Happy New Year!!! Hopefully you are ready for more ideas and innovation after
celebrating the festive season and surviving Valentine’s Day. We’d like to get you
in the mood for Easter and Mother’s Day along with this year’s Designz® Cup.
Easter is an important event in the Christian
calendar as well as a time to reflect on those no
longer with us. We’ve included several sympathy
designs by Tracy Tomlinson who is a British Florist
Association director and a member of the Florint
technical committee that oversees European
competitions. She’s very busy but finds time
to manage The Tomlinson Flower Company in
Coventry where clients experience excellence
surrounded by a sunny atmosphere. The shop is
always buzzing with clever ideas to draw in the
customers. Her shop counter holds a Flower of
the Week promotion which showcases the best seasonal flowers in a range of
reasonably priced designs that are fast to make and look fabulous.
Tracy mixes modern styling, quality flowers and presentation with commercial
nous to produce profits. “It’s a fusion of the very best of traditional and
contemporary floristry that makes our shop a great all rounder. Modern
techniques that cut down the time spent on designs are essential so that’s
why we like user-friendly OASIS® products,” said Tracy. The Tomlinson Flower
Company is not afraid to include more contemporary high end styles in their
thriving funeral tribute trade.
We’ve also included several designs from another
well-known UK designer named Ian Lloyd. His
shows are always a sell-out but especially when
accompanied by opera singer Helena Leonard
and her spine tingling voice. Ian owns The Flower
Shop in Wilmslow, Cheshire where he tempts every
level of customer. In fact all shop components are
moveable so that he can rearrange the floor plan
to match the changing seasons. Ian’s clients love
being surprised.
The UK School of Floristry is situated above the
shop and offers the very best in professional training for all levels. Master
classes from leading European designers are popular and Ian’s expertise as a
tutor is legendary so visit www.ukschooloffloristry.com for more information.
Local Mother’s Day designs come from Mark Pampling and Michael Cordeiro
whom we’ve featured before and they begin on page 14. See pages 8-11 for
Designz® Cup news and the theme this year will be Magic of Movies so we
hope that students will find the Australian film industry inspirational.
Happy reading!

Comfort BlanketWrapped in love this comforting blanket of flowers will symbolise an enveloping adoration.
This unique approach to adorning a coffin can be individually tailored to the personality
of the loved one by choosing appropriate colours and varieties of flowers. The design
seems to swathe the departed with adoration so follow Tracy’s easy step-by-step
instructions to create a floral blanket.

river of material along the length of the
floral foam. Secure this with decorative lilac
Round Headed Pearl Pins at intervals; do
not push the pins in too far to avoid piercing
through the base of the floral foam.
Step1Make a thick edging with Muehlenbeckia
by teasing out the bundle to form long,
wide lengths. Use strong Mossing Pins to
secure the Muehlenbeckia and hammer
them into the hard base of the OASIS®
FOAM FRAMES® Designer Sheet. Continue
until the entire floral foam edge is covered
then pour water carefully over the top. Do
not oversoak as the tribute will become too
heavy.
Step3Add groups of flowers and foliage to create
contrasting forms and textures. Blend
colours harmoniously along the length of
the floral foam ensuring all stems are firmly
anchored into it. Once the foam is covered
overlay everything with long trails of Rubus
and Aspargus fern. This gives movement
and elevation then remove some of the
fronds from the trailing fern to give a finer
look. Spray with water and leave in a cool
place to await delivery.

HeavenREACHING FOR
Long stems capture the
symbolism of a traditional Easter.
Shades of yellow lend themselves to the
natural charm of basketware. The simple
structure of Ian Lloyd’s contemporary
take on an old classic brings the basket
arrangement up-to-date.
The strong Dark Stained Willow Basket
comes from the UK OASIS® Floral Product
range so source a readily available local
substitute. Make sure that it has a waterproof
lining before filling with OASIS® Ideal Floral
Foam that has already been soaked in water
containing OASIS® Floralife® Flower Food.
In this design the emphasis is on economy
and the clever use of rolled Anthurium leaves
keeps flower content to a minimum.
Lofty Ornithogalum and Apple Green
Willow bundles add striking height to the
arrangement and balance the placement
of rolled leaves. The Irises provide
complementary contrast and despite a short
lifespan can be easily replaced when used
between long lasting Craspedia. Silver is
also appropriate in an Easter arrangement so
the Bullion Wire heart gives a final flourish to
Ian’s revitalised basket design.

Left: Stephanie Law was inspired by Van Gogh and his painting Starry Nights. She covered each of her OASIS® Floral Foam Spheres in different materials including Paper Bark and Bullion Wire. Orchids, Roses and Chrysanthemums became a crescent shaped moon while wool-covered Aluminium Wire was twisted to simulate the swirling clouds in Starry Nights.
This movement is crucial to the original painting and keeps the eyes moving until they settle on the village below where they find stillness and a large church spire. “Being really creative - creating something new and interesting every time is the best part of floristry,” said Stephanie.
Right: The Ballet Rehearsal on Stage by Edgar Degas enabled Merrie-Jane Harries to create a beautiful tutu. She pleated and stitched several layers of tulle to achieve volume before pinning her Dendrobe Orchids into position. The tutu was attached to a base that had been glued and coated with Lotus leaves then softened with an overlay of sheer organza. Delicately twisted Aluminium Wire adds decoration and completes the masterpiece.
A strong grouping of Akito Roses dominates while the shaping and placement of a Fig Tree branch mimics the positioning of a slender ballerina’s legs and upper body. It completes the design. “The thing I enjoy most about floristry is creating an arrangement that brings enjoyment to someone else,” said Merrie-Jane.

