Coffee Morning for Everyone
To discuss future breakfast clubs in
Tunley and Dunkerton.
Sunday 16th
September 2018 between 10am –
11.30am at TRC
A few of us in the Parish, of 500 people (!) have
realised that it would be great to evolve a more
sociable and supportive community between the
villages of Tunley, Dunkerton and Withyditch.
Our aim is to encourage people to get to know each
other, encompassing everyone in the parish
(Dunkerton, Tunley and Withyditch) especially
those of us who live alone.
Social
We are aware that Priston have a weekly breakfast
club and we believe this would be a great way for
everyone to meet within a relaxed social
environment. With this in mind we are arranging
an initial coffee morning at Tunley Recreation
Centre to get thoughts and ideas as to how to
proceed. This will be held on Sunday 16th
September 2018 between 10am – 11.30am,
please do come along as the more involvement
from the community at this stage, the greater the
success (cakes most welcome).
Don’t be shy about coming, please introduce
yourselves to one of us and we will make sure you
are well looked after. The whole purpose of the
event is to help everyone to get to know one
another.
If you would like to hear about the above event or
have any questions, please do give one us a call.

Report of Dunkerton & Tunley Annual Parish
Council Meetings on 25 June & 26 July 2018
Public Transport
A number of residents have complained about the
buses travelling to Bath not stopping to collect
passengers at the Old Swan bus stop, Dunkerton. The
Parish Council has written to First Bus regarding this
but has yet to receive any reply.
42 Service Park and Ride to RUH – for the latest news
see the separate article.
Tunley Village Clean Up Day
A local Tunley resident asked if others would join her
in organizing regular village clean up days. This
proposal was well supported by all present and a group
of parishioners will organize a date and call for
additional volunteers to join them. This would need to
be undertaken by the community as it is unlikely to be
funded by BANES Council.
Drone Flying Over Dunkerton Village.
A parishioner had been disturbed by a drone flying over
their garden. Therefore they contacted the police
resulting in the Police Community Support Officer
providing them with some guidance on the current
rules. The parishioner was happy with this police
response and the parish council has attached the
guidance to the July meeting minutes and posted it on
Facebook and the website.
Community Support and Events.
It is planned that the first breakfast club will start in
Tunley on the 3rd Sunday in September. More
information will be made available in a letter to be sent
out to all households in advance.
Update on Truespeed Installation Across the Parish.
Truespeed initially started installing poles in
Withyditch but, following complaints from local
residents to Truespeed and the parish council, the
residents with the support of Cllrs Gardiner and
Robinson gained the agreement of the company to
remove the poles and take forward a proposal for an
underground solution. A few weeks ago in Tunley
Truespeed undertook a lot of work that involved
digging up the pavements despite having originally
advised that all work would be overhead. Following a
site meeting with Truespeed there will now no longer
be any more underground work in Tunley. In
Dunkerton it is proposed that the work will mostly be
underground by making use of existing ducting with
some work overhead using existing poles.
Subsequently a public meeting has been held in Tunley
on 11th July at which Truespeed managers gave what
was believed by attendees to be a very optimistic

forecast that their service will go live in the parish
within two months – mid September. There was a
feeling that, for commercial reasons, Truespeed seemed
less interested in delivering against their advertised
schedule seeing tasks through to a successful
conclusion in specific areas, and more interested in
racing to ensure some implementation activities were
going on all over Somerset.

Extension
Proposal to extend the newly installed footpath in front
of The Wheelwrights, in a westerly direction behind the
traffic calming buildout and in front of Meadow Dene,
to link up with the rest of the existing footpath on the
south side of Bath Road.
This proposal is being taken forward by B&NES
highways department as a scheme for possible inclusion
in their 2019/20 capital program. In case this fails to
gain approval for inclusion in the 19/20 capital
program, the parish council is adopting a belt and
braces approach and is seeking potential alternative
funding by way of the Community Infrastructure Levy
(CIL) that was paid to B&NES Council, by the
developer of The Wheelwrights. To this end the clerk
and Cllr Robinson recently met with B&NES Cabinet
Member for Communities, Cllr Paul Myers, and
B&NES communities’ manager, Dave Dixon who both
supported the parish council bid and will enter into
negotiations on our behalf with the relevant B&NES
departments.

Following a couple of thefts of equipment, gates
providing vehicle access to the ground are now locked.
Parish Rights of Way and the Deregulation Act
2015.
While news was awaited on the likely implementation
date of this legislation, it was agreed that the parish
council would start work to ensure all rights of way
were shown on the Definitive Map of public rights of
way. Parishioner’s assistance and local knowledge with
this work would be appreciated. If you are aware of any
existing public rights of way, or historic footpaths, that
are not shown at present on the definitive map, would
you please contact Cllr. Di Prescott with the details.
The definitive map can be viewed on the parish website
or by contacting Cllr Prescott. We appreciate that it will
take a little time for those who are interested to research
the information, the parish council will therefore keep
this invitation to residents to get involved open until the
end of the year.

