Islamic Awareness Month at Duke University

Duke University student Mert Arkan is double majoring in economics and political science and plans to attend law school upon graduating. An active member of the Turkish American community, Mert Arkan has been involved with Duke's Muslim Students Association (MSA) since 2011 and has served in the past as the organization's publicity chair.

Islamic Awareness Month at Duke University

Run by students, the MSA serves the needs of Duke's Muslim community by organizing events and activities related to Islam and various Muslim cultures. One of the most dynamic student groups on campus, MSA hosts a number of signature events, including a Campus Wide Fast for Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan and an annual Islamic Awareness Month in the spring of each year. These events attract hundreds of Duke students, faculty, and staff. Islamic Awareness Month comprises a number of different religious, cultural, academic, and social events that promote a greater understanding and appreciation of issues related to Islam.

Islamic Awareness Month at Duke University

In 2013, Islamic Awareness Month focused largely on art and culture, featuring a Calligraphy Night where participants learned how to compose Arabic calligraphy with the help of Professor Muhammad Habib. It also featured an art exhibit with paintings and calligraphy by Dr. Huda Totonji of Harvard titled Expressing Faith: Islam Inspired Art.