Van Gogh’s famous Mulberry Tree
(1889) captured Annie Farrell’s
imagination with its bold colour and
complex branch configurations. The
bright yellow tree in the foreground of
the original painting was surrounded
by cobalt blue skies. The artist
reconstructed natural subjects from his
memory using patterns and colours to
imbue them with emotion.
This is evident in the swirling, writhing
branches that dominate the Mulberry
Tree where they appear to change
shape and direction. Annie similarly
gave movement to her tree. She
filled it with yellow Oncidium and
orange Makara Orchids which she
kept hydrated with glass test tubes
held in place by orange mesh Wrap
and Bullion Wire. The bright coloured
Orchids created great visual impact.
Annie covered rough cuts of apricot
tree branches with Rustic Grapevine
Wire to achieve a decorative finish.
Roughly chopped yellow Rainbow
foam represents the hill and land on
which the tree grows. It seems to
sparkle like the sunlight that fills Van
Gogh’s painting.
‘I really enjoy expressing myself creatively in everyday shop work, at TAFE and in competitions,’ said Annie Farrell.

Congratulations to Michelle Arland
from Tea Tree Gully Campus, TAFE SA
for gaining the highest marks across
all states in 2011.
Michelle was inspired by the work of the Californian
Impressionist Jessie Arms Botke and her design was
described in detail in Issue Number 14 of fresh. She
did a great deal of research on the artist and then
used three metres of white satin to recreate Botke’s
favourite peacock.
All entrants spent considerable time preparing for the
Designz® Cup and every design contributed to the
overall success of the event. Smithers-Oasis Australia
thanks all 2011 participants and hope that they
enjoyed the authentic competition experience.
We are also very thankful to the judges for providing
a consistent standard across all five states. Their
results are regularly franked when our State winners
go on to receive other awards like the Interflora Florist
of the Future. Just recently Vanessa Corbell received
this title after winning the South Australian leg of the
Designz® Cup in 2010.
She has even more recently won the extremely
prestigious national Vocational Student of the
Year Award 2011. Australian Training Awards are
awarded annually to the best of the best in vocational
education and training (VET) so we congratulate
Vanessa and her tutors at TAFE SA. All our entrants
are wished the best of luck in future competitions.
Try someTRANQUILITY
The strong architecture and
neutral colours in this design
will calm down a busy mum.
The beauty of this arrangement is that it
oozes tranquility and style while florists
get to use just a few of their highest
quality stems. It’s quick and easy to
make enabling several variations
depending on placement and choice of
foliage. Select a sturdy base then fill it
with OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam so that
the tall components will remain firmly
in place and undisturbed
during travel.
Mums will love the long lasting
qualities of Anthuriums, Lilies and
Ornithogalum. The shiny black
container will always give a sharp
contrast but especially when there’s
a white coated Floral Foam sphere
just above it. Ian used sisal for this
UK design but a local substitute
like Australian wool will achieve a
similar effect. The limited colour
palette and minimalist trend is still a
favourite for Mother’s Day
and beyond.

Decorate a slender vase then add a fountain of
beaded grass for extra luxury.
Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to go the extra
mile and create something that truly celebrates this special
occasion. Ian Lloyd took the time to thread beads onto strands of
Bear and Spear grass for a decorative finish to an already stunning
arrangement. Test Tubes have been wired to an
80cm slender vase using Aluminium Wire in gold and
silver so that four Callas can form a balanced pathway
to the top of the vase.
Two strands of Asparagus desiflorus accompany them to make
frilly parallel lines. They culminate at a collar of Fatsia leaves
which sit tightly around the stems of Oriental Lilies where they
emerge from the vase. Strands of Spear grass gently fall away
at this point suggesting a fountain while the remainder of the
grasses stand upright forming a V-shape. A flourish of OASIS®
Floralife® Leafshine will keep stems and leaves looking glossy
the whole day long.

Why not? Mother’s Day is full of surprises so consider cubes
for a change.
Mark Pampling has created the ultimate in versatility with a sequence
of designs that can be arranged into a duet, trio or quartet depending
on where they are placed. Each component is in fact a miniature garden
with its own little fence and could even represent a gift from individual
children.
Separate pieces become a family when placed together and Steel grass
has been cut to the same length in identical containers for harmonious
groupings of lines or blocks. Single cubes could also be positioned
throughout the home to continually remind mothers of their special day.
Orange Butterflies hover over the flowers and they are available in a range
of colours so have some fun adding them after you have followed Mark’s
how-to-make steps.

Dainty little hearts will delight a deserving mum.
Many mums have a penchant for pink. The word dates back to the 14th century
when it meant to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern and didn’t
acquire today’s meaning until much later. In the 17th century the word was
redefined and named after the flowering plants of the genus Dianthus commonly
known as ‘pinks’.
These days the colour has become a powerful symbol for many Australian
women and Michael Cordeiro used it almost exclusively when he combined
vibrant Proteas with Leucadendron, Waxflowers and Paper Daisies. Traditional
Mother’s Day flowers like the Carnation or Chrysanthemum (think mum) could
also be incorporated and all varieties fit snuggly into Posy Holders. Decorate
them with Heart Shaped Pins to symbolise love.
Step1Select a commercially available
Posy Holder. Decorate the Posy
Holder with Red Bullion Wire
threading it securely at the edges
to achieve a clean finish. Cut off
the sharp end of the Red Heart
Shaped Pins using OASIS® Heavy
Duty Wire Cutters.
Step2Put some glue onto the end
of each pin before inserting
into the Posy Holder. Continue
this process until the entire
circumference is surrounded and
keep the spacing even to give the
design symmetry.
Step3Place selected flowers into
the Posy Holder to create a
harmonious composition and
avoid overcrowding to retain a
halo effect around the design.
This will complement the flowers
by transforming a simple grouping
into a memorable gift of love.
