The settlement agreement is the result of a class action lawsuit that was started by a number of Indian residential school survivors against the Government of Canada and the churches that ran the Indian residential schools. The settlement agreement is an effort to address the damage caused by Indian residential schools. Under the settlement agreement, the government will compensate (pay) Indian residential school survivors for their experiences while they were at residential school. For more information on the settlement agreement, see the Indian Residential Schools Settlement website at www.residentialschoolsettlement.ca. Common Experience Payment The Common Experience Payment (sometimes called CEP) is or anyone who lived at one or more eligible schools. You’re still eligible or the Common Experience Payment even i you didn’t attend the school or the ull school year. The Common Experience Payment is $10,000 or the  frst school year you went to an Indian residential school, and $3,000 or each additional school year. I you receive a Common Experience Payment,  your social assistance (welare) benefts won’t be aected. However, i you owe child or spousal support payments, they may be taken out o your Common Experience Payment. To apply or the Common Experience Payment,  you need to fll out a Common Experience Payment (CEP) application orm. (See Service Canada’s website at www.servicecanada.gc.ca. Under  Aboriginal Peoples, click Common Experience Payment.) You don’t need a lawyer to apply. I you can’t fll out the orm yoursel, there’s a special  orm that someone else can fll out or you. For more inormation on the Common Experience Payment and how to apply, call 1-866-699-1742 (no charge) or visit Service Canada’s website. I  you have difculty with your hearing or speech, call 1-800-926-9105 (TTY, no charge). The deadline to apply for the Common Experience Payment is September 19, 2011. Who is covered by the settlement agreement? I you’re an Indian residential school survivor and you didn’t opt out o the class action by  August 19, 2007, you will be covered by the settlement agreement. However, the settlement agreement only applies to eligible schools (see the Indian Residential Schools Settlement website or a list). The settlement agreement doesn’t apply to day school students unless they were abused on school property. The settlement agreement doesn’t apply to students who were boarded out.  All students who lived at an eligible school can apply or compensation (payment) under the Common Experience Payment. I you were seriously physically or sexually abused at an eligible school, you can also make an Independent Assessment Process application (see over). This fact sheet is for Indian residential school survivors who want to know what their options

Common Experience Payment
