Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR
COMMON SALT AND CATTLE LICKS FORANIMAL CONSUMPTION
(First Revision)
o. FORE WORD
0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 12 October 1972, after the draft finalized by theAnimal Feeds Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agriculturaland Food Products Division .Council.
0.2 Apart from being used for industrial and edible purposes, common salthas various other uses like fish and hide curing, licks for cattle, etc. So fareight Indian Standards covering requirements for salts for various specificuses have been formulated, and recently it had been decided to amalgamatestandards for common salt having similar uses. With this in view, thisrevision incorporating provisions specified in IS: 920-1958 '·Specification forCommon Salt for Animal Consumption ' and IS: 1291-1958 ' Specificationfor Cattle Licks (Plain and Mineralized)' is being issued. Taking intoconsideration the developments in the industry, some of the methods of testprescribed for the original standard have been modified.
0.3 The provision of salt licks is not to do away completely with theincorporation of common salt and/or mineral mixture (containing traceelements) in the concentrate mixture of dairy animals. They are intendedto only supplement the need of common salt and other trace elements. Therefore, the limits for various trace elements prescribed in this revisionhave been stipulated in such a manner as to meet the requirements of theseelements partly.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value. observed or calculated. expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS : 2-1960.. The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
-Rules for rounding off numerical values ( "Vi3,d ).

APPENDIX A( Clause 5.2 )
SAMPLING OF fATTLE LICKS (PLAIN AND MINERALIZED)
A-I. GENERAL
A-I.O In drawing, preparing, storing and handling test samples, thefollowing precautions and directions shall be observed.
A-1.1 Samples shall be taken in a protected place not exposed to dampair, dust or soot.
A-l.2 The sampling instrument shall he clean and dry when used.
A-l.3 Precautions shall be taken to protect the samples, the material beingsampled, the sampling instrument and the containers for samples fromadventitious contamination.
A-l.4 The samples shall be placed in clean, dry, air-tight glass or othersuitable containers on which the material has no action.
1\-1.5 The sample containers when used shall be of such a size that theyare almost completely filled by the sample.
•Specification for edible common salt (s,tand "vision ).
7
IS .120.1972
A-I.6 Each sample container shall be sealed air-tight with a stopper afterfilling, and marked with full details of sampling, the date ofsampling. andthe month and year of manufacture of the material.
A-I.7 Samples shan be stored in such a manner that the temperature ofthe material does not vary unduly from the normal temperature.
A-2. SCALE OF SAMPLING
A-2.1 Lot - All the 25-kg blocks, 2-kg bricks or lOO-g pet licks of thesame type in a single consignment of the material drawn from a singlebatch of manufacture shall constitute a lot. If a consignment is declaredor known to consist of different types or batches of manufacture, thecontainers belonging to the same type and batch shall be·grouped togetherand each such group shall constitute a separate lot.
A-2.I.l Samples shall .be tested for each lot for ascertaining the conformity of the material to the requirements of the specification.
A-2.2 The number (n) of 25-kg blocks, 2·kg bricks or lOQ-g pet licks to bechosen from the lot shall depend on the size of the lot and shall be inaccordance with col I and 2 of Table 3.

A-3. FfEST SAMPLES AND REFEREE SAMPLE
A-3.1 Preparation 01 Teat Sample.
A-:J.I.l Remove the surface skin from the side faces of licks. Drill witha suitable drilling cutter a number of holes on each block or brick selected for sampling (see Table 3) down to about half of its thickness along adiagonal line on both sides of the block or the brick, the holes being evenlyarranged over the length. Collect equal amounts of drillings from eachof these holes, thoroughly mix to make a composite sample.
Break to small pieces each of the lOO-g pet licks, selected for sampling( see Table 3 ) . Collect equal amount of these small pieces and mix themto make a composite sample.
A-3.1.2 The total quantity of the composite sample shall not be lessthan 300 g. Divide this composite sample into three equal parts, one forthe purchaser, another for the vendor and the third to be used as refereesample.
A-3.2 Referee Sample - The referee sample shall consist of the compositesample (see A-3.1.2) marked for this purpose and shall bear the seals ofthe purchaser and the vendor. It shall be kept at a place agreed tobetween the purchaser and the vendor and shall be used in case of a disputebetween the two.
A-t. TESTS
A-f.l Tests for characteristics prescribed under 3 shall be conducted onthe composite sample.
A-5. CRITERION FOR CONFORMITY
A-S.t The lot shall be declared as conforming to this specification if thecomposite sample (see A-3.1.2) satisfy all the requirements as specifiedunder 3.
