Concept Statement

A Design that captures the Unprecedented Event. By representing the presence of music in the Historical Trace the context. Creating a Focal Point that eternally flows into space in the very spot where all the vectors traverse and extend it’s echo to the Public Realm.

Performance space

The previous diagram was translated into the concert hall ‘s seating arrangement. The dimensions were taken from Renzo Piano’s concert hall “Isabella Stewart Gardner museum” in Boston. Both are supposed to take 300 seats. In the design there are two spirals separated by a wall. One is looking inward to the performance area. The other is looking outward to the city as its eco. And it keeps echoing in the plans and landscape. If I were to refine my work, I would treat the inner spiral to look more like a spiral from the inside rather than showing the breaks in it by having a wall that covers the breaks adequately.

Research and Exploration

I used the “Isabella Stewart Gardner museum’s concert hall as a reference to size my concert hall. Both I used the same clear space length as a diameter for my circle in order not to have major sound issues.

Site Analysis

• Building’s scale varieties from low rise building (three stories) to high rise buildings (twenty six) stories. View corridors

The site’s location in context

The site is located in Dalton Street, Back Bay Boston. The most important factors affecting the site are: • The surrounding building scale • The surroundings Buildings’ Typology and building materials • View Corridors

• diverse buildings’ typologies. Modern, traditional. • Diverse façade materials (Brick, Concrete, glass cladding)

Response to Site

• Building’s scale varieties from low rise building (three stories) to high rise buildings (twenty six) stories.

• The surrounding building scale The new building’s height is equivalent to the adjacent buildings.

• The surroundings Buildings’ Typology and building materials Respond to the surrounding façade materials (Brick, Concrete, glass). A decision was made to make the façade a combination of the surrounding materials in a modern theme with hints of brick screens to keep the essence of the historic context alive.

• The roof will be seen as an important view to the people in the upper floors of the near by hotels . So, it was addressed as a public space to be inhabited by students. Classes are have also openings that overlooks to roof gardens.

• diverse buildings’ typologies. Modern, traditional. • Diverse façade materials (Brick, Concrete, glass cladding)

The new building • Concrete • Glass • Brick screens

A combination of the surrounding building materials was reformed in a new way.

Analysis Site

These images show how the concert hall was located to be visible from both view corridors. In earlier studies the concert hall was suggested to be on the edge but, a difficulty in sizing the concert hall at the edge. I moved the concert hall to the center and the problem wasn’t solved by that, so the building had to split into two levels and the ramp that is wrapping the concert hall became the vertical and the horizontal circulation mean. At this point I was supposed to move the concert hall back to the corner to emphasize the corner and to get rid of the fragment in the elevation of Dalton street.

This sketch shows three scenarios of the relationship of the concert hall to the site in plan and section. I prefer the first scenario. Because the second one is almost in the center creating a fragment in the elevation. The third option is to close to the edge.

Context Analysis

This diagram shows that the public space in this spot of the city is poorly designed. This problem was addressed by adding the public open space as a plaza to the building and reflect the building’s design as a reference to achieve this unity.

If I were to refine this design I would connect the frames that are forming the two paths that are leading people to the building’s entrance.

Context Analysis

A decision to connect the plaza to the ally was made from beneath the building, to create a special moment and increase the connectivity.

Program Analysis

The our ward stairs that wraps the cylinder are working as the vertical and horizontal circulation in the building. Every half a floor a person can get to the next space. There are three stair cases and one elevator in the middle of the building.

If I were to work more on this design I would take into consideration heat gain and day lighting factors. The eastern elevation should have more screening to reduce glare and unwanted heat. I would rework the classes organization in the roof to get more Sothern exposure to the southern sunlight. As mentioned earlier I would move the concert hall to the eastern corner of the site. The landscape of the roof gardens should be designed and unified with the public space design.
