0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 9 November 1967, after the draft finalized by the

: Screw Threads and Fasteners Sectional Committee had been approved bythe Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

0.2 This standard was originally issued in 1962. This revision incorporatesthe decision taken by the ISO jTC 2 Bolts, Nuts and Accessories

0.3 This standard is based on:

Draft ISO Recommendation No. 940 Washers for hexagon bolts andnuts, metric series. International Organization for Standardiza-tion.

Doc: ISO jTC 2 (Secretariat-184) 302 First draft proposal forwashers for hexagon bolts and nuts - metric series - 42 up toand including 150 mm thread diameter. International Organi-zation for Standardization.

Doc: ISO/TC 2 (Secretariat-194) 326 First draft proposal forwashers for cheese head screws - metric series - I up to andincluding 20 mm thread diameter. International Organizationfor Standardization.

DIN 125-1943 Scheiben fiir Sechskantschr uben und Muttern(Washers for hexagon bolts and nuts). Deutscher Norrnen-ausschuss.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement, of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express-ing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*.The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value shouldbe the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised).

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements for plain washers of thefollowing types:

a) Machined washers, for precision and semi-precision grade ofgeneral purpose bolts and screws, in the diameter range 1'7 to155 mm;

b) Punched washers, type A, for black grade general purpose boltsand screws, in the diameter range 1'8 to 52 mm; and

c) Punched washers, tYIYeB, for slotted head screws in the diameterrange 1'8 to 22 mm.

2. MANUFACTURE

2.1 Material- Washers shall be made of steel, brass, aluminium or anyother suitable metal specified by the purchaser.

• 2.2 Worktnanship - The washers shall be free from cracks, burrs, pitsand other defects. The holes shall be reasonably concentric with the outerperiphery. All sharp edges shall be removed.

3. DESIGNATION

3.1 A washer shall be designated by name, type, size, number of thisstandard and material.

Examples:

a) A machined washer of size 10'5 mm made of brass shall bedesignated as:

Machined Washer 10'5 IS: 2016-Brass

b) A punched washer, Type B of size 14 mm made of brass shallbe designated as:

Punched Washer Bl4 IS: 2016-Brass

4. DIMENSIONS

4.1 The dimensions for machined washers, punched washers, types A andB, shall be as given in Tables 1, 2 and 3 respectively ( see P 6 to 11 ). Thesetables also give the size of bolt or screw for which the washers are suitable.

4.2 The other dimensional requirements for punched washers covered inTables 2 and 3 shall be as given in IS~5369-1969*.'

*General requirements for plain washers and lock washers.

5. 'FINISH

5.1 The plain washers shall be supplied in natural finish unless otherwis ,specified by the purchaser. At the request of the purchaser, washers m••ybe phosphate coated, nickel plated, tinned, galvanized, copper plat v , d,cadmium plated, etc. The properties of the plain washers shall i.ot,however, be impaired by the protective coating specified by thepurchaser.

6. PACKING6.1 The plain washers may be packed as recommended below:

Sizes up to 10'5 mm In boxes of 1000 piecesSizes from 13 to 19 mm In boxes of 500 piecesSizes 21 mm and above In boxes of 100 pieces.

The plain washers may also be packed in quantities of '} kgand 50 kg.

7.MARKING7.1 The packages contammg washers shall be marked with the size andmanufacturer's name or trade-mark.

7.1.1 The packages may also be marked with the ISI CertificationMark.

NOTE - The use of the ISI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of theIndian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and Regulationsmade thereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indian Standardconveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirementsof that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality controlwhich is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer. ISI markedproducts are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to that standard as afurther safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the ISICertification Mark may be granted to manufacturers 0" processors, may be obtainedfrom the Indian Standards Institution.
