DEAN’S MESSAGE
Greetings. It gives me great pleasure to acquaint you with
the advantage of investing one year of your career into
the Post Graduate Programme in Management at the ISB.
Our programme, a good balance of theoretical
fundamentals and practical exposure, is designed to
provide young leaders with the knowledge and the
confi dence to accomplish their objectives, both in their
careers and their lives.
We are a young and energetic school, ranked consistently
among the world’s best schools, according to the Global
MBA rankings of Financial Times, London. There are
many reasons for this, but I think the most important one
is our commitment to providing students with learning
that is relevant to them and helps shape their careers in
the rapidly changing global economic landscape. We
have had the benefi t of strong academic associations
with some of the top-ranked international business
schools, who have helped us design a programme that
is truly global. Further, we are highly research focused.
Our faculty continues to work extensively in their areas of
expertise to further research, increasingly with a focus on

YOUR ONE YEAR AT THE ISB
THE ONE-YEAR PGP
The PGP is a comprehensive full-time residential
programme designed to help you return to work with
a competitive edge. It packs the rigours of a two-year
programme into a single year of intense learning. The
programme allows you diverse learning opportunities
through interactions with global faculty, a highly qualifi ed
peer group, experiential learning, industry interventions,
international exposure, and more. The pedagogy is
designed to help you leverage your work experience.
The programme format ensures that you get back to your
career in just one year, while also saving on an extra
year’s opportunity cost.

UNIFIED PROCESSES ACROSS CAMPUSES
The ISB offers the PGP concurrently from two campuses -
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Mohali, Punjab.
The two campuses also follow unifi ed processes for
admissions and placements. So you are assured of the
same learning, career opportunities and alumni network,
irrespective of which campus you study in. Both the
campuses integrate world-class academic and residential

“I EXPECTED MY LEARNING TO BE LIMITED TO THE CLASSROOMS. BUT WHEN I CAME TO ISB, I REALISED THAT I COULD LEARN JUST AS MUCH BY INTERACTING WITH VISITING ENTREPRENEURS, VCs ANDsBUSINESSMEN.”
SUBRAMANI ‘SUBBU’ RAMACHANDRAPPACLASS OF 2004, CMD OF RICHCORE LIFESCIENCES
Shortly after setting up Richcore Lifesciences, Subbu decided
to undertake his biggest investment as an entrepreneur - a
postgraduate programme in management at the ISB. He was
clear about what he wanted to learn from ISB, and planned to
apply his learning at his one-man set-up in Bangalore, which
he continued to operate by travelling to Bangalore every
weekend during the programme. But the learning he found
at ISB was far more than what he’d expected. He utilised
every possible opportunity available at ISB, because he was
starting to see the benefi ts of his ever expanding perspective
on the growth of Richcore Lifesciences. His interaction
with professors and peers helped him discover immense
possibilities. The international B-plan competitions he won
helped reshape his business model and the accompanying
prize money served as a much-needed capital infusion into
his venture. The alumni network introduced him to several
entrepreneurs who shared their knowledge and expertise
freely. ISB’s industry network also introduced him to venture
capitalists and even strategic business partners, and helped
him take his company to great heights. Today, seven years
after completing his PGP, Richcore Lifesciences has become
a multi-crore global business. Subbu admits that his learning
from ISB was not limited to the one year spent there. In fact, he
believes it’s a continuous process that helps him even today.
After all, one of ISB’s faculty continues to be on the board of
Richcore Lifesciences.

