Is your communication like this?
Options
Try print, email, and quick visits. Find what works and go with it. Not everyone likes email. Some people are more conversational.
Get a program going requesting participation. (Chess/checker tournament, literacy readings, professional development presentation)
Don’t whine—never present a problem without a solution.
When communication needs a boost
• Try an official appointment. If that is resisted, you know to go another route.
• You may need to try something dramatic--crazy digital photos in the library, dress up like a library character, do the morning announcements, etc…
If your principal doesn’t have time to spend with you,
Let your programs do the talking.
• Get students excited about the library! They will tell others. The teachers will hear about it and so on…
Is your communication like this?
Here are some tips to keep it going.
Keep your principal current on
• Collaboration
• Projects
• Goals
Find new ways to present information: slides, digital photos, fun newsletters…
Communication ABC’s
• Ask for feedback.
• Be an active listener.
• Communicate when the person is ready to listen. Timing is everything.
Go forward
• Show yourself strong in research, integrating technology, professional development, and collaboration.
• Make sure you are supporting the GLE’s and Standards in your lesson plans.
Is anyone here new?
New principal or librarian
If the principal is new
• Start communicating immediately.
• Send out a weekly newsletter.
• Volunteer for extra projects if necessary.
• Take the library with you.
If you are new
• Find out the principal’s vision and support it.
• Send out frequent communication demonstrating support for the vision.
• Communicate regularly with faculty and staff about library materials and activities.
• Keep your word. Be trustworthy.
And now, the fun stuff! Keep your principal posted…
