Middle School Camp to Tassie

Thirty two year 9 and 10 students and their accompanying teachers Denise Rudy, Daniel Mayadas and Jenny Wood all survived the turbulent waters of the Bass Strait Tasmania crossing. The majority voting the boat trip on the new Spirit of Tasmania as being their favourite experience.

Highlights of the trip included being haunted by the presence of past inhabitants during the Ghost tour at Port Arthur, The Tahune Airwalk where we walked 45 metres above the tree canopy, having snowball fights on Mt Wellington and for some of us flying for the first time.

Principal’s Report Term 4 update: At the time of writing our year 12 students are progressing through the state-wide VCE exam schedule. We really hope that they get what they wish for in terms of their results and that all of the hard work has paid off. Regardless of the outcomes we are proud of all of them.Year 11 students also start exams this week, and whilst these are not external exams, they do set the scene for what they will face next year. We strongly encourage them to make the most of this opportunity to hone their skills in exam preparation and technique. It will be a very worthwhile experience for them. This week our Year 8 students are off to Melbourne for a city experience camp. I am sure they will have a great week.Staffing Update: Our final staffing profile is becoming clearer but we still have some things to be sorted. We currently have 3 jobs advertised but will need to possibly advertise one more when the intentions of staff become known to us. We will have a number of new faces around the school next year and I will let you know of the details as they come to hand. All of our positions of responsibility for next year have been decided and I thank staff for putting up their hand to take these very important roles.

Essential Student Learning Items

Levy - 2017Within the comprehensive curriculum offered at Lowanna College, students consume items, activities and services which support the standard program.

These items, activities and services are essential to support student learning of the standard curriculum and are deemed compulsory. The College charges an Essential Student Learning Items levy for these items, activities and services.

Lowanna College makes every effort to keep the cost of materials and services low whilst maintaining a high level of education for our students. The levy for each mini school is as follows:

Junior School: $175.00Middle School: $200.00Senior School: $250.00

Plus an optional contribution of up to $50.00 for welfare services, equipment and building maintenance.

There is no increase in these fees for 2017. In fact, a discount of $20.00 is being offered per student, if the Essential Student Learning Items Levy is paid by 31st March 2017 (the end of Term 1)

Year 10 ProgramThe semester is quickly coming to an end, and this is particularly the case for the current Year 10 students. The 2016 Year 10 timetabled classes will conclude on Friday, November 25. On this day, the Year 10s will also move their lockers to the Senior School and in the following week, (November 28 to December 2), the Year 10s will commence a Head Start program to prepare them for 2017.

Friday, December 2 will be the last day for Year 10 students at Lowanna for 2016.

There are a number of Year 10 students who are studying a Year 11 subject, and this week, they are currently sitting exams. Most of these students have elected to study this subject at Year 12 level in 2017, so from November 14, they will be part of the Year 12 head Start program in their chosen subject(s).

Year 10s who have included a VET (Vocational Education & Training) program as part of their 2017 VCE/VCAL Course will be attending a VET Orientation day on Wednesday,

It is an exciting end to the Year for the Year 10 students and the variety of their programs, reflect the different pathways on offer at Lowanna.

Would you like to Host an Exchange student in 2017?In August of this year, the College welcomed an Exchange student from Finland into Year 10. Mira Jurvakainen quickly settled into life at Lowanna and in the wider local community, and it is always a great experience for our College community to host an Exchange student. An upcoming edition of Lowanna News will have an article with Mira, who will be with us until May 2017.

Mira is part of a program with an organization called Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. In February 2017, they are welcoming students from France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Austria, and Japan. They are looking for families who are prepared to host a student next year under their program, and if you are interested in finding out more information, there is a brochure attached to this edition of Lowanna News, or contact Brian McKenzie in the Middle School.

Yr 11 Vic market excursionThe Queen Victoria Market is famous for its fresh produce and speciality shopping. Year 11 Food Technology students enjoyed the Hunt and Gather tour. Students were guided around the fresh food sections of the market and given an insight into the history of the market, where the food is sourced and how food is sold. After the tour students had time to revisit the Fresh food area to purchase food for lunch and some time to visit the market stalls.
