2007

Twenty five years ago this June, I took one of the biggest steps of my life; Ibecame self-employed, working from my back bedroom supported by my wifeJanis.

I started to enter the unknown, and it’s amazing how fast you learn when youhave to generate your own income.

Looking back over the last 25 years, it is sometimes very hard to believe thechanges and progress we have made and that, today, we sit as a Top 80Consultant in the UK.

You also reflect upon all of the members of staff who have moved on and thefew who have retired. One way or another, they have contributed to where weare today. You also realise that there are many who have been with me for sucha substantial part of this journey and, today, still give such fantastic support.

Of course, no business can succeed without a solid client base and we areeternally grateful to the individuals, companies and organisations who havebelieved in us, providing us with the opportunity to grow and establish ourselvesas a caring and respectable business and employer; the list of people andcompanies is endless. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all foryour faith and continued support, and long may it continue.

As always, we continue to challenge our business and look to make ongoingimprovements. All feedback from our clients is taken very seriously, so pleasecontinue to communicate with us on any issues.

We have also taken this 25 year anniversary as an opportunity to revisit ourbranding and image and, hopefully, you will view with interest the changes wehave made to our Group magazine, now called LIFE. Its aim is to give you awindow into our life here.

As we look forward to the next 25 years, it is good to know that we are stillgrowing at a steady and healthy rate which will create further challenges, opportunities and potential for clients, partners and our staff. We secured ourcurrent year’s order book in the first 8 months of trading, and are lookingforward to a very positive start to the new Financial Year in April.

The Group has continued to change in many ways, entering new areas ofbusiness such as Risk Management, the Environment and BusinessConsultancy, whilst not forgetting the importance of our core business as amulti-disciplinary organisation.

We have been successful in securing further framework term commissions andcontinue to receive repeat business from our established client base so wemust be doing something right.

As an organisation we continue to invest in our people, and my congratulationsgo to Fred Purdy, Rob Battley and Nick Banton, who have become CharteredSurveyors. Also to Alan Hayes, who became a Chartered Architect and, finally, Scott Tillsley on becoming a Chartered Building Services Engineer. We recognise the importance of encouraging the next wave of our youngprofessionals. This industry is being starved of resources, so it is reallyimportant to focus on the development of young talent.

Last year we became the first consultant nationally to achieve the BusinessExcellence accreditation. In addition to this we proved our commitment to ourstaff by becoming accredited to Investors in People and, finally, completed ourdedication to the environment by being awarded ISO 14001 accreditation.

As we all know, business is perpetual motion; you can never take anything forgranted, so this is a good opportunity for me to thank my fellow Directors,Managers and members of staff who have been so loyal, supported the causeand, more importantly, put up with me.

Again, I need to thank our clients for such great support for, without you, noneof this journey would have been possible.

Finally, I must thank my wife Janis and my children, Anthony and Stephanie, forputting up with me through all the ups and downs – they have been fantastic.

I wish you and your families a happy, prosperous and healthy New Year.

Here’s to the next 25 years.

Steve FrankhamChairman, Frankham Consultancy Group.

‘‘COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENTGiven our status as possibly the mostprominent multi-disciplined design group in theSouth East, and as one of the most dedicatedand prolific providers of specialist services, itshould come as no surprise that we arepleased to inform you of yet anotheraccreditation for the company.

The BS EN ISO 14001 accreditation reflects ouron-going commitment to minimise the impactof our operations on the environment throughthe implementation of a comprehensive andeffective Environmental Management System.

The auditors were particularly impressed withour recognition that our design services had afar greater environmental impact than therecycling of its office waste materials. BSIcommended the introduction of our in-housedesign tool, Designers Environmental RiskAssessment, and encouraged its futuredevelopment.

Stuart Macmillan, Senior Associate forEnvironmental Engineering, told us “it was verypleasing for the Group to receive recognitionfrom external sources for the progress made inits Environmental Design Services”. He addedthat “without the support and enthusiasm overthe last three years of Steve Frankham and IanCrockett, it would not have been possible”.

