Ofsted inspection The school has been visited by Ofsted for a “subject” inspection

this week in ICT. This is not an Ofsted inspection in the usual

sense. The inspection will cover ICT departments in about 40

schools nationally to enable Ofsted to gain an understanding of

how ICT teaching is developing nationally.

Classics Tour A classics tour to Sicily is being planned for next Easter

holidays. A letter should be on its way home to you.

Public

Examinations

GCSE examinations start on Monday. In the next few weeks,

remember to walk quietly through the school foyer and do not

congregate by the boot room as exams are also held in the sixth

form centre. Remember that examinations are often taking place

while the rest of the school is having a break.

Sports Results The 1st XI beat Sutton Grammar. We scored 138 for 4 ; SGS

were all out for 64. James Scott took 5 for 18.

Commiserations to the U15 XI who were drawn against

Whitgift, the holders, in the first round of the Cup. They scored

99 for 4 but were defeated in 15 overs by Whitgift. Also to U16

Badminton lost 5-2 to Howard of Effingham in the finals of the

Surrey Cup.

Old Boy news We were delighted to see that Andrew Price, who left in 1998,

was elected as Conservative councillor in Addiscombe. Andrew

qualified as a barrister after leaving school.

6th Form

Management

Conference

Our annual 6th Form Management Conference is being held at

the school on 13th and 14

th July 2006. This is an event run in

conjunction with Wallington Girls School and is intended to

introduce our Lower Sixth Students to the world of business and

enterprise. It is an extremely rewarding and fun event. It is

hosted by representatives from the business world. The students

work in teams on various problem solving tasks across the two

days. However, the success of the event does depend on the

input from the world of business. We are looking for any

parents or friends of the school with current or previous

business/management experience who may be willing to help

act as facilitator for a team of 10 students for either one or both

of the days. Full support and training will be given prior to the

event.

If you are interested then please contact Mrs Burton

([email protected]) or Mrs Mitchelmore

([email protected]) via email or the school

number.

Lost Property If your son has lost any items during the term, please remind

him to look in Lost Property ( Reprographics Office). A

reminder that “naming” items prevents them from being “lost”

for very long.

CASHLESS

CATERING

The cashless catering system will be live on Monday 12th

June.

Boys have been issued with their photocards. Please remind

your son he must bring his card with him every day if he wishes

to purchase food from the canteen.

FAQ to help with the new system:

How will I be able to load my card?

The best way will be to bring a cheque to cover the whole term,

which will be loaded by the finance office. Your cheque will

need to be in a sealed envelope in the PTA red post box in the

main foyer by 8.30 a.m. Your balance will be updated by break.

How much will I need to put on my card?

You will need to have enough credit on your card to cover your

daily purchases so if you spend £2 a day you will need to load

your card with £10 a week or £120 a term. It is essential that

you make a note of how much is on your card at the end of

lunch every day so that you are aware of how much you have

left on your card for the next day.

What happens if I lose my card?

The main school office can issue a new card at the cost of £2

per card.

What happens if I forget my card?

The main school office can issue you with a temporary forgotten

card form, which will allow you to use your account in the

canteen without your card. However this form is valid for one

day only and after three days you will be issued with a new card

at the cost of £2.

Wilsons’s School warmly invites you to a

Page 8: Issue 1 12th May 2006 2 Summer Term.pdfIssue 1 12th May 2006 In our recent survey of parents’ views, many said that they would value more frequent and comprehensive communication

Will I lose my money if I lose my card?

No, your account is kept on a central database not on your card

so if you lose your card your balance will remain unchanged.

What happens to my balance at the end of term/year?

The balance on your card will be carried forward to the next

term. When you leave the school any remaining balance will be

repaid to you.

Changes to

catering

Over the next year there will be big changes in our catering

department. We are responding to new Government guidelines,

which come in to force in September, as well as to requests

from boys and staff that emerged from a survey completed

earlier this year.

The changes will include, over a period of time, refurbishment

of our canteen areas and provision of more dining space. Most

of these changes will take place next year because of financial

constraints. The immediate and urgent need is to renew the

equipment in the kitchen itself. This work will take place over

the summer and will cost some £85000.

More important of course are the changes to the food that will

be on offer from September. Over the next few weeks we will

advertise these changes in this information sheet.

From September, for Breakfast served from 7.30-8.30 am, boys

will be able to purchase:

• Cereal portions/ Porridge served with a selection of

healthy toppings

• 1/3 pint milk portions

preserves or marmite

Mathematics SATS

2006

We have received the Mathematics KS3 SATs results for this year.

They were spectacular. Remembering that the boys take their SATs a

year earlier than the national norm, the results (73% Level 8s, 26%

Level 7s) are very nearly equal to our best ever performance when the

boys used to sit them in Year 9! In real terms, therefore, they are

easily our best ever set of Mathematics SATs results. Congratulations

to the boys and their teachers. Science and English results are

normally published later. Year 9 parents will receive a statement of

results when they are all in.

Congratulations to Joash Howard 9H

who has been selected to represent
