We have started the year well. Staff and students are energised from their break and ready for
another busy 12 months. Our first important occasion is the Whole School Family Barbecue and
Bush Dance on Wednesday 20 February. Traditionally, this is a special opportunity to welcome
new families to the School and I encourage you to attend.

2012 LEAVERS EXCEL
I am pleased to report that our 2012 results were the best ever achieved by a Year 12 cohort at
John Wollaston. Collectively and individually there were some outstanding results. Whilst Ms
Harris provides detailed feedback in her article, I would like to congratulate the 10 students who
achieved an ATAR above 90 with the Dux of the School, Saiuj Bhat, the top student on 99.85.
Saiuj was awarded a Course Exhibition for Human Biological Science as the top student in this
course in the State. As the first John Wollaston student to be awarded an Exhibition, I couldn’t
think of a person more deserving. Gifted, hardworking and humble, Saiuj deserved to succeed.
We were also acknowledged in The West Australian as being ranked in the Top 50 WACE
Schools in the State (Rank 33, 42 in 2011) and in the Top 50 VET Schools – Achievement (Rank
31) in the State. These results placed us amongst the highest achieving schools in the southern
suburbs. The students are to be congratulated. Thank you too, to the teaching staff for a
wonderful job and parents for their support.
MINISTER FOR EDUCATION VISIT
The Hon Peter Collier MLC, Minister for Education accepted my invitation to visit the School on 7
February. Mr Collier, a former teacher, enjoyed the opportunity to tour the School, visit
classrooms and interact with students and staff. I was pleased that the CEO of the Anglican
Schools Commission Revd Peter Laurence and the Chairman of School Council Mr Craig Bydder
could also be present. The Minister was most complimentary of the presentation of the campus
and the quality of education we are providing to families in the region.
EXPECTATIONS AND STANDARDS
As Principal, I am determined to ensure that the reputation of the School is enhanced in the
educational community. Key ingredients are maintaining high expectations and the
enforcement of standards. At meetings with staff and at student assemblies I have spoken about
this. Standards extend beyond school rules and academic performance, to upholding the Core
Values of the School, namely Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Commitment.