LONDONTORNADORESPONSEStructural Engineers from our Sidcup Headquarters andBuilding Surveyors from our Oxford office, working closelywith Stadium Housing, responded to the emergency appeal tomobilise and attend the site of December's tornado in northwest London. Our personnel were on-site liaising and assistingthe emergency authorities and residents to advise on thesafety and stability of affected properties in the region andcommencing the task of advising on the repair works required.

Six people were injured on Thursday 7th December 2006 whenthe tornado swept through the north west London suburbleaving a trail of destruction.

Rooftops were ripped off and cars were badly damaged whenthe freak weather struck at around 11am in Kensal Rise.

One man in his 50s was taken to hospital with a head injuryand five others were treated at the scene for minor injuriesand shock.

Eleven fire units carrying 50 fire-fighters were called to thearea and the London Ambulance helicopter was scrambled.

Witnesses reported seeing debris falling through the air, treesuprooted, front doors missing and windows smashed.

THE BEECHEBromley EnvironmentalEducation Centre, High Elms We have been employed by Bromley Councilunder their term framework to providemulti-disciplinary design services for anexciting new project in High Elms CountryPark, near to Downe village and Orpingtonin Kent. The scheme is for a newenvironmental education and visitors centre, which is to be constructed using eco friendlytechnology, such as straw bales. We haveworked closely with the Council frominception through to the current stage, which will be to oversee the project on-sitewhen work is due to commence.

The new building will be constructed usinga load bearing, FSC approved timber framewith straw bales, bought from a localfarmer, to form the external walls. Thesewalls will be lime rendered to weatherproofthe building, creating a breathable externalenvelope with very high insulation values, exceeding the current Building Regulations. The roof is to be a grass roof constructionusing wild grasses from around the site, tointegrate the building within its naturalsetting. The roof has been designed with bigoverhangs, essential for straw baleconstruction, and also to help controlsummer solar gain.

A sustainable approach has influenced thedesign process from the outset, withemphasis on the way the building will beused and run. The layout design, choice ofbuilding materials and constructionmethods and the conservation of energy inthe build process and in the running of thebuilding will all contribute to long termenergy and economic savings.

Our aim is to create a building for use byschools, local residents and communitygroups, that will help develop theirunderstanding of the use of sustainablebuilding technology.

Our Land Survey team is continuing with its

work in the underground rail environment

with further projects in Central London.

Work has begun on the installation of

mobility impaired access ramps across the

underground network and Frankham

Consultancy Group Surveyors and

Engineers are heavily involved. Right from

the initial measured building and platform

gauging surveys, the design of the humps

and finally through to hump installation,

setting-out and gauge checks, the Land

Survey division are an integral part of

the project.

Elsewhere the network is continuing

its station modernisation programme and

the Land Surveyors are producing floor

plans, reflected ceiling plans, cross-

sections and internal and external

elevations of various stations across

London.

All our Surveyors are certified to access all

areas, including the tracks, depots, lift and

machine rooms and the equipment rooms.

We are pleased and proud to have been awarded a conservationcommission on these three prominent and popular ancient monumentsin and around Rochester.

Rochester Castle, constructed in 1038, has one of the tallest keeps inEngland and is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture. It has had a chequered history, being twice besieged and badlydamaged in 1215 and 1264.

Having been described as being in ‘a ruinous state’ as early as 1780,it has, over the past century, been subjected to various repair andimprovement strategies.

Upnor Castle was built between 1559 and 1567 to guard the newdockyard at Chatham and the warships anchored in the River Medway.

Owing to the improvement in river defences, in the 17th Century itsdefensive role declined and it was converted from a military fortress toa naval magazine for gunpowder and other stores for naval ships, containing the largest stocks of gunpowder in England.

Temple Manor dates from the 12th Century and is the sole survivingpart of a much larger complex of buildings constructed to a highstandard by the Knights Templar, probably to provide lodging forTemplar dignitaries whilst en-route from London to Dover.

A number of extensions were added during the ensuing centuries butduring the Second World War it fell into disrepair.

It was however restored to its current condition by the Ministry ofPublic Buildings and Works in the early 1950s.

Instructed by Medway Council’s Design and Surveying Team, ourmulti-disciplinary role is to provide Architectural, Building Surveyingand Structural Engineering expertise to examine, develop andimplement repair and improvement strategies in the short andlong terms.

