PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

COMMITTEE MEMBER UPDATES

Spring has sprung! It’s that time of year where trees start blooming, the day are warmer, and everything seems

to be coming back to life! It’s also an exciting time in our industry, as construction documents become reality

before our very eyes. It can be stressful at times, but we are beginning to see the fruits of our labor in all of the

buildings going up and the old buildings getting a new start. That, to me, is very rewarding!

I would like to thank Dr. Stephanie Taylor for her presentation this month on Learning to Love Microbes. It was

quite different from our typical presentations, in that it we got to learn about the medical side of the HVAC world

. We learned a great deal about how microbe diversity is the key to a healthy living environment for humans. As mechanical engineers, it

is our duty to recognize this and incorporating this knowledge into our designs and equipment. The presentation was EXCELLENT, and we

would highly recommend it to other chapters and organizations. Thank you again, Dr. Taylor!

February was a VERY BUSY month for Student Activities…

Jim Rossetti, Tyler Tjong and Joe Fox attended 2 events at NJIT – one Resume Workshop and one Practice Interview workshop. They met

with many students and were able to help them with their job/internship searches and explained to them that it would be beneficial for

them to join a professional organization like ASHRAE. Our Student Activities committee also attended two career fairs – one at Stevens IT

and one at Princeton University. We were able to reach 30+ students and show them the importance of ASHRAE and the benefits that it

offers to both themselves and their careers moving forward.

Stevens IT is also interested in re-activating their student chapter, so we are working with their student body and faculty to make that

happen over the next couple of months! We are very excited about this opportunity!

The Devils/Bruins hockey game was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out! Also, a BIG THANK YOU to NJ ASHRAE for

sponsoring the event!

The next YEA event will be the New York Red Bulls soccer game on Wednesday, May 8th. They will be playing the Montreal Impact.

Please look out for a flyer with more details over the next couple weeks!

A couple reminders…

Don’t forget to “like” our new LinkedIn page! See here: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ashrae-nj/

On Thursday, April 18th, we are having a PDH Day where you can sit for multiple presentations for 4.0 PDH hours towards your license.

The event will be at the same location as last year (at Daikin’s office in Jersey City). Please see the flyer located in this newsletter for more

information.

This month’s meeting is on Tuesday, April 2nd and is Student & YEA Night and we will be hearing from Benny Walsh of Price Industries,

who will be presenting Displacement Ventilation in Schools. School districts around the country have adopted Displacement Ventilation

as the standard design for their school systems and Benny will be teaching us everything we need know about this hot topic! See you all

then and we are looking forward to another great turnout!

Many thanks to Dr. Stephanie

Taylor for her presentation on

“Learn to love microbes”. The

overall theme was maintaining a

space RH between 40-60% because

it reduces the ease of transmission

for infection and the aggression of

bacteria/viruses. Very informative

and interesting thanks Dr. Taylor!

CROSQ RELEASES NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION

WITH THE INTERNATIONAL CODE COUNCIL AND ASHRAE

ATLANTA (Mar. 21, 2019) – The International Code Council, ASHRAE, the CARICOM Secretariat Energy

Unit and the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) announced today the

release of new standards for energy efficient buildings for its Member States. The 2018 CARICOM Regional

Energy Efficiency Building Code (CREEBC), which will cover both commercial and residential construction, is a joint effort by the CROSQ, the Code Council and ASHRAE.

“These standards for energy efficient buildings reflect the unique energy requirements of tropical environments

and will ultimately increase adoption rates of more effectual technologies for renewable energy and energy

conservation,” commented the CEO of CROSQ, Mr. Deryck Omar. “The adoption of these codes will go a long

way toward allowing our members to mitigate the impacts of a changing climate. It also demonstrates the

importance of bringing quality measures into the region’s energy sector and the potential benefits that can accrue when that happens.”

The CREEBC, which was developed through a collaboration between the CROSQ and the Energy Unit of the

CARICOM Secretariat, is meant to meet the specific needs of nations in the Caribbean and other countries with

tropical climates. It establishes minimum energy efficiency requirements for buildings, including the building

envelope, cooling system, ventilation, pumping, lighting and the service water-heating systems.

Head of the Energy Unit at the CARICOM Secretariat, Dr. Devon Gardner, said, “The CREEBC is envisioned to

lead to an era of better quality building designs within the Caribbean Community, noting that the ability of

buildings to minimize the energy requirements for the services for which they were intended would reduce the

exposure to climate and disaster risks.” He stated, as an example, that “Energy-efficient measures and systems,

such as daytime lighting and improvements in ventilation, can facilitate the comfort of occupants in buildings even during periods of natural disaster-related stress on the electricity grids.”

CROSQ RELEASES NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION

WITH THE INTERNATIONAL CODE COUNCIL AND ASHRAE CONT.

We were pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with our colleagues at the CROSQ to help adapt

the Code Council’s latest energy standards to help their members improve the efficiency and sustainability of

their buildings,” said Code Council CEO Dominic Sims, CBO. “Our codes are not one-size-fits-all. They are a

starting point for developing standards that meet the individual needs of regions around the world.”

