LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear friends,

When I was appointed Board Chair two years ago, I was fully aware of the challenges facing this great organization. At the ISO, we have a responsibility to inspire, entertain, educate, and challenge our community through our music. To do this, we need strong artistic leadership, musicians of the highest artistic level, strong philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations, enthusiastic patrons to �ll the seats of ourconcert halls, and a strong and committed board and sta�.

The 2015-16 season showed that the ISO continues to excel at serving its constituents. We experienced many artistic highlights, including the Opening Night Gala with Joshua Bell, the Cosmos Festival, IPL Yuletide Celebration, the semi-staged production of Carmen, and Marsh Symphony on the Prairie. For the fourth consecutive year, thecommunity contributed over $9 million to support the ISO’s operations. And our ticket sales were at an all-time high and 15% higher than last year.

Even with these accomplishments, the �scal year ended with an operating loss, due largely to signi�cant increases in health care costs and weather at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie, both out of the Society’s control. Despite this loss, I am extremely optimistic about what is ahead for the ISO and am con�dent that we have plans in place to continue to operate within our means. Recently, the ISO and our musicians agreed on a new three-year collective bargaining agreement more than a year in advance of the current contract’s expiration, sending a clear message to our community that we have moved beyond the troubles of the past. The new season is o� to a strong start and we project another record-breaking year for ticket sales. A $10 million �nancial stability grant awarded by the Lilly Endowment last December has put the ISO on more stable �nancial footing for years to come. And as I pass on the gavel to incoming ISO Board Chair and community leader Yvonne Shaheen, I know that she, along with the board and sta�, will continue to provide the hard work and dedication needed to keep the ISO strong for future years.

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your Board Chair, and I am highly con�dent that the ISO is poised to continue contributing to the artistic vitality of our community and doing so in a �scally responsible manner.

During the 2015-16 season, the ISO welcomed �ve new musicians: Austin Huntington, Principal Cello; Peter Vickery, Assistant Concertmaster;

Samuel Rothstein, Assistant Principal Clarinet/Bass Clarinet; Michael Muszynski, Second Bassoon; and Pedro Fernandez, Percussion.

At the end of the season, the ISO awarded violist Beverly Scott the Patch Award for his extraordinary service to the orchestra. The ISO also recognized

the retirement of violist Nancy Agres after 29 years of service.

The mission of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is to

INSPIRE, ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE, and CHALLENGE

through innovative programs and symphonic music performed at the highest artistic level.

The 2015-16 season started on a high note with the sold out Opening Night Gala presented by the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation. Krzysztof Urbański led the ISO in a program inspired by

Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The performance included excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, plus the West Side Story Suite, performed by Indiana’s own star violinist Joshua Bell. Time for Three joined on stage for an exhilarating �nale of Death by Triple Fiddle. Under the

leadership of committee chairs Yvonne Shaheen and Joe and Susan Bentley, the ISO raised $158,000.

ISO Conductor Laureate Raymond Leppard led his �nal performance of Classical Christmas, presented by the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, on December 12 at the Howard L.

Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University.

The Stella Artois Happy Hour at the Symphony continued for its 11th season with four concerts attracting over 550 new households to the ISO. Concerts

featured various acts including Artists-in-Residence Time for Three, singer/song-writer Aoife O’Donovan, and Pink Martini, in addition to new mashups composed

by conductor Steve Hackman.

The ISO presented its 32nd Celebration of Black History concert on February 9. Maestro Chelsea Tipton led the musical celebration

with masterworks by composers Michael Abels and Verdi and J. Rosamond Johnson, plus Barber’s stirring Adagio for Strings with accompanying narration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a

Dream” speech by guest narrator King Ro Conley. Also appearing as a special guest soloist was 17-year-old violin virtuoso Adé

Williams, the 2012 First Place Laureate of the Sphinx Competition. Celebration of Black History was presented by

The Indianapolis Recorder.

In June, the ISO performed the Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Concert to thank volunteers and donors, in addition to recognizing

Over the 2015-16 season, 823 volunteers contributed 23,988 total volunteer hours to make our concerts and special events happen.

To close the indoor season, the Hilbert Circle Theatre was transformed into an opera house for the

special production of Carmen, one of the world’s most performed and favorite operas by French composer Georges

Bizet. Led by Krzysztof Urbański, the opera featured Metropolitan Opera soprano Oksana Volkova in the title role. Carmen was presented by Randall & Deborah Tobias and The

Margot L. and Robert S. Eccles Fund, a fund of CICF.

“ Time for Three in Concert,” an

Circle Theatre in collaboration with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra,

Universal Music Classics, and WFYI Public Media, aired March 25 on PBS stations

nationwide.

The Fifth Third Bank Lunch Break Series continued for its third year, providing six

concert, featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and the second movement of Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony,

was made free and open to the public in remembrance of the victims of the

Orlando tragedy.

