Why wage war ?

► Protection of self► Protection of

Society/country► Protection of ones way of life &

beliefs► Enforce a

system/belief► For land and

richesCompulsory or an Option ?

Page 5: Islamic Concept of Jihad

► Muslims in general regard Islam as areligion of peace and consider war

as an anti-Islamic idea.

► Islam doesn’tproposepeaceatallcosts. There may be situations

where war may become mandatory

► West presents it as adangerousconcept that must be

removed from the minds of Muslims

Page 6: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Islam :A complete way of life

That is why it appears to be so dangerous to a certain group of oppressors

Islam encompasses Political, military, diplomatic, economic, social & spiritual aspects of life

Page 7: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Examples of Battles in Quran

►Quran from the very beginning speaks on the concept of war. It provides examples of wars between previous nations and early Muslim era, so that we can derive significant lessons

Page 8: Islamic Concept of Jihad

A people who were too afraid !

► There was a group of people who were such cowards that when attacked, they fled

instead of defending themselves. God did not like this act and punished those people by bringing death on them all. (Baqra, 243)

Death comes only when Allah wills it and running away is not a guarantee of life

Page 9: Islamic Concept of Jihad

How Bani Israel attained superiority

► After the death of Musa (AH), Bani Israel lost their sense of direction and thus lost their strength. They were attacked by an alien nation that killed them in thousands and forced them to pay tribute. B.Israel asked Hazrat Shamoeel (AH) to pray to Allah to give them a king under whom they may be able to wage war and free themselves. They assured the Prophet of their promise to wage war

► God appointed Jaloot who gave them victory against Taloot. Daud AS with his bravery killed Taloot and later become King (Baqra 246- 251)

Jihad paved the way for the golden period of Bani Israel when Daud (AS) conquered Jerusalem

Page 10: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Lessons from Badr, Uhud & Khandaq► Badr

Tawwakal on Allah alone Strength in numbers not

essential► Uhud

Obedience and discipline Face difficulties with fortitude

► Khandaq Trust Allah for he is the only

guide A Muslim’s faith shall be

tested

Quranic References on

JihadQuran builds up the concept of War in a very logical and convincing manner

Page 12: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Why Allah wants war► Fight only for the cause of Allah to end

persecution (Baqra, 190-193)

Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight against you.

Fight them till persecution is no more and religion is only for Allah

Page 13: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Why is war necessary► To prevent chaos in the world

(Baqra 251)

If Allah had not been repelling one set of people by means of another, the earth would have been filled with chaos. But Allah is bountiful to the world ( and so repels chaos in this way( Baqra 251)

Page 14: Islamic Concept of Jihad

► To save oppressed people (Al Nisa 75-)

and Muslims, why should you, then, not fight in the way of Allah for the sake of those helpless men, women and children, who being weak, have been oppressed, and are crying out, “ Our Lord, deliver us from this land whose people are unjust oppressors, and raise a protector for us by your grace and a helper from Thyself”. Those, who follow the way of faith fight in the way of Allah, and those who follow the way of disbelief fight in the way of Zalimeen. So fight against the helpers of Satan. In fact the Satan’s schemes are weak

Whom to fight

►Some conditions to fight are given in Al Nisa 89-91

Page 17: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Prophet (PBUH) should wage war alone??

► Allah tells Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that if the munafiqeen and some faint hearted Muslims do not assisst him then he should start Jihad all alone

!! (Al Nisa 84)

So, O Prophet fight (alone) in the way of Allah : you are accountable for none but your own person; You should however, urge on the believers to fight. It may be that Allah will soon break the strength of the disbelievers, for Allah is the strongest in might and his punishment is most severe.

Page 18: Islamic Concept of Jihad

How to support the war ?

► Muslims are ordered to spend in the cause of Allah and help the Ghazi since not doing sowould be tantamount to national suicide.

(Baqra, 195)

Spend in cause of Allah and not be cast by your hands into ruin (Baqra 195)

Page 19: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Do not be afraid of jihad & death

►During the discussion of battle of Uhud, Allah explains that muslims should not be afraid of death (Aal e Imran 4:145)

No human being can ever die save by Allah’s permission, and the time of death has been pre-ordained. Whoever makes efforts with the intention of the reward of this world, We will reward him in this world, and whoever makes efforts with the intention of the reward of the hereafter, will get it, and we will certainly reward the grateful servants.

Page 20: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Do not be afraid of jihad & death

O Prophet, Have u not seen the condition of those who were told to hold their hands a while from war and establish Salat and Zakat. Now that they have been commanded to fight, some of them fear the enemy as they should fear Allah, or even more than that; they say, “Our Lord, why have you prescribed fighting for us ? Why have you not given us a brief rest. Say to them, “The pleasures of this worldly life are trifling and the life of the hereafter is much better for a man who fears Allah, and you shall not be wronged in the least. As to death, it will overtake you wherever you may be, even though you be in fortified towers” (Al Nisa 77-78)

Page 21: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Show fortitude and steadfastness

► Muslims are being told that they are not the only ones who fought for their prophets. (Aal e Imran 4:146)

Reward for people who fall in battle : Shahadat (martyrdom)

►Fear of death causes cowardice. For Muslims the idea of death on battlefield is made attractive by the concept of Shahadat - gaining eternal life (Aal e Imran 156-157)

What is the guarantee of victory

► Allah’s help is the only guarantee of victory (Aal e Imran 160)

If Allah helps you, no power can overcome you, and if He forsakes you, who is there, then, after Him to help you? Therefore the true believers should trust in Allah alone. (Aal e Imran 160)

Page 29: Islamic Concept of Jihad

Example of Jihad set by Khulafa-e-RashideenHazrat Abu Bakr

(RA)

Page 30: Islamic Concept of Jihad

► Immediately after the death of Prophet, all Arabia rose in revolt against Islam. Several imposters took up the mantle of false prophet hood. The new caliph was subjected to an intense round of trial

and tribulation in one of the most critical period of Islam

► His first test was to dispatch the army of Usama B Zaid(RA)

► He then formed 11 armies to fight the apostates

Page 31: Islamic Concept of Jihad

► Soon all problems inside Arabia were overcome. But the caliph wasnot used to restingunnecessarily. He

immediately formed two armies to clash head on with the two mightiest empires of the world

– Persia and Byzantine - simultaneouly

Abu Bakr (RA) ordered Khalid b Walid (RA) to “ Proceed to Iraq. Start operations in the region of Uballa. Fight the Persians and the people who inhabit their land.

Your objective is Hira”Khalid bin Walid (RA) Wrote to the Persian

Governer: “Submit to Islam and be safe. Or agree to the payment of Jizya, and you and your people

will be under our protection; else you will have only yourself to blame for the consequences, for I bring a people who desire death as ardently as you desire

life”
