Iran’s supreme leader yes-terday banned the import

of American and British vaccines against Covid-19, saying they were “complete-ly untrustworthy”.

“Importing vaccines made in the US or the UK is prohibited,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a tweet, accompanied by the hashtag #CoronaVaccine.

“It’s not unlikely they would want to contaminate other nations,” he added.

The Islamic republic has reported more than 1.2 million cases of the novel coronavirus, which have caused over 56,000 deaths. While food and medicine are technically exempt from the measures, international banks tend to refuse trans-actions involving Iran.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said last month that Washington had de-manded that Tehran pay for the drugs through US banks, adding that he feared the United States would seize the money.

Rioters stormed the build-ing, overwhelming police and forcing authorities to transport lawmakers to secure locations for their own safety.

A Capitol police officer died from injuries sustained in the assault, the force said late on Thursday. A woman protester was fatally shot by the authori-ties, and three people died from medical emergencies.

With less than two weeks left in Trump’s term, it was not clear whether enough time remained to complete the impeachment process. Pelosi has not an-nounced a decision, though she made clear at a news conference that rank-and-file Democrats in her caucus were clamouring for action in the wake of Wednes-day’s siege.

If impeached in the House, Trump would theoretically face trial in the Republican-con-trolled Senate, which is sched-uled to be in recess until Jan. 19.

Aides to Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, have not said what he would do if the House approves articles of impeach-ment.

The Democratic-led House impeached Trump in December

2019 for pressuring the presi-dent of Ukraine to investigate Biden, but the Republican-held Senate acquitted him in Febru-ary 2020. Only two other presi-dents in history have been im-peached, and none has ever been

Air India Flight AI 1988 from Bahrain to Hyderabad departed yesterday from Bahrain International Airport with 151 passengers including two infants on board. The mission, now in its Phase 9, will operate 1,495 international flights from 24 countries. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, terming the outcomes of the 41st GCC Summit in Al-Ula as the “beginning of a new phase.”

The summit reflects the de-termination of their Majesties, highnesses and leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council na-tions in continuing the joint action, said Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

The minister was speaking with Editors-in-Chief of news-papers on the Al Ula declara-tion signed by the leaders of the six-nation GCC.

During the summit, Gulf lead-ers signed a “Solidary and stabil-

ity” agreement for ending the diplomatic rift with Qatar.

Al Zayani said the summit

strengthed collective action and addressed the challenges hindering the joint Gulf action.

On this note, he said the King-dom is proud to assume the GCC presidency and would stay com-mitted to promoting joint Gulf and Arab action.

The 41st GCC summit focused on creating economic unity, co-operation and a common mar-ket for food security, and rail lines between the GCC states, the minister added.

The minister further hailed the contributions of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khal-ifa, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in preserving the Gulf unity during difficult times. Al-Zayani expressed op-timism that the joint Gulf action will further strengthen the Gulf unity and heal the rift.

BTEA to dismantle Boeing 747, BACA posting guards at archaeological sites

Bahrain Tourism and Ex-hibitions Authority will soon dismantle its Boeing

747 aircraft, a Tender board doc-ument revealed.

The document said that BTEA is hiring “administrative and support service activities” for “aircraft dismantling and pro-cessing” in the Kingdom.

The tender placed for the work has also attracted two bidders.

Bahrain Maintenance and Div-ing Services’ BHD 224,500.000 emerged as the lowest bid. Air-craft Solutions Middle East, the other bidder, quoted BHD 330,950.000 for the job.

BTEA had earlier said that a rogue trawl-boat had destroyed its 70-meter long Boeing 747 submerged in the underwater park- Dive Bahrain.

The old jet, built in 1981, was the centrepiece of the eco-friendly park- dubbed the world’s largest. The park at-tracted divers, enthusiasts and researchers from all around the world. Since opening in August last year, over 500 divers had visited the place.

The aircraft, bought by Bah-rain from a Dubai-based airline, was submerged 30km away from the Amwaj Islands, off the north coast of Bahrain.

alongside the plane to boost the Kingdom’s eco-tourism sector. However, the sudden unexpect-ed incident and coronavirus pandemic brought the works to a standstill.

Of late, BTEA had said that it is planning to clear the debris and submerge yet another aircraft.

Interested parties, BTEA had said, should dismantle, process and equip a 747 aircraft to be used within the marine park.

The new development came as Bahrain’s Tender board, the independent regulatory body charged with overseeing gov-ernment tendering and bidding practices, opened 34 bids re-

ceived for tenders placed

by various governmental agen-cies.

