March 1 is the deadline to apply for May graduation.

Students must submit a graduation application through Campus Connect by the specified deadline to receive a degree or certificate.

Those completing graduation requirements in Summer I will participate in the August ceremony.

Applications may only be completed online. To complete an application, log on to Campus Connect by using your school I.D. number and four digit pin. Then go to “student information” drop down menu and click on “graduation application.”

Students who graduate do not have to participate in the graduation ceremony.

All graduates who have indicated a desire to participate in the ceremony

on their graduation applications will receive instructions by student email approximately one month prior to the graduation ceremony.

There is no graduation fee; however, students participating in the ceremony must purchase a cap and gown.

Caps and gowns can be purchased through the bookstore beginning about two weeks before the ceremony until 3 p.m. on graduation day.

Diplomas are not awarded at the graduation ceremony, but will be mailed when the Registrar’s Office certifies that all graduation requirements have been met.

The Spring 2013 commencement ceremony is set for Friday, May 10, in Dodson Auditorium with two ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Summer graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in Dodson Auditorium.

The KC Visual Arts Program will host its annual Secondary Art Symposium for secondary school art teachers and students 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Feb. 1 in

Dodson Auditorium and the Devall Student Center. The purpose of the symposium is to allow professionals the

opportunity to provide insight and renew their enthusiasm for teaching art. The Symposium also allows teachers and students to see a cross-section of work from schools participating in the High School Portfolio Competition.

The portfolio competition is sponsored by the KC Art Department and will be displayed in the Devall Student Center Ballroom.

Ten scholarships ranging from $800- $2,000, presentation portfolios, certificates and medallions will be awarded to the top entries in the competition.

All high school seniors in the region are eligible to participate in the Symposium and must attend in order to be eligible for the portfolio competition.

Peter Andrew, professor of art at Stephen F. Austin State University, and Runcie Tatnall, assistant professor of art at SFA, will serve as jurors of the competition.

An entry fee of $8 must accompany each portfolio entered in the competition.

Portfolios must be delivered between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, to the Devall Student Center.

For more information, contact Carolyn Fox-Hearne at 903-983-8128 or email [email protected].

Deadlines are fast approaching for university transfers. Many universities such as University of Texas, Texas A&M University and the University of North Texas have a March 15 admissions deadline for transfers.

Students interested in transferring need to research the school they wish to attend. Most universities have websites and admissions or transfer counselors ready to help prospective students.

Almost all require an online application through applytexas.org, an official college and/or a high school transcript, an application fee and proof of a bacterial meningitis vaccination.

Students can request a copy of their transcript be sent to a university by going to the Registrar’s Office on the second floor in the Devall Student Center or by going to Campus Connect under the tab student information and clicking on “Transcript Request.”

Women’s intramural volleyball (five per team) will start Jan. 30 and will be held from 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays in the carpet gym. Students can sign up

in the Devall Student Center Game Room.

Granulated candle art will be available for students to make candles from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 14. Students living on campus will not be able to participate since candles are not allowed in residence halls but they can make paper weights at a location

to be determined. Totally Tattoos will offer airbrush

and temporary tattoos from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on March 5 in the Devall Student Center Game Room.

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The East Texas Youth Chorus is seeking singers for Spring 2013.

The chorus is open to all home-schooled youth ages 13 and older. Singers must demonstrate their abilities in a brief audition.

Cost to join the choir is $50. Juniors and seniors also can enroll for dual credit for an additional fee.

The chorus will rehearse 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday in the Turk Fine Arts Center beginning Jan. 16. Singers may join through the end of February.

Section leaders from the KC Chorale will assist the

chorus, helping to learn the music, providing vocal support and serving as role models for the students.

The ETYC will present a concert 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview.

The concert will feature musical styles ranging from classical to popular, giving the students’ experience in a broad range of music that will prepare them for singing on the college level.

The ETYC is part of KC’s Continuing Education Department.

For more information, contact Dr. Jim Taylor, choir director, at 903-983-8122 or email [email protected].

This will be the Rangerettes’ fourth

performance at the ball.“The ball is only one

evening but we will be in Washington for six days touring the capitol building and sightseeing on our own time,” Aumiller said. “The president can go to any ball he chooses but he didn’t come to the ball last time. We’re hoping he will make an appearance this year.”

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. (Goethe)

1. Attitude is important2. Don’t take yourself too seriously3. This can be the best year of your life to date4. Some things are better done in person5. Pursue excellence6. Whatever you think you can do or dream you can do, begin it.

P lan your semester. Take all your syllabi

and make a January/February/March/April/May calendar for all your tests, quizzes, homework and projects. This will help you see all that you have to accomplish during the semester and allow you to better prepare for when you have multiple things due on the same day.

1. Become familiar with the spring semester registration

guide on the KC website. It contains the semester calendar, final exam schedule, and lots of other good information that students will need throughout the semester.2. Don’t wait until the last minute to

take care of things such as making payment, applying for graduation, or dropping classes. If you run into unexpected problems, you may not have time to get them resolved before deadlines.3. Check your KC email account

regularly so that you don’t miss out on important reminders from the college.

OP I N I O NTHE FLARETUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2013 5PAGE

A new year is a time to open your options and to do what really makes you happy. At this point in your life you’ll be faced with some major decisions, ones that aren’t always easy to make. Pray for the Lord’s guidance above all else. Talk it over with

others. Consult your elders. They’ve probably been in your situation before. Seek advice but most importantly, listen. Organize yourself, take initiative and be assertive. Take each day as a new opportunity to keep moving toward what you want. You know yourself the best. Have confidence in that. The rest is in God’s hands.

Your past does not define you! Learn from your mistakes, try your best not to repeat them and move forward.
