CREWS TO THE FORE AT THE CARTELL,IE RALLY OF LAKES:A new spectator friendly route is the key ingredient of this year’s Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes that takes place in Killarney this weekend. All of the action, over 16 special stages takes place within 25km of the town, with the bulk of the action set for mid or east Kerry. Over 140 crews from all over Ireland and beyond are set to tackle the county’s biggest motorsport event. Unusually, the rally does not open with a run over Moll’s Gap. Instead the daunting ribbon of tarmac that runs parallel to the Killarney to Millstreet main road and known locally as Gortnagane is the opening test. This is followed by loop of stages near Millstreet and Rathmore before the rally heads east to new territory around Miltown. The Dromin Hill stage, last used by the Circuit of Kerry Rally in the early 1980s makes a return alongside spectator favourite Rockfield before the day’s action concludes around 6pm.Sunday is run over a lot more familiar territory with Moll’s Gap and Balleaghbeama proceeding newer versions of Carragh Lake and Shanera. Unusually, Caragh Lake is the final stage of the rally before the crews head for the podium finish at the Gleneagle Hotel. Leading local driver is Alan Ring who will be hoping to put a recent run of bad luck behind him on his home stages. The Castleisland man was forced to retire his newly acquired Ford Fiesta R5 from the recent Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry due to fuel pressure issues. He starts at nine, four places behind Bantry-driver Keith Cronin, who has local co-driver Mikie Galvin on the notes. The pair will be opening to regain the lead in the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship following a non-finish on the Circuit of Ireland three weeks ago. Fergus O’Meara and Brian O’Doherty are the leading local team in the national section of the rally. They have fitted a newer, more-powerful, engine to their Ford Escort Mk2 in an effort to stay ahead of chasing uncle and nephew team of Ed Murphy and John McCarthy. Other local family crews tacking the rally include father and son team Charlie Hickey/

Johnny Hickey (Ford Escort RS) and Charlie’s brother John in a similar car. Andrew Duggan returns form Abu Dhabi for the weekend and he will have his sister Tara co-driving. Kevin O’Donoghue and David Randles will run their newly built BMW E30 for the first time. Tadhg O’Sullivan/Eoin O’Leary (Ford Escort Mk2) and Ken O’Neill/Ronald Riordan (Ford Puma S1600) are worth keeping an eye on too.

The Kerry Schoolboys Girls League Cup finals will be held mostly at the KDL All Weather and we will be keeping an eye on the Tralee clubs involved and those that win their Leagues. The first KDL Cup final, the Denny Division 2B final, took place last Sunday with Strand Road and Windmill United playing out a 1 all draw. Jamie Sheehan Leen had given the Tralee side the lead but in the 93rd minute Gavin Collins snatched an equaliser for the side based around Blennerville. This weekend it’s the Division 1B League Final with Tralee Celtic taking on Atletico Ardfert at 1.30pm on Sunday. Tralee Celtic won the League phase with 11 wins from 12 games. Atletico won 9 of the 11 games they played and these sides were the top two all year. Celtic won the home game 1-0 and the away game 3-2 so will be favourites to take the League trophy.U17 League of Ireland: The U17’s are in the first phase of their first season in the SSE Airtricity League and have 3 more games before their summer break. NEW RESEARCH PROVES THAT TAKING PART IN PIETA HOUSE’S DARKNESS INTO LIGHT POSITIVELY INFLUENCES YOUR WELL-BEING - FACT!Pieta House in conjunction with the University of Limerick have proved that the effects of participating in Darkness Into Light go beyond those of a fundraiser! Dublin, 26th April 2016: Each year thousands upon thousands of people take part in Darkness Into Light, Pieta House’s flagship fundraiser, which this year celebrates its eighth year. Darkness Into Light, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, has become Ireland’s largest community fundraising event and, this year, Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of suicide and self-harm expect over 110,000 people to rise early and walk into the dawn in over 100 locations in Ireland and internationally. Today Pieta House, in conjunction with Professor Orla Muldoon, Dr. Rachel Msetfi and Michelle Kearns of the University of Limerick, reported new research highlighting the benefits of taking part in the event.

Of those who took part in last year’s Darkness Into Light, 2,000 participants were invited to complete an on-line survey comprising of a series of questionnaires measuring exposure to suicide, group identification and Positive Affect.

The findings include;

• A statistically significant increase in levels of well-being after taking part in Darkness Into Light• Greatest increases for those who had lost someone to suicide• Darkness Into Light is more than a fundraiser, it’s an effective intervention • The important role of connecting with others to overcome suicidal ideation

Michelle Kearns from the University of Limerick, said: “We found that there was an increase in levels of well-being after taking part in the event, and that the effects were largest for those who had lost an immediate family member to suicide. We believe that a key part of this is the feeling of support and connection that participants experience while taking part in Darkness Into Light.” Dr Paul Surgenor, Director of Research at Pieta House, commented: “Darkness Into Light can be viewed as more than just a fundraiser - it’s an intervention for those who have lost somebody to suicide, and an act of support and solidarity for everyone else. This finding can be explained through processes of group identification with other participants and social connectedness.” Dr Surgenor continued: “These findings confirm anecdotal evidence we’ve heard from participants over the last eight years and we’re sure that this is why Darkness Into Light has become the phenomenal success it has.” For further information please email Oliver Skehan [email protected]
