4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic Recognition Awards

T-Shirt Award: Each year youth participants are invited to enter a drawing to be voted on by the clinic committee at their April meeting ( this year: April 21st 2015). The winning design appears on that year's clinic t-shirt. The second place design becomes the clinic brochure cover and the third place design the back cover. Stall Decoration Awards: Participants can decide if they want to do an individual stall decoration, a group/club decoration of stalls or a combination of both. Decorating one's stall is optional. Stalls must be ready by Sunday morning when voting begins. Clinic Committee's Award: Individual awards voted on by the clinic committee Kids' Choice Award: Individual awards voted on by clinic participants Educational Decoration Award: Group award for the club/group that uses decorations that teach and/or educate. Voted on by the clinic committee. Artistic Stalls Awards: Group award for the club/group who has the most colorful, unique decorations. Voted on by the clinic committee. Jamie Reurink Memorial Smiley Award: Awarded to the youth who is smiling, helpful, kind, friendly and a good sport all week, just like Jamie. 4-H Spirit Awards: All week long we are looking for people who “go above and beyond” to be helpful and kind, friendly and courteous. You may nominate anyone but yourself by signing a paper that gives a description of why… Example – “I nominate Suzy because she helped me carry my water bucket this morning.'” Each nominee will be entered in a daily drawing to win prizes and then all these slips will be posted on the announcers booth for the week.

4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic Registration Information

Clinic is limited to 100 youth participants SEI/ASTM approved helmets are required for all classes. The following youth participants will need to be evaluated PRIOR to clinic: First-time clinic participants, those wanting to move up a level, those that have had a change of horse and first-time Driving B participants. Evaluation information is available on the next page. Registration opens on April 1st , 2015 and closes on May 31st , 2015. Registrations accepted after the deadline will be charged a $10 late fee. Class sizes are limited and will fill on a first come first serve basis.

**Full-arena classes (eg. Ring A/B): 12 rider max. Half-arena classes: 8 rider max.** **Class availability will be posted on the Allegan County 5 Day Clinic Facebook page**

Class fee for Sessions 1-6: $50.00 per class (maximum of 3 classes) Class fee for Evening Session: $40 per class (DrivingA or B, Vaulting or Adult Class B) Cloverbud A (5-6 yrs., leadline, 30 min.): $20.00 Cloverbud B (7-8 yrs., walk/trot, 60 min.): $40.00 Payment must be made IN FULL at time of registration including camping – NO DEPOSITS!! Non-Cloverbud participants must be 9 years old by January 1st or older and should be able to, at a minimum, control their horse/pony at a walk and trot. Registrations for Allegan County 4-H Youth will be processed first.Out-of-County registrations will be put on a waiting list. If space is available, youth from other counties will be accepted. Stall Information Horses/ponies may be stalled at the clinic grounds or trailered in daily. Feeding check list must be completed and posted on stall door. Please include horse’s name, owner’s name and phone number, vet’s name and phone number, and an emergency contact. Tack stalls will be shared.

Immunizations Information For the protection of your horse/pony, all animals must receive Flu, Tetanus, WEE and EEE shots. Also a current negative Coggins test is REQUIRED and the original copy must be available in case of inspection. West Nile Virus, VEE, Strangles, Rhino and PHF vaccines are strongly recommended, but not required. All immunizations should be given 3-4 weeks before the clinic in order to be effective.

Proof of Immunizations & Coggins must be presented at the time of check-in.

Allegan County Fairgrounds Overnight Camping Information Overnight camping at the Allegan County Fairgrounds during the 4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic is available for participant families and club leaders on a first come first serve basis.. Camping fee is $80.00 for the week per campsite and must be paid at time of registration. Any special camping arrangements (eg. pulling in early) MUST be cleared through the clinic coordinator. Extra charge may apply. Camp registration form attached. Camping card must be obtained at check-in and be placed in a visible area at campsite.