“Improving energy efficiency is a global challenge, with buildings professionals serving as a crucial contributor

toward the establishment of standards that affect building systems operations,” said 2018-2019 ASHRAE

President Sheila J. Hayter, P.E. “The CREEBC and ASHRAE’s collaboration with partnering organizations

represent our long standing dedication to global sustainability and leadership in use of integrated building design resources.”

The development of the CREEBC is part of the ongoing implementation of the Caribbean Sustainable Energy

Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERM), a CARICOM program aimed at increasing political will and private sector

input for the adoption of more effective technologies for renewable energy, energy conservation and efficiency.

ASHRAE SEEKS PRESENTATIONS FOR 2020 WEBCAST

ATLANTA (March 14, 2019) – ASHRAE has announced a call for three presenters to share knowledge

about the effects of humidity to a global audience in its 2020 ASHRAE Webcast, “Effects of Low Humidity and

High Humidity on People, Buildings and Energy Performance.”

“Humidity has a substantial impact on the comfort and health of building occupants,” said Steve Piccolo, chair

of Webcast Ad Hoc committee. “Preserving the structural integrity of buildings and protecting the contents

also requires proper humidity control. This Webcast will explore the effects of humidity on buildings,

occupants, and contents in a variety of uses. The program will also discuss the impact humidity has on energy

consumption of the HVAC system and effective ways to control humidity.

The CTTC seeks three qualified presenters. Participation in the webcast requires a substantial time

commitment. Presenters must be able to commit to the following schedule:

August 2019 - CTTC Webcast Ad Hoc Committee 1-Day Planning Meeting at ASHRAE Headquarters to determine the

Webcast program and production schedule

September 2019 - Presenters prepare Presentation Outlines

October 2019 - Presenters prepare Draft Scripts & Graphics

November through December 2019 - Peer Review of Draft Scripts by Volunteer Panel and Ad Hoc Committee

December 2019 through February 2020 - Presenters prepare and coordinate Final Drafts (Scripts and Graphics)

February 2020 - Final Graphics & Scripts prepared by Presenters & Graphics Editor

April 2020 - Rehearsal & Live Webcast – Multi-day meeting in Atlanta

The deadline to submit webcast presentation materials for consideration is April 5. For questions and to

submit presentation materials for consideration, email [email protected].

GOVERNMENT OUTREACH

ASHRAE volunteer members met with their state and provincial representatives in Georgia, Idaho,

Indiana, Kentucky, New Mexico, Iowa, Texas, and Ontario.

Some highlights from those outreach events are below:

In Georgia, ASHRAE members met with three legislators and two Chiefs of Staff. They also

visited Senator Sally Harrell’s office, whose district includes the location of the new ASHRAE

headquarters.

(L–R): Ali Dawud, Vernon Ryle, Henry Slack, Parker Brunelle (Vice President), Doug Tucker, and

Meghan McNulty (GAC Chair)

In Idaho, ASHRAE members met with 16 legislators, including the President Pro Tempore, House

Minority Leader and Chair for Commerce and Human Resources.

(L–R): Ron Howell, Mike Jones, Russ Pratt, and Troy James

GLOBAL GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

IPCC Releases Report on the Impacts of Global Warming

On October 6, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change approved a special report entitled “Global Warming of

1.5°C.” This report assesses the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and how those impacts

would change if global warming increased instead to 2°C.

Under the Paris Agreement, countries committed to “Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well

below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-

industrial levels.”

The IPCC report found significant differences between the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C compared with 2°C,

including extreme weather events, sea level rise, and the irreversible loss of ecosystems such as coral reefs.

The report also explained the difficulties of limiting global warming to 1.5°C: “The report finds that limiting global

warming to 1.5°C would require “rapid and far-reaching” transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and

cities. Global net human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) would need to fall by about 45 percent from 2010

levels by 2030, reaching ‘net zero’ around 2050. This means that any remaining emissions would need to be balanced by

removing CO2 from the air.”

Energy Efficiency Day 2018

Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) introduced a Senate resolution that designated October 5,

2018 as Energy Efficiency Day and recognized the “economic and environmental benefits that have been driven by

private sector innovation and Federal energy efficiency policies put in place over the past 4 decades.” The resolution

had a total of 21 bipartisan cosponsors and passed the Senate unanimously last week.

GOVERNMENT OUTREACH

In Indiana, ASHRAE members met with seven legislative offices, including Senator Messmer, the majority floor leader,

environmental affairs chair, and an ASHRAE Member, who was a past ASHRAE Evansville chapter president.

(L–R): Ryan Smalligan, Tom Heintzberger, James Arnold, and Senator Messmer

In Iowa, the chapter sponsored an exhibit table in the capitol, where legislators were presented with a packet of

information about ASHRAE.

(L–R): Matt Swenka, Kit Cartwright, Matt Jesson, and Matt Gumm
