Reviews by Martha Gartner,Reference Librarian

1. 646.79 Friedman, Roslyn and Nussbaum, Annette. Coping WithYour Husband's Retirement. N.Y.: Simon & Schuster, Inc. iyb6.

According to the American Association of Retired Persons, most people plan more for their summer vacations than they do for the rest of their lives. Now more than ever, men are living longer and retiring earlier. As a result, more and more couples are faced with years of being together 24 hours a day. For some, this is the fulfillment of a dream. For others, it is a nightmare. The authors talked with retirees' wives and developed practical advice on planning for retirement as well as for dealing with its day-to-day problems.

2. B Rea Leighton, Frances Spatz. pie Search For the Real Nancy Reagan. N.Y. Macmillan, 198?T

This first major book about Nancy Reagan draws the most detailed portrait we have yet about our First Lady. According to Leighton, Nancy has wielded more power than any other First Lady in history.A picture emerges of a fiercely jealous wife and mother whose perfectionism alienated her children. Insecure because of her relationship with her adoptive father, she escaped into acting, but found true love in Ronald Reagan and took on the role of politician's wife. Her image during the early White House as a luxury-loving, self-centered woman has changed, partly through her involvement in an anti-drug program. Leighton devotes a chapter to the 'Iranscam' crisis, detailing Nancy's sometimes unwelcome influence and her uncompromising loyalty to her husband throughout.

3. MYS Fiction Borthwick, J.S. The Student Body. N.Y, St. Martin*s,1986.

Sarah Deane and her friend Alex McKenzie, M.D. are at Bowmouth College in Maine in this third of a series of mysteries by author Borthwick. The body of a brilliant but troublesome graduate student is found frozen in an ice sculpture on campus. In this story of intrigue in the English Literature Department there are literary references to great works from Beowulf to the present. The specialties of the eccentric faculty are clues to the villain's identity. This author gets better and better.

N E W REFERENCE: OF INTEREST TO BUSINESSPEOPLE:

KID'S NEWS

WHAT'S NEW!

"DRAGON DAYS AND READING KNIGHTS”Summer Reading Club

Each year the Children's Department of the Edison Public Library offers an at home summer reading club for children in pre-school through grade 5 (last grade completed). Arranged around a particular theme, this reading club allows a child to read at his own pace and own level. He or she can be rewarded for the reading they do without having to compete with other children.

Along with this club the library also offers numerous programs held at the library. All programs and reading clubs are held at the Main Library, Clara Barton Branch and the North Edison Branch.

**NOTE: Pre-schoolers who have parents willing to read to them arealso eligible to join our summer reading club. Reading to your child is a good way to spark interest in reading later in life. Try a family reading time at home.

"READING RAINBOW"A Public Television Children's Series, this show will consist

of all the book titles from last year's season 5 and will include 10 new program selections. Each program in the series contains one feature book read and illustrated for the children, along with 3 books reviewed by children. Children recommending books to children what better way to get a child to try a particular book. In order for this program to be a springboard to an enjoyable reading experience the books must be available to the children. To this end, the Edison Public Library has purchased the books that will be featured or reviewed in this series. Some of the featured titleswill include:

A Three Hat Day by Laura Geringer

Best Friends by Steven Kellogg

Alistair in Outer Space by Marilyn Sadler
