ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan

We can get… books articles anything

Things we may not be able to get… patents audio/visual materials if a library only has an electronic version old or rare items (though some items are available on archive.org)

Page 3: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

We have access to…

Canadian university, public, government and corporate libraries American university, public, government and corporate libraries many international libraries via FirstSearch/WorldCat consortia British library a German library consortia all other libraries, publishers, and authors via direct email

Page 4: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

How long?

articles can be quicker than books some libraries will electronically send articles, some by mailthe farther away the library is, the longer the mail will take 1-14 days if coming from a Canadian library European and international libraries are hesitant to loan

Page 5: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

Once a patron submits a request… if it has an isbn/issn, nothing in the note field, and a matched location, it will go out without us touching it no isbn/issn, something in the note field, or no match found in RACER, staff will mediate if it is available in TUG, we pass it on to TUGbars if it’s available at a local public library, we’ll ask the patron if they’d like to pick up that copy

Page 6: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

About 2% of requests cannot be successfully completed. This could be caused by…

expense of item requested short deadline conference paper presented but not published very obscure item

Page 7: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

Please do not put requests under your name for a patron

let them get comfortable with RACER if there is a problem (late, missing, damaged, etc.) it is under your name RACER copyright agreement is not transferable

Page 8: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

Thesis?

Canada – micro U.S. – paper or micro U.K. – 50/50 chance. May be requested by patron through ethos.bl.uk or by us contacting the university (some are $$$) rest of the world – not so good upside – many are online via ProQuest, etc.

Page 9: ISR Spotlight on Inter Library Loan Ted Harms & Wish Leonard Jan. 13, 2012

Tips for patrons…

we do not pass on any costs to the patron if an item has a prohibitive cost, we will inform patron and pass on all details we can request to renew items but that is up to the other library we cannot “post-to-web” articles…yet please use standard abbreviations – do not make up your own give us as much information as possible if all fails, use the ‘blank request form’
