Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committee, CED 3

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized bythe Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.

This standard has been prepared with a view to facilitate the manufacturing and use of stainlesssteel sinks for domestic purposes. Kitchen sinks of glazed fire clay type and vitreous enamelledsteel are covered in IS 771 ( Part 2 ) : 1985 'Specification for glazed fire clay sanitary appliances:Part 2 Specific requirements of kitchen and laboratory sinks ( third revision)' and IS 8718: 1978­'Specification for vitreous enamelled steel kitchen sinks' respectively.

Informations whether set-on or inset sink, the type ( 4), with or without tap hole(s) ( 7.5 ), withor witbou! overflow hole ( 7.6 ) and the surface finish required ( 8) shall be provided by thepurchaser while placing order.

In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been derived from BS 1244 ( Part 2 ): 1988"Metal sinks for domestic purposes: Part 2 Specification far set-on and inset sinks' issued by theBritish Standard s Institution.

The composition of the technical committees responsible for the formulation of this standard isgiven in Annex A

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded offin accordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised I'. The numberof significant places retained JD the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.

STAINLESS STEEL SINKS ~FOR DOMESTICPURPOSES - SPECIFICATION

?J SCOPE

.This standard covers requirements regardingmaterial, dimensions, construction and work­manship for sit-on and inset type stainless steelsinks for domestic purposes. Options are specifiedfor sinks with or without overflow holes, tapholes or selected waste facilities. The standarddoes not specify methods of supporting ormethods of fixing and sealing sinks.

2 REFERENCE

IS 5522: 1992 'Specification for stainless steelsheets and strips for utensils ( second revision )'is necessary adj unct to this standard.

3 DEFINITIONS

3.0 For the pupose of this standard the followingdefinitions shall apply.

3.1 Sit-on Sink

A sink which when installed fits on top of andlines up with a base unit of suitable dimensions,such that the aprons of the sink form acontinuation of the sides of the base unit.

3.2 Inset Sink

A sink which is constructed to fit into anaperture in a work top so that when installed, itonly projects above the working surface by anamount equal to the edge formed thickness.

4 TYPES

The sink shall be one of the following types ( seeFig. 1 ):

Type Alar A2 : Single bowl without drainer

Type Bl or H2 : Double bowl withoutdrainer

Type C : Single bowl single drainer,right or left hand

Type D : Single bowl double drainer

Type £1, E2 : Double bowl single drainer,or £3 rjibt or left hand

Type F : Double bowl double drainerNOTE - Hand of sink refers [0 position of drainerwhen VIewed from the front.

5 MATERIALS

Austenitic stainless steel of Grade DesignationX04Crl9Ni9 (Numerical symbol 304) or

X07Crl8Ni9 ( Numerical symbol 302 ) conform­ing to IS 5522 : 1992 shall be used .

6 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES

6.1 Thickness of Sheet/Strip

6.1.1 Nominal thickness of stainless steel sheet/strip used in the construction of sink shall be notless than 1'00 mm before forming.

6.1.2 Thickness at any point of sink, afterforming, shall not be less than 0'75 mm.

6.2 Depth of Bowls

The depth of the sink bowl shall be 150 mmminimum, when measured from the top edge ofthe bowl to the base of the sink.

NOTE - Depth of smaller bowl sh own in Fig. 1for Type E2 and E3 may be reduced up [0 100 mm.

6.3 Internal Dimensions of Bowls

The mimmum internal dimensions, whenmeasured on the bowl centre lines across the topof the bowl. shall be 380 mm x 340 mm forrectangular bowls and 360 mm for round bowls.

NOTES

I There is no restriction on bowl shape providedthe minimum dimensions given in irus clause arecomplied with.

2 Internal width of smaller bowl shown in FIg. 1for Type E2 and E3 may be reduced as per themanuf.vcturers design.

6.4 Bowl Locating Limits

6.4.1 The distance between the edge of the sinkbowl and the end of the sink shall be 15 mmminimum for sit-on type sinks and 30 mmminimum for inset type sinks. Depth of thecollar provided for j nsct sinks shall be 10 ± 2mm,

6.4.2 For sinks designed for use with a 600 mmwide work top, the distance between the edge ofthe sink bowl and the front of the sink shall be50 mm minimum and in the case of sinksdesigned for use with 500 mm wide worktop,the distance shall be 45 rnrn rn irnrnurn.

6.4.3 Both single and double bowl sink shall beset a minimum of 10 rnrn from gridline.

7.5 Tap Holes

Sinks shall be provided, in one of the followingconditions:

a) without tap holes;

b) with two tap holes of 30 ± 2 rnrn diameterwith a distance of 180 ± 2 mm betweencentres, or 300 ± 2 mm betweencentres for round bowled sinks only, fornominal size 1/2 outlet pillar or high levelcombination taps:

c) with single tap hole of 35 ± 2 mmdiameter for high outlet mixer tap.

7.1 Sinks shall be constructed of the lowestpractical numbers of sccnons compatible withthe manufacturing pract-cc to ensure a smoothsurface. The surfaces shall be free from anysharp edges. Sink bowl shall have roundedcorners to facilitate cleaning. Folded cornersmay be drawn or welded. All welded surfacesshall be adequately cleaned off inside andoutside the sink

7 CONSTRUCTION AND WORKMANSHIP

7.1.1 The edges of any holes in the sink shallnot show evidence of undulation, chips, cracksor any other defect which would impair Itsappearance or performance.

7.2 When examined by an unaided eye of anexperienced observer, from a distance of600 ± 100 mm from exposed surfaces, the sinkshall be free from visible defects.

7.2.1 The visual examination shall be carriedout with uniform illumination at the surface ofthe sink of 300 lux and with the sink positionedso that it is between the light source and theobserver.

9 MARKING

9.1 Each sink shall be clc ir ly and permanentlymarked with the following infci matron in sucha way that it can be easily seen after installation:

a) the manufacturers name or identificationmark,

b) type and size of sink, and

c) year of manufacture.

9.2 BlS Certification Marking

9.2.1 Sinks may also be marked wn h theStandard Mark.

7.3 Drainers shall be fluted or grooved andshall be inclined towards the sink bowl.

7.4 Waste Outlet

Sink bowls shall be designed/constructed with afall to the waste outlet. The waste outlet fittingshall be recessed type.

9.2.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governedby the provisions of Bureau of Indian StandardsAct, 11.)86 and the Rules and Regulations madethereunder. The details of conditions underwhich the licence for the use of Standard Markmay be granted to manufacturers or producersmay be obtained from the Bureau of IndianStandards.