“IN A FINANCE COURSE, YOU LEARN ABOUT FORMULAE, ABOUT COMPANIES AND MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS. BUT BUILDING YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVES? THAT’S WHERE INTERACTIONS WITH FACULTY AND YOUR PEERS COME IN.”
ADHERAJ SINGH, CLASS OF 2005,INVESTMENT PROFESSIONAL AT KOHLBERG KRAVIS ROBERTS PRIVATE EQUITY
Adheraj was an employee with Infosys Hyderabad, when
he got an opportunity to visit the ISB campus across the
street. It was for a session that introduced him to the fi eld
of fi nance. Recognising the learning opportunities ISB had
to offer, he decided to apply to the full-time programme.
With his meritorious background and the conviction of his
vision, Adheraj secured an admission to ISB in 2004. Once
here, over the core and elective terms, he improved his
understanding of fi nance, gearing up for a career in Private
Equity. It helped that he got to spend a lot of time discussing
PE with Finance faculty. The faculty had conducted extensive
research in this space and, having worked closely with
global investment banks, could share rich insights into the
industry. He also learned the art of thinking through and
breaking down abstract problems, fi nding elegant solutions,
and presenting them in a manner that would be easy to
understand and act on. And living and working with a
diverse set of peers from different industry, education, and
cultural backgrounds gave him a world view. So when the
placements season arrived, his one year of learning and
growing translated into a skill set and a mature outlook that
PE funds valued highly. Today, after a successful stint at
Morgan Stanley Private Equity (Hongkong), and the Kohlberg
Kravis Roberts Private Equity subsequently, Adheraj
continues to apply all his learning from his one year at ISB.
10
AIMED TO GROOM EFFECTIVE LEADERS
The PGP curriculum was designed to include several
interventions that go beyond the classroom, and
incorporates a good mix of applied learning and
peer learning. The 16 core courses expose you to
the fundamentals of business and the electives help
you build on your areas of interest and aptitude. The
school constantly strives to ensure that the curriculum is
contemporary and relevant to current industry needs. It
is reviewed and upgraded every year for its theoretical
intensity and practical relevance.
Learning goals of the PGP
The PGP has fi ve key learning objectives around
which the curriculum has been designed. These goals
have been devised to ensure that you are capable of
conducting business and managing organisations in a
global setting and are comfortable making ethically and
strategically sound decisions, even in environments of
uncertainty. The learning goals include:
• Critical and integrative thinking
• Interpersonal awareness and working in teams
• Ethical responsibility
• Awareness of global issues affecting business
• Effective oral communication

REAL-LIFE BUSINESS LEARNING
SPECIALISATIONS ANDEXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
SPECIALISATIONS
Multiple specialisations are offered across the two
campuses and you can choose up to two areas to
specialise in. The list of specialisations include:
PRACTICUM COURSES
Apart from the regular classroom learning, the curriculum
integrates a large amount of applied learning in the form
of practicum courses. Therefore you start applying what
you are learning, even as you learn. The Post Graduate
Programme is supported by the following learning
interventions:
Leadership Development Programme (LDP)
LDP helps you develop your own style of leadership.
It catalyses individual growth through a three-fold
approach of self-refl ection, peer evaluation and facilitator
intervention.
Experiential Learning Programme (ELP)
The ELP allows you to work on real-world business
issues through live projects offered by companies and
organisations. It enables you to apply your learning
outside the classroom setting and gain new perspectives
on business.
Planning an Entrepreneurial Venture (PaEV)
The PaEV offers you guidance on how to set up your
own enterprise. Through this elective, you’ll get an
exciting introduction to the process and practice of
entrepreneurship and new-venture creation.
Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (WGCP)
WGCP is a cross-functional, globally-oriented programme
that educates you about the problems of international
business and equips you with consulting skills. With
WGCP, students from Wharton and the ISB jointly help US
and Indian companies enter or enhance their positions in
the North American or Indian markets.
Independent Study (INDS)
The Independent Study course allows you to explore
areas of interest that may not be covered in the
curriculum. You have the option of working on an
independent study project with another peer under the
guidance of a faculty member.
Faculty Initiated Research Project (FIRP)
The faculty members involve students in their research,
which provides signifi cant mutual learning opportunities.
Such research projects are designed and supervised by
the faculty, and you are expected to complete the project
within the stipulated time.

“MY BIGGEST CONCERN WAS COMING BACK TO AN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT AFTER A BREAK OF ALMOST TEN YEARS. BUT WHEN I CAME TO ISB, I REALISED THAT THE EMPHASIS IS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO TAKE AWAY FROM HERE.”
SRIKIRAN RAGHAVAN, CLASS OF 2011,MANAGER, ONLINE SALES OPERATIONS (FOR SMES), FACEBOOK INDIA
After 10 years in the IT industry and an unsuccessful
attempt with his own start-up, Srikiran believed he needed a
management education that could give him some perspective,
which could help him get back to his now defunct start-up.
But there were some diffi cult questions that faced him. What
would a mid-career executive with 10-years’ experience gain
out of any B-School? This was a question Srikiran would ask
himself every time he evaluated any management programme.
He chose ISB because it was based in India, and it would
offer him an opportunity of taking up an exchange programme
with some of the best B-Schools in the world. However, the
PGP opened new possibilities for Srikiran. An experiential
learning programme introduced him to the social network. His
exchange programme at Wharton gave him the opportunity to
further develop his global perspective on business. And most
importantly, the one year at ISB allowed him to change his
track and take tough decisions. One of which was keeping his
personal project on hold while he consults small and medium
sized industries on their online presence as a Manager of
Online Sales Operations at Facebook. Clearly, his decision
of applying to ISB, despite his concerns as a mid-career
executive, changed his thinking and transformed his career.