To guard archaeological sitesOne of the tenders also re-

vealed that the Bahrain Author-ity for Culture and Antiquities is posting security guards at the authority and archaeological sites. The job attracted ten com-panies, and their bids ranged be-tween BHD 37,049.000 and BHD 1,478,515.500. Ismco company was the lowest bidder.

The board then opened two tenders by the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning. The first for the supply of manpower to road sector for 2020-2022 peri-od, received eight bids ranging from BHD 254,900.000 to BHD 419,121.840. Eastern Asphalt and Mixed Concrete company was the lowest bidder. The second tender for the operation and maintenance of a vacuum sew-age system in Busaiteen, Block 228, received a single bid of BHD 313,992.000 from Aqua technol-ogy transfer.

T h e c o m m i t t e e a l s o opened two tenders of the Electricity and Water Authority. The first was for the “procurement

of industrial workstations for ICS substations” and the second for air conditioning equipment maintenance. There was only a single bidder for the first work, while the second tender attract-ed six bidders.

Gulf AirIn the aviation sector, the

committee opened two tenders for Gulf Air. The first for ap-pointing a general sales agent for freight in Saudi Arabia received two bids and the second for pur-chasing bags for the hospitality crew also attracted two bids.

In the oil and gas sector, the board found a single bidder for purchasing remote fire control devices for the Bahrain Petrole-um Company (Bapco).

ATMs for BapcoFinally, the committee opened

a tender by Bapco Retail company for leasing and operating Au-tomatic Teller machines. The five-year con-tract was for placing ATMs

in Seef District, Central Market, Al-Saya, East Awa-

li and Al-Maameer. Bahrain Is-lamic Bank, which quoted BHD 101,470.000, was the sole bidder.

A Bahraini court yester-day fined a cafe and its directors BD2,000 and

BD1,000, respectively, for flout-ing COVID-19 precautionary measures.

The Public Health Directorate said the cafe failed to maintain required distance between ta-bles, or conduct temperature checks of customers.

The directorate also found that the cafe served Sheesha to its customers and exceeded the allowed five per cent capacity at each of its tables.

Authorities immediately shut

the cafe. As per mandatory health

measures, restaurants and coffee

shops should check the temper-atures of staff and customers using an infrared thermometer,

while denying entry to those with a temperature of 37.5°C or higher.

Public Prosecution referred the two accused to the Criminal Court, said the Chief Prosecutor of ministries and public insti-tutions.

In a similar ruling, a Bahrain court on Thursday awarded 74 defendants jail terms of three-months and above and fines be-tween BD 1000 and BD2000 for flouting coronavirus precaution-ary measures.

The court also ordered to de-port an expatriate.

Separately, the Ministry of In-dustry, Commerce and Tourism

shut 23 outlets for flouting pre-cautionary measures.

Meanwhile, officials assured that Inspection campaigns are continuing in full swing all across the Kingdom to detect COVID-19 violations to limit the spread of the deadly pandemic that has claimed over 350 lives in the Kingdom.

These campaigns aim at en-couraging citizens and residents to wear masks properly, follow social distancing measures and other precautionary measures mandated by the coordinating committee.

Authorities also guaran-teed stringent actions against

all those who fail to wear face masks.

Meanwhile, in an Al Amn Ra-dio interview, the Acting Head of the Community Police of the Capital Governorate Police Di-rectorate, Captain Sa’ad Nasser Al Hazani, highlighted several plans and programmes planned by his department to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

He said the multi-language awareness campaigns are for raising public awareness against the virus. Al Hazani said the General Directorate had distrib-uted 400 meals in Ramadan for those economically affected by the pandemic.

The project, launched as per the directives of His Royal High-ness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, forms part of the development projects in Al-Dair and Samaheej.

The development came as the minister discussed the project in detail with MP Dr Hesham Al Asheeri, Municipal Coun-cilor Fadhel Al Oud, Under-secretary for Municipal Affairs

Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa and Assistant Under-secretary for Joint Municipal

Services Shawqiya Humaidan.The project has a total area of

about 1,600 square meters and

features green spaces, play areas for children, and parking lots among other facilities.

The authorities will plant sev-eral types of flowering plants, shade trees and other plant va-

rieties in the garden. “A monument having a dis-

tinctive design will be devel-oped near Ain Rayaa in honour of people of the Al Dair and the Samaheej,” said the minister.