Close liaison is required not only with the Council’s Design andSurveying staff, but also with their Conservation Architect, Tourism andHeritage Manager, and with English Heritage.

Of immediate concern is the development of proposals to restore full, safe access to the battlements of Rochester Castle which have beentemporarily closed to the public on Health and Safety grounds. In addition, enhanced protection from falling masonry is being considered which willalso improve the appearance of the current access staircase.

At Upnor Castle attention is required to decaying stonework, to dry andwet rot attacks and to drainage defects.

The external steps which feature in many of the Civil WeddingCeremonies are being re-constructed.

Works to Temple Manor centre around maintaining the weather-tightness of the structure, utilising new gutters, rainwater goods anddrainage repairs.

It is already evident that the immediate access to a full range ofexperienced professionals offered by us is enabling a swift response toproblems and speedy development of proposals.

FRANKHAM RISKMANAGEMENTSERVICESASSIST MAJOR SOCIAL HOUSING CLIENTMEET AUDIT COMMISSION DEADLINESFrankham Risk Management Services has recently assisted one ofour major housing clients to meet some tight performancedeadlines set by the Audit Commission.

Our client was subject to an audit in July 2006 and, following thereport issued by the Audit Commission in October, we were called into assist in meeting a number of targets by the end of November.

We have seen a trend recently and, like many other organisations, our client was falling behind with the changes to the Control ofAsbestos at Work Regulations (CAWR). With our help, a number ofshortfalls were identified, namely in the communication ofinformation on asbestos to tenants, employees and contractors.Under CAWR, employers have a duty to inform people who may beaffected by work activities involving asbestos. CAWR also requiresemployers to ensure that adequate information, instruction andtraining on asbestos are provided to their employees.

Part of our strategy to meet these requirements was the productionof an asbestos information pamphlet for tenants. Given the sensitivenature of the topic, it was all important we produce a document thathad a sensitive approach while, at the same time, retain someuseful guidance. It was intended to include the pamphlet in a mailshot to some 16,000 residents and, understandably, there was someconcern over an anticipated high volume of enquires from thetenants. Consequently, we jointly organised with Pinnacle PSG atemporary call centre and technical helpline to deal with theexpected call volume, which also included us providing asbestosawareness training to the call centre personnel. Ultimately, theoperation has so far proved to have been a PR success with the callvolume being so low that the client is no longer out-sourcing thebulk of the call handling element.

A second key part of the strategy was to provide asbestos awarenesstraining for a wide range of internal personnel and also includedsome of the client’s contractors. Bespoke asbestos awarenesstraining sessions were targeted at those personnel within theorganisation who were most likely to come into contact withasbestos. Further to this, contributors to the supply chain wereinvited to attend a training session at our Sidcup offices to bebriefed on the client’s Asbestos Management Plan and given ademonstration of the asbestos database.

This was all successfully delivered by the November deadlineand has helped our client move several steps closer towardsbest practice.

WE WANT YOUR IDEAS.

Ten years ago my eldest son, Iain, was diagnosed to have a conditioncalled Freidrich's Ataxia - a genetic disorder for which, at the time ofdiagnosis, there was no cure.

Over the years there has been a great deal of research into Ataxia, and I was therefore pleased to accept the UCLH's ‘invitation’ to takepart in one of their charity treks to raise money for their researchprogramme (it also helped that they are one of our clients!!).

The trek took place in the southern part of Chile, in the PatagonianAndes - one of the world's most stunning and significant wildernessareas. It involved trekking for five days through the Parque NacionalTorres del Paine, one of the world's classic trekking routes.Breathtaking views, together with glaciers, rivers, turquoise lakes, forests and abundant wildlife provided constantly changing sceneryand experiences.

The route took us through the heart of the park, along a mixture offlat grassy plains to long steep climbs and descents. The terrainvaried from rocky, dusty tracks to muddy, boggy areas. On averagewe walked for eight hours each day, covering 60 miles in total.

A typical day would start with breakfast in the mess tent at 6.30 a.m.,the walk itself and then return to the camp site for a hot mealand drinks!

Thanks to the support from the Chairman and staff at Frankham, Ihave been able to raise £6,500.00 for the Charity, along withcompleting the challenge with unforgettable memories, a hugesense of achievement and having made firm friends.
