M. Chandrasekhar Reddy

Nowadays, it has become la mode to talk about giving momentum to

entrepreneurship movement and enterprise culture, in the sidelights of learnedgatherings. These things are easier said than done.

The fundamental requisite for amalgamating a trait into a culture, so that it

becomes an integral part of that culture, is to make it a mandatory part ofbasic education – which obviously is the school curriculum. The entrepreneurshipdevelopment institutes like ours also have a responsibility in this process, which

ni-msme has been discharging assiduously through the half-century of its existence. In any case, undisputedly, education is the right path for spreading a culture or speeding up a movement.

With its long field experience and research insights, ni-msme grasped this point early in its

sojourn and had floated a stream of educational programmes, which ran quite successfully. However, they were all part-time post-graduate programmes in exclusive subject areas, leading to certificatesand diplomas. The areas were mostly in management discipline – finance, personnel, quality and

so on.

We are now thinking in terms of several regular streams of formal education programmes onrising and non-conventional themes, most of them with entrepreneurial underpinnings, inhering

the possibility of start-up. All the programmes are post-graduate in nature and will lead to adiploma or a certificate. Some of them are short term (3 months) duration, some medium term(6 months) and some others long term (12 months).

For this humble but new exercise we have about 15 themes of current relevance in mind, such as:environmental impact assessment, monitoring and evaluation of government schemes and

programmes, agri-business, food processing and preservation, social entrepreneurship, BPO andKPO management, intellectual property rights, TQM and six sigma, international business, patentanalytics, solar energy based food processing and processed foods, bio-technology, ayurvedicpancha karma, good laboratory practices in micro and small industries. As can be seen, most of

the themes cut virgin ground and devolve on the current felt needs of the MSEs. Also, they arebeing designed to give the educated youth the most needed relevant inputs to supplement theirprior education and make them more readily employable.

In addition, similar long term and short term PG diploma and certificate programmes are beingdesigned in the IT domain. We are considering the introduction of two one year diploma programmes

multimedia and VLSI design, and certificate courses in several IT streams including Android andI-phone. The certificate courses in the IT domain may be as short as one month.

The backdrop to the structure and design of these programmes, as also the selection of themes,

is the oft expressed woe of the MSEs that the knowledge base of the PG and technical graduatesin the employment market is totally disjunct from the requirements of the industry especially inthe managerial domain, that their perception of industry requirements is only vague at best.

Besides, in the few cases who somewhat approximate the requirements, the salary expectationsare somewhere in the stars, far outside the bracket of any MSE, hence once again not useful.Apparently, there is a hiatus between the available and the needed.

This initiative of formal education is a modest ambition on our part, propelled by the endeavourto bridge the gap between the employability of the educated youth and the managerial requirementsof the MSEs. All the academic members of our four schools are working extra time to finalise the

structure and design of the programmes and fine-tune the inputs to suit the current requirementsof the MSEs in the managerial domain.

Here is hoping some of the programmes will certainly be ready for launching in the very near

future.
