1 - Origin of the demand for a new ISO/TC on the protection of biodiversity


• A statement :- The international recognition of the widespread

loss of biodiversity,- The need to accelerate the search for solutions for the preservation, restoration

and sustainable use of biodiversity,- The high dependency between our economies and biodiversity.

• No dedicated standardization work is being carried out as yet.

• A French proposal at ISO level: to develop and co-construct tools and methodologies, to encourage actions by sharing definitions and good practices.

• IPBES: Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

• FAO: The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture

Treaties, initiatives and publications in favor of the protection of biodiversity

BIODIVERSITY definitionAccording to Article 2 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), biodiversity ("Biological diversity") is:

… “ the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and

other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within

species, between species and of ecosystems”.

What is biodiversity ?


Standardization in the field of the protection of biodiversity to develop requirements, principles, framework, guidance and supporting tools in a

holistic and global approach for all relevant organizations, to enhance their contribution to

Sustainable Development.

Excluded: standardization of test and measurement methods for ecological quality of

water, air, soil and marine environment.


Scope proposal for the ISO/TC on biodiversity

• To develop a holistic and global approach of protection, recovery and sustainable use of biodiversity for organizations and communities.

• To take into account the interactions between the various issues of biodiversity: protection, recovery and sustainable use, in terms of their contribution to sustainable development

• To contribute to UN SDGs: SDG 13 “Climate action”, SDG 14 “Life below water”, SDG 15”Life on land”.

The creation of a new ISO/TC on the protection of biodiversity is approved


• ISO Consultation: from [2020-02-25] to [2020-05-19]

• Results of Voting on May 19, 2020:=> The TC is approved by 33 countries, disapproved by 5 countries and 8 abstentions.

• ISO TMB (Technical management Board) confirms the creation of ISO/TC 331 on June 26, 2020

Why a call for proposals ?• To take into account the comments made during the ISO vote on the

TC proposal and the discussions at the international level,• To receive new work items proposals by members,• To draw outlines for discussion at ISO/TC 331 level in view of the 1st

meeting of ISO/TC 331,• To anticipate on the work program of ISO/TC 331.


When and to whom ?• The call for proposals will be sent to ISO/TC

331 community from the beginning of November to the end of December 2020,

• P-Members are invited to address their proposals

• Initial work program proposal (February 2020),

• Comments received by countries during ISO consultation (May 2020),

• Discussions with stakeholders at international level.

A first draft for ISO/TC 331 work program

• Terminology : a need for clarification (ex: ecology, environment, ecosystem, ecosystem services, parameters, indicators, models, Nature-based solutions, rehabilitation, recovery, restoration, etc.),

• Assessment, conservation and valuation of biodiversity : considering plant and animal species in their habitats, ex: animal reserves (national parks), endemic species and genetic resources (ex: pharmacopoeia), cultivated biodiversity (replacing monoculture), etc.;

• Ecological restoration: based on ecological engineering methods, ex: buffer zones, ecological corridors, etc.;

• Integration of biodiversity issues in organizations. Companies and businesses are invited to take a closer look at the way they take biodiversity into account in their activities,

• Integration of biodiversity issues in the territories (communities): farming system, forest system, mountain environment, aquatic environments (sea, rivers, etc.), urban environment,

• Information, codification and access to the data : needs for reliable and robust data - users and suppliers of data.