INSPIRE

In tribute to the 30th anniversary of the �lm, the ISO went “back in time” with a special screening of the 1985 �lm classic, Back to the Future, complete with full orchestra and even a few DeLoreans. This concert attracted 325 new households-

the most in a single concert on the season.

For the �rst time, the ISO threw the ultimate Halloween masquerade ball, Haunted Hilbert, presented by Indiana Members Credit Union. The event included food, drink, DJs,

dancing, and special performances by ISO musicians. Money raised from the event helped fund ISO

education programs.

Broadway and television star Kristin Chenoweth made her ISO debut

alongside Jack Everly in November to a sold-out audience performing favorites like “Moon River,” “I Could’ve Danced All

Night,” and a special surprise perfor-mance of “For Good” with IPL Yuletide

Celebration host Sandi Patty.

ENTERTAIN

IPL Yuletide Celebration celebrated 30 years with host Sandi Patty and Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly. Attendance and sales hit a record high with

nearly 98% of the seats �lled for all 26 performances.

Singers Tony Desare, Liz Callaway, and Frankie Moreno joined Jack Everly for four sold-out

performances of the ISO’s Sinatra Centennial celebration over Valentine’s weekend. Sinatra

Centennial was presented as a part of the Printing Partners Pops Series.

Rain? What rain? Even with 11 of 28 performances a�ected by weather, the ISO had record ticket sales for its 35th

Marsh Symphony on the Prairie season and over 111,000 in attendance. New this year was the ISO Sunset Lounge,

presented by Terry Lee Genesis and Terry Lee Hyundai. The season featured a wide variety of music including Gershwin, Mozart, Toto, The Temptations, Music of Michael Jackson and

Neil Diamond, and the beloved movie music of John Williams.

ENTERTAIN

The Teddy Bear Series presented by Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield continued in its second year, performing 10 programs in four di�erent venues. Geared toward

young children ages 3-6, the series began in 2014 with The Giant's Violin, a children’s story written by ISO violinist Vicki Griswold. The Big Note, also written by Griswold,

was added to the series this year. This story invites young children to move like trains and sway like trees as they participate in the adventure-�lled story of a young

boy’s search through a symphony orchestra to �nd the big note. The ISO Teddy Bear Series is underwritten by friends of Ava Button.

The ISO introduced Classical Jam which allows adult musicians the opportunity to play alongside ISO musicians. Associate conductor Vince

Lee led rehearsal with guests and ISO members playing side by side. Musicians and guests then had a rehearsal break and were able to mix

and mingle before returning to the Hilbert Circle Theatre stage for a casual performance.

Over 17,000 students attended the ISO’s Discovery Concerts in the winter and spring of 2016. This was the �rst year the ISO introduced the “Link Up”

program, a nationally recognized curriculum by Carnegie Hall, where students were invited to actively participate in the form of singing and playing the

recorder along with the orchestra.

EDUCATE

This year, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, presented by Roche, celebrated 20 years of engaging Indianapolis-area students and their families through low cost music education and free performances while also providing

the positive role models, mentoring and college awareness, and the family support services necessary for students’ long-term personal success.

The MYO program was founded in 1995 by Betty Perry, a classically trained musician who received her start in the renowned Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City. This experience fostered both Perry’s love of music and her passionate belief that music can transform lives, especially for those families with limited economic means.

Former MYO student, Krystle Ford, joined the MYO faculty as Associate Director.

Founder and artistic director Betty Perry was recognized by the Jordan College of the Arts with a 2016 Legacy Award.

The 20th Anniversary Celebration concluded with the Jazz and Jam concert on April 10. At that time, Mayor Joe Hogsett made the mayoral proclamation that April 10, 2016 was Betty Perry Day.

Over $450,000 was raised for the MYO programs this year, including a title sponsorship from Roche Diagnostics.

During the mid-winter Cosmos Music Festival, the ISO took audiences on a celestial ride through three weekends of great masterworks

including Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, The Planets. The festival spanned over three weeks and had 7,847 patrons in attendance to six Lilly Evening Classical performances, reaching 85% paid capacity for the entirety of the

festival and attracted 648 new households.

CHALLENGE

The festival included events throughout the three weeks like a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey at the IMAX at the Indiana State Museum, in addition

to pre-concert events including a presentation by former astronaut and current Children’s Museum of Indianapolis scientist-in-residence Dr. David

Wolf.

Community partners of the festival included the Indiana State Museum, the Link Observatory Space Science Institute, Science Central, Indiana

University, Purdue University, Barron Hilton Flight and Space Exploration Archives at Purdue University Libraries, the Children’s Museum of

Indianapolis, the IMAX, Indy CD & Vinyl, and Sun King Brewery.

