Isaac was born in Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire. His father died before he was born and when he was four years old his mother re-married. Her
new husband didn’t want Isaac to live with them so his mother left him with his grandmother.

When her husband died, Isaac’s mother returned to Woolsthorpe along with Isaac’s new brothers and sisters. Isaac was 11 years old by this time.
When he was 12, Isaac went to the King’s School in
Grantham. He didn’t start off very well and didn’t pay much attention but he soon started to enjoy the school and went
on to do very well.
This pictures shows where Isaac Newton wrote his name on the windowsill at Grantham School!

When he was 16, Isaac’s mother took him out of school so that he could take over the running of the family farm. However, Isaac didn’t want to be a farmer but instead wanted to go to university to carry on his education. Eventually,
Isaac’s mother agreed that he could go to university.
When he was 18, he went to Trinity College at Cambridge University. Even though his mother could have paid the
fees herself, she decided that Isaac would have work to pay his own way at
university. Once there, Isaac quickly became very interested in science.