It is my expectation that students give their best in all they do, adhere to school rules, wear their uniform with pride and respect the
traditions of the School. With respect to dress and personal presentation, high standards are essential. Our uniform is distinctive and
attractive. Worn well it reflects positively upon the individual and the School as a whole. Indeed, a high standard of personal
appearance within our student body develops pride in themselves and the School. I expect your support in reinforcing measures
taken by staff to maintain high standards in all areas, including student appearance.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS
Welcome back to all students and their families for another school year. I trust you enjoyed a happy and busy holiday break.
A highlight of my summer break was an intensive 5-day conference on Positive Education in Adelaide, held at the picturesque St
Peter’s School. The conference focused on strategies to help students and adults become more resilient; to use mental agility,
mental toughness, character strengths and build strong relationships in order to cope better with what life throws at us. A team of
facilitators from the University of Pennsylvania conducted the conference and provided many strategies and ideas as to how we
can do the very best for our students at John Wollaston. I am excited to be working with the Year 7 students for an hour of
Positive Education a week, as part of their first inquiry.
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have brought home a Clubs booklet during the first week of school. Participation in a club is
compulsory in these years; Club activities have been very successful in engaging students in the life of the School outside of the
academic programme. The response slip is to be returned to Student Services Reception where allocations will be made.
Students will be notified of which Club they are in ready to start the programme in Week 3. Most Clubs run from 3:15pm –
4:15pm on the allocated day, however JSAS (Inter-School Sport) runs for a longer time depending on whether the games are at
JWACS or at another venue. Rowing Club also has different hours. Students are welcome to do more than one Club, however
subsequent choices will depend on a place being available. I urge parents to read through the brochure with their child to
select a Club which is both fulfilling and enjoyable.
Year 12 students have a month to finalise arrangements for the School Ball, which is to be held on 8 March at the Parmelia Hilton
in the city. Information has been sent home about this and students are urged to return the permission slip as soon as possible. I
very much look forward to seeing the students dressed in amazing ball gowns and suits and enjoying a special evening with
their peers.
School rules and expectations are clearly outlined in the diary and are spoken about constantly at assemblies, in House Group
and in classrooms. Our high standards of dress and behaviour are part of what makes John Wollaston such a successful school
and staff will continue to expect compliance. Parents are asked not to message or telephone their child on their mobile phone
as phones are to be turned off at all times during the school day and are not to be used for any purpose whatsoever. If students
need to phone home they are welcome to come to Student Services Reception; likewise parents who need to contact their
children can do so by phoning the School and we will get a message to the student. The penalty for a student using his/her
phone at school is for the phone to be confiscated until the end of the day and an after-school detention. It is in the interests of
the student, other students and the staff for everyone to comply with this rule.
An Australia-wide ‘Bullying. No Way’ Day will be held on 15 March. John Wollaston has registered for this event for students in
Years 1 - 12 and will be joining in with some of the activities, with a focus on Cyber-bullying.
I wish every student a happy, productive term at school.
BRONWYN TWINING
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (PASTORAL CARE)
Welcome back to all our Primary and Secondary families and students. I will take this opportunity to address some of our Year
12, 2012 results and the recent announcement of changes to what is required for secondary school graduation known as the
Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2012 YEAR 12 RESULTS
When the media discusses Year 12 results each January the figures that they are generally referring to are the Australian Tertiary
Admission Rankings (ATAR). This ATAR score comes from a student’s final Year 12 examinations, WACE examinations, and their
school marks combined. The ranking is then used by universities to offer places. The highest possible ranking is 99.95, placing
the student in the top .05 of the State.
We were incredibly proud of the ATAR results of the Class of 2012. Ten students achieved a ranking above 90, placing them in
the top ten per cent of the State. Our best performing student was Saiuj Bhat, former Head Prefect, who achieved an ATAR of
99.85, only 0.1 off a perfect score. Alexandra Brindley followed closely behind with a ranking of 98.10 placing her in the top two
percent of the State.
The quality of the results was reflected in John Wollaston being ranked 33 in the State based on the number of students with a
final Stage 3 course mark above 75%. This benchmark is published in The West Australian. The School was also recognised as
one of the schools with the highest performing students for Mathematics Stage 2C/D.
As well as being recognised for the strong ATAR results, John Wollaston was ranked 31 in the State when looking at the
Vocational Education Training qualifications achieved by Year 12s. This achievement can be attributed to our expanding
programme of Certificate courses being offered on campus.
Four of our students achieved School Curriculum and Standards Authority awards to be presented this month at a prestigious
ceremony. Our congratulations go to:
Both Saiuj and Nishani have been accepted into the Medicine programme at the University of Western
Australia.
Saiuj Bhat Course Exhibition - Human Biology (Awarded to the student obtaining the highest
combined mark in a WACE course) Certificate of Distinction - Human Biology (Awarded to students in the top 0.5 per
cent of candidates based on the WACE course score) Certificate of Commendation (Awarded to students who obtain at least 20 grades
of ‘A’ in course units or equivalents and achieve WACE) Alexandra Brindley Certificate of Distinction - Human Biology
Certificate of Commendation Zoe Erceg Certificate of Commendation Nishani Jayawardena Certificate of Commendation

payment of fees through the Payment Options, your account will now automatically be given Option 3 ie 4 payments by 15
February, 22 May, 7 August and 29 October 2013. If the account is not paid by the due date, a late payment fee of $50.00

Please contact Mrs Karen Hildebrandt, Assistant Business Manager if you require any further information regarding fees and

