BATTLE OF BEERSHEBA

Beersheba was one of the most gallant actions fought by Australians in the Middle East during the First World War.

On 31 October 1917 Australian troops from the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments stormed the Ottoman defensive positions in Beersheba under artillery and rifle fire. Charging across several kilometres of open land without cover, they succeeded in defeating the garrison and capturing the town.

The detailed coin design represents the fervour of mounted warfare, capturing the Light Horsemen at full charge across the arid Middle East.

One hundred years on, we honour the courage and sacrifice of the Light Horsemen with a limited edition fine silver proof coin of only 5000 mintage and an uncirculated version featuring the same meticulous design.
