REMOTE AREA NURSE ANNUAL TRAINING The month of May will see all seven of our registered nurses on staff complete the Ambulance Victoria delivered Remote Area Nurse Emergency Care Program. This is a significant commitment by our nursing staff; they undertake pre workshop study and then three days of competency assessment in Melbourne. Our partnership with Ambulance Victoria is an important one. Ongoing education and training ensures our community has access to highly trained health professionals.
STAFFING MATTERS The most important asset of the Centre is our staff. I thank them for their ongoing professional input into the organisation and commitment to the organisations vision and values.
Anita Weaver will be completing some additional project work and will be coordinating Wimmera Uniting Care’s outside area redevelopment, the Men’s Shed refurbishment project and assisting with the Ambulance Victoria colocation project. So you may see her around a little more often over the coming months.
MEDICATION DELIVERY Whilst Reed’s pharmacy are committed to ensuring provision of regular and secure delivery of medications to the Balmoral district the current system is far from ideal. We are still working towards a better system. Our wish is that the service continues to be a 5 day a week delivery service. In the meantime it is important to be aware that when ordering medications to be sent from Reed’s Pharmacy that they may not be delivered the next day and it is essential to plan ahead.
NDIS and STAFFING I am pleased to advise that we have been successful in our negotiations with representatives from the National Disability Insurance Scheme for funding to support some disability care provision. Following intake assessments we identified the need to employ additional expertise to deliver the education component of the plan.
Alexandra Mason will commence next week as a Community Services Project Worker (casual) to deliver this education component. Alex is a qualified teacher, Victeach registered and has extensive experience in internet technology. Alex is also a musician and we look forward to utilizing her skills for music therapy with suitable clients. Alex is looking forward to the challenge of joining our organisation.

World Hand Hygiene Day – 5th
May 2015
The World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2008 introduced world hand hygiene day to promote the
benefits of good hand washing technique to prevent the spread of germs causing infections and
therefore saving lives. One of the best ways to stop the spread of germs is to wash your hands. Hand
hygiene is the act of cleaning ones hands with or without the use of water or another liquid, or with the
use of soap, for the purpose of removing soil, dirt, and/or microorganisms.
Although people usually think that germs are spread through the air, the fact is that germs are most
easily spread through hand contact.
Washing hands helps to physically remove germs by friction, and to rinse them down the drain.
Adults and children should wash their hands:
When hands are visibly dirty Before you eat Before you prepare food items After touching raw meats like chicken or beef After contact with any body fluids like blood, urine or vomit After changing nappies After touching animals or pets After blowing your nose or sneezing After going to the toilet After attending to sick family members After handling rubbish or gardening
Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The few seconds you spend at the sink could save you
trips to the doctor's office.
There are many internet sites showing the best techniques but basically wetting your hands with water
then applying soap and rubbing it over your hands for 20 seconds (or singing twinkle twinkle little star)
and rinsing the soap off with water will give you good results.
Happy hand washing and singing!

PLANNED ACTIVITY GROUP news
It's never too late to love, to learn or to really LIVE your life – or too early. That was the message of the
surprise British hit "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" in 2011, and that message is even more
pronounced and entertaining in the 2015 follow-up, "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it's
making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of
his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy - posing a
rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and
Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where
their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and
Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky
waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two
eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know
the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie
Smith), the keeper of everyone's secrets.
Exercise program with Tallie was a great afternoon as we learnt new
moves and watched Tai Chi movements to keep your mind and body
active. An enjoyable exercise that can relieve your pain, improve your
health and ability to do things. Tallie has started classes at the Centre
each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 11am.
Hamilton PAC Friday on 17th we heard great songs of the War Years, 2015
the 100 year anniversary of ANZAC, the show celebrated the songs of the
war years. Songs included We’ll Meet Again, Under the Lamplight, Blue
Moon, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and more.
We visited Monivae College to see the Tenzin Choegyal and Monks of Tibet, creating a beautifully
intricate sand mandala from brightly coloured sands, we observed the monks at work and could ask
questions about Tibetan culture and religion. This was another interesting day out enjoyed by all.
Craft afternoon will finish off another month of activities.
Men’s Shed have been busy filling Mail Box orders, and completing
a few different projects, it’s all happening at the shed.

Following on from the information in the Health Promotion article on World Hand Hygiene Day on the May 5
th we can incorporate Pelvic Floor Exercises while washing our hands!! So every time you wash
your hands do your pelvic floor exercises.
Life's events can weaken pelvic muscles. Pregnancy, childbirth and being overweight can do it. Luckily, when these muscles get weak, you can help make them strong again. Pelvic floor muscles are just like other muscles. Exercise can make them stronger. Women with bladder control problems can regain control through pelvic muscle exercises, also called Kegel exercises.
Pelvic fitness in minutes a day Exercising your pelvic floor muscles for just 5 minutes, three times a day can make a big difference to your bladder control. Exercise strengthens muscles that hold the bladder and many other organs in place.
Finding the right muscles are the most important…..You should tighten the two major muscles that stretch across your pelvic floor. They are the "hammock" muscle and the "triangle" muscle. Try to stop the flow of urine when you are sitting on the toilet. If you can do it, you are using the right muscles. Also imagine that you are trying to stop passing gas. Squeeze the muscles you would use. If you sense a "pulling" feeling, those are the right muscles for pelvic exercises. Pull in the pelvic muscles and hold for a count of 3. Then relax for a count of 3. Work up to 10 to 15 repetitions each time you exercise.
Don't squeeze other muscles at the same time. Be careful not to tighten your stomach,
legs, or other muscles. Squeezing the wrong muscles can put more pressure on your bladder control muscles. Just squeeze the pelvic muscle. Don't hold your breath.
Do your pelvic exercises at least three times a day. Hold the squeeze 'til after the sneeze
You can protect your pelvic muscles from more damage by bracing yourself. Think ahead, just before sneezing, lifting, or jumping sudden pressure from such actions can hurt those pelvic muscles. Squeeze your pelvic muscles tightly and hold on until after you sneeze, lift, or jump. After you train yourself to tighten the pelvic muscles for these moments, you will have fewer accidents.

news EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
With such a big interest in farms this year it
seemed obvious for us to make a farm display
for the Balmoral Show. Where possible, we
spoke to each child about what they would like
to make and how we could go about it. Many
of the children chose to share aspects of their
culture, choosing animals they have at home
on their farm. -Identity
The children have had fun celebrating another
aspect of their culture this past month. Some of
the children chose to decorate rabbit ears for
Easter. After the Easter break there were some
great stories about camping trips and visits
from the Easter Bunny. We heard he was even
sneakier this year and swapped some eggs for
some dummies! There were a couple of
children who were very excited about this!
-Communication
The children have been really interested in fixing
things lately. They use the tools all around the
room to fix tables, blocks, tractors; anything and
everything really.
Children develop dispositions for learning such
as, imagination, creativity, cooperation, curiosity
and confidence.—Learning
I’m so please to share that we are now fully booked! If you
are interested in enrolling your child into care please still give
me a call on: 0448 980 027. We often have children absent
and can put children in casually .
