FOREWORD

Thi. Indi•• St.nd.rd ( Second Revieion ) .....dopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after thodraft finalized by the Cement and Concrete Sectional Committee had been approved by tile CioilEnlineerin. Dilliaion Council.

Hydrophobic cement deteriorates very little durina prolonged storage under unfavourable conditions. This cement is obtllined by intergrinding 33 grade ordinary Portland cement clink.er with certain hydrophobic asents wbich Will impa.rt to the cement a water repelling property. The bydrophobic I1ropeniet.arc due tQ the formation of a water repellant film around each panicle o{ cement. This film il brokenduring the mixing of the concrete, and normal hydration takes place. Hydropbobre cement shall notbe confused with waterproofing cements. A test on hydrophobicity i. also included in Ibis standard.

Thi. standard was first issued as an emergency standard in 1976 and subsequently revised in 1978.Since ppbhcation of the first revision of this standard, amendments nave: been issued from time to timein order to modify various. requirements based 01\ the requirements of the users and also k.cepinl inview the raw materials and fuel available in the countf} for manufacture of cement. The importanta.mendments include modification in the tolerance requtremente for the mass of cement packed inbap, permitting packaginl of cement in 25 kg bags, making compulsory provision Cor Issuing a eeru..fieate indicating the total chloride content in percent by mass of cement, permitting differtnl bags fOtpacking of cement, incorporating de-bib for considering of suppJy of cement as bulk supply, etc. Inview of these large number of amendments, tbe Committee decided to bring out tbe second revision ofthis standard incorporating all these amendments so as 10 make it convenient {or the uscn.

MaR of cement packed in bags and the tolerance requirements fer the mBa'S Dfcement packed. in bag.shllll be in accordance witb the relevant provisions of the Standards of Wei_bts Bnd Measurel ( Packaged Comm.odities) Rules. 1977 an.d C-l.Z (ue Annex C for information). Any modification inthese rules in respect of tolerance on mass of cement would apply automatically to this standard.

The composition ofthe Technical Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard i'livenal AnDc~ D.

for tbe purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or aOIIYlil, shaH be rounded oft'tnaeeordanee with IS 2 : 1%0 "Rules for rounding oft' numerical values ( replsed)". The number orsignificant pl.... relained in lbe rounded off value sbould be the ..me.s th.1 of tbe specified value intbia standard.

I SCOPE

This standard covers the manufacture and chemicaland physical requirements of hydrophobic Portlandcement.

2 REFERENCESThe Indian Standards listed in Annex A are necessary adjuncts to this standard.

3 TERMINOLOGY3.1 For the purpose of thrs standard, the defi.nilions given III 1S 4845 : 196& and the followingshall apply.

3.1.1 Hydrophobic Cement

Cement obtained by gnndmg 33 grade ordinaryPortland cement clmker with an adduive which.WIll Impart to ground cement, a water repellingproperty which shall be destroyed only by wetattrition, such' as In concrete mixer. The hydrophobic quality of cement would facilitate Itsstorage for longer periods 10 extremely wetclimatic conditions.

4 MII.NUFACTURE4.1 Hydrophobic cement shall be manufacturedby intimately mrxrng together calcareous andargillaceous and/or otber silica, alumina or Iconoxrde bearing materials. burning them at clmkermg

mpetature and grinding the resultant clinker withtural or chermcal gypsum and small quannnes"I to O'5 percent by mass of clmker ) of a

11vrtrophobrc agent..HE - Some of the hydrophobic agents used In

the manufacture of hyrlrophohic cement are oleicacid, nnphthenic acut, steanc acid, pentachlorophenol, etc.

5 CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTSS.J The chemical requirements of hydrophobiccement shall be as laid in IS 269 : 1989.

6 PHYSICAL REQUIREMIlNTS6.1 Fineness

when tested for fineness In terms of specific surfaceby Blame's air permeabtluy method as describedin IS 4031 ( Part 2 ) : 1988, the specific surface ofthe hydrophobic cement shall be not less than350 ID'/kg.

6.1 The physical requirements. such as soundnessand setting time shall be as laid down in IS 269 :1989.

6 J Compressi,e StreDltb

The average compressive strength of at least threemortar cubes ( area of face 50 em") composed ofone part of cement) three parts of standard sand(conforming to IS 650 : 1966) by mass and P/4+ 3·0 percent ( of combined mass of cement andsand) water, and prepared, stored and tested inthe manner described in IS 4031 ( Part 6) : 1988shall be as follows:

a) 72 ± I hoursb) 168 ± 2 hoursc) 672 ± 4 hours

NOTE - P IS the percentage of water requrr ed 10produce a paste of standard consrsrency,

6.4 By agreement between the purchaser and themanufacturer, transverse strength test of plasticmortar In accordance with the method describedin IS 4031 (Part 8) : 1988 may be specified inaddition to the test specified in 6.3 The permissible value of the transverse strength for hydrophobic Portland cement shall be mutually agreedto between the purchaser and the supplier at thetime of placmg order.

6.5 Notwtthstandmg the strength requirementsspecified In 6.3 and 6.4. the cement shall show-aprogressive increase in strength from the strengthat 12 hours.

6.6 Hydrophobicity of the cement shall be testedand accepted in accordance WIth Annex B.

7 STORAGE,REJECTION

7.1 Storage, sampling, tests and rejection ofhydrophobic cement shall be as lard down inIS 26? : 1989.

8 MANUFACTURER'S CERTIFICATE

8.1 The manufacturer shall satisfy himself that thecemenlconforms to the requirements of tbis standard, and if requested, shall furnish a certificate tothil effect to the purchaser or his representativewithin ten days of despatch of the cement.