Bus Service 42 from Odd Down P&R to RUH – Use it or Lose It There have been rumours flying around that this service will cease operating this month. However this is not the case in the short term but in the longer term its future could be in doubt. This Bus service 42 from Odd Down P&R to RUH has been operating as a commercial service (i.e. not subsidised or commissioned by B&NES Council) since Sept 2016. The RUH provides financial support in return for discounted travel for staff.
The operator, Wessex Bus, is now withdrawing from the local bus market and has cancelled the service from 31 August. First Bus has registered a replacement service which they are committed to run for at least 6 months and will consider its viability during that time. Therefore the parish council would
urge parishioners to use this service over the next six months to ensure that it is viewed by First Bus as financially viable. This should then secure the future of this service on a longer term basis. Note First Bus already operates their bus service 4 from the P&R site to RUH on Saturdays and Sundays – when the 42 service does not run.
WI Report
Dunkerton W.I. held their Garden meeting on the 10th July at the charming home and garden of Viv Macey. Chairs and a table were thoughtfully arranged so we could conduct a very brief business meeting. The meeting opened on a sad note. Member Pat Gudge passed peacefully away after a brave fight with breast cancer. A popular and keen member, she will be missed.
The trip to Greys Court will be well underway by the time this report is printed , and all 30 participants will hopefully have a jolly time.
Camerton Court summer walk is arranged for 26th July and a visit to Yeo Valley gardens is on 31st August. The meeting officially closed. Molly wished us all to mark the Centenary fly-past of the RAF, which was televised and which was watched by Mollie and husband Basil with cherished memories of his time served in the RAF. Members wandered from a Bring and Buy sale to refreshments served in the house. There were hot-dogs, with sausages expertly cooked by Viv's husband Steve, followed by homemade cakes, strawberries and cream-filled meringues .The weather was kind, the atmosphere friendly, a lovely evening. Many thanks to Viv and Steve for their hospitality.
May I quickly add a huge thank you to those who contributed to making Dunkerton W.I. stall at Camerton Fete such a success, and in particular to Viv and Frances.
Next meeting is on 11th September at Tunley Recreation Centre.

TUNLEY VILLAGE
RECREATION CENTRE
Tunley News As you will have read in the last edition of The Batch the Tunley Recreation Centre (TRC) has changed to not only having a committee but also Friends of the TRC. We hope that by creating the Friends more villagers will feel able to get actively involved in village life but without the commitment of having to attend every committee meeting or supporting every event. So, if you would like to organise a Christmas party for the children in the village or a bingo evening or a Sunday afternoon tea dance then please share it with the committee and together we can work to make it happen. September is a busy month in Tunley, with lots of opportunity to support events or get involved in them.

Camerton & Peasedown Croquet Club Rejects Aunt Emma
Today croquet is played on stubble bedded in concrete. Clearances turn into jump shots as the ball hits the rough, pirouettes around what tuffs of grass remain, or skates away like a curling stone. Knowledge of the conditions is paramount. Unfortunately, most of CPCC’s home matches were played earlier in the season when grass was greener.
The only recent away match to buck expectation was against Kington Langley, in the GC Central North League; it was the first match to be played on their two new lawns. Equal at lunch the home team came out revitalised racing to an 8:4 lead. After the fifth round, the score narrowed to 9:7. CPCC had to win the last four games. They would have if the jump shot on the thirteenth and final hoop had succeeded. The match ended in a draw.
The SWF GC high handicap league home match against Dowlish Wake was played in the baking sun; even the electronic timers gave up. One ahead at lunch, the home team, after recovering in the shade, ran on to win 11½:8 ½. The most successful player was
David Christie who won three singles and drew his doubles game.
The GC Level Play team, playing away at Bristol, was overwhelmed by the home squad and their lawns, winning only one game and drawing another. The Central South team faired only slightly better under a relentless sun that baked Dowlish Wake’s sloping lawns.
Armed with more enthusiasm than expertise CPCC’s newcomers to association croquet, their new ‘B’ League team, bravely took on long-established opponents. The team ventured to play positively, rejecting a style of defensive play, named by the CA, Aunt Emma; a gruesome tactic designed purely to bore one’s opponent into submission. As a result, they inflicted heavy wins on their opponents and narrowly missed two whitewashes.
Oh, let the rain reign.
