Solar radiation, widespread pollution, and other environmental

stressors produce adverse effects in the skin.

Oxidative stress is the term used to describe this damage,

which is caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable

molecules that attack cells, resulting in the destruction of

cellular membranes, proteins, enzymes, and the DNA itself.

Oxidative stress contributes to accelerated aging as

evidenced by wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, and other

diseases - including skin cancer. We produce about

75 percent of the oxidative stress that we incur within our own

bodies through natural oxygen metabolism. Since the skin is

a protective barrier, externally produced oxidative stress is

most effectively treated topically. Conversely, internally
