OPERATION:A thermostatic element senses ambient temperature

and if this falls below 40°F (4.4°C) the valve modulates

open allowing water to flow by the sensor. The valve

will remain open as long as the water flowing by the

sensor is less than 40°F (4.4°C). However, when the

water flowing by the sensor becomes greater than

40°F (4.4°C) the valve will close. The valve is fully

open at 35°F (2°C).

APPLICATIONS:HAT/FP (Freeze Protection) valves are ideal forprotection of piping, valves, fittings, pumps, condensatesystems, safety showers, fire lines, spray nozzles,freeze sensitive equipment, or as backup protectionon traced systems/equipment. The "AA" model isrecommended for draining condensate fromcompressed air systems.

ADVANTAGES:Typically freeze protection is effected by crackingopen manual bleed valves. This method is at bestrisky. Human error or plugging of partially crackedvalves annually accounts for large amounts of freezedamage to expensive equipment. HAT/FP valveseliminate this type of problem by automating freezeprotection, reducing water consumption, andeliminating damage and down time. The unique ram-type plug and seat provide reliable, tight shutoff longerthan any other design available. All HAT/FP valvesare 100% factory-tested and covered by a 36 monthprorated warranty.

OPERATION:

Under normal operating conditions, water passesthrough a virtually unobstructed 1" NPT-F or larger teebody, allowing this valve to be used in higher flowlines. When the fluid temperature approaches freezing,and freeze damage is imminent, the thermal actuatorlocated in the fluid stream modulates the valve open.When the makeup water temperature returns to thesafe range, the valve then modulates closed, reducingwaste water losses. Due to the actuator’s placementin the fluid stream, this valve is unaffected by ambientair temperature, and opens only when the water is indanger of freezing, being fully open at 35°F (2°C), andfully closed at 40°F (4.4°C).

OPERATION:

The FPP may be though of as an automaticfreeze-out plug with one important difference:The stainless steel FPP cartridge releases itselffrom its body at a pre-set water temperature,rather than being forced out by the tremendouspressure of expanding ice. This provides almosta full one inch bore to rapidly drain a coolingsystem before damage can occur. Resetting andrearming the FPP prior to refilling the system iseasily accomplished by simply reheating thecartridge and utilizing the slotted actuator feature.With the unique built-in check valve (on Models Tand FL only), it's possible to replace the entire FPPwithout draining the system.

OPERATION:When the water temperature rises above safelimits, and a danger of scalding exists, the thermalactuator modulates the valve open. A small sampleof the water from the pipe system then flows pastthe sensor. If the water is above the acceptablerange, the valve will continue to modulate openuntil the overtemperature water is eliminated.When the makeup water temperature returns tothe safe range, the valve then modulates closed,reducing waste water losses. The HAT/SP opensonly when the water exceeds safe limits. TheHAT/SP-105 is full open at 105°F and remainsopen until water temperature is 95°F or below.The HAT/SP-115 is full open at 115°F and closedat 105°F and below.

APPLICATIONS:Solar radiation or overheating caused by steam orelectric tracing can cause extremely hightemperatures at the point of use, resulting in asafety hazard for plant personnel. When installed insafety showers, eyewash stations, and otherlocations exposed to the same source ofoverheating as the system, the HAT/SP will beheated just as the pipe system. The valve will opento establish flow until the overtemperature water iseliminated and it will then modulate closed.

ADVANTAGES:The HAT/SP valve continually senses andautomatically bleeds excessively hot water fromsafety shower/eyewash systems. Protection isprovided with minimal water consumption. Theunique plug and seat design offers the mostreliable, tight shutoff available. All HAT/SP valvesare 100% factory tested and covered by a 36month prorated warranty.

OPERATION:Under normal operating conditions, water passesthrough a virtually unobstructed 1" or larger NPT tee,allowing this valve to be used in higher flow lines.When the water temperature rises above safe limits,and a danger of scalding exists, the thermal actuatorlocated in the fluid stream modulates the valve open.When the water temperature returns to the saferange, the valve then modulates closed, minimizingwater loss. Due to the actuator’s placement in the fluidstream this valve is unaffected by ambient airtemperature and is full open at 105°F(41°C) and willremain open until water temperature is 95°F(35°C) orbelow.

APPLICATIONS:Solar heating of piping systems can cause extremelyhigh temperatures at the point of use resulting in asafety hazard for plant personnel. When installed insafety showers, eyewash stations, and other sensitivelocations, the IC/SP-T (reverse acting) valve will opento establish flow until the overtemperature water iseliminated and then modulate closed.

OPERATION:

The HAT valve responds only to temperature. Aftercondensate forms and cools to near the setpoint, theHAT valve modulates the flow to maintain a constantcondensate discharge temperature. HAT valves arewide open at start-up for rapid venting and initial heat-up. HAT valves are self-draining after shutdown, toeliminate freeze damage. Typical setpoints include105, 125, 180, 210, and 240°F (41, 52, 82, 99, 116°C).

APPLICATIONS:

Therm-O-Tech HAT (Heat Actuated Trap) valves areideal for replacing conventional steam traps onwinterization tracing, instrument tracing, condensatereturn system freeze protection, tracing for processesunder 150°F (65°C), and other applications requiringin-line flow control based on temperature.