If you plan to attend any of the evaluation dates listed above, please RSVP to the clinic coordinator. If you need other arrangements for evaluation there is a list of qualified Horsemaster, Jumping and Driving evaluators posted on the 4-H website: www.msue.msu.edu/allegan. Compensation for an evaluators' time and travel expenses (ie. gas money) is appreciated. Please contact the clinic coordinator, Paul Balgoyen: ph.# 269-650-1323, [email protected] with any questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prior to the 4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic, a participant and his/her horse or pony may need to be evaluated. This will help place rider and horse into appropriate classes with riders of similar ability. At each level, a 4-H Horsemaster Mounted Skills Evaluation form is used. Only the Mounted Skills section will be used for the clinic evaluations. Completion of the other sections of the 4-H Horsemaster Program is highly encouraged but not necessary for clinic. Please refer to the different levels’ Mounted Skills Evaluation forms below to determine what level a rider will attempt at the evaluation dates. A participant may sign up under their existing Horsemaster level without an evaluation. Cloverbuds and Adults do not need to complete an official evaluation but are requested to demonstrate prior to clinic that the horse/rider pairing is a safe one. Level 1: These classes are designed for young riders or those with little riding experience. Riders must be able to walk, steer and stop their horse or pony before joining a class. Level 2/3: These classes are designed for riders with intermediate riding skills. Riders must know basic aids, hand and body position and be able to walk, jog/trot, lope/canter their horse or pony with some consistency. Level 4/5: These classes are designed for riders with advanced riding skills. Riders must have good hand and body position, be able to use riding aids effectively and to be able to walk, jog/trot on the correct diagonal, lope/canter their horse or pony on the correct lead consistently.

Please remember to RSVP to clinic coordinator! All evaluations should be completed by May 31, 2015!

4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic Class Descriptions Cloverbud A: This is a half an hour class for 5 and 6 year old participants. Riders will work on correct riding position and controlling their horse/pony at the walk and trot while having fun! Horses must remain on a leadline at all times in this class. Cloverbud B: This is a one hour class for 7 and 8 year old participants. Riders will work on correct riding position and controlling their horse/pony at the walk and trot while having fun! All Cloverbuds must have available a side walker of at least 14 years of age. Western/English 1: Participants may ride Western or English while learning the following skills: leading, tying, mounting and dismounting, hand and body position, balancing and steering, walking and trotting with control and backing. Participants may lope/canter if the instructor feels they are ready. Patterns/Games 1: This class is geared towards English or Western basic riders. Participants will learn all the Level 1 techniques listed above, as well as, encounter simple obstacles, simple riding patterns and fun activities to improve control, safety and horsemanship. Balance and steering, as well as hand and body position, will be emphasized. Participants may lope/canter if the instructor feels they are ready. Gymkhana 1: This class will introduce riders to the basic techniques and patterns of the speed events known as Gymkhana (barrel racing, pole bending, etc.). All the Level 1 skills listed above will be practiced using the Gymkhana events. Participants may lope/canter if the instructor feels they are ready. Hunt Seat 2: The goal of this English riding class is to improve hand and body position and begin to develop an independent seat and hands. Participants will improve their walk, trot (posting and sitting) and canter and control and smooth transitions between all gaits. Participants begin learning bending and flexing, circle work and understand diagonals, leads and two-point position. Equitation patterns will be introduced. Western 3: Participants in this class will further improve abilities listed above by doing more work off the rail. Participants will practice various western riding patterns to establish better control, rhythm and balance with their horse. Horsemanship patterns used will be determined by the instructor and students but may include circles, figure eights, serpentines, etc. Hunt Seat 3: Participants in this class will further improve abilities listed above by doing more work off the rail. Participants will practice various English riding patterns to establish better control, rhythm and balance with their horse. Equitation patterns used will be determined by the instructor and students but may include circles, figure eights, serpentines, etc. Gymkhana A: This class will introduce more Gymkhana patterns. Participants will improve on hand and body positions, their horse’s position and develop safety and control at moderate speed. Proper technique of patterns will be emphasized before increasing speed. It is strongly recommended that horses be at least 6 years of age for this class. Participants are generally level 2/3 riders. Trail 2/3: Trail is a class that requires riders to perform specific maneuvers to negotiate various obstacles on a course with as much ease as possible. Participants will be introduced to trail maneuvers, such as backing, side passing, turns on the haunches and forehand and ground tying. Participants will also be introduced to trail obstacles, such as ground poles, bridges, gates and more. Dressage 2/3: Participants in this class will utilize their English riding skills to introduce their horses to preliminary Dressage work and exercises. Participants will study the basic principles of Dressage and practice the figures of lower level tests. Of course, the goal is to establish better control, rhythm and balance with their horse/pony.