“THE PGP IS ONE INTENSE YEAR. THE MORE YOU KEEP YOURSELF OPEN TO THE EXPERIENCES AND THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU, THE RICHER YOU WILL BE. IF YOU FREE YOUR MIND, IT WILL LEARN MORE FOR YOU.”
PRAMEET KAMAT, CLASS OF 2006,BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, DUPONT INDIA
Prameet once read an article in a business magazine about
ITC. What impressed him was the fact that the business model
sought to fi nd ways of increasing the spending power of the
rural consumer, instead of just selling to them. His agricultural
roots helped him appreciate the magnanimity of that idea.
And as he immersed in the study of this business model, he
realised the need to invest in a programme and develop his
own skills. He chose ISB because we wanted to be in India
and imbibe the faculty’s perspectives on rural markets. He
was amazed at how the faculty proved to be facilitators, who
brought out so much of learning that was already present
in the classroom, guiding discussions on case studies,
and using simulations and games. On the strength of ISB’s
network, he approached ITC’s e-Choupal and evaluated their
business strategies out of his own interest. His groundwork
included collecting insights from consumers and store owners,
and making recommendations. It helped him understand
the prerequisites of setting up a business like e-Choupal.
So when it came down to choosing his next course of action
immediately after ISB, Prameet had no diffi culty in choosing
Castrol, where he was given the responsibility of creating
a market in rural India for BP’s latest offering from scratch.
His ISB experience helped him adjust quickly to the needs
of undertaking a rural business project in his fi rst job, and
it continues to help him today, as he handles the business
development for DuPont India.

The ISB’s unique faculty model brings together a strong
team of resident faculty and international faculty from
leading B-Schools around the world. The resident faculty
at the school are actively involved in academic as well as
industry-related research. This gives you an insight into
emerging trends in business focused on new economies.
The school also plays host to faculty from renowned
schools such as Wharton, Kellogg, London Business
School, Cornell, Duke and UCLA, amongst others. It also