OPERATION:When a liquid temperature rises above desiredlimits, and a danger of overheating a processexists, the thermal actuator modulates the valveopen. A small sample of the liquid from thesystem then flows past the sensor. If the liquid isabove the acceptable range, the valve will continueto modulate open until the overtemperature liquidis eliminated. When the makeup liquidtemperature returns to the safe range, the valvethen modulates closed, reducing waste. TheHAT/RA opens only when the liquid exceeds thedesired limits.

APPLICATIONS:The model HAT/RA reverse acting valve can beused to regulate the flow of glycol, water or othermedia, in critical applications or to economicallyremove heat from equipment or a process.

OPERATION:The HAT/RA-LP is installed on the cooling water outletof the equipment as an afterflow controller. OPERATION:The TV/HAT/RA-LP is installed on the cooling wateroutlet of the equipment as an afterflow controller. Atstart-up, the valve is closed except for the “controlleakage”, which allows a small amount of flow so thatthe actuator inside the valve can sense the changingequipment temperature. As the outlet watertemperature increases to within the operating rangeof the TV/HAT/RA-LP , the thermal actuator modulatesthe valve open. If the cooling water temperature isabove the acceptable range, the valve will continue tomodulate open allowing additional cooling flow. As theoutlet water temperature falls slightly, the valve thenmodulates toward the closed position, reducing flow.This modulating action maintains a relatively constantoutlet water temperature even as the cooling loadchanges.

OPERATIONThe Valve Engine responds only to temperaturechange, and is unaffected by operating pressure. Thevalve will proportionally vary flow rate with temperaturein a repeatable, precise manner.The ìValve Engineî is essentially a complete operatinginternal assembly for a self - operating temperatureactuated valve. The assembly includes everythingexcept the valve body. This compact, economicaldesign lends itself to simple integration into manykinds of equipment and devices.The heart of the engine is a solid-to-liquid phasechange thermal actuator. The actuator contains aThermoloidÆ compound which changes phase froma solid to a liquid as the temperature increases. Asthe phase change occurs, the volume of theThermoloidÆ material changes significantly, with theliquid volume greater than the solid volume. Since theThermoloidÆ is essentially incompressible undernormal operating loads and it is sealed into a rigidactuator housing, only a piston can move and extendas the volume increases.

This motion is used to open and close the valve.

ThermoloidÆ compounds are available in manytemperature ranges to cover most applications.

OPERATION:When a liquid temperature rises above desiredlimits, and a danger of overheating a processexists, the thermal actuator modulates the valveopen. A small sample of the liquid from the systemthen flows past the sensor. If the liquid is above theacceptable range, the valve will continue tomodulate open until the overtemperature liquid iseliminated. When the makeup liquid temperaturereturns to the safe range, the valve then modulatesclosed, reducing waste. The ECONO/HAT/RAopens only when the liquid exceeds the desiredlimits.

APPLICATIONS:The model ECONO/ HAT/RA reverse acting valvecan be used to regulate the flow of glycol, water orother media, in critical applications or toeconomically remove heat from equipment or aprocess.

OPERATION:At the designated set point, a thermostatic element locatedat one extreme of the valve (and thermally isolated from thebody of the device), will open or close completely within a10°F (5.6°C) differential (i.e. 35-45°F, etc.) and control theflow of steam, gas, or fluid through the valve based onambient temperature. The TV/SC-A opens on fallingtemperature; the TV/SC-AR opens on rising temperature.An optional solar shield (when used) allows the device to beinstalled where solar heating may affect the set point of thedevice. The TV/SC-A may also be used to control instrumentenclosure temperatures (see TV/SC-I and ITCH productfact sheets).

OPERATION:At the designated set point, a thermostatic element locatedat one extreme of the valve (and thermally isolated from thebody of the device), will open or close completely within a10°F (5.6°C) differential (i.e. 35-45°F, etc.) and control theflow of steam, gas, or fluid through the valve based onambient temperature. OPERATION:At the designated control point, a thermostaticelement located at one extreme of the TV/SC-I(inside the enclosure) regulates the steam supply tothe heater to accurately maintain the desiredtemperature, operating like the thermostat in anoven. Heat radiating from the steam coil heaterreaches the actuator causing it to quickly shut off thesteam supply when the desired temperature isreached, regardless of outside ambient. In coolingapplications, the TV/SC-IR opens on risingtemperature to regulate the flow of cooling media tothe enclosure. The TV/SC-I comes complete with aweather-tight bulkhead fitting for the valve body;optional bulkhead fittings for 3/8 tubing connectionsare available. Also available is a short configurationfor installations with the valve and all connectionscompletely within the enclosure (see TV/SC-A andITCH product fact sheets). These economical valvesare available with set points from 40°F to 210°F(4.4°C to 98.9°C).

APPLICATIONS:The Therm-O-Tech TV/SC-I assures accuratetemperature control in an instrument or analyzerenclosure. It’s a reliable, economical alternative tocostly, hazardous electric heating. This self-contained compact thermostatic control valve sensesenclosure temperature and automatically regulatesthe flow of steam to maintain the temperature. Incooling applications the reverse-acting TV/SC-IRcan be used to regulate the flow of glycol, water, airor other cooling media.

ADVANTAGES:TV/SC-I valves will maintain enclosure temperatureaccurately over a wide range of ambient temperatureswith steam supply pressures from 15 psig to 200psig (1.0 to 13.8 BAR) without danger of overheatingdelicate instruments. No special NEMA-7 or -9housings are required even in potentially explosiveenvironments.

