ISST Coaches and Athletes, Welcome to AIS and the 2015 ISST Division 1 Girls Basketball Tournament. We are very happy to have you here at the American International School Vienna, both for the high level of competition and for the opportunity to connect with old friends and new from our different schools. Mr. Harrison and Mr. DeForest with the help of the events office staff, parent boosters and so many of our staff here at AIS have put a lot of work into making this the best championships they can be. None of these tournaments can happen without their efforts and care. Please be sure to share your appreciation with them. All that hard work, including the generosity of the families who host is now finally real. You’re here. And now it’s time to play the games. Basketball embodies all that is great about sports. It combines the creativity of beating a defender off the dribble and the toughness of fighting for position on the low post. It has the teamwork of a half court offense and the individual challenge of covering your assignment. Basketball is the grace of a jump shot arcing off the fingertips and the speed of the break away after a steal. It’s the adrenaline of a blocked shot and the butterflies in your stomach at the free throw line. Basketball is a simple game – 5 players per side, 1 ball, you get points if you get it in the hoop. But you know it to be so much more complex than that, with set plays, presses, picks and rolls, movement without the ball, flexible offenses and zone defenses. Your coaches have prepared you, scouted, analyzed and done everything in their power to make you better players, but more importantly a better team. Listen to them. They know what they are talking about. Over the next three days, the heat of competition, the thrill of victory and the pain of defeat will test your character. Make sure at the end of it all, you stand tall and hold your head up high. Not because you are champion – that can only happen for one team - but because you played like a champion. Hold your head up high because you left nothing in the tank. Stand tall, because you will be able to look every teammate in the eye knowing you had their backs they way they had yours. Play hard and play fair for your teammates and your school. As Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg once said, “play the right way … because the name on the front of the shirt is more important than the name on the back.” Support your teammates and honor your opponents. If you do that, you’ll be proud to look yourself in the eye too. AIS is happy to have you here for the next three days. You are here to compete, so play hard, play to win, and play fair. I hope that when it’s all over, you also leave having made new friends and reconnected with old ones. I would end this wishing all of you the best of luck, but you haven’t work this hard to rely on luck. Instead I say don’t give up. Play to the buzzer. You’ll make your own luck. Have a great tournament, all of you. We’re glad you’re here. A warm welcome, Dennis Harter HS Principal

Welcome to American International School – Vienna and to the 2015 ISST Girl’s Basketball Tournament. Our entire school community welcome you to Austria, to Vienna. We are all excited to have you here as our guests. Our Events Office, coaches, host families, and student-athletes hope you feel welcomed and encouraged to play well and to have fun. We hope you proudly represent your school and the ISST Conference to which we all belong. We are hopeful you enjoy spirited competition and the fun of tournament play. Organizing and running a big tournament is a great responsibility, surely, but hosting is also an honor and a great chance to showcase how important athletics and extra-curricular activities are for young people. AIS – Vienna values the opportunity annual ISST tournaments provide. We believe competitions and trips help us grow as people, developing life-themes like loyalty, friendship, sacrifice, self-reflection, and self-awareness. Years from now, we hope our students recall events like this one as integral to their memories of high school life, to the values embraced across ISST schools as reasons for sport. We hope the weekend is fun and memorable, and we thank you for entrusting us with the responsibility of hosting this important event. Good luck to all teams, and to the parents, coaches, and supporters who also visit us here on the edge of the Vienna Woods! Sincerely, Steve Razidlo, Director Dear Guests, The American International School Vienna welcomes you to the 2015 ISST Division 1 Girls Basketball Championship. We are very happy to be able to host this tournament again and we wish you all the very best for the tournament. My personal thanks go to the following; the AIS community who have opened up their homes to the visiting athletes, the school administration and teachers, the Tournament Staff and officials, especially Simon Wright who will act as Tournament Director and the Events Office --Nick DeForest, Claudia Bonek, and Karin Hackl without their hard work this event would simply not take place. I would like to wish you all a successful and memorable championship and hope that you enjoy your short stay with us. Andy Harrison Director of Athletics, Activities and Events

I.S.S.T. Statement of Sportsmanship The purpose of the International Schools Sports Tournament is to provide a venue for athletes from the member schools to compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational. Each athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate her/his best athletic ability while maintaining a spirit of respect and co-operation with fellow athletes from various international backgrounds. Each event involves students and adults in their different roles: these include the athletes, coaches, sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are expected to uphold the same spirit of respect and co-operation. This spirit is demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive encouragement from coaches, impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from spectators. The behavior of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the tournament. The adults act as models for our athletes. Therefore profanity, deliberately making noises that distract and interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the condemnation of coaches or officials, or any behavior that is disrespectful or degrading to the ISST standard of sportsmanship, jeopardizes the purposes of the ISST organization and, most of all, jeopardizes the quality of the experience for the athletes. As the event ensues, we ask that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this vision of our purpose in mind.

Housing arrangements made by the responsible official of the host school may not be changed.
Students must be in the house of the host parent by 22:00.
Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST regulations for students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school.
These regulations apply to students: both those from the host school and those visiting, throughout the competition’s duration and also during the journey to and from the event.