The project, minister said, aims at preserving the herit-age and historical values of the traditional and urban architec-ture and use them as a platform

Shaikh Mohammed was reply-ing to a parliamentary question by MP Ibrahim Al-Nafiei.

Shaikh Mohammed told Al Nafiei that all agencies should be ready to perform their trans-actions and render their services digitally.

The government, His High-ness said, is currently re-engi-neering and developing 120 of its services offered digitally.

“We will continue to imple-ment procedures and provide services at the same pace to ac-celerate and strengthen digital transformation strategy as we navigate through the pandemic,” the Deputy PM said.

Digital transformation is the process of using digital technol-ogies to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture, and customer experi-ences to meet changing busi-ness and market requirements. It transcends traditional roles like sales, marketing, and cus-tomer service.

Shaikh Mohammed assured that all government services meet the latest international practices. “This helps us to pro-vide speedy services and im-prove the performance of the government by complying with the latest international norms in digital transformation .”

Kuwait publishes entry norms • Entry by landport is for first-degree relatives

Bahrainis having first-degree relatives in Kuwait will be

permitted to enter the kingdom through land ports, tweeted the Embassy of Bahrain in Kuwait.

A first-degree relative is a family member who shares about 50 per cent of their genes with a particular individual in a family. First degree relatives in-clude parents, offspring, and siblings.

“All other have to enter the kingdom of Kuwait through the airport,” Bahrain embassy wrote.

The embassy also stressed that travellers should bring with them a certificate proving them as COVID-19 negative.

Certificates should not have been issued more than three days before the travel to enter

Kuwait through all ports. The land port will remain

open for travellers from 9 am

to 1 pm. Entry is for travellers who are a first-degree relative, the embassy said.


Granting CR for public sector employees!

Parliamentarians to vote on such a law in next session TDT | Manama

Members of the House of Representatives are plan-

ning to vote on a new law in its next session granting public sector employees commercial registration to run own busi-nesses.

As a norm, a full time and permanent government em-ployee cannot engage himself in a private business as a part-ner or as a part-time employee as it will generate a conflict of interest.

This, however, is going to change in the Kingdom, if the parliamentarians are voting yes to the new law.

The argument is that the law would help a public employ-ee boost his income in a world

troubled by the deadly corona-virus pandemic.

“The move is expected to di-versity the income source of public servants and allow them to overcome the economic im-pact of the outbreak.”

However, Bahrain’s Civil Service Bureau had warned the parliamentarians against confirming the law, saying, “it would produce a conflict of in-terest.”

Such a law that combines the government and private works may lead to indiscipline in the government official working hours, CSB pointed out.

“This will also reduce the chances of jobless citizens from grabbing an opportunity.”

“Accordingly, the employ-ees are not allowed to practise some activities in the private sector as of now,” the CSB state-ment added.

Bahrainis having first-degree relatives in Kuwait will be

permitted to enter the kingdom through land ports, tweeted the Embassy of Bahrain in Kuwait.

A first-degree relative is a family member who shares about 50 per cent of their genes with a particular individual in a family. First degree relatives in-clude parents, offspring, and siblings.

“All other have to enter the kingdom of Kuwait through the airport,” Bahrain embassy wrote.

The embassy also stressed that travellers should bring with them a certificate proving them as COVID-19 negative.

Certificates should not have been issued more than three days before the travel to enter

Kuwait through all ports. The land port will remain

open for travellers from 9 am

to 1 pm. Entry is for travellers who are a first-degree relative, the embassy said.

Members of the House of Representatives are plan-

ning to vote on a new law in its next session granting public sector employees commercial registration to run own busi-nesses.

As a norm, a full time and permanent government em-ployee cannot engage himself in a private business as a part-ner or as a part-time employee as it will generate a conflict of interest.

This, however, is going to change in the Kingdom, if the parliamentarians are voting yes to the new law.

The argument is that the law would help a public employ-ee boost his income in a world

troubled by the deadly corona-virus pandemic.

“The move is expected to di-versity the income source of public servants and allow them to overcome the economic im-pact of the outbreak.”

However, Bahrain’s Civil Service Bureau had warned the parliamentarians against confirming the law, saying, “it would produce a conflict of in-terest.”

Such a law that combines the government and private works may lead to indiscipline in the government official working hours, CSB pointed out.

“This will also reduce the chances of jobless citizens from grabbing an opportunity.”

“Accordingly, the employ-ees are not allowed to practise some activities in the private sector as of now,” the CSB state-ment added.