OPERATION:At the designated control point, a thermostatic elementlocated at one extreme of the TV/SC-A valve portion of theITCH Heater Assembly regulates the steam supply to theheater coil to accurately maintain the desired temperature,operating like the thermostat in an oven. The TV/HAT at thevalve inlet keeps the steam supply hot, right up to the valve.Heat radiating from the steam coil heater reaches theactuator causing it to quickly close the steam supply whenthe desired temperature is reached, regardless of ambient.In cooling applications, the TV/SC-AR opens on risingtemperature to regulate the flow of cooling media to theenclosere. The TV/HAT at the outlet of the steam coilregulates outflow based on the condensate temperature, formaximum economy. The ITCH Heater Assembly comescomplete with steam coil, mounting bracket, and TV/SC-Avalve assembly, two TV/HAT valves, and two weather-tightbulkhead fittings for 3/8 tubing connections. TV/SC-A andTV/SC-I valves (with external connections) are also availableseparately.

APPLICATIONS:The Therm-O-Tech ITCH Heater Assembly assuresextremely accurate temperature control in an instrumentor analyzer enclosure. This self-contained unit providesa reliable, economical alternative to costly, hazardouselectric heating. The compact thermostatic control valvesenses enclosure temperature and automaticallyregulates the flow of steam to to the steam coil tomaintain the desired temperature to within 2°F (1.1°C) ofthe desired control point. In applications where theenclosure needs to be cooled, a reverse-acting ITCH/RA can be used to regulate the flow of glycol, water, orother cooling media. These economical valves areavailable with set points from 40°F to 210°F (4.4°C to98.9°C).

ADVANTAGES:ITCH Heater Assemblies will maintain enclosuretemperature accurately over a wide range of ambienttemperatures with steam supply pressures from 15 psigto 200 psig (1.0 to 13.8 BAR) without danger of overheatingdelicate instruments. No special NEMA-7 or -9 housingsare required even in potentially explosive environments.Enclosure temperatures can be maintained within 2°F(1.1°C) for pennies a day.

OPERATION:The US/S-X and US/S-XR valves Thermoloid ® sensor/controller element may be placed against the process lineor pipe with the optional weld-o-let or band-o-let, or in theline with the integral 3/4 NPT-M bushing. This allows thetemperature element to be in contact with the process tocontrol the valve section and regulate the inflow of heatingmedia (or cooling media with the US/S-XR). Inputtemperatures or steam supply can vary widely, but thecontrol temperature is maintained within desired limits.

APPLICATIONS:These compact self contained control valves canmaintain very tight temperature control of any numberof control loops using steam, liquid phase heat transfermedia such as Dowtherm®, hot water, hot oil, etc. Ingeneral they can be used whenever accurate but lowcost control is required. The reverse acting model,US/S-XR can be used to control cooling media toeconomically remove heat from equipment or aprocess.

ADVANTAGES:Models US/S-X and US/S-XR provide a low cost,effective means of accurate temperature controlregardless of available steam pressure or availableheating/cooling media temperature. NPT threadedconnections offer unlimited piping variations andlarge flow capacity. APPLICATIONS:The THERM-O-TECH Enclosure Air ConditioningSystem will keep process equipment from overheatingand going out of calibration or worse yet, going out ofservice. This self-contained unit provides a reliable,economic alternative to costly, hazardous electriccooling such as muffin fans or air conditioning systems.It does not require a special NEMA-7 or -9 enclosureeven in potentially explosive environments. Combinedwith the optional control valve, enclosure temperaturescan be maintained within 2°F (1.1°C) for pennies a day.The Enclosure Air Conditioning System is installedon a typical plant air supply. The vortex device coolsthe air entering the chamber while venting the warmerair to the atmosphere. The sensor and control valvecombination keeps the temperature in the desired presetrange.

OPERATION:

When the shower or eyewash is activated, thepressure drop on a diaphragm opens the steam controlvalve (V-3). REDUNDANT CONTROL:Level 1: (V-1) This valve mixes heated and cold water

and compensates for the pressure dropthrough the heat exchanger and associatedpiping.

Level 2: (V-2) This valve opens when heater outflowtemperature reaches 105°F, bypassing waterback into the steam inlet to limit the heatexchanger output temperature.

Level 3: (V-3) Senses flow from V-2 and modulatesthe steam valve closed. Additionally, if watersupply is interrupted, the steam valve staysclosed until water flow is re-established.

* THE NEED *An instantaneous and reliable source of tempered water for a safety shower/eyewash system using a hot andcold water supply.

* THE PROBLEM *Conventional mixing valves are unsuitable as the means to provide tempered water at safety shower/eyewashstations. These valves by nature have the property of shutting off entirely if either the hot or cold water supply isinterrupted. This is dangerous and unacceptable for safety shower/eyewash systems where cold water must beavailable under all circumstances. To meet today’s OSHA and ANSI recommendations you must have a systemwhich can respond safely to both hot water and cold water supply failures.

* THE SOLUTION *The Therm-O-Mix Station/WWM . It’s WM-1 mixing valve acting in concert with it’s unique PWM-1 pressuresensing controller assure that cold water will flow to the shower and eyewash even if no hot water is available (aslong as the cold water supply is not shut off elsewhere in the system).This is accomplished using completelymechanical, self operating controls. No electricity or air required.

