Kaleo PilancaWritten By L. Goo
When I started writing this feature about Kaleo, it confirmed why he was chosen for this month’s issue. As I prepared to call him, I saw a television program which featured Pilanca and his dad Moon, as they prepared to spend some time together at the beach, surfing, paddling, and just having a great time! I immediately contacted him, only to find him busy doing homework and orches-trating bath time with his young sons. His response was, “Can I call you later?” He later sent a text to let me know that it was getting late, and he needed to tuck them in bed, so he would contact me even later.

Pilanca is the true “Mr. Aloha.” When we surfed together, and even on a photoshoot, he warmly greeted everyone with “Aloha.” Yes, everyone. However, Pilanca defers this title to another, and says that Uncle George Kam is Mr. Aloha. Pilanca lives life to the fullest. Every mo-ment is endowed with a good spirit, posi-tive vibes, feel good energy, and the glow, the “Nahenahe”. Growing up in the Waiahole Valley Road on the Windward side of Oahu, Pilanca has surfed his home breaks, including Kualoa Point, Rainbows, BB‘s, Crouchings, Kapapa Island, Sugar Mills, Kaaawa Lefts and Kahana Bay. Pilanca observed, “Eastside surfers wait patiently for southwest winds (Kona Winds) so we can have ‘glassy waves’, as they only happen probably two weeks out of the year! So, when it does happen, I not going lie, I call in sick!” This Kamehameha Schools graduate attended college in Washington, bringing his surfboard so that he could surf, while he attended Eastern Washington State Uni-versity. This was in spite of the fact that there was no available surf for hundreds of miles. However, his board was available, while he earned a degree in recreational therapy. After coming home with his degree in hand, he worked under the “Red Roof ” in Kaneohe, at the State Hospital. “Working with criminally insane pa-tients, I had to act crazier than them. They would say, stay away from that guy, he is a little bit off!” His ohana includes his wife Carrie “CJ” Pilanca, who is a flight attendant and business manager of their company, KP Entertainment, along with his blended ohana, Christoper, Kanoelani, Moon, Nikki, Hazel, Kainalu and Kaena. Pilanca remarked, “It’s a ‘yours, mines, and ours’ ohana, just like the Brady Bunch. Just add water and shake ‘em up.” The ever-active Pilanca also makes it a priority to have “our time” with his wife CJ. They find the time, in between her taking care of the kids, being his partner in business, a DJ, and an event planner,
as well as her job in the air. How is that for having a busy family life? Kaleo is also working on a new television show, “Ka-leo‘s Ohana Adventures,” which is set for presentation this spring on OC16.When asked how they met, Kaleo and CJ responded with two similar but different answers! She said:“I met Kaleo at a fundraiser golf tour-nament. My sister Wendy is the one to ‘blame’ for my meeting Kaleo. She asked me if I could help her at the tournament, and I ended up helping with the set-up of the banquet room. I needed a ride back to one of the holes, and Wendy was unable to drive me back, so she told me to catch a ride with Kaleo. I looked at her and said, "Are you crazy, I don‘t even know who that is!" Her reply was,"He‘s the guy on tv, radio and stuff.” I just gave her a crazy look and said, "I still don’t know who that is!” She walked over to him and asked him if he could give me a ride back out to the course. He said yes. Meanwhile I was standing there in disbelief that she would even suggest that I ride with a stranger! All I could hear in my head was my mother saying to me, “Stranger danger! Stranger danger!” “I waited as Kaleo filled up his beverage before going to the golf cart. I remember that we argued about who was going to drive the cart, and I finally sat in the pas-senger seat. Kaleo was busy fumbling with his phone and his drink, so I decided to press the gas pedal. He had on his shades (and made sly) but I knew that he was trying to check me out. The next thing I know, I almost fell out of the golf cart because we hit the curb. Whiplash! Fast forward to a week later, when I started getting Facebook event invites from him, for all his future fundraisers and his big comedy show. I asked my other girlfriends who were friends with him on Facebook, whether they had gotten invited too, but they all said no. So, if Kaleo ever says that he sent out invites to all of the ladies, and that I was the only one who showed up, he‘s
lying!”
He said:I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was at a golf fundraiser, dressed up in char-acter, as a guy called "Uncle Moki.” I was asked to drive the golf cart and to enter-tain, by heckling the golfers, and to just be an ambassador of Aloha. I would blow my conch shell when the golfers putted. I was sipping on my drink having fun. Out of nowhere, I heard Wendy Pitner (who later became my sister-in-law) say, “Carrie, catch a ride with that guy!" I heard Carrie say, "Who is that guy?” She didn't know who I was, but I turned on the charm. She came walking towards me like an angel. Her hips swayed with the coconut trees, her smile tantalizing… I just knew I was going sweep her off her feet, and end this with a bang! Hole in one! Nah, nah… Actually, we had our first lovers spat right there, the very first time we met. We argued about who should drive. Being the man, I knew I had to drive and be in charge, and as we drove off, I dropped my phone between my legs, and tried to get it. Meanwhile, I lost track of

