Not all children are born equal; everyone possesses different talents and skills. While some may be better at learning, others may display finer motor skills. A nursery is simply a place that will help your child prepare themselves for preschool and eventually qualify for kindergarten. Kindergarten will again prepare children with the essential skills of comprehending, learning and recalling which are mandatory for primary school. But is this enough? No! What I am talking about is not forcing a child to sit up and read from a book, or make them do everything with a twist. It’s just that providing preschoolers with challenges helps them develop a better approach when they attempt to tackle problems in general as they grow up.

You could for example ask your little one to pick up some ‘red’ apples when you are cooking in the kitchen or ask them describe the ‘flavor’ of the food they are eating. At times it even makes sense to get some math into your question like “How many crayons are there in your color set?” Asking questions is the best way to get your child to think. It often happens naturally while conversing with your child; as for the rest you will have to make an effort to ask more questions. This will automatically help them describe and comprehend situations or tasks that they have just completed.

Self-help skills are the best way to learn and are worth investing your effort into, because your children will grow up to be more independent. This again involves the simplest of things which may be easy for you as an adult but may seem complicated or a bit difficult (initially) for preschoolers.

Self-feeding, independent dressing, toilet skills, picking up their toys and cleaning up, teaches them to be both independent and responsible as they grow up. It is important to reward them when they accomplish a task by themselves and explain to them that they accomplished the task; which is why they have been rewarded. In this way they try to do it better and improve on it the next time. But whatever be the task, you will always need to supervise them when they are at it.