TRIPLE REDUNDANT SAFETY CONTROLS

PWM-1 Pressure Sensing Controller:Therm-Omega-Tech’s unique diaphragm operated valve actuatorsenses the water pressures on both the hot and cold water inletconnections. If hot water pressure is not present at the mixing valveinlet, this actuator will override the mixing valve and allow full flow ofcold water. If no cold water pressure is available at the mixing valveinlet, both the mixing valve and the diaphragm actuator will close offthe hot port to prevent dangerously hot water from flowing to the shower/eyewash system.

WM-1 Mixing Valve:The primary temperature control device is Therm-Omega-Tech’s three-way mixing valve. This valve is designed around our exclusiveThermoloid® sensor/actuator that automatically and accuratelyproportions the water flow in response to outlet water temperature. Thismixing valve simultaneously modulates both the hot and cold waterinlet ports to provide 85°F water to the shower/eyewash system. TheThermoloid® sensor/actuator is the most advanced and reliable thermalactuator of its type available today.

V-4 Safety Override:This control element senses the final water temperature and will positionthe PWM-1 pressure sensing controller to close off the hot water portof the mixing valve if the final water temperature is above 90°F.

OPERATION

After water flow is activated at the shower or eyewash, the outlet water temperature will reach 85°F when hotwater arrives at the mixing valve. The mixing valve then blends the hot and cold water to produce an outputof 85°F water. Therm-Omega-Tech, Inc. also manufactures a Therm-O-Mix Station for use where only plantsteam and cold water are available. Also available are auxiliary freeze protection and scald protection bleedervalves for use where freezing ambient temperatures or overheated lines (due to tracing or high solar heatgain) may be encountered.

OPERATION:The hot fluid connects to the side, pass throughconnection on the HAT/WWM-R valve. Thisconnection is never regulated so it always remainsopen regardless of temperature or valve position.

The hot fluid flow then passes over the thermalactuator which controls the cold fluid inlet port fortempering. If the hot liquid temperature is above thevalve setpoint, the cold fluid port is open. As the hotliquid cools, the valve automatically modulates toreduce the cold fluid inlet flow. If the hot fluid is belowthe specified temperature, the cold fluid inlet port isclosed, since no additional cooling is required.

APPLICATIONS:Can be used in applications where the fluid must betempered, for example, the discharge of condensateor boiler blowdown with cooler water before piping toa sewer or return system.

APPLICATIONS:The THERM-O-TECH HAT/WWM and HAT/SWM valvescan be used in any application in which a constant outflowof water at a specified temperature is desired. Thesevalves, like any mixing valve, must be installed with checkvalves on both hot and cold inlets for the HAT/WWM and atleast on the cold side for the HAT/SWM. Pressure reducingvalves are recommended on HAT/WWM installations inwhich system pressures are likely to vary. The PRV’sshould be adjusted to approximately 10-20% less thanaverage system pressure for accurate and constant outflowtemperatures. In some installations throttling valves may beused in place of PRV’s. These throttling valves should beset and locked for safety.

The HAT/SWM can be used to trace critical components that muststay warm, but below steam temperature at atmosphere (212°F or100°C).

OPERATION:This self-contained valve is designed around a thermalactuator that automatically adjusts the steam or hot watercomponent to temper outflow water to the specifiedtemperature. The device is factory set and is not useradjustable, and is therefore tamper-proof. The valve isdesigned to yield outflow temperatures within a given range.If water is inadvertantly not turned on, the actuator turns offthe steam flow at the set point temperature, preventing thetypical "hose full of steam" problem. Typical set points (°F)available are 90, 105, 125, 145, 155, 180 & 210. (32, 41, 52,63, 68, 82 & 99°C)

EXAMPLE:

1. Enter chart 1 at desired hot water flow rate (i.e. 8 GPM) and movehorizontally to the right to the curve. From this point, drop downvertically to read the required water pressure drop in PSI across thevalve(P1-P2) (29 PSI for the example; therfore, minimum supplypressure = 30+29 = 59 PSI).

2. Continue to move horizontally at the hot water flow rate into chart 2to the T line which represents the desired temperature rise of thewater (T2 - T1) (i.e. 125° - 65° = 60°F)

3. From the intersection point on chart 2, move down vertically tochart 3 to the intersection with the curve which represents the waterinlet pressure (P1) (i.e. 60 PSIG). From this point , move horizontally tothe left to the P3 scale and read the required minimum inlet steampressure (i.e. 100 PSIG).

It is desired to have a flow of 8 GPM of 125° F water at 30 PSIdelivery pressure, with a water supply temperature of 65°F.

OPERATION:Therm-Omega-Tech’s STVM valve uses uniquevortex technology for silent operation. Duringoperation, cold water enters the mixing valveand forms an inner vortex that moves from theinside out, while incoming steam forms anopposing outer vortex that moves from the outsidein. Mixing occurs as the two vortices collide,thoroughly mixing and heating the water to thedesired temperature.What’s especially remarkable about vortextechnology is what you don’t hear - the banging,popping, and crackling noises that come fromordinary mixing valves. That means there’s noneof the racket that can add stress to the workenvironment, and none of the cavitation that can

2. Selection Guide and CapacitiesThe graphs indicate the maximum flow of hot water atvarious temperatures for a given steam supply pressure.When selecting a temperature set point, ascertain the hotwater temperature and quantity required, and the waterand steam pressure available.