where I was going, drove off the curb, over some roots, and almost into the water hazard! CJ screamed, so I comforted her, made sure she was ok, and made sure she didn't have whiplash, because she was holding her neck. I really don't know what I did that day, but it must have worked, because after that, she couldn't get enough of me. I began to see this lovely young woman at all of my fundraisers. One after the next. She was stalking me!Actually, I would let many wahines know about my fundraisers, but CJ was the only one that showed up. Although she was stalking me, I guess I really liked and wanted her there…”Having worked at Shriners Hospital for Children, Pilanca uses that experience when spending time with his dad. Pilanca takes his dad, Moon, to the beach every chance they get, at least weekly. “It’s therapy for my dad, as he is living with Parkinson’s Disease.”Pilanca explains simply, “The brain and muscles do not coordinate together. The brain tells him to move his arm, but the arm doesn't listen.”On these outings, the younger Pilanca as-sists his dad onto a longboard and pushes him through the gentle waves. He coaches him through exercises with a canoe paddle, while his dad keeps a cadence and switches to alternate sides. All the while, his dad recalls his own time in the canoe. It is time well-spent for both of them.Kaleo is a man in perpetual motion. Whether he is taking his keiki to school or “Pops” to the beach, emceeing events, offi-ciating weddings (yes he is also licensed to
perform weddings in the State of Hawaii), planning the next comedy event, or doing homework with the kids, he never stops! Additionally, he is now performing on the Hawaiian airwaves, with a new primetime (6:00pm to midnight shift) show, on Ha-waii‘s number- one radio station, 98.5 FM/ Island, and is a game show host on “Play Smart Hawaii.”
Pilanca in the M2O Paddleboard race
When asked who his comic inspiration is, he replied, “George Burns.” Pilanca explained, “He was smooth on his delivery, clean, and the crowd loved him! He did this till he was 100 years old! What could be better?” Other comedians that he admires are Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy.Pilanca is an island entertainment treasure, and we all hope that he will be sharing his brand of “Aloha” until he is 100 years old!

The 10th Annual Da Hui Beach Clean Up was held on Saturday, November 22, 2014. Staging area was at Turtle Bay Resort and cleaned a dozen groups were formed to clean up beaches from Turtle Bay to Haleiwa Beach Park. DaHui Director Mahina Chillingworth said, “We picked up approximately 3 tons of Opala ranging from old stoves, tires, car batteries, beer bottles and endless amounts of cig butts. The army of more than 400 people came out to help us malama our beautiful beaches. High school students from Leilehua, Mililani, Kahuku and Pearl City all came out to lend a hand and walked away with some sweet prizes! Free hamburger/cheeseburger lunches were handed out and live music echoed across the beautiful grounds of Turtle Bay Resorts!Chillingworth expressed the organizations gratitude saying, “Mahalo to all our local sponsors too, especially Turtle Bay Resort, Loves Bakery, Ku‘au Rescue, Paradise Bev-erages, TNT Tinting, Da Sound Guy, Roll Offs Hawaii, Planet Sun and more, for all their generous contributions.” “This is the 10th Anniversary of our Da Hui Beach Clean Up, founded by Kala Alexander in 2004. We appreciate everyone for supporting our mission to Malama ‘Aina. Not just our mission but for many others as well! Mahalo to our “co-pilots” in this annual clean up, Eddie Aikau Foundation, Na Kama Kai, Kokua Hawaii Foundation, and of course Sustaianable Coastlines who’ve been with us for many years doing what they do best...keeping our beaches, parks and oceans clean.” In conjunction with the clean up here on the North Shore, Da Hui Japan, also collaborated by cleaning up their beaches as well. Chillingworth commented, “We are looking forward to a more international wide clean up next year in 2015!