Introductory Jumping 2/3: Participants in this class will utilize their English riding skills to introduce their mounts to the techniques and exercises needed to begin jumping them. It is strongly recommended that horses/ponies be at least 6 years old for this class. Participants will jump obstacles only when the instructor deems the horse and rider safe and ready to do so. Show Prep. 3/4/5: This class is intended develop or improve a rider and horse's preparedness for the show ring. The class will cover Showmanship, Halter, English and Western horsemanship and other show related topics. Appropriate 3/4/5 Level goals listed elsewhere in these descriptions will also be covered. Western Performance 4/5: This class strives to perfect a horse and rider's control, athleticism and balance. Participants will practice various riding exercises and patterns (determined by the instructor and students) including horsemanship, gymkhana, reining, drill team or other patterns. Participants will perfect hand and body position and develop a fully independent seat and hands. Participants will perfect their walk, trot and lope with control and smooth transitions between all gaits. Dressage 4/5: This class will focus on improving the Dressage abilities of horse and rider. Participants will perfect hand and body position and develop a fully independent seat and hands. Participants will perfect their walk, trot and canter with control and smooth transitions between all gaits. As well, participants will improve flexibility, impulsion and collection using Dressage figures and tests to do so. Jumping 4/5: This class will focus on improving the jumping abilities of horse and rider. Participants will perfect hand and body position and develop a fully independent seat and hands. Participants will perfect their walk, trot and canter with control and smooth transitions between all gaits. As well, participants will work on striding, pace and control through jumping exercises and courses. It is strongly recommended that horses/ponies be at least 6 years old for this class. Gymkhana Level B: Participants will perfect hand and body position and develop a fully independent seat and hands. Participants will improve Gymkhana pattern technique, their horse’s position and control and will increase speed as the instructor see fit. It is strongly recommended that horses be at least 6 years of age for this class. Participants are generally level 4/5 riders. Trail Level 4/5: Participants will perfect trail maneuvers, such as backing, side passing, turns on the haunches and forehand and ground tying. Participants will also be introduced to more advanced trail obstacles, such as loping over ground poles, tarps, water hazards, small jumps and more. Adult Class A: This is a great opportunity for leaders and parents to improve their horsemanship skills and horse knowledge. This adult class is geared toward more beginner adult riders. The focus of this class will be determined by the instructor and participants. Interested adults need to complete a registration form just like any other participant. Adult Class B: This adult class is geared toward more advanced adult riders. The focus of this class will be determined by the instructor and participants. Interested adults need to complete a registration form just like any other participant.