First select the desired temperature rise chart. From thebottom row, select the desired flow in GPM. From there,move vertically up the chart to the left hand column todetermine the amount of water and steam pressurerequired tp provide the desired temperature rise at thedesired flow rate.Example:

OPERATION:

THERM-O-MIX valves are designed around ourexclusive Thermoloid sensor/controller, the mostadvanced and reliable thermal actuator of its typeavailable today. THERM-O-MIX valves simultaneouslycontrol both hot and cold ports, to automatically andaccurately proportion the flow in response to fluidtemperature. On loss of cold or hot fluid supply theflow rate is reduced to a trickle. For fast response,these valves are compact and low mass.

For mixing applications, the THERM-O-MIX valve willproportion the flow from two inlet ports to produce thedesired outlet port temperature.

OPERATION:The THERM-OMEGA-TECH Model M/D temperaturecontrol valve is designed for 3-way mixing or divertingapplications. For fast response, the valve is compact andlow mass. Therm-O-Tech's valves are designed aroundour exclusive Thermoloid sensor/controller thatautomatically and accurately proportions the flow inresponse to fluid temperature. The Thermoloid sensor/controller is the most advanced and reliable thermal actuatorof its type available today.

OPERATION:The THERM-OMEGA-TECH Model M/D self-operatingtemperature control valve is designed for 3-way mixing ordiverting applications. Therm-O-Tech's valves aredesigned around our exclusive Thermoloid sensor/controllerthat automatically and accurately proportions the flow inresponse to fluid temperature. OPERATIONThe thermal actuator is filled with Thermoloid® material,which changes phase from a solid to a liquid and expandsas the temperature increases. Since the material isessentially incompressible and encased in a rigid housing,only the piston can move and extend as the volume of thematerial increases. This motion can be used to operate awide variety of devices. When the Thermoloid® materialcools the volume contracts and allows the piston to retractif a return force is acting on the piston. The piston will notnormally retract unless a return force is present.

The phase change and resultant motion occurs over anarrow temperature range. This property allows precisecontrol of a device at a specific temperature with nosignificant effect outside the chosen control range.

APPLICATIONSThe precise motion of these thermal actuators can be usedto operate a wide variety of devices, limited only by theimagination of the designer. Temperature actuated valves,switches, latches, clamps and control devices are typicalapplications.

ADVANTAGESNo outside power source is required to produce motion.Temperature change alone can be used to operate a device;e.g., open or close a valve, move or release a latch, operatea switch. Because the Thermoloid® material operates inboth the solid and liquid phase, each of which are essentiallyincompressible, load changes on the piston (within designlimits) have little or no effect on operating temperature. Thisis in contrast to vapor-filled or liquid to vapor phase changedevices which are generally very sensitive to load changes(changing the load on these devices, e.g., changing springtension, is used to change the operating temperaturerange).

Since the operating temperature of solid-liquid phasechange actuators is determined by the Thermoloid®material properties (i.e., melting and solidificationtemperatures), the operating temperature is extremelystable, repeatable, and accurate. The properties of thesethermostatic materials are so precise that they are used asprimary reference standards by ASTM for instrumentcalibration.

APPLICATION PROFILE #1INSTRUMENT ENCLOSURE VALVES (HEATING*)

Application: For the control of inside temperature of instrument enclosures or analyzer housings that are heatedvia steam or hot fluids.

Purpose & Background: Instruments/analyzers installed out-of-doors are exposed to adverse conditions and arecustomarily enclosed in insulated boxes to protect them from physical and weather damage. Many installations requirea certain inside temperature be maintained to prevent freezing, control viscosity or to maintain instrument calibration.Two systems are commonly utilized to provide such protection:

Electrical Trace ; using an electrical heat tracing cable. Normally provides excellent temperaturecontrol with integral thermostatic control but is costly to operate. Not suitable in many hazardouslocations and traced equipment is subject to freeze damage during power outages.

Steam/Hot Fluid Trace ; this is normally accomplished by dressing a copper or stainless steel tubearound the inside of an enclosure or by installing a coil or finned tube heating element inside anenclosure. Steam, heat transfer fluid, hot oil or water and even hot condensate from a steam main iscirculated through the loop or heater providing the source of heat to protect the instruments. Thisnormally provides excellent freeze protection but when uncontrolled can result in overheating ofthe instrumentation.

The Therm-O-Tech TV/SC-I valve was designed to provide safe and economicalcontrol of the heating medium to regulate the internal temperature of the enclosure.

The most common installation ofthe TV-SC-I valve is shown inFig. 1 : The actuator of the valveis inserted through the enclosurewall utilizing the integral bulk-head fitting provided with thevalve. In this arrangement feederconnections are external to theenclosure.

Due to the increased use of tubebundles, where heat trace linesenter the enclosure with impulseor sample lines, a short bodydesign is required to allow allconnections to be within theenclosure. This can beaccomplished using the Therm-O-Tech TV/SC-A valve design asshown in Fig. 2.

The ITCH Assembly(Instrumentation ThermostaticallyControlled Heater) comescomplete with steam coil,mounting bracket, TV/HATvalves, and tubing bulkheadfittings, and may be mountedeither internally as in Fig. 2 , orwith external steam supplyconnections. (Fig. 3)

AUTOMATIC CONTROL USING US/A OR TV/SC-A VALVESEXAMPLE:A winterizing steam tracing system in a plant located in Philadelphia, PA consumes about 500 pounds per hour of steam.