The week just ended had a lot of drama surrounding the incumbent US President’s defeat and aggressive supporters. The events shook the political system and

at least briefly, the world over, many doubted the long-term lifespan of democracy.

Better sense prevailed and all hailed democracy, a bit later.In financial markets, things are turning more surreal. The

dizzying rally in the global equities continued, pausing only for a moment even on the aftermath of a direct attack on the US Capitol.

But, listed equities are not even close to what Bitcoin has managed to do.

In the first week of 2021, the digital currency zoomed up 40 per cent to touch 40,000 dollars apiece. The total value of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency is now around 700 billion US$.

Another interesting news surrounds the continued surge in Tesla shares, crowning Elon Musk as the wealthiest person.

Of course, the world central banks have been ultra-dovish, pumping money supply to lift the economies out of the pan-demic induced stupor.

Democrats’ supremacy in the White House, the Senate and the Congress has almost confirmed another round of the US fiscal stimulus, a scenario priced in by the markets, even ignoring the Capitol’s recent riot. Today’s US December job numbers showed a decline of 140,000 jobs against an expec-tation of 71,000 more jobs but failed to dampen the equities’ bullish spirit. WTI oil prices also gained to trade near 52 dol-lars as investors cheered Saudi Arabia’s decision to reduce production by one million barrels a day in February and April.

The stimulus hopes are helping the markets ignore all the negatives surrounding the coronavirus induced lockdown and travel restrictions, economic downturn and deteriorating US-China relations.

Bitcoin jumped more than 5 per cent yesterday to fresh record highs of

$41,530, reversing losses from earlier in the session.

The world’s most popular digital currency slid to as low as $36,618.36 on Bitstamp ex-change before bouncing back. Rival cryptocurrency ethereum rose 3pc after sinking more than 10pc.

Bitcoin has rallied nearly 1,000pc since a low in March. It topped $30,000 for the first time on Jan. 2, after surpassing $20,000 on Dec. 16.

Some market participants had warned of a correction after the $40,000 milestone was reached,

but bitcoin was poised to regis-ter it’s 11th session of gains out of the last 12.

Increased demand from in-stitutional, corporate, and more recently retail investors has powered bitcoin’s surge, at-tracted by the prospect of quick gains in a world of ultra-low yields and negative interest rates.

“We are seeing a continued demand spike driven largely by sustained and unprecedented

institutional interest, showing no sign of abating as we move into 2021,” said Frank Spiteri of digital asset manager Coin-Shares.

JPMorgan strategists wrote on Jan. 5 that the digital cur-rency has emerged as a rival to gold and could trade as high as $146,000 if it becomes estab-lished as a safe-haven asset.

Interest in the world’s biggest cryptocurrency soared last year, with investors viewing bitcoin

as a hedge against inflation and an alternative to the depreciat-ing dollar.

Bank of America investment strategists on Friday said “vio-lent” inflationary price action in markets helped bitcoin’s rally in the last two months.

increase in demand after larger rival WhatsApp’s updated terms of service raised eyebrows on

‘Human remains’ find turned out to be a potato: UK police

A dog walker in northeast England sparked a large-

scale police search after re-porting suspected human re-mains in a muddy field. But the suspected grisly find turned out to be a potato, officers said yesterday.

Northumbria Police said specialist teams and sniffer dogs were sent to scour the field in the Winlaton area of Gateshead, after a concerned member of the public contact-ed them on Tuesday.

An accompanying pho-tograph sent to officers ap-peared to show a human foot, the force said on its Facebook page.

“Eventually we tracked down the ‘scene’ only to dis-cover the toe was in fact a po-tato with a mushroom growing next to it,” a spokesman said.

“We can only praise the vigilance of the woman who made the call and if anyone does come across suspected human remains, please do the same and give us a call.

“If it does turn out to be a vegetable, our police dogs will thank you for the treat!”

Tokyo fumes after South Korea court orders Japan to compensate ‘comfort women’Reuters | Tokyo

A South Korean court yester-day ordered Japan to com-

pensate 12 women who were forced to work in its wartime brothels, a ruling that drew a strong rebuke from Tokyo and threatened to rekindle a dip-lomatic feud between the two countries.

Reminders of Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean peninsula are contentious for both sides, with many surviving “comfort women” - a Japanese euphemism for the sex abuse victims - demanding Tokyo’s formal apology and compen-sation.

