ELECTRICAL PURPOSES PART 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
(Page 5, clause 6.1) — Replace existing clause by the following:
'6.1 Cora Diameter — The preferred internal diameters of the cores on which tapes are rolled shall be 25 mm to 50 mm or greater, and as agreed to between the purchaser and supplier.'
(Page 7, clause 6.3) — Replace existing clause by the following:
'6.3 The length of tape on a roll shall be a multiple of 5 m and as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier. The actual length shall not be less than the stated length.'
(Page 7, clause 7.1) — Replace existing clause by the following:
'7.1 After the roll of tape has been stored flat on the cut edges in the original sealed packing at a temperature between 10 and 40°C and a relative humidity of 45 to 75 percent for a period of twelve months from the date of manufacture, it shall be tested and shall comply with the requirements as prescribed in this standard.'

'9.1 Each label of an insulating tape or its wrapper, or a package containing unit or a number of unit rolls of tape or the central paper core on which the tape is wrapped shall have the following information clearly and indelibly marked on it:
a) Designation of the tape, in accordance with 3; b) Appearance of the tape according to 4, for example, transparent,
unooloured, opaque-blue etc; c) The nominal width of the tape; d) The nominal length of the tape on each roll; e) The nominal thickness of the tape; f) Manufacturer's or supplier's identification mark and batch number,

g) Country of manufacture; h) Month and year of manufacture; and j) The declared month and year of expiry, if applicable.'

FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES PART I GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
0 . F O R E W O R D
0.1 This Indian Standard (Part I) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 20 October 1975, after the draft finalized by the Insulating Materials Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.
0.2 It is intended to bring out a series of standards on pressure sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes. This series will cover the following in various parts:
a) General requirements, b) Methods of tests, and c) Specifications for individual materials.
0.2.1 This standard (Part I) covers the general requirements for pressure sensitive adhesive tapes.
0.3 Adhesive insulating tapes for electrical purposes, with cotton textile substrates and with PVC substrates are at present covered in IS:2448 (Part I)-1963* and IS:2448 (Part II)-1968† respectively. With the publication of relevant specifications for these tapes in the above series, these standards will be withdrawn.
0.4 Tapes with different forms of backing materials are covered in this standard. In selecting a tape most suitable for a particular purpose, the following general factors should be considered:
a) Operating temperature range, b) Electrical requirements, and c) Degree of fire resistance.

0.5 In preparing this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from IEC Publication 454-1 (1974) 'Specifications for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes: Part I General requirements', issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission.
0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained.in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard (Part I) specifies general requirements for pressure sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS:3434-1965† shall apply.
3. CLASSIFICATION AND DESIGNATION
3.1 The tape shall be classified by:
a) form and nature of backing (base) material (see Table 1),
b) temperature index of backing (base) material (see 3.2), c) minimum application temperature (see 3.3), and d) nature of adhesive (see 3.4).
3.1.1 Particular types of tape may be designated by using the code letters for the form and nature of backing material given in Table 1, followed by the figures for temperature index and minimum application temperature and the code letters for the adhesive as indicated in 3.4.

3.2 Temperature Index —The temperature index of the backing (base) material shall be quoted as the value in the following list that lies directly below the determined temperature index:
90, 105, 120, 130, 155, 180 or higher than 180.

NOTE 1 — The above figures correspond to the operating temperature of the material in °C.
NOTE 2 — For the purpose of this standard, the temperature index is related to the requirements given in the individual specifications The temperature index, while giving guidance of the thermal ageing behaviour of material, should not be identified with the maximum admissible surface temperature of this material in an insulation system.
3.3 Minimum Application Temperature — The minimum application temperature shall be — 10°C.
3.4 Adhesive — There are currently two basic types of adhesive in common use and a third which has some similarity to both; the thermoplastic type (Tp) softens on heating and reverts to its original state when cooled; this process may be repeated. The thermosetting type (T s ) becomes firmer on heating and remains so on cooling; it does not soften appreciably on subsequent reheating. The initial heating of the thermosetting adhesive improves the solvent resistance and increases the softening temperature. The third type of adhesive (Ss) generally has equal or better solvent resistance and softening temperature than thermosetting adhesives, without the need for heat treatment. Because of the wide range of temperatures over which they may be used, adhesives based on silicon are listed as a distinct type (S1).
NOTE — It is considered highly desirable to standardize a more specific classification in the light of recent developments in formulation. For the base material, this should be based on the thermal endurance test to be included in Part II of this standard.
4. APPEARANCE 4.1 Tapes may be transparent, translucent or opaque, and be supplied coloured or uncoloured.
Where coloured tapes are required, the preferred colours for all tapes other than those having a woven fabric base are black, blue, green, red, white and yellow.
5. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS
5.1 Each roll shall be reasonably free from telescoping and distortion. When unrolled, the tape shall show no transfer of adhesive to the backing of the underlying turn, tearing of the base film nor fraying of the threads.
NOTE — Care should be taken not to unwind tapes rapidly in conditions of temperature lower than 10°C.
6. DIMENSIONS 6.1 Core Diameter — The preferred internal diameters of the cores on which the tape is rolled are 25 mm and 75 mm.

6.2 Width — The width of the tape shall be 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 40, 50 mm or greater than 50 mm by agreement between the purchaser and the supplier.
6.2.1 Tolerance on Width — The tolerance on the stated width shall be ±1.0 mm for widths up to and including 20 mm and ±1.5 mm for greater widths.
NOTE — Closer tolerances than those stated in 6.2.1 may be specified in the individual specifications, if required.

6.3 Length — The length of tape on a roll shall be 10, 25, 50 m or multiples of 50 m. The actual length shall be not less than the stated length.
6.4 Thickness — Thicknesses shall be as specified in the individual specifications.
7. MINIMUM STORAGE LIFE
7.1 After the roll of tape has been stored flat on the cut edges in the original sealed packing at a temperature between 10 and 40°C and a relative humidity of 45 to 75 percent, the tape shall comply with the requirements of this standard for a period of six months from the date of despatch to the user.
8. PACKING
8.1 The individual rolls of tape shall be packed in such a manner that:
a) they are protected from moisture, dust and light;
b) they can easily be separated;
c) they are reasonably protected from damage during normal transit conditions; and
d) the flat sides of the rolls are horizontal when the package is in the position indicated in 9.1 (g).
9. MARKING
9.1 Each unit pack, and each package containing a number of unit packs, shall have the following information clearly and indelibly marked on it:
a) Designation of the tape, in accordance with 3;
b) Appearance of the tape according to 4, for example, transparent-uncoloured, opaque-blue, etc;
c) Width of the tape;
d) Length of the tape on each roll;
e) Nominal thickness of the tape;
f) Number of rolls in the unit pack or larger package;
g) 'This side up' or a similar indication, appropriately positioned, so that the rolls of tape will be lying flat on their cut edges, this designation is not needed on spindle-packed type;
h) Manufacturer's or supplier's identification mark clearly marked on the core of the roll, this mark shall include the batch number;

j) Customer's identification, if any;
k) Country of manufacture;
m) Date of despatch by the manufacturer; and
n) Date of expiry.
9.1.1 The product may also be marked with Standard mark.
9.1.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