This system was manually turned on when danger of freezing temperatures approached (mid-September) and turned off inlate Spring when danger of freezing had passed (mid-April). Total yearly operating hours are 5,088:

212 days x 24 hours = 5,088 hours in potential freeze season.

The plant's steam cost is $ 5.00 / 1,000 pounds of steam. The operating cost of this system can be calculated as follows:

In a "Resupply System", a pressurized source replaces water. Freeze protection is provided by removing the colderwater from the system, and allowing warmer resupply water to modulate the valve closed. Larger valves will not wastewater, and it is impossible to oversize. The rate at which water must be removed can be calculated as follows:

Water Supplies for Safety Showers & Eyewash Stations

There are many concerns in industries equipped with safety shower/eyewash units related to watersupply quality, OSHA and ANSI safety requirements, and providing safe and comfortable watertemperatures for employees if a shower/eyewash must be used.

1. Water Quality: As a general rule of thumb, if it is safe enough to drink, it is safe enough toshower with. An area of concern is insuring that the water supply is free of any sedimentbuildup and any bacteria that might have developed in the standing water supply. ANSIstandards recommend that all emergency shower/eyewash devices be checked on a weeklybasis to ensure proper working conditions, confirm adequate water supply and to flush anysediment/bacteria out of the system. Many shower manufacturers offer units with pipelinestrainers or recommend they be installed on a dedicated water supply line.

2. Water Capacity: Plumbed emergency shower/eyewash equipment requires a line size thatwill provide adequate flow. The chart below shows typical water pressure and supplyrequirements.

Most of these are clearly understandable. Further clarification is offered for two of the items under"Other Considerations".

3. Delivered Water Temperature: 60° to 95°F (16° to 35°C). In most cases the high temperaturecondition is of critical concern and a high inspection area for OSHA ; however, low temperaturehazards are also a growing concern.

a) Overtemperature/Scald Protection: Supply lines or shower units installed outside aresubject to solar heating with internal water temperatures reaching 150°F (66°C) and above.Likewise, indoor units and lines may be subject to high ambient temperature conditions fromprocess, steam or condensate lines. This overtemperature water must be purged from thesystem to prevent scalding.

Relationship of Time and Temperature: Studies1 have demonstrated that there are two criticalfactors which determine the risk of a burn injury occurring: the temperature of the material andthe length of time the skin is exposed to the temperature. For water, the following chart providestime/temperature relationships required to cause a full-thickness (3rd degree) burn.

Remember! Normal safety standards dictate a minimum of 15 minutes washdown in the shower!

The most common device used for overtemperature/scaldprotection by shower manufacturers and retrofitted byusers is a self-contained temperature activated valve, suchas the Therm-Omega-Tech HAT/RA or IC/RA designs.

The internal sensor/actuator operates over a 10°F (5.5°C)temperature differential, with the valve being fully closedat 95°F (35°C), starting to open and allowing a small waterflow when fluid temperature is sensed at 96°F (35.5°C),and increasing to full flow if temperature reaches 105°F(40°C) or above. This purges the hot water from thesystem, to be replaced by the cooler water in the supplyline.

Valves are normally installed at a low point in the station(see typical piping layout) to insure:

1. Full station and system piping are purged of hot water2. Valve discharge will not reduce available flow to shower or eyewash unit.

b) Low Temperature Shock/Hypothermia Protection: Many facilities are now considering theeffects of low water temperature in relationship to the length of time a person will shower, or thecombined effects of hypothermia and shock to the victim due to extended exposure to cold water(Remember: 15 minutes or more is required).

A 1993 case relates that a power plant employee was splashed with a hazardous solution. Followingplant safety procedures, he at once went to the nearest shower unit, started a full body shower, andalmost immediately jumped out of the shower due to the cold water. Knowing the potential dangerfrom burns, four fellow employees forced him back into the shower, holding him in place for therequired 15 minute washdown; by then, he was unconscious and in shock.

Many manufacturers are addressing this concern by offering a number of variations of temperedwater supply systems. These range in size and design from electric or steam water heaters to hot/cold water mixing assemblies.

In line with the needs within the industry, Therm-Omega-Tech's Constant Temperature WaterSupplies are available as either a unit that mixes hot and cold water supply like the Therm-O-Mix ®/WWM or a unit that utilizes plant steam to indirectly heat the supply water like the Therm-O-Mix ®

Station . Both have redundant controls for safety, and are self-contained; no electrical connectionsare required. The most common temperature requested is about 85°F (29°C); not warm enough toopen the skin pores and not too cold to deter usage. Information on both the mixing valves and mixerassemblies are available from the factory or your local Therm-Omega-Tech distributor. Therm-Omega-Tech can also custom engineer recirculation loop systems for servicing multiple safetyshower/eyewash stations.

4. Freeze Protection: The second item under "Other Considerations" refers to freezeprotection, mechanical and/or electrical. Many shower manufacturers offer heavilyinsulated and electrically heat traced shower designs. In some areas, electricaltracing cannot be used safely (due to explosion hazards), and potential poweroutages could well result in freeze damage.

A few manufacturers provide backup freeze protection on traced units by theaddition of mechanical freeze protection valves while others (and many users)depend only on freeze protection valves equal to the Therm-Omega-Tech HAT/FPand IC/FP designs.

The HAT/FP, like the HAT/RA scald valve, is a temperature actuated device; inthis case, operating over a 35° - 40°F (1.7° - 4.4°C) range to enhance waterconservation.