Japan says the issue was set-tled under a 1965 treaty that normalised diplomatic ties, and the two countries agreed to “ir-reversibly” end the dispute in a 2015 deal.

But the Seoul Central Dis-trict Court, a lower tier court, ordered Japan pay each of the women 100 million won ($91,000), saying neither of the pacts can cover their right to

manner in order to resolve the issue,” Nam told reporters after being called in.

After taking office in 2017, South Korean President Moon Jae-in effectively nullified the 2015 settlement, in which Japan issued an official apology and provided 1 billion yen ($9.6 mil-lion) to a fund to help comfort women victims.

Some historians estimate up to 200,000 Korean girls and women were forced to provide sex to Japanese troops during the colonial era, sometimes un-der the pretext of employment or to pay off a relative’s debt.

“It was a crime against hu-manity that was systematical-ly, deliberately and extensively committed by Japan in breach of international norms,” Jus-tice Kim Jeong-gon said in the ruling.

Almost 2.3 million people need aid in Ethiopia’s Tigray: UN report

opia’s northern Tigray re-gion and almost 2.3 million people, or nearly half of the population, need aid, a UN report said.

The report, the most comprehensive public as-sessment of the humanitar-ian situation in Tigray since conflict erupted there on Nov. 4, was posted online.

It said food supplies were very limited, looting was widespread and insecurity remained high.

Federal government troops are fighting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a political party that was governing the province. The gov-ernment declared victory in late November though the TPLF vowed to fight on.

Ethiopia’s National De-fence Force said late on Thursday that four senior TPLF members had been killed and nine arrested.

The state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation said yesterday that Sebhat Nega, a founding mem-ber of the TPLF, had also been captured. The TPLF could not be reached for comment.

The whereabouts of TPFL leader Debretsion Gebremi-chael, other members of the party’s central committee and many high-ranking former military officers re-mains unknown.

Thirteen civilians, eight of them children, died yesterday when

a woman suicide bomber blew herself up in a jihadist attack on a village in northern Cameroon, a traditional chief and a police officer said.

Cameroon’s Far North region is grappling with deadly incursions from neighbouring Nigeria, where an insurgency launched by Boko Haram in 2009 has killed tens of thousands of people.

Mahamat Chetima Abba, the traditional chief, or lamido, in the village of Mozogo, said the attackers arrived in the middle of the night, shouting “Allah Akbar” (“God is greater”) and brandishing machetes.

The government has said its studies show nearly 60% of resi-dents are willing to be vaccinat-ed. But the plans have stirred

rare hesitancy among some due to the low risk of infection in the island nation and concern about any possible side effects from

rapidly developed vaccines.“It will make us safer, and it

will make you and your loved ones safer too, so please take

it when you can,” Lee, 68, said after receiving the jab at a local hospital.

Singapore has only approved Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine but has said it has secured enough doses for its 5.7 million pop-ulation including from other vaccine-makers like Moderna and Sinovac.

The city-state did some initial vaccinations of frontline work-ers at the end of December. But Lee said broader vaccinations of healthcare staff would start yesterday, with the elderly to follow next month, and vaccines to be available to all residents by year end at the latest.

At least six people have died and nearly 50,000 evac-uated in Malaysia after

monsoon rains pounded the coun-try’s east coast, authorities said yesterday, causing what residents described as the worst flooding in half a century.

Authorities have stepped up rescue operations after locals complained they had to fend for themselves earlier this week.

Heavy rains continued to batter the region yesterday, swelling the number of people abandoning their homes to more than 47,000, officials said.

“I have lost everything. The wa-ter has covered my roof,” 59-year-old factory worker Tan Kong Leng told AFP, tears filling his eyes.

Floods hit the region during the rainy season every year and

regularly result in mass evacu-ations; but those in the affected areas say this year’s are the worst in decades.

Many roads, including the main expressway that links the east coast states, have been closed.

The worst-hit state is Pahang, where around 27,000 people have been evacuated in recent days, according to the social welfare department.

In one village in the state cut off by floods, residents were evacuat-ed in an excavator on Wednesday,

while others were forced to swim through deep waters.

Tan, the factory worker, and his wife took shelter at his plywood factory. They had just minutes to put their clothes in their car and flee to higher ground before the fast-rising waters engulfed their home.

“I am sad. All my fittings and fixtures are destroyed. My biggest fear is that more rain will pour in the coming days. Look! There are dark clouds moving in fast,” he said.

In one of the worst-hit districts in Pahang, residents complained that narrow and rubbish-filled drains contributed to the deluge.