“AFTER WORKING IN EMERGING AND DEVELOPED MARKETS ACROSS THREE CONTINENTS, I NEEDED A PROGRAMME THAT COULD HELP ME RETURN TO INDIA AND LEVERAGE MY EXPERIENCE.”
SURYANARAYANA SHASTRI, CLASS OF 2003,MANAGER (PRODUCTS), MICROSOFT INDIA
In fi ve years, Surya managed to accomplish what many
engineering students aspire to do. Being an IT Engineer
for fi nancial services, Surya worked across geographies, in
countries ranging from Hungary to Tanzania, and then he
moved to New York City. In 2003, at a time when India was
just starting its economic ascent, he realised that the real
opportunity in the medium to long-term was in India. An Indian
B-School seemed like an ideal way to make a transition back
home and to build a strong network at the same time. With
signifi cant work experience already under his belt, Surya
was looking for a programme where his experience would be
valued, both in the classroom and at the time of placements.
His search led him to the PGP at ISB. After entering ISB
however, he understood that there’s more to business than
what he’d been exposed to. He took courses from different
disciplines - from Market Research to Mergers & Acquisitions,
and Macro Economics to Valuation of Intellectual Property
in IT - and understood how various functions come together
to create a successful business in different markets. Surya
also sought learning outside the classrooms, be it through
discussions with the faculty, assignments with the diverse peer
group, the industry interventions organised through the year,
or the student led initiatives on campus. As his perspective
changed and outlook matured, he realised that there is no
single right answer to most things, and that the essence of
management lies in managing uncertainty.
19
“AS A RADAR SCIENTIST AT DRDO, I BELIEVED THAT MOVING INTO THE PRIVATE SECTOR OF THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY WAS THE BEST CAREER PROGRESSION FOR ME. BUT AFTER ISB, MY OWN DEFINITION OF CAREER PROGRESSION CHANGED.”
SHOUVIK DHAR, CLASS OF 2009,CO-FOUNDER, EDVENTO
Shouvik strongly believed that ISB would be a great platform
that would help him enter the private sector in the Aerospace
industry. After ISB however, life had other plans for him.
Shouvik had some entrepreneurial blood running in his veins,
which he only discovered in the one year he spent at ISB.
Somewhere during his jamming sessions with fellow musicians
at the student village, interspersed between several hours of
academic grind and business plan presentations, Shouvik
and his band devised a new business plan for music labels.
After nearly convincing a music label to invest in their idea,
there was no looking back. Armed with relevant learning
and diverse perspectives, Shouvik turned from wanting to
be a part of a great organisation to creating value as an
entrepreneur, and quickly established multiple start-ups in the
education and F&B sectors. And just one year at ISB helped
ignite the serial entrepreneur in Shouvik.
20
The Centres of Excellence and Institutes at the ISB serve
as a bridge between the industry and academia. They are
involved in education, research and outreach activities to
promote knowledge creation and dissemination. Often,
students are involved in organising events like seminars,
conferences and industry leader visits in conjunction with
the Centres. This helps them get an insider’s perspective
into the area the Centre is dedicated to.
Apart from the Centres, the ISB has set up dedicated
Institutes at the Mohali campus. In addition to conducting
research and outreach activities, these Institutes also offer
a specialisation in the PGP. So you can opt to take up a
dual specialisation, such as Finance and Healthcare, or
Manufacturing and Strategy, as part of your curriculum.

YOUR NETWORK AROUND THE WORLD
Since 2002, the ISB has built a network of over 4,000
alumni, spread across 25 countries. The alumni take
active interest in the school and lend their time and
resources to participate in various school initiatives,
including admission interviews, mentoring students,
providing scholarship opportunities, and more.
The Alumni Association has seven chapters within the
country, in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune,
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Chennai and Mumbai, and four outside the country.
These chapters organise meets at regular intervals. With
a representation across a spectrum of sectors, such as
Consulting, Finance, Real Estate, Media, Manufacturing,
IT and ITES, Telecom, Automobile, Oil/ Energy, Petroleum,
NGOs, and Pharma among others, the Alumni Association
proves to be a repository of industry knowledge and
contacts, which you can benefi t from all through your
career.
23
The learning that you gain from peer interactions is as
important as what you gain in the classroom. Having a
diverse peer group on campus exposes you to different
cultures, ideas, and perspectives. The ISB’s admissions
process is designed to build a student body composed
of professionals from different backgrounds in terms
of educational qualifi cation, work experience, industry
exposure, functional expertise, and other such traits.

HELPING YOU IDENTIFY THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY
The ISB has a well-organised Career Advancement
Services (CAS) cell which enables you to meet
your career aspirations. The cell has a Learning &
Development (L&D) division, which works with you to
identify your career interests, abilities and skill gaps. It
also suggests learning interventions that will help you
achieve your career goals. The CAS also maintains strong
relationships with the corporate world and works with
various organisations to identify their recruitment needs.
This is then mapped to students’ career aspirations, and
if a mutually benefi cial placement opportunity is available,
it facilitates an interaction between the organisations and
the students. In this way, CAS helps you make the right
career moves immediately after graduation.
For the graduating class of 2012, nearly 350 companies
made a total of 631 offers to the 559 students who
PLACEMENTS
participated in the placement process. 71% of the
students opted for an industry different from the one they
came from, while 75% opted for a different function than
the one they were involved with before the ISB.
The placement process
The ISB follows a unifi ed placement process for both
its campuses. Placements commence with a series of
pre-placement talks by recruiters to the student body at
either campus. The talks pertain to the organisation, their
philosophy and their expectations. Students respond by
submitting an Expressions of Interest (EOI), which will
be collected from both campuses for each participating
organisation. This ensures that all recruiters and students
have equal access to the best talent and opportunities,
irrespective of the location.