The valve starts to open when sensing a fluid temperature of 35°F (1.7°C) or less,closing when the resupply water temperature reaches 40°F (4.4°C).

OPERATING COST SAVINGS

The THERM-OMEGA-TECH HAT valves provide substantial savings when compared to the cost of operating conventionalsteam traps. The HAT valves sense condensate temperature and open to allow flow only when the condensate temperatureis below the setpoint, well below saturated steam temperature. The condensate forms a liquid seal ahead of each valve preventinglive steam losses. Also, the sensible heat in the condensate between steam temperature and the HAT discharge temperatureis used for heating.

Most properly functioning conventional steam traps have inherent live steam loses: at least 2 lbs/hr. for inverted bucket traps, andover 5 lbs/hr for disc traps. Actual field studies have shown that live steam losses of disc traps increase considerably with time inservice, with loses of 20 lb/hr after less than one year of service being not unusual. Losses from other types of conventional trapsalso increase with time, but usually less than loses from disc traps.

For this example, we will use 2 lb/hr of live steam loss for conventional traps in good condition and compare this to HAT valves which have zero live steam loss. Further, HAT valves achieve additional savings by discharging condensate atreduced temperature. These additional savings can be calculated based on the value of the heat content at varying dischargetemperatures.

STEAM TRACING BASICS*

Heat tracing is used for liquid-containing pipelines to prevent the liquids from freezing or becoming too viscous.With pipelines containing gases, heat tracing prevents gas components from condensing.

Heat tracing will normally be required when:

• The lowest ambient site temperature will be below the freezing point of the liquid carried in thepipes. An exception must be made for underground water-pipes installed below the ground frostlevel. Examples of liquid lines requiring heat tracing are: phosphoric acid, molten sulfur, glacialacetic acid, benzoic acid, cresol, naphthalene, phthalic anhydride, sorbitol, p-xlene, and water.

• The liquid becomes highly viscous at ambient temperatures. Examples are: certain crude oils,fuel oils, polymeric materials, waxes, bitumen and tar residues, and caustic soda liquor.

• The gas carried in the line has a dewpoint above the ambient temperature and, condensation ofliquid from the gas is undesirable. Examples are: fuel gas in oil refineries where the liquid causestrouble in the gas burners; natural gas containing moisture that may cause freezeup of controlvalves or even the whole system; compressor suction lines (liquid is harmful to compressors); andH2S/water vapor (causes corrosion on condensation.)

In winterizing practice, water lines are insulated in an effort to avoid tracing. However, there is always a heatloss from insulated lines. If the liquid cooling resulting from this heat loss cannot be tolerated, heat tracing willbe necessary.

If there is no heat tracing, the line may have to be disassembled, with associated high costs and long shutdowntimes.

The length of a traced line is quite variable. It may be a few feet in a process area, a few thousand feetbetween offices and the process area, or over a hundred miles as in the case of underground lines carryingcrude oil or fuel oil.

Still, steam tracing is commonly used because there is a surplus of low-pressure steam available in mostplants.

Since steam has a high latent heat, only a small quantity is required for a given heating load. Also, steam hasa high film heat-transfer-coefficient, condenses at constant temperature, and flows to the point of use withoutpumps.

The simplest method of external tracing is to wrap copper tubing around valves, pipe fittings and instruments.This procedure is unsuitable for horizontal runs because steam condensate collects at low points and mayfreeze during a shutdown. (THERM-OMEGA-TECH, INC., as well as most engineers, recommend thathorizontal runs be traced by strapping a single run of copper tubing to the bare underside of the pipeline.There are different means of insulating and increasing the thermal efficiency of the trace.)

It is essential to ensure that the trace lines are self-draining.

The length of a single trace tube (from steam supply valve to steam trap is limited by the pressure drop in thetrace. The trap should have a condensate drainage capacity to match the heating load. At a steam pressureof 100 psig or higher, the length of a single trace should not exceed 200 ft. If the steam pressure is lower, atracer length of 100 ft. is recommended.

Air Binding : The process of steam trap closing due tothe presence of air rather than steam. This slows downthe discharge of condensate and the ability of a steamsystem to reach its desired temperature.

Blow-Down Valve: A valve used when blowing pipelinedirt or scale from a strainer screen or boiler drum.

British Thermal Unit (Btu): The quantity of heatrequired to raise one pound of water one degreeFahrenheit.

Capacity: The maximum amount of condensate thatcan be discharged by a steam trap at specific conditionsof temperature and pressure differential (between its inletand outlet). Capacity is measured in pounds per hour.

Condensate: Water that is the result of steam changingfrom vapor to a liquid.

Cycle: The opening and closing action of a steam trapthat allows it to pass condensate and then stop thepassage of steam.

Dirt Pocket: A length of pipe in the discharge line ofsteam heated equipment that allows the collection (bygravity) of pipeline scale and dirt.

Discharge Temperature: The temperature ofcondensate (measured at a steam trap’s inlet) while it isbeing discharged. Sometimes referred to as thetemperature at which a steam trap starts to open.

Enthalpy : The total energy content of a fluid, includingboth heat and mechanical energy.

Flash Steam: Steam that results when saturated wateror condensate is discharged to a lower pressure. It issteam that could not exist at a higher pressure.

Flash Tank: A vessel or tank where flash steam isaccumulated for subsequent use.

