September 1 - 11, 2016

The Footsteps of Paul - Optional 3 Night Greece Extension only $549

Israel 2016: A Walk Through The Bible Day One, Thursday, September 1: depart LAX on your flight to Israel Day Two, Friday, September 2: After arriving in Israel at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, meet our guide, Gilla Treibich, and driver for brief sightseeing in the Tel Aviv/Joppa area before going to our hotel on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. We have breakfast and dinner daily at our hotel.

Day 3, Saturday, September 3: We head up the Medi-terranean coast to Caesarea Maritime, the artificial harbor and city built by Herod the Great. A restored Roman the-

ater where proof of the historical existence of Pontius Pi-late was found is a highlight at Caesarea, along with a Crusader fortress built during an earlier war with Muslims and an aqueduct built by Herod the Great. We will Continue north to Mt Carmel for a breathtaking view of the Jezreel valley from the spot where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal. Drive through the lush valley to Me-giddo, stopping at the strategic city in biblical history and biblical Armageddon (Rev. 16:16). Drive into the Galilee and visit Jesus’ boyhood city of Nazareth. We will then check into our hotel in Tiberias for a three-night stay right on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Day 4, Sunday, September 4: Sail on the Sea of Gali-lee in an enlarged version of the boats used by Jesus and his fishermen disciples, then study an actual boat

from the time of Jesus as it was discovered on the floor of the Sea of Galilee. Re-experience the challenging and comforting words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount at the Mt of Beati-

tudes. At Capernaum, where Jesus based his 18-month Galilean ministry, stand within the foundations of

the synagogue where He preached and healed and see the house of Peter’s family where He stayed. At Tabgha, an ancient mosaic remembers the Miracle of Loaves and Fishes and another spot recalls where the risen Jesus fed his disciples after a miraculous catch and gave Peter his commission to “feed my sheep.” For lunch today, on your own, opportunity to try St Peter’s Fish, the same catch prized by Jesus’ fisherman disciples. End the day with a ceremony of baptism in the Jordan River for those who wish. Day 5, Monday, September 5: Traverse northern Isra-el today, includ-ing Caesarea Philippi, center of Roman might and pagan worship in Jesus’ time, where He chal-

lenged his disciples then and now, “Who do men–and you

say that I am.” Explore one example of that Roman might in the recently-excavated Palace of Agrippa. Continue to the northernmost city of biblical Israel, Dan, and see the excavated gates that Abraham entered as he first jour-neyed through the Promised Land. From atop Mt Bental, an abandoned Israel Defense Force base, see “The Damascus Road” and overlook “The Valley of Tears,” where brave Israeli tankers sacrificed themselves to stop a Syrian advance. Struggles. Day 6, Tuesday, September 6: Start heading south in the Jordan Valley, stopping first at Bet Shean, where the bodies of King Saul and his sons were hung by the Philis-

tines. A Decapolis city in Jesus’ day, Bet Shean was

both destroyed and saved by an earthquake–as archaeol-ogists have now done a fantastic job restoring the ruins.

While following the Jordan Valley, speculate on the pos-sible location of biblical Gilgal, where Joshua and the tribes placed 12 stones in celebration of their safe cross-ing of the Jordan. Stop at Gideon’s Spring, where the Lord mysteriously winnowed his soon-to-be-victorious army. Time and political situation permitting, visit Jericho where Joshua “fit the battle” and where Jesus’ 40 days of temptation are recalled. Then as pilgrims have done for millennia, it’s “Up to Jerusalem,” with a special Hebrew ceremony of welcome at a panoramic overlook of the stone-built city and Temple Mount and a walk down “The Palm Sunday Path” to the Garden of Gethsemane for unique and powerful prayer time. Check into our well-located hotel for the rest of the journey. Day 7, Wednesday, September 7: Drive through the lunar landscape of the Judean Wilder-ness on the way to the Dead Sea, low-est spot on earth with water so salty you cannot sink (bring a swimsuit if you want to try). Ascend by cable car to Masada, the fortress-palace built by Herod the Great, where zealous Jews resisted the might of Rome after the destruction of the Temple. Visit the caves

where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found at Qumran. Visit the date-palm oasis of En Gedi , where the anointed David spared the life of his adversary King Saul.

Days 8, 9, 10, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, September 8, 9, 10: These three days will immerse you in The Holy City, experiencing all the following--and more! Orient yourself to Jerusalem in the time of Jesus by stud-ying the incredibly-detailed, large-scale outdoor model of The Holy City at the Israel Museum, where you will also view actual scrolls and artifacts discovered in the Dead Sea caves of Qumran. Explore the city as it was originally, outside the current walls, as you descend below street level into the exciting discoveries of the first capital of Israel when it was known as “The City of David.” Another early feature of Jerusa-lem to experience is Hezekiah’s Tunnel, an engineering feat that brought water into the Pool of Siloam when Je-rusalem was under siege. Wading through Hezekiah’s Tunnel is quite an experience—so bring shoes that can get wet and a flashlight if you are feeling adventurous. Worship in the special setting that recalls the Upper Room, see the memorial known as David's Tomb. See the actual stairs up which Jesus was dragged to The High Priest Caiaphas's House and worship in the church that protects the area where Jesus was held cap-

tive and where Peter denied him. Explore and shop in a completely restored Roman shopping street known as the Cardo. Sit on the actual Southern Steps of the Tem-ple where Jesus taught before His Passion while enjoy-ing a special Bible study with Pastor Bud. Pray at the Western (Wailing) Wall, leaving scrolls of your pray-ers in the giant stones remaining from the Temple, from where Jewish tradition says prayers go most directly to heaven. Study the fascinating objects discovered in ex-cavations of the southern Temple area, and actually go under the Temple area as you explore the famous Rab-bi’s Tunnel. Up on Temple Mount, Muslim mosques dominate where Solomon and Herod the Great built the Temple. You will have the chance to walk up to the ex-act location where the Temple once stood.

In the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, descend through time to explore remains of houses of the wealthy of Jeru-salem that were destroyed with the Temple in 70 AD. Shop for souvenirs and Jewish worship articles in The Cardo, a restored Roman shopping street, and at Shor-ashim Biblical Shop, where two Jewish brothers share about their faith and their appreciation for Christians who love Israel. Pray for the healing of loved ones at the Pools of Be-thesda, then marvel at the acoustics as you sing in the Crusader Church of St. Anne. Stand on the pave-ment where Jesus was tormented by the soldiers in the Lithostrotus (Judgment Hall of Pilate). Walk the twisting, narrow streets of the Old City, still very like they were on the day when Jesus carried His cross on the Via Dolorosa. Go just outside Jerusalem, just past the Damascus Gate, to the hillside where nature has gouged out caves that remind many of a skull’s nose and eye sockets, Calvary, Golgotha, place of the Skull . . . and then end your experience of Jerusalem and The Holy Land with a service of Holy Communion, set in a lovely private garden where there is a Tomb that is gloriously empty. After a special “farewell banquet” September 10, spend your last night in the Jerusalem hotel Day 11, Sunday, September 11: Some people will fly back home, arriving on the same day, while others fly on to Athens, Greece, for the fantastic Footsteps of Paul extension. See brochure insert for Greece itinerary.