CHURCH OF CHRIST – DESIGNATED CHURCH PARKING BAYS
The Church of Christ requests parents not to park in the yellow lined bays and designated bays marked for
their Pastor and Administration.
PARKING, SET DOWN and PICK UP
To ensure the on-going safety of our children and the continuous flow of the traffic at the commencement
and end of the school day, parents are asked to be mindful of the following requests. Your assistance in
this area would be appreciated:
Do not park and leave your car unattended. If you require to meet your child within the School grounds, please park
at the Church of Christ carpark. Parking your car holds up the flow of traffic;
Please park to pick up your child – do not call them into the traffic flow to board your car as this endangers the child
being hit by another car, and also halts the flow of traffic.
MAIN CAMPUS TRAFFIC ENTRANCE
The main entrance to the School is not to be used to drop off / pick up students or park as these bays are designated parking
for staff and visitors. For the safety of the School community, it is imperative that all traffic requests are adhered to.
NEW “NO PARKING” SIGNS – CENTRE ROAD
Please note the new NO PARKING SIGNS on the Centre Road verges erected by the City of Armadale.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS / TELEPONE/ MOBILE NOTIFICATIONS
It is imperative that the student and parent data base is kept up to date to enable the School to contact you in the case of
emergency and other school related matters.
If you have recently changed your home address, email address, your work or home telephone number or mobile number,
kindly notify the School via email at [email protected] in the first instance.
GAILENE SHORE
BUSINESS MANAGER
In the next newsletter I hope to be able to pass on news of the University scholarships and awards our students have received.
CHANGES TO GRADUATING FROM SECONDARY SCHOOL
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has recently announced that there will be major reforms to the WACE from
2016. There will be stricter requirements for meeting graduation including students either sitting for an ATAR or completing a
Certificate II or higher qualifications. I am confident that with our balanced offerings in both ATAR and Vocational
qualifications we will be ready for the changes as they come on board.
Changes to be made for the 2015 and 2016 graduating students are still to be confirmed and parents will be kept fully
informed of any change to requirements.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)
SCHOOL BASED IMMUNISATION PROGRAMME
Please note that the school-based immunisation programme, previously offered to Year 7 students, will be delivered in Year 8
starting in 2014.
In the 2013 school-based immunisation programme, all male students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will be offered the Human
Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine series, Gardasil, to protect them against developing a range of cancers and diseases. If your
son is eligible for this vaccine next year, you will receive information and a consent form that your son will bring home from
School.
If your child is in Year 7 in 2013, they will receive their school vaccines in 2014 when they are in Year 8.
Please be assured that all children will be provided an opportunity to access the school based vaccines during the
programme shift.
If you require any further information, please contact the Central Immunisation Clinic on 9321 1312 during office hours.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
It is with great pleasure that I have started my first full-time job at John Wollaston. I studied a Bachelor of Mass
Communications, specialising in Public Relations and Journalism at Curtin University. My role encompasses most of the
School’s communications as well as establishing our presence in the media, to ensure everyone knows how high the
standard of the School is, including its staff, students and facilities.
On that note, please keep an eye out in the local papers for some of the success stories from members of the class of 2012.
It is really great to see such positive results from all the hard work and effort the students put in.
If you have any story suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 9495 8185 or send me an email to
Our first Open Morning for the year will be on Friday 22 March. If you know of anyone who may be interested in sending their
children to the School, please feel free to tell them about the event or direct them to the website for more information.
Prior to the Open Morning, John Wollaston will be hosting a sausage sizzle at Masters in Armadale on 17 March. We are
currently looking for volunteers so if you would like to donate a small amount of your time , please register your interest by
emailing me.
NICOLE LAU
COMMUNITY RELATIONS OFFICER
Or
As another year begins, many people will have made New Years resolutions. Others will simply wonder what the year will
bring. Some will have a sense of excitement and expectation.
The new School year will bring many things for all of us who make up the wider John Wollaston community.
For the students, there will be the “planting of new seeds” that will be nurtured, cared for, and hopefully flourish during the
year. The School year will bring its usual times of work and play. It will bring experiences of success and happiness, as well
as those of failure and frustration.
As a wider school community, students, families and staff will deal with academic, relational, emotional, health and spiritual
opportunities and challenges that form part of our daily lives.
My prayer for all who make up this school community is that the new year will offer hope, contentment and peace in our
work, in our endeavours and aspirations, in our families and relationships; in all that we do.
May God begin this new year with us, be with us throughout the year, and successfully bring us to its conclusion.
God bless!