Mentakab resident Muham-mad Fadzil Wahab said he and other locals have formed their own patrol units to prevent house break-ins.

“We scout the entire flooded village at night with our small boats and torch lights,” he told AFP.

“My family members are safe at the evacuation centres.”

Thursday evening, residents and a security source said.

The explosion took place just outside a central prison in the southern port city, they added.

The security source said the explosion happened in an empty area and damaged a wall.

Pictures posted on social media showed a plume of smoke that appeared to rise from area outside the prison.

S Korea unveils inflatable isolation ward for COVID-19 patients

South Korean researchers say they have designed an inflatable “negative

pressure” ward for isolating and treating patients with in-fectious diseases like COVID-19, after the pandemic exposed shortages of such beds around the world.

The rooms use a ventilation system that creates negative pressure to allow air to flow into the isolation room and be channelled out safely, helping prevent the spread of airborne pathogens.

They have become a vital tool for fighting the coronavi-rus pandemic, but many coun-tries have struggled to create them quickly enough.

The mobile clinic modules designed by a research team at the Korea Advanced Insti-tute of Science and Technol-ogy (KAIST) are large green-house-like inflatable tents, which the institute said cost a fifth of the price of building a conventional hospital ward.

Nam Tek-jin, an industrial design professor who led the KAIST team, says their tents, which are the size of a basket-ball court, can be installed and equipped in less than a day.

“At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, facilities for mild patients were not big a prob-lem, but we noticed that space for seriously ill patients was urgently in need as their con-dition would suddenly deteri-orate,” Nam told Reuters.

“We thought of developing a facility for not just isolation, but also treatment.”

The frames, panels, and lighting can be assembled on the spot to form a negative pressure room with a separate entry space and a shower pod in just 15 minutes, and it takes less than 24 hours to set up the entire air tent with four such rooms, he said.

The rooms are also equipped with panels that allow medi-cal workers to provide aid or pass things like food without having to enter the room and avoiding burn out from wear-ing cumbersome gear, said Cho Min-su, a director at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences.

Nam said the units are ready for mass production, but no customers have been an-nounced yet.

to visit her amid the birth of her first child.

The ‘American Horror Story’ star and her boyfriend Garrett Hedlund became first time par-ents when they welcomed their son Rhodes on December 27, and to keep their baby safe amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the couple have put strict quar-

antine rules in place before family members can see the new arrival.

A source said: “[They are] try-ing to keep the news of her giving birth super low-key and under the radar.

“They barely told any of their friends and have mainly been re-lying on their respective families. They have in-house help that is teaching them and helping them out while they’re adjusting, but they are being very strict about quarantining and having visitors and guests.”

Emma and Garrett are keen to “fully enjoy and embrace this mo-ment as a couple”, and reportedly haven’t even been accepting baby shower gifts.

The insider added to ‘Entertain-ment Tonight’: “They’re not even fully accepting presents at the mo-ment. Of course, if someone sends them something, they will, but they aren’t asking for anything.”

Rhodes was born in Los Angeles and reportedly weighed around nine pounds, according to reports published at the time of his birth.

Emma, 29, previously admitted she was finding it “a wild expe-rience” being pregnant in lock-down.

She said: “That’s become such a loaded question in 2020. Long story short: I am hungry and tired. Food and sleep do not abide by the normal laws when you’re preg-nant. She said: “It’s been really an interesting time in the world to be pregnant right now. It’s definitely caused a lot of introspection, but I think it’s been amazing to really sit with myself and really turn in-ward in a way I never have before and be still. That’s been really nice, and I feel really grateful to have gotten to do that. To not just be running from one appointment to the next or one job to the next. I’ve really had to be present with myself, and that’s been - some days you wanna crawl out of your skin, but other days you feel really good and really grateful.”

to visit her amid the birth of her first child.

The ‘American Horror Story’ star and her boyfriend Garrett Hedlund became first time par-ents when they welcomed their son Rhodes on December 27, and to keep their baby safe amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the couple have put strict quar-

antine rules in place before family members can see the new arrival.

A source said: “[They are] try-ing to keep the news of her giving birth super low-key and under the radar.

“They barely told any of their friends and have mainly been re-lying on their respective families. They have in-house help that is teaching them and helping them out while they’re adjusting, but they are being very strict about quarantining and having visitors and guests.”

Emma and Garrett are keen to “fully enjoy and embrace this mo-ment as a couple”, and reportedly haven’t even been accepting baby shower gifts.