Latent Heat of Vaporization: Heat that produces achange of state without a change in temperature suchas, changing water into steam, sometimes referred tosimply as “latent heat”.

Modulate: The partial opening and closing of a steamtrap thereby regulating the discharge flow of condensate.Modulation is in contrast to a full open/full closed modeof operation.

PSIA: Pounds per square inch absolute - a measure ofpressure including atmospheric pressure.

PSIG: Pounds per square inch gauge - a measure ofpressure excluding atmospheric pressure.

Safety Load Factor: A factor by which the calculatedcondensate load is multiplied to determine the capacitya trap should possess to properly serve its selectedapplication. The safety load factor is used toaccommodate system variables and uncertaintiesaffecting the condensate flow rate.

Sizing: The process of matching the condensatedrainage requirements of an application to a steam traphaving a suitable capacity.

Saturated Condensate: Condensate that has atemperature equal to that of the steam with which it is incontact.

Saturation Steam: Steam that has a temperature equalto that of the condensate with which it is in contact.

Saturation Curve: Graphic representation of the boilingpoint of water at various pressures (the pressure andtemperature at which saturated steam and condensateexist).

Saturation Temperature: The temperature at whichsaturated steam and condensate exist.

Sensible Heat: Heat that produces a temperature risein a body (such as water).

Steam, Dry: Steam having no water droplets suspendedin it.

Steam, Live: “Live steam” is an expression commonlyused to describe steam that is still able to do useful work,in contrast to flash steam at atmospheric pressure.

Steam, Total Heat Of: The sum of BTU's per pound ofboth the sensible heat (of condensate) and the latentheat (of vaporization).

Steam, Wet: Steam having fine water dropletssuspended in it, and as a result, having a lower heatcontent than dry steam.

Steam Binding: The process of steam keeping a steamtrap closed and thereby preventing the discharge ofcondensate that has formed upstream of the trap. Thiscondition results when the condensate discharge lineto a steam trap is subjected to sufficient heating that thecondensate in it is changed back into steam therebyblocking the flow of condensate to the trap.

Steam Separator: A device that removes entrainedwater droplets from steam flow.

Steam Tables: Tables that list the properties of steamand condensate at various pressures and temperatures.

Steam Tracing: The use of steam to:1. Heat or maintain the temperature of a process

liquid in a pipeline.2. Prevent water lines and related equipment from

winter freeze-ups.3. Provide uniform temperature in and around

instruments so as to help maintain their calibration.

APPLICATION:

Some chemical products must beheated to an optimum

temperature aboveambient temperature, but arealso sensitive to overheating, e.g.:

formaldehyde.

THERM-OMEGA-TECH's HAT/SWM valves can be used to provide a convenient, economical,reliable and effective hot water tracing system. Steam and water supplies are all that must beconnected to the valve.

At an eastern specialty chemicals plant, it was required to maintain formaldehyde lines at about100°F. Lower temperatures would affect product quality, while higher temperatures would cause theformation of formic acid and other undesirable side products.

The solution was to install THERM-OMEGA-TECH's HAT/SWM-100 and HAT-100 valves whichtogether provide both temperature control and backup safety high limit control. Approximately 100psig steam and 50 psig water were piped to each HAT/SWM valve. The outlet from the valve thensupplied the 3/8" tracer lines on various formaldehyde process piping. At the end of each tracer linejust before connection to the return system, a HAT-100 valve was installed. After the system wasstarted-up, the water temperature at the outlet of the HAT/SWM was approximately 100°F, exactly asthe system design specified. As the safety backup, if for any reason the tracer temperature at thetracer end exceeds 110°F, the HAT-100 will close off to prevent overheating. In this particular case,the customer chose to recycle the heated water to the cooling tower sump, where the water wascooled for reuse. A pump drawing from the cooling tower sump supplies water to the HAT/SWMvalves.

In addition to the HAT/SWM and HAT valves, additional system protection and reliability was achievedby installation of THERM-OMEGA-TECH's HAT/FP valves at key locations and low points. TheseHAT/FP valves provide positive freeze protection to system components and piping in the event of afailure of the steam supply, which could happen if the boiler or its controls fail. The HAT/FP valveswill drain the water from the system at 35°F to prevent freeze damage.

FOR AUXILIARY HEATING

The superintendent of a mid-size steam plant supplying a centralized steam distribution system took a unique approachto solving two problems on the system.

The first problem was a back pressure build up in the condensate return system due to mechanical-design steam trapsdischarging at close to steam temperature. This resulted in high temperatures in the return, with a two phase flow of hotcondensate combined with flash steam, pressurizing the return and surging within the condensate flash tanks. Theresulting high temperature/back pressure greatly reduced the capacity of steam traps throughout the distribution system.In several cases it reduced the heat output of some equipment, and increased water-hammer problems in steam feederlines.

A second problem within the distribution system was the lack of adequate space heaters or unit heaters in a number ofwork and storage areas, even though steam and return lines were run through the area.

The unique approach to solving both problems was to utilize the hot condensate from drip stations to supply steam/hotwater unit heaters for auxiliary heating, controlling the hot water/condensate discharge from the heater with the THERM-OMEGA-TECH's HAT valve (Heat Actuated Trap). The design of the HAT valves allows the user to select the actualoperating temperatures of the HAT valve maximizing recovery of usable heat (ie: open for discharge at 150°F; valvecloses on a 10°F(5.6°C) rise - no flow at 160°F(71°C).