WANNING, Hainan/CHINA (Tues-day, December 9, 2014) - Chelsea Williams (AUS) has defeated Kelia Moniz (HAW) to claim her maiden ASP Women’s World Longboard Title at the GoPro World Longboard Championships, China hosted by Wanning (WLC). Near perfect 3 to 4 foot surf provided the perfect canvas for the world’s best longboarders to fight for the sport’s ultimate prize, but it was Wil-liams, the form surfer of the event who was the last one standing. Remarkably Moniz and Williams have met in the final of the GoPro WLC four years in a row, proving that these two ath-letes really are on top of world at the mo-ment. Their friendly rivalry sees them now at two wins a piece in the Final in China. Williams’ win today was a long time coming after finishing runner-up to the ASP World Longboard Title four times. In the first half of today’s Final Williams was struggling to adapt to the conditions and it seemed her fifth runner-up finish was
minutes away, but the Gold Coast surfer struck and did some of the best nose riding of the whole event mixed with rail carves. Moniz caught a last minute wave, but just missed out on the required score, leaving Williams out the back to ride her wave in as an ASP World Longboard Champion. “Did that just happen? I can’t believe it!” Williams said. “I’ve wanted to win a World Longboard Title since I found out it existed. For a long time people have been telling me I deserve to win, now I finally believe them. I’m so happy and thankful for the support of my family, friends and sponsors. It was an awesome Final, Kelia (Moniz) is so good, we have a fun rivalry going and I’m glad that I got her back.” Moniz is a two-time ASP World Long-board Champion after winning this event the past two years and today after losing by a mere 0.02 *** she was gracious in defeat. Moniz finished the event with the highest wave score, and highest heat total from her
Round 1 heat, and hinted that her and Wil-liams’ rivalry wasn’t over yet. “If it wasn’t me winning there’s no one I’d rather see win than Chelsea (Williams),” Moniz said. “She’s a great surfer, she scored a 9 in the final and deserved to win. I’m not too disappointed, it would have been nice to win again — Chelsea and I can just meet in the Final again next year.” Lindsay Steinriede (USA), 2011 ASP World Longboard Champion used her graceful and polished brand of surfing to advance into the Semifinals where she ran into a rampaging Williams. Steinriede was the last natural footed surfer left in the draw when she won her Quarterfinal and advanced into the Semis and leaves the 2014 GoPro WLC ranked equal 3rd in the world. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had in a heat and I lost!” Steinriede said. “I’ve got so much respect for Chelsea’s surfing and who she is as a person, with either one of

us getting into the Final I was happy. I’m really happy to have made the Semifinals and to get that far in the event the fact that we had really good waves also feels good.” Chloe Calmon (BRA) lost out in an action packed Semifinal against Moniz meaning the young Brazilian exits the event ranked equal 3rd in the world. Calmon has worked extremely hard and has improved on her 5th place finish from last year. She was one of the most interesting and excit-ing surfers to watch all event long, but she let her nerves get the best of her in the Semifinals. “I had an incredible event, but I still wanted to go further,” Calmon said. “I improved on my position from last year which was my goal so I’m happy, but losing so close to the Semifinal did make me a little sad after the heat — I’m happy now. It just wasn’t my time to be in the final and I’m going to try and come back and go big-ger and better next year.”

Your boat or surfboard has a crack, ding or shatter in it, or its broken in half. Many times, besides having the time to fix it, we just lack the ability to re-pair our favorite water vehicle. Makai Magazine has compiled a list of boat/surfboard/canoe builders, repair technicians, and manufacturers in Hawai‘i. If your board or boat is broke, contact one of these shops, and they can direct you in to getting a quality repair, and back in the water as soon as possible! Be sure to call them first, and then get a quote, and a date regarding the turnaround time and completion.

Mahalo for the compliments on last months cover, acutally it was the work of ten years of covers, of ten years of fabulous people, with ten years of talented photogra-phers, that included Cory Lum, Natalie Walker (who shot Richard “Buffalo” Keaulana on our first cover) and David Murphey, that have captured these special people, featured on the cover and inside, and have made a difference here in Hawaii and the World! Mahalo to all of the photographers, and writers, advertisers and everyone who made Makai Magazine the Premire Ocean Lifestyle magazine in Hawaii. Ten years ago, gracing our cover for our second cover was Donna “Kahiwa” Ka-hakui, a photo shot by photographer Cory Lum. Donna continues to paddle in cham-pionship crews, paddled every channel around the Hawaiian Islands, and even up to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, also know as “Papahanaumokuakea”. Cory Lum

continues to be a photojournalist, a com-mercial & advertising in photographer, and has mastered his tecnique in ceramics as a dual talent artist. In this second issue that ran with 40 pages, also featured Kimo Kauihou, still challenging Makaha Point, and running his surfboard glassing business. Also in the grand issue, Damon Jones, the former Iolani School waterpolo star, lives on the East Coast, graduated from the Air Force Academy and is currently an Officer in the United States Air Force. Each month we will flashback to the is-sue that published ten years ago, and take you back and keep you current on where these great people are today!