The insider added to ‘Entertain-ment Tonight’: “They’re not even fully accepting presents at the mo-ment. Of course, if someone sends them something, they will, but they aren’t asking for anything.”

Rhodes was born in Los Angeles and reportedly weighed around nine pounds, according to reports published at the time of his birth.

15-year-old sensation opened her campaign by capturing the Australian Open Junior Girls doubles title with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho while also barging into the French Open Junior Girls singles sem-ifinal.

She is now No. 2 in the girls’ world rankings.

It was a historic achievement for the country. Eala is the first Filipina to reach the semifi-nals in singles of a junior Grand Slam in 35 years, following Felix Barrientos, who was a finalist in the 1985 Wimbledon juniors tournament.

In October last year, she also achieved a career-high ranking of No. 2 in the ITF.

Eala expressed her pride rep-resenting the Philippines and doing well, saying: “I feel that reflects well on the nation and shows how hard we work. The Filipinos are very underrated, so to be able to add to their sta-tus is good.”

She has already returned to Spain to resume her training as part of her long-term career goal.

During the regular season last year, Eala stayed in Mallorca as a scholar in the Rafael Nadal Academy.

The academy is the former training ground of Nadal him-self. It combines tennis and ed-ucation so that the students and aspiring athletes can continue to build their tennis careers without sacrificing their aca-demic studies.

The country’s top junior tennis player spent the holi-days with her family but still continued with her training regimen upon the online guid-ance of her coaches in Spain to keep her in top shape for the season.

Eala said she has been spend-

ing five hours a day training in the hard court at a subdivision in Pasig based from the mod-ules that her coaches from the academy are sending.

In the coming months, Eala is competing in big women’s

tournaments. Ranked No. 3 in the Inter-

national Tennis Federation (ITF) juniors, Eala looks to join two to three $15,000 women’s tournaments starting Jan. 18 to beef up her goal of eclipsing her most successful season so far last 2020.

But her focus now is improv-ing her performances in the women’s tournaments after joining only five events last year where she made it past the second round on three of those events.

Eala is the niece of former sports commentator and Phil-ippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala, who served as the pro bas-ketball league’s commission-er from 2003-2005. Her mom Rizza’s sister is a former nation-al swimmer while her broth-er is a swimmer-turned-ten-nis-player for the University of the Philippines (UP) tennis varsity.

Bahraini-British racing team 2 Seas Motorsport captured pole position

yesterday for today’s Gulf 12 Hours Bahrain, which was being held for the first time at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).

Ben Barnicoat steered the team’s #33 McLaren 720S GT3 to the leading grid spot with the best average lap time of one min-ute 59.716 seconds during qual-ifying around BIC’s 5.412-kilo-metre track.

Barnicoat and teammates His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Martin Kodric went into quakifying’s final

part, trailing the team’s sister #7 McLaren on the average times.

But Barnicoat’s stellar first quick lap, seven-tenths of a sec-ond quicker than that of Por-sche Supercup runner-up Dylan Pereira, ensured that both the team’s cars would start from the

front.“What set us up for such a

good qualifying was that HH Shaikh Isa did such a strong job in the first session,” Barnicoat was quoted as saying on the event’s official website.

“From that moment, it filled

all three drivers with confidence because it’s HH Shaikh Isa’s first race in GT3, and his first race with 2 Seas. He took it in his stride and was only one-tenth of a second behind Ed [Jones, in the sister #33 car].

“From that moment, Martin

and I looked at each other and felt that we were in the mix for pole position.

Earlier yesterday, 2 Seas’ two cars took turns topping the timesheet in the day’s practice sessions.

Their #33 McLaren 720S GT3 led the third and final Free Practice session, with McLar-en factory driver Ben Barnicoat quickest. He set the fastest time 2:00.506.

Barnicoat was eight-tenths of a second ahead of the #8 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 Pro-Am entry driven by Nicola Cadei. The #27 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 Am car of David Fuma-nelli was third.

In the second practice, leading the field was the #7 McLaren 720S GT3 of Ed Jones, who took to the front ahead of the sister #33 McLaren of HH Shaikh Isa.

In a session that was mostly used to practice pit stops and driver changes, Jones, in his first taste of McLaren machinery, set the quickest time of 2:01.267, less than two-tenths of a second quicker than 2 Seas co-owner HH Shaikh Isa.

The #3 RAM Racing Mercedes AMG GT3 of Callum Macleod led the opening Free Practice session of the weekend.

