Chamber membership and community. I want to commend Events Committee Co-Chairs
Marcia Calvo of Calvo’s Insurance, Janel Pangelinan of Pacifica Insurance Underwriters,
Inc., and committee members, Chamber staff, SYP and NMC Volunteers, and especially
Interim President, Frankie Eliptico and NMC for their partnership in this event. It was
truly a success and we look forward to future collaborations.
In other news, the minimum wage has increased to $7.25/hour effective September 20,
2018.
Today, we have the following guest speakers:
· Esther Muna, Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Health Care
Corporation Board to provide an update on the agency.
· David Gervino, External Affairs Office of Federal Emergency Management
Agency to share information about how to sign up for federal assistance. Also
joining us is a representative of the Small Business Administration (SBA) to
provide information on Small Business and Non-Profit assistance.
In addition, we will have members of the Marine Corp. Reserves on Guam to help
the Saipan Young Professionals kick-off the second annual Toys 4 Tots campaign on
Saipan. I encourage our members to support this by signing up to become a partner this
year!
Today, we also welcome Ms. Maxine Lazslo who will serve at the Chamber’s Executive
Director.
We appreciate your participation and support. As always, I encourage you to take an
active role in your Chamber by joining a committee! Please do not hesitate to reach out to
me or any of the Board Members for suggestions, comments, or concerns.

The Armed Forces Committee of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce hosted a welcoming reception for USS Benfold on
Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Godfather’s Bar from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Chamber Board of Directors and members
welcomed USS Benfold Captain Mitchell and more than forty of his service members. The Chamber presented Captain

Following the night of the reception, the Chamber Armed Forces Committee organized a beach clean-up for the crew in
partnership with the Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance (MINA) on Thursday, September 27, 2018. With the clean-up
geared to assist service members with their community relations project, more than 30 service members from the USS

Environmental Committee and Saipan Young Professionals.
MINA generously provided volunteers with t-shirts, trash bags, gloves, and bottled water. The Chamber would like to
extend thanks to Godfather’s Bar for providing complimentary appetizers for the welcoming reception and for the use

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce and Island Training Solutions presented a powerful customer-service themed training “Customer Satisfaction is Worthless; Customer Loyalty is Priceless” last Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Kanoa Resort Saipan. This one-day training focused on the developing of employee skills needed to communicate professionalism, gain respect, and enhance customer relationships with excellence. Glenn Policare, Director of Operations of Kanoa Resort Saipan said “The training is opening up a lot of eyes, showing positive opportunities and shows room for improvement not just for our business, but for the many businesses that are represented here today”. Another participant Janet Aguon, Enterprise Sales Manager of IT&E Guam said “This training brings us back to the fundamentals of customer loyalty and how to establish that loyalty”. Participants learned how to identify their own emotions and subsequent reactions for improved performance; how to better manage relationships by negotiating the needs of others; and improve skills to help others increase capabilities. A major theme in this seminar was to enhance retention of customers and employees, a major challenge that local businesses currently face. “I am excited at the response of our participants. These employees are genuinely invested in growing their knowledge to improve and grow their businesses. We all have a similar goal and that is to ensure that we can take care of our employees and that our employees can take care of our guests to create and retain loyal customers. This is the goal for our small island community and we work towards that goal through trainings like this. Through the Chamber, Island Training Solutions has reached hundreds of employees in just the past year. “I look forward to future collaborations” said Gitomer-Certified Advisor and Island Training Solutions Owner, Jim Arenovski. The Chamber will host its final seminar for the year on Thursday, November 15, 2018 focusing on staff motivation and development. For more information or to register for this training, please contact [email protected].