Through the ISO’s Side-by-Side program, 59 high school students from all over Central Indiana won the audition to perform alongside their orchestra counterparts at the annual Side-by-Side concert in March. The ISO

also took this opportunity to not only showcase students but thank students by making this a Student Appreciation Concert. In the 2015-16 season, the ISO had a record high of over 9,300 student tickets sold to

concerts, and more than 70% of those students attended Classical series performances.

CHALLENGE

The ISO and Time for Three produced the new INfusion Music Fest in the spring that celebrated the connections between music and the environment. The weekend

featured modern orchestral compositions and special appearances by notable indie artists San Fermin, Kishi Bashi, and Ben Folds. In addition, the fest featured

presentations, panel discussions, a trivia game, and short �lms presented by local environmental heavyweights—Christian Theological Seminary, Earth Charter Indiana, Hoosier Environmental Council, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Indianapolis Zoo, Indiana

Forest Alliance, and IndyGo.

For INfusion, no programs were printed but distributed electronically, and all banners were recycled and made into

bags and wallets by People for Urban Progress. INfusion Music Fest was generously supported by the Efroymson

Family Fund, Ann M. & Chris Stack, Eli Lilly & Company, The Lacy Foundation, and an anonymous donor. More than 1,700 were in attendance including 274 new households who had

never attended an ISO event.

The Fund’s founder Dr. George H.A. Clowes served on the ISO board during its infancy. As president, he was an ardent fundraiser for the cause. As reported in the recently published biography, The Doc and the Duchess: The Life and Legacy of George H. A. Clowes, in 1945 he wrote, “We shall pull the orchestra through this year and next, but only at very great cost and sacri�ce on the part of those who are really interested in keeping it alive.”

MYO aligns with the Fund’s current interests in social justice and equity, in this case, music education for low income urban students and their families. S U C C E S S B Y T H E N U M B E R S L E T T E R F R O M T H E T R E A S U R E RFiscal year 2016 (FY16) continued to build upon many of the �nancial successes the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) has achieved over the past four years. The ISO saw a signi�cant increase in earned income, mainly due to strong ticket sales and attendance growth, and also saw an increase in contributions over the prior year. Despite strong earned and contributed revenue growth, the �scal year ended with an operating loss of $561K, due largely to signi�cant increases in health care costs and inclement weather at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie, two factors out of the Society’s control. This marks the �rst operating loss in four years, and the Board and executive leadership are committed to returning the institution to a balanced budget in FY17.

Total general operating revenues from FY16 increased 6.2% over the previous year, primarily due to a 15% growth in total ticket sales, making this year an all-time record in overall ticket sales. Season subscription ticket sales increased slightly over FY15, and IPL Yuletide Celebration achieved record-setting sales. Revenues from Marsh Symphony on the Prairie fell short of goal due to an unusually high number of performances a�ected by weather. Eleven of 28 performances this summer were impacted by rain or extreme heat. That said, total revenues from this summer’s Marsh Symphony on the Prairie season were higher than any other season since the series began 35 years ago.

The ISO also had another successful fundraising year in FY16 with $9.3 million in contributions, surpassing the $9.25 million raised in FY15. This marks the fourth consecutive �scal year with contributed income exceeding $9.0 million, signi�cantly higher than any previous year in the history of the ISO. This level of fundraising could not have been achieved without continued strong community support, and we are extremely grateful to the thousands of individuals, corporations and foundations who have invested in the ISO.

The ISO’s endowment draw for the �scal year included $4.5 million, or 5%, for operations, plus an additional $1.0 million for cash contribution to the de�ned bene�t pension plan, for a total draw of 6.1%. The ISO’s balance sheet was also strengthened signi�cantly by the special $10 million grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., $8 million of which was used to address the unfunded liability of the de�ned bene�t pension plan, with the remaining $2 million being invested in several strategic initiatives.

The operating loss of $561K reported in FY16 was mainly due to the unanticipated $854K increase in medical claims expense over the prior year. The ISO is self-insured for its medical bene�t plans with stop-loss insurance coverage to mitigate the impact of medical claims above certain levels. Despite aggressive expense control measures implemented by management early in FY16, the 78% increase in medical claims over the previous year was too large of an increase to overcome.

In July 2016, Management and the Musicians reached agreement on a new 3-year collective bargaining agreement (CBA) more than a year in advance of the expiration of the current 5-year CBA. The new CBA includes wage increases, work rules modi�cations and an increase in the cost share by participants of the ISO’s health insurance plan.

The ISO Board of Directors is committed to ensuring that the institution continues to present the highest quality performances and programs while remaining on sound �nancial footing for many years to come. Despite the speci�c challenge regarding the medical claims issue and unusually poor weather at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie experienced in FY16, the overall results of the past �scal year show that we continue on our path towards this goal.

As I complete my second year as Treasurer, I want to thank the many people who work so diligently to deliver the �nancial oversight to ensure the ongoing success of this great institution and would like to speci�cally acknowledge the work of the �nance sta� and Finance Committee of the Board.
