Meet The Teacher and BYOD Thursday 15th Feb saw the school open its
doors to the newest members of our school
community; the year 7 students and parents.
The afternoon began with Principal Hargrave
addressing assembled parents with information
about our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
policy. Afterwards the main quad became a hub
for fun, food and music. The carnival
atmosphere included karaoke from our music
girls, coffee, tea, milkshakes and gelato from
our café crew and Mr Weatherby’s sausage
sizzle. The PDHPE faculty also provided some
healthy competition with games of badminton,
volley ball and basketball. This relaxed and
informal setting provided the perfect backdrop
for our newest members of the school to
introduce their parents to the teachers who will
be guiding them through their studies this year.
A big thank you to all the parents who made it
on the day and to the staff whose time and
dedication is never taken for granted.

ISSUE #1 TERM 1 FEBRUARY 2018
HSC SUCCESSNEXT is an annual exhibition of HSC
artworks from local high schools held at
Casula Powerhouse. The show features
over twenty promising South Western
Sydney artists from 17 local high schools
located in the city of Liverpool. Liverpool
Girls High is ably represented in this
exhibition by two of our talented 2017
graduates; Ezbieta Madejska and Jenny
Bella. The show runs from 10th Feb –
18th March. We encourage you to go
along and have a look at the depth of
talent on display across all artistic
mediums. The selected artworks, which
are almost predominately female this year,
range from the powerful and poignant to
the poetic. Our congratulations to Ezbieta
and Jenny on their selection.

Deputy Principal’s Report2018 has certainly begun at full speed. As the
richness of this newsletter attests, there has
been no time wasted in ensuring that our girls are
both celebrated and supported as they embark
upon a new year of learning. For some, 2018
marks the first steps outside of the safety of our
walls and for others, it marks their first steps in
their high school journey. It was a pleasure to
watch our success stories from the graduating
class of 2017 come and visit us to share their
HSC stories and wisdom at the Ex-Student
Forum. Likewise, it was great to see the staff and
parent support for our annual Meet The Teacher
afternoon for our year 7 cohort. These events,
combined with our Open Day, Swimming Carnival
and Stymie antibullying launch have made for a
busy and rewarding start to the year. 2018 also
marks the official appointment of our new Deputy
Principal Mrs Avryl Queffert. She has been
warmly welcomed to our school over the past few
weeks and we wish her well as she transitions
into the LGHS family. A.Queffert and J.Harris

Year 7 Full STEAM Ahead with Engineering Design Challenge
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and
Mathematics) is an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
Year 7 STEAM classes started the year with a huge bang! The
design challenge was to build the tallest free standing structure
out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, 60cm of tape, 60cm of string and
one marshmallow gingerly placed on top in 18 minutes. The
race was on to work collaboratively, use creative and critical
thinking to find the best solution to keep that one marshmallow
on top. Excitement and concentration filled the classroom each
time our learners attempted this activity. As you can see from
the happy faces of our future engineers, there are many
different ways to solve this problem.
At Liverpool Girls’ High School, a team of dedicated teachers
co-create and co-teach this innovative course in Year 7 with the
goal to improve literacy, numeracy and make learning
connected, meaningful and fun.

Principal Network Awards Two outstanding members from our staff were nominated and selected to receive Local School
Network awards. Our congratulations go to Kerry Booth (Excellence in School Administration and
Support Staff) and Katy Lumkin (Excellence in an Executive Role). Kerry Booth’s award was in
recognition of her tireless work in managing the school’s SASS staff, as they transitioned into a
whole new system wide change with the introduction of LMBR. Her management and leadership
skills, together with her resilience and dedication are acknowledged with this accolade.
Katy Lumkin’s award recognises her work leading the school’s Innovations Team for the past
five years, creating significant change in teaching practice across the school. This includes the
development and implementation of our STEAM classes as well as brokering many outside
agency opportunities for our girls to excel. Her work has also encompassed the local partner
primary schools to strengthen our community links and create a parent engagement toolbox. The
Innovation Team, led by Katy, has ben the vital link that provides authentic learning opportunities
that are future focussed and skilled based. Our congratulations and thanks to both ladies.
The Launch of PA4E1 Over the next two years our PDHPE faculty will be
implementing a new national fitness initiative. PA4E1
stands for Physical Activity For Everyone.
The aim is to increase the physical activity levels in our
students to a minimum of 60 mins per day (to avoid
lifestyle diseases such as diabetes/obesity). Lets get
moving girls.

STYMIE AT LGHSLet’s Set Some Boundaries:
Term one marks the beginning of LGHS’s partnership with the Stymie
initiative. Endorsed by the office of the eSafety Commission, this is a powerful
and proactive anti-bullying tool specifically devised to tackle the contemporary
issue of cyber bullying and the use and abuse of digital devices in the hands
of children. Speaker Rachel Downie has presented separate information
sessions to staff, students and parents during week 5. Her informative and
powerful presentations focused on the following:
Digital anti-bullying tool that allows bystanders to anonymously and quickly
report bullying.
Important information on your child’s use of technology.
Having trouble managing technology?
Want to know what they are really doing?
Tips on how to manage kids’ devices.
Tips on how to identify potential addiction and device usage issues at home.