**Adult classes may be canceled if arena space is needed to accommodate additional youth classes. Refunds will be given if cancellation is necessary**

Vaulting: This class is open to participants of all levels. No horse is required. One may register for Vaulting in addition to one's regular session classes. Vaulting is best described as gymnastics on and off of a horse in motion. Participants will practice vaulting and maneuvers on a stationary barrel apparatus and take turns doing the same maneuvers onto and off of a horse being lounged. Driving A: This class is open to participants of all levels. No horse is required. One may register for Driving in addition to one's regular session classes. Participants will be introduced to the basics of driving: safety, harnessing, heading, ground driving and preliminary driving techniques. Participants will always drive with a mentor or the instructor. This class will meet near the round pens. Driving B: Participants in this class must provide their own safe driving animal and cart. This class will focus on improving driving safety and techniques. Participants may encounter patterns, obstacles and other more advanced driving challenges. It is strongly recommended that horses be at least 6 years of age for this class. All Driving B participants must have available a header of at least fourteen years of age.

4-H FIVE-DAY HORSE CLINIC RULES 1. All youth will participate in their scheduled activities. Please be on time and prepared to participate.

2. Be prepared for sun, heat or rain. 3. All participants must obey safety procedures and rules given by the instructors and as outlined in these rules. 4. Do not enter assigned areas until told to do so by instructor. 5. Our clinic is limited to a given area on the fairgrounds. Participants must not wander into other areas. 6. Those youth participants staying with a leader should have a signed parent emergency release form.

Rules and Regulations 1. Horse and ponies are to be under control at all times. 2. Horses and ponies will not be ridden outside of class unless participating in a supervised activity. 3. Horses and ponies will be ridden in full tack at all times unless directed by an instructor. 4. All equipment used must be well-fitting and of safe quality. 5. Grooming equipment and tack will be stored in trailers or empty stalls if available. 6. Long pants and boots are to be worn while riding. 7. For safety reasons instant obedience is a must. “Freeze” is a command to be given when a hazardous or potentially

hazardous situation develops. It means stop all activity immediately and look around to see what’s wrong. 8. Safety and courtesy are to be practiced at all times. 9. SEI/ASIEM approved Helmets will be worn by all students when mounted or driving 10. The Clinic Coordinator, Instructors, Barn Managers, Health Officer, Five-Day Clinic Committee Members and

Volunteer Leaders must be obeyed at all times. 11. Health & Release forms need to be completed and the release policy followed. 12. No dogs or bikes. 13. Posted Barn Rules are to be observed at all times.

Barn Rules

1. Stall doors are to be kept closed when not in use. 2. Wheelbarrows and all tools are to be kept in trailers or tack stalls if available 3. Feeding check list must be completed and posted on stall door showing horse’s name, owner’s name and phone number, vet’s name and phone number, and an emergency contact. 4. Closed shoes or boots worn at all times around horses. 5. No loud noises and “horse play” or water fights around horses. 6. Manure is to be placed in designated areas only.

Behavioral Expectation of 4-H Leaders/Members

Living in a new environment away from home (i.e. trips, camps, exchanges) can be exciting new learning experiences because there are so many opportunities for building new friendships and participating in new adventures which will enrich 4-H member’s lives. 4-H Horse leaders and members when participating or acting on behalf of the Allegan County 4-H Youth Program are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with accepted standards of social behavior, to respect the rights of others, and to refrain from any conduct which may be injurious to the program. Actions constituting misconduct for which 4-H leaders and members may be subject to disciplinary penalties include, but are not limited to:

1. Dishonesty in connection with any 4-H activity by cheating or knowingly furnishing false information. 2. Alteration or the unauthorized use of 4-H records. 3. Obstruction or disruption of any 4-H activity or aiding and encouraging other person to engage in such conduct. 4. Failure to comply with specific rules of a given project, contest or activity. 5. Failure to comply with directions of 4-H officials acting in the proper performance of their duties.

Inappropriate and unacceptable social behaviors include, but are not limited to:

1. Possession or use of fire crackers, gun powder, firearms, chemicals or materials that can be used to create an explosive mixture

2. Misuse of fire equipment or fire alarms. 3. Having a guest of the opposite sex in your sleeping quarters. 4. Physical abuse or conduct which threatens or endangers the health, safety and/or well-being of any person/animal. 5. Theft or malicious damage to property

6. Possession, use or distribution of alcohol or illegal drugs. 7. Lewd, indecent or obscene conduct and/or language. 8. Unauthorized entry, use or occupancy of any facility. 9. Any conduct which threatens or interferes with the maintenance of appropriate order and discipline, or invades the

rights of others. When violations occur at county, state, national and/or international 4-H events, the following procedures will be followed.