GUIDING YOU TO MAKE THE RIGHT MOVES
Career Shifts
A career shift is characterised by movement across the
function, domain or industry you belonged to prior to the
ISB. Career shifts require picking up skills and knowledge
required to succeed in the new role. Based on your inputs
about your career goals in terms of function, role, and
industry, the L&D team suggests a course of action, which
could involve a set of electives, or even a project which
could enhance your prospects of securing a placement of
your liking.
Career Progression
Unlike the career shift, a career progression would require
you to take up greater responsibilities within your domain
or industry, and work towards developing some cross-
functional skills. The L&D team would help you analyse
your career objectives based on your profi le and present
the opportunities that are best suited to help you get a
leap in your chosen career.
Entrepreneurship & Family Business
The Wadhwani Centre for Entrepreneurship Development
(WCED) and PGP offer comprehensive guidance to
potential entrepreneurs among the students. The WCED
mentors students from the initial phase of evaluating
ideas, developing business plans, and supporting the
implementation. It also facilitates interactions with venture
capitalists, technology providers, enterprise-promoting
agencies, commercial banks, etc., and helps students lay
the foundation for their enterprise. The WCED also runs
an incubation programme called the Entrepreneurship
Development Initiative (EDI), which provides mentoring
and fi nancial support to students’ entrepreneurial efforts.
In effect, what you have is an ecosystem to groom the
entrepreneur in you.
28
LIFE ON CAMPUS
29
STUDY-LIFE BALANCE
The School lays great emphasis on the quality of life on
campus. The Student Villages at both the Hyderabad and
Mohali campuses provide world-class accommodation

“AFTER SIX YEARS IN THE BRANDING SPACE, I WAS LOOKING AT MARKETING ONLY FROM A BRAND PERSPECTIVE. BUT TO BECOME A BRAND MANAGER, I NEEDED A MORE HOLISTIC OUTLOOK. THIS BROUGHT ME TO ISB.”
MAMTA SAINI, CLASS OF 2010,BRAND MANAGER, L‘OREAL INDIA
Nearly two years after graduating from NIFT, Mamta got a
break in Levi’s with its marketing department. And that was
the turning point in her career, which helped her understand
her true strengths and interests in marketing. She also felt the
need for a programme that would help her look at marketing
with a leader’s perspective. With this single minded focus,
Mamta applied to the ISB. Early into the PGP, she identifi ed
the skills she needed to become a brand manager. She made
a special effort to develop her cross-functional skills, owing to
her belief that only a unifi ed approach across functions would
enable the success of any brand. She attended almost every
talk given by industry speakers on campus and workshops
that were organised by the student clubs at ISB, especially
those related to marketing and retail. When she learnt that
L’Oreal was not visiting ISB during their placement season, her
conviction of wanting to become a Brand Manager at L’Oreal
infl uenced her decision of heading straight to L’Oreal’s offi ce
in Mumbai and seeking employment. Because, as Mamta puts
it, “When you know you are the right fi t for a job, nobody can
deny you that opportunity”.

“IF THERE’S ONE PLACE THAT WILL HELP YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM A BATTLEFIELD TO A BOARDROOM, QUITE LITERALLY, IT WOULD BE THE ISB.”
ROHIT KAPOOR, CLASS OF 2009,SENIOR ASSOCIATE, MCKINSEY & CO.
Rohit Kapoor fulfi lled his childhood dream when he was
enlisted in the Indian Army. Subsequent to his training, he was
commissioned into the elite Engineer Regiment, where he rose
up to the rank of a Major. However, his career as an offi cer
was cut short when he was forced to retire due to a severe
injury. He decided to enter the corporate world, but he needed
to identify areas where his background would give him an
advantage. Leadership roles seemed like the natural fi t, but he
needed to make the transition from military to civil leadership,
and that is how he came to apply to the ISB. However, a
whole new world of opportunities opened in front of him when
he gained admission into the PGP. Rohit quickly picked up
the skills he needed to assist him with his corporate lunge,
and found help in both, the intense atmosphere of classroom
learning and also leading student initiatives at ISB after he was
elected the General Student Body President. His role as the
GSB President taught him how to lead a large group of talent
through what was to become one of the most challenging
economic years. Today, as a senior associate with McKinsey
& Co., Rohit attributes his successful career shift to the leap of
faith that brought him to ISB.
