“Learning at ISH is a rigorous, continuous process where, through purposeful thinking, experience, enquiry and enjoyment we develop the values, skills, knowledge and understanding to be learners for life.” - International School of The Hague, January 2013

Welcome back after what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable break. Learning has already been at the top of our agenda as all Primary and Secondary staff were involved in a ‘Professional Development’ day on the 7th January. For the first part of the morning we listened to a presentation from a guest speaker on ‘Enquiry Based Learning’ and it was reassuring to know that the approach we adopt in the Primary School is in line with the latest educational thinking.

In March we will receive an accreditation visit by a team from the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) when we will be judged against nine criteria as being at the stage of Developing or Mastering. As part of this process we are currently carrying out a self-evaluation that is focused on children’s learning and development academically, internationally and as people. We embarked on the first stage of the self-evaluation last term by reflecting as a Primary school on our definition of learning. After much debate and soul searching the updated statement you see above was agreed. We also have a team of volunteers who have produced an ‘Action Plan’ that will culminate in the production of a ‘Self-Evaluation Report’ giving our own judgements with supporting evidence. Part of the ‘Action Plan’ is to ensure that all stakeholders understand how we use the IPC as a tool to help us develop a learning focused school and one element of this will be an ‘Open Day’ when you can visit the school and see learning in action as well as attending a number of workshops. Please put the date in your diaries now:

A ‘Celebration of Learning’ at the International School of The Hague on Tuesday, 19 February 2013 from 08:30 - 11:00

There will also be information about the IPC on our web site starting with an IPC quiz so that you can test your knowledge now and compare it in a few weeks time http://www.ishthehague.nl/content/ipc-quiz-master

Mr. Rae ContinuedOn Wednesday, 16 January Pam Mundy from Fieldwork Education will be in school as a follow up to her visit last year and will be working with the children and staff on ’Looking for Learning’. Also next week there will be a music workshop for year 6. The following week the Dutch team are taking the Year 6 children to Binnenhof and Year 2 are visiting the Clara Maria cheese farm. On Wednesday 22nd January the Pema Lama is visiting the Secondary school and Year 6 children are being given the opportunity to interview him, which we are hoping to video and place on our web site

Congratulations to our music teacher Dina Titan who has won a scholarship to do a Doctorate commencing September 2013. There were only a few places available and a large number of well-qualified applicants, which makes this a great achievement.

Have an enjoyable weekend