What set us up for such a good qualifying was that HH Shaikh Isa did

narrow victories last night in the fifth week of action of the 2020/2021 Nasser bin Ham-ad Bahrain Premier Football League.

Manama triumphed against Al Malkiya 1-0. Scoring for the victors in the 64th minute was Mahdi Abduljabbar, who tapped the ball in from close range off a cross from the left flank.

Manama claimed their third win to improve to 10 points while Malkiya suffered their fourth loss to stay on one point at the bottom of the league table.

Meanwhile, Al Najma beat Busaiteen 1-0 with a late winner. Ali Khalil was the goal-scorer. He found the net with just 10 minutes left in reg-ular time, scoring from close range with a header.

It was the first win for Na-jma in five matches and they improved to five points. Bu-saiteen suffered their third loss and stayed on four points.

Prince Trial), which headlined yester-day’s races at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC).

In attendance at yesterday’s events were His Majesty the King’s Hu-manitarian Work and Youth Affairs representative and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and REHC deputy chairman His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa along with other high-ranking officials.

David Egan saddled the six-year-old, 113-rated winner to first place for own-ers Victorious and trainer Fawzi Nass in a total time of one minute 47.483 seconds over the event’s nine-furlong distance.

The result earned them the largest stake in the BD8,000 total prize.

Medal Winner was the runner-up

Race five over seven furlongs with a BD2,000 prize was won by Byline for Al Adiyat Racing and Alan Smith. Gerald Mosse saddled the winner to a 1:23.226 finish to lift the REHC Cup. Al Fajir Mukbile was second a length back, while Prince Elzaam rounded out the top three.

The day’s fourth race was for the HH

Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup, held over sev-en furlongs with a BD2,000 prize, and Pont Vert was the winner in 1:24.495. The Jassim Mohammed Asad-owned, Ramzi Al Baqlawa-trained horse was ridden by Ben Sanderson.

Jamais Assez and Forbidden Land finished second and third, respectively.

The third event for the HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup (Oaks Trail) was won by Waseela for KHK Racing, Hesham Al Haddad and David Egan. It was an eight-furlong race with a BD2,000 prize.

Waseela finished ahead of Baltis Daughter and Ramiyaat.

Elsewhere yesterday, Sadara won the HH Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa Cup in race two for HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Abdulla Faisal; while Kuheilan Afas 1708 kicked off yesterday’s action by winning the HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for Victori-ous, Yousif Taher and Paddy Mathers.

Bahrain Raid Xtreme (BRX) is announced its full suite

of technical partners as it be-gins the first stages of the Dakar Rally 2021 – one of the toughest sporting events in the world.

BRX Official Technical Part-ners include; Sparco, Akrapovic, MakerBot and DSM, each part-ner playing a vital role in en-suring the BRX cars, drivers and team are ready to compete in one of sport’s biggest tests of endurance. Together, BRX and its Technical Partners will nego-tiate the extreme conditions of the Saudi Arabian desert over a 7,646km (4,751mile) race.

BRX’s driver line-up includes nine-time World Rally Champi-on, Sebastien Loeb, from France, and two-time Dakar Rally win-ner, Nani Roma, from Spain.

Sparco, like Prodrive-led BRX, have strong experience in mot-orsport and have been partner-ing with elite motorsport teams for over 40 years. The Italian auto part and accessory com-pany specialise in producing technical racing items and will provide BRX with all race-ready equipment to be worn by drivers and mechanics, including; seats, belts, driver suits and the brand new shoes “ X-light+ “ with car-bon fibre inter sole.

Akrapovic is a market-leading manufacturer of premium ex-

haust systems for motorcycles and performance cars. It is a pioneer in the innovative use of super-alloys and at the forefront of carbon components. As a BRX Technical Partner, Akrapovic have developed a bespoke ex-haust in collaboration with Prodrive to support Hunter as it embarks on unprecedented terrain in the Dakar.

MakerBot, a Stratasys com-pany, is a global leader in the 3D printing industry. As a BRX Technical Partner, MakerBot will provide crucial parts for Hunter – both during races, as

well as at BRX headquarters in Banbury UK.

Royal DSM is a global, pur-pose-led, science-based com-pany active in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living. As a BRX Technical Partner, DSM will sup-port with high performance en-gineering 3D printing materials and applications consultancy. During the Dakar, they will offer expert advice as to which com-ponents should be printed and what material is best suited for each scenario.