1. The parent(s)/guardian(s) will be contacted to arrange transportation home for the violator(s). 2. The local 4-H Extension Educator and/or County Extension Director will be notified. The 4-H Youth Council

President will also be notified. 3. If it is determined by 4-H staff members, leaders or other individuals in charge that the offense warrants it, the

offender(s) will be turned over to the proper authorities. Penalties: If, in the opinion of the 4-H staff member(s), leaders or other persons in charge of the event/activity, evidence of alteration, excessive outside help, unethical preparation and/or misconduct are noted, the exhibit and/or member may be subject to any/or all the penalties.

1. Disqualification from the show/exhibition. 2. Forfeit of all premiums and awards. 3. Disbarment from participation in that project/event/activity and/or other related projects/events/activities.

Further, enforcement may be selective, and does not waive the 4-H Extension Educator and/or 4-H Youth Council’s right to enforce penalties collectively at a future date and appropriate circumstances. Due Process: 4-H members have the right to appeal the levying of a 4-H rule(s) violation penalty(ies) according to the following process.

1. The member must request a hearing before the 4-H Youth Council at its next regular scheduled meeting. Request must be made in writing to the 4-H Youth Council President at last five (5) business days prior to the meeting.

2. All parties involved will be notified by certified mail with return receipt of the meeting date, time, and location. 3. All parties involved will have the right to present their case as to why he/she/they feel the penalty(ies) should be

reconsidered. 4. All parties involved will be notified in writing within five (5) business days by certified mail and return receipt of

the 4-H Youth Council’s decision regarding the appeal.

4-H FIVE-DAY HORSE CLINIC CAMPING AGREEMENT FORM (This form to be completed by parents/guardians and/or leaders)

I(WE) AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS IN ORDER TO CAMP AT THE ALLEGAN COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS DURING THE ALLEGAN COUNTY 4-H FIVE-DAY HORSE CLINC.

1. The fee for camping will be eighty dollars ($80.00) per week per campsite. The camping fee must be paid in full at the time of registration. Fee includes electric and water hookup.

2. Campers/trailers should be brought in no earlier than Friday, June 12th, 2015 and must be removed from the campgrounds at the end of clinic. Any special arrangements for campers or trailers (eg. pulling in early) must be cleared through the clinic coordinator. Extra fee may apply. Please no horse trailers in camping sites unless camping in said trailer.

3. Youth may camp at the fairgrounds only with their parent(s), legal guardian(s) or club leader. That adult assumes full responsibility as neither the Allegan County Fairgrounds or Allegan County MSU Extension/4-H office are providing supervision for any youth after the normal hours of this event. A signed permission form is required if a 4-H leader or other named adult is responsible for the attending youth.

4. The Allegan County 4-H program, Allegan County 4-H Horse Leaders Association, Allegan County 4-H Five-Day Horse Clinic and the Allegan County Fair will not be responsible for loss or damage of horses, tack, feed or vehicles.

5. No ground fires are allowed. However, grills may be used. 6. Due to past problems there will be no dogs or bikes allowed at clinic. 7. Stay away from barns from 10:00pm until 6:30am unless authorized by a Barn Manager or

there is an emergency. Quiet time begins at 11:00pm Please be considerate of other campers that need to sleep prior to 11:00pm.

Horses are not allowed in the camping area. 9. Anyone not following rules and/or caught in the act of theft, vandalism, possession of drugs or

alcohol, shall immediately be told to leave the fairgrounds or if the offense warrants it, the offender may be turned over to the proper authorities. No refund will be given.
