FOREWORD

This Swine Situation Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by

farm type and age group; volume of production; number of heads slaughtered in

slaughterhouses; pork imports; and monthly average farmgate prices.

The Livestock and Poultry Statistics Division (LPSD) of the Philippine Statistics

Authority (PSA) disseminates the Swine Situation Report annually, every May,

covering the previous year (January to December) as the reference period. The

report is intended to serve as a ready reference for our various clients and

stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

The PSA would appreciate comments and suggestions from our data users and

readers for further improvement of this report.

The data for this Report is collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through

the two (2) major surveys, namely:

1) Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the four

(4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS). It

consists of 15,069 sample households in 1,051 sample barangays nationwide;

and,

2) Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 1,241

independent farms as of January 2018. A swine farm is considered commercial

when it has a farm capacity of at least 21 heads of adult swine or 10 adults and

22 heads of young.

Both surveys are conducted every quarter simultaneously in all provinces.

Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the Livestock and Poultry

sub-sector is the Survey of Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (SSHPDP)1.

This covers around 1,387 Accredited (AAA, AA) and Locally Registered Meat

Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National

Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

Concepts and Definitions

Backyard Farm refers to any farm or household whether farming or non-farming tending at least one head of animal and does not qualify as a commercial farm. Commercial Farm refers to any livestock farm which satisfied at least one of the following conditions:

Tending at least 21 heads of adult and zero head of young

Tending at least 41 heads of young animals

Tending at least 10 heads of adult and 22 heads of young

Death/Losses refers to the number of animals that died due to pests, diseases and/or calamities. Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.

Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific

reference date.

Beginning Inventory is the number of live animals at beginning of the reference period i.e. for January to March, the beginning inventory is as of January 1.

Ending Inventory is the number of live animals at the end of the reference period i.e. for January to March, the remaining inventory is as of April 1.

Imports refers to the number of live animals originating from foreign country i.e. live breeders and Feeders recorded by the Bureau of Animal Industry – National Veterinary Quarantine Services. Meanwhile, meat importation data came from the Trade Statistics Division (TSD) of PSA.The meat importation data from 2012 – 2015 was revised as a result of the harmonization with Agricultural Accounts Division (AAD). Locally Registered Meat Establishment (LRME) are slaughterhouses, meat processing plants, meat cutting plants and cold storages that are allowed to operate by the city/municipal government but are not accredited by the NMIS. Retail Price refers to the price at which retailers sell their goods or commodities to consumers in the marketplace. It is expressed in peso per kilogram. Slaughterhouse (SH) are premises that are approved and registered by the NMIS and LGUs in which food animals are slaughtered for human consumption. Slaughtered in Slaughterhouses refers to the number of animals slaughtered in accredited (AAA, AA, A) slaughterhouses including number of animals slaughtered in LRMEs.

Supply and Disposition refers to a framework that explains the population dynamics of animals in the farm including born live, imports, deaths and losses, number of animals slaughtered in the farm/household and sold live for slaughter which serves as supporting information or indicators to the volume of production estimates.

Value of Production this refers to the value of the animal with reference to its farmgate price. It is derived by multiplying the volume of production by its farmgate price. Volume of Production this refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight Wholesale Price refers to the price of unprocessed agricultural commodities which are traded in major local/provincial market centers. In this report, it highlights the wholesale price in Metro Manila because it is a demand area. It is expressed in peso per kilogram.

Hog production grew by 1.49 percent in 2017 compared with its level in 2016.

However, there was a drop in output in Q2 due to reduced supply of stock for

slaughtering.

The gross value of hog production at constant prices, registered an increase of

1.49 percent in 2017. This was attributed to an improvement in price and

increase in the volume of production.

At current prices, gross output of hog registered at PHP 241, 847.37 million. It

increases by 14.39 percent compared with 2016 output.
